Chapter 1 Introduction
The new generation access points are manufactured in an environmentally friendly way
and meet the RoHS directive. They support the latest WLAN technology and are designed
for use particularly in the professional environment.

Fig. 3: funkwerk WIx040 and funkwerk WIx065
To meet the different requirements relating to the various tasks, the access points have
one, two or three radio modules and two or four antennas, depending on the model, in or-

der to optimise the range or illumination of the radio range even under difficult conditions.
The radio module offers operation modes Client, Access Point and Bridge.
If a number of different applications are used, it is important to prioritise certain traffic flows.
The devices in the funkwerk Wx002 and funkwerk WI series therefore support WMM
(wireless multimedia). This enables voice or video data to be prioritised in order to ensure
optimum transmission quality for time-critical applications.
The powerful access points offer you low-cost wireless connections within your local net-
work.
This chapter describes the excellent features your new access point offers. It provides you
with an overview of the ways in which your access point can be used. This chapter also
tells you about the structure and content of this user's guide.
Safety precautions
The safety precautions, which are supplied with your device, tell you what you need to take
into consideration when using your access point.
Installation
How to connect your device is shown in Installation on page 9. This chapter also tells you
what preliminary tasks are necessary for configuration.
Configuration
How to get your device running is explained in Configuration of on page 15. There we show
you how to start up your device within a few minutes from a Windows PC and how to install
other useful online assistants. At the end of this chapter, you will be able to surf the Internet
and send and receive e-mails.
Password
If you are already familiar with configuring funkwerk devices and want to get started right
away, all you really need to know is the ex works user name and password.
User name
Password
Caution
Remember to change the password immediately when you log in to the device for the
first time. All funkwerk devices are supplied with the same password, which means
they are not protected against unauthorised access until you change the password.
How to change the passwords is described in chapter Passwords on page 84.

The next chapters describe the technical data and further access and configuration options
for your device. The subsequent chapters consist of a complete reference of all configura-
tion options. This user's guide concludes with a glossary and then an index.
1.1 Possible Applications
Connecting WLAN clients and the Ethernet
WLAN clients log in to an access point to exchange data. The logged in WLAN clients can
also use the access point to access the networks connected to the Ethernet interface.
Security features
With the scheduling function of the devices, times can be defined in which users are gran-
ted individual rights, such as for Internet access. The VLAN function of the access points
allows the allocation of users to virtual subnets and offers an additional degree of security.
Wireless LAN
Your access point supports the latest WLAN technology and is designed for use particularly
in the professional environment. The devices in the robust WI series are specially optim-
ised for use in difficult conditions in the industrial and outdoor sphere.
The WI series is available in two variants:
• Indoor Version with IP40 safety class (funkwerk WI1040,funkwerk WI2040 and funk-
werk WI3040)
• Outdoor version with IP65 safety class (funkwerk WI1065,funkwerk WI2065 and funk-
werk WI3065)
In addition to the radio standards 802.11b and 802.11g, the devices support 802.11a and
its European version 802.11h, so that data can also be transmitted in the 5 GHz frequency
range with data throughput of up to 54 mbps. This is required particularly for outdoor ap-
plications to achieve bridge solutions if other applications are already running in the 2.4
GHz frequency range.
The products also support modern procedures such as Multi SSID and VLAN, with which
up to 16 virtual access points can be mapped for each radio module. These can be mutu-
ally protected and therefore ensure e.g. restricted guest access for customers. Different
safety levels and encryptions can be configured for each SSID.
To ensure security is not neglected, the devices support security standards 802.1x and
802.11i (WPA, WPA2). The secure configuration is carried out over HTTPS or SSH.
Used as a bridge, the devices support Automatic Bridge Mode and are able to protect
bridge connection via TKIP and AES encryption.

Configuration and maintenance
The access points are configured using the Funkwerk Configuration Interface . This con-
figuration interfaces offers all options in clear menus, which are needed for both basic and
advanced configuration of the access point. Important data for maintenance and error dia-
gnosis can also be clearly displayed and easily accessed.

Chapter 2 Quick Install Guide
This chapter explains how you set up and start up your device and how you create a basic
configuration in just a few minutes.
2.1 Introduction
You can use the ComPoint Manager (IP address assignment) and the Funkwerk Config-
uration Interface (other configuration steps) for the basic configuration of your device.
The way to obtain the basic configuration is explained below step-by-step. A detailed online
help system gives you extra support.
This user’s guide assumes you have the following basic knowledge:
• Basic knowledge of network structure
• Knowledge of basic network terminology, such as server, client and IP address
• Basic knowledge of using Microsoft Windows operating systems
The CD also supplied includes all the tools that you need for the configuration and man-
agement of your device.
You can find other useful applications on the Internet at www.funkwerk-ec.com.
2.2 System requirements
For configuration, your PC must meet the following system requirements:
• Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME or Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000 or Win-
dows XP.
(The instructions for testing/installing the TCP/IP protocol and setting up the PC apply to
Windows 2000 or Windows XP.)
• Installed network card (Ethernet)
• CD ROM drive
• Microsoft TCP/IP protocol installed (see Configuring a PC on page 17)
• High colour display (more than 256 colours) for correct representation of the graphics

2.3 Presettings
Preconfigured data
You have three ways of accessing your device in your network to perform configuration
tasks:
(a) Dynamic IP address
In ex works state, your device is set to DHCP client mode, which means that when it is
connected to the network, it is automatically assigned an IP address if a DHCP server
is run. You can then access your device for configuration purposes using the IP ad-
dress assigned by the DHCP server. For information on determining the dynamically
assigned IP address, please see your DHCP server documentation.
(b) Fallback IP address
If you do not run a DHCP server, you can connect your device directly to your configur-
ation PC and then reach it using the following, predefined fallback IP configuration:
•IP Address:
•Netmask:
Make sure that the PC from which the configuration is performed has a suitable IP
configuration (see Configuring a PC on page 17).
(c) Assigning a fixed IP address
You can use the ComPoint Manager to assign the required IP address to your device.
Use the following access data to configure your device as delivered:
•User Name:
•Password:
Note
All funkwerk devices are shipped with the same user name and password. As long as
the password remains unchanged, they are not protected against unauthorised use.
Make sure you change the passwords to prevent unauthorised access to your device
(see Access and Configuration on page 51).
Software update
2 Quick Install Guide Funkwerk Enterprise Communications GmbH

More recent versions may have since been released. To find out how to check the software
version of your device and update it if necessary, see the Software update chapter in the
manual.
2.4 Installation
This section contains photographs, drawings and other information on the individual com-
ponents of the product package.
Your gateway offers a number of connection options:

All you need for this are the cables and antennas supplied with the equipment.
The device can be fitted with various antenna systems. External, screw-on standard anten-
nas can be used (optional).
The access points can be used as a table-top device or can be fitted to the wall using
brackets on the housing.
The access points of the funkwerk WI series can be mounted on a mast (indoor and out-
door version) or top-hat rail (indoor version only). Optional theft protection is also available
for the indoor and outdoor versions.
Caution
The use of the wrong mains adapter may damage your device. Only use the mains ad-
aptor supplied (only for funkwerk W1002 and funkwerk W2002). If you require foreign
adapters/mains units, please contact our funkwerk service.
For the funkwerk WI series devices, a screw strip terminal is included as standard for
power supply.
Set up and connect in the following sequence:
