To get t e most out of your new navigation system, take t e time to go t roug t is owner’s
manual and learn t e operating procedures for your unit. T is manual is broken down into two parts
for your convenience.
Part One introduces you to t e GPSMAP 182/232 and provides a Getting Started tour so t at you
may become more familiar wit t e unit. T is section will provide you wit a basic working knowledge
necessary to use t e unit to its fullest potential.

T e GPS system is operated by t e United States government, w ic is solely responsible for
its accuracy and maintenance. T e system is subject to c anges w ic could affect t e accuracy and
performance of all GPS equipment. Alt oug t e GARMIN GPSMAP 182/232 is a precision electronic
NAVigation AID (NAVAID), any NAVAID can be misused or misinterpreted and, t erefore, become
unsafe.
T e electronic c art is an aid to navigation and is designed to facilitate t e use of aut orized
government c arts, not replace t em. Only offi cial government c arts and notices to mariners contain all
information needed for safe navigation – and, as always, t e user is responsible for t eir prudent use.
Use t e GPSMAP 182/232 at your own risk. To reduce t e risk of unsafe operation, carefully
review and understand all aspects of t is Owner’s Manual—and t oroug ly practice operation using t e
simulator mode prior to actual use. W en in actual use, carefully compare indications from t e GPSMAP
182/232 to all available navigation sources, including t e information from ot er NAVAIDs, visual
sig tings, c arts, etc. For safety, always resolve any discrepancies before continuing navigation.
T e GPSMAP 182/232 complies wit Part 15 of t e FCC interference limits for Class B digital
devices FOR HOME OR OFFICE USE. T ese limits are designed to provide reasonable protection
against armful interference in a residential installation, and are more stringent t an “outdoor” require-
ments. Operation of t is device is subject to t e following conditions: (1) T is device may not cause
armful interference, and (2) t is device must accept any interference received, including interference
t at may cause undesired operation. T is equipment generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency
energy and, if not installed and used in accordance wit t e instructions, may cause armful interference
to radio communications. However, t ere is no guarantee t at interference will not occur in a particular
installation. If t is equipment does cause armful interference to radio or television reception, try
relocating t e equipment or connecting t e equipment to a different circuit. Consult t e dealer or an

T e GPSMAP 182/232 does not contain any user-serviceable parts. Repairs s ould only be made by

MAP DATA INFORMATION: One of the goals of GARMIN
is to provide customers with the most complete and accurate
cartography that is available to us at a reasonable cost.
We use a combination of governmental and private data
sources, which we identify (as required) in product literature
and copyright messages displayed to the consumer. Virtually
all data sources contain inaccurate or incomplete data to
some degree. This is particularly true outside the United
States, where complete and accurate digital data is either
not available or prohibitively expensive.

The GARMIN GPSMAP 182/232 has no user-serviceable
parts. Should you ever encounter a problem with your unit,
please ta e it to an authorized GARMIN dealer for repairs.
The GPSMAP 182/232 is fastened shut with screws. Any
attempt to open the case to change or modify the unit in any
way will void your warranty and may result in permanent
damage to the equipment.

located on the bac of the unit) in case it is lost, stolen, or
needs service. Be sure to eep your original sales receipt in a
safe place or attach a photocopy inside the manual.

Keypad Usage
Always press and release a ey to perform its primary
function. Pressing and holding the ENTER/MARK will
activate the secondary function.

T e ZOOM IN/IN key adjusts t e map scale to display a smaller area wit more detail. (Zooms in)
ZOOM OUT (182) or OUT (232) Key
T e ZOOM OUT/OUT key adjusts t e map scale to display a larger area wit less detail. (Zooms out)
NAV Key
T e NAV key displays t e Go To and Follow navigation menu.
PAGE Key
T e PAGE key selects t e main pages in sequence and returns display from a submenu page.
QUIT Key
T e QUIT key returns t e display to t e previous page and, w en entering data, it restores t e previous value
(cancels data entry).
MENU Key
T e MENU key displays a menu of available options for t e current page. Press twice to display t e Main Menu.
ARROW KEYPAD
T e ARROW KEYPAD is used to select (Hig lig t) menu options and enter data. It also controls cursor movement
on t e Map Page.
FIND Key
T e FIND key actives t e fi nd function to searc for nearby items and user waypoints.
ENTER/MARK Key
T e ENTER/MARK key selects a ig lig ted menu option. W en entering data, it allows you to initiate entry,
and t en to accept t e selected value(s). It also marks t e current location as a waypoint w en pressed and eld
for more t an one second.
MOB Key
T e MOB (Man OverBoard) key actives t e Man OverBoard navigation feature w en pressed.
POWER/ BACKLIGHT /CONTRAST Key
T e POWER/ BACKLIGHT/ CONTRAST key turns on/off t e unit and display illumination.

Selecting Options
Ho To Select Options and Enter Data
Before moving a ead into t e features of t e GPSMAP 182/232, you will need to learn basic
operations. You can select and activate options and enter data to customize t e GPSMAP 182/232 to fi t
your requirements. You can use t e ENTER/MARK key and ARROW KEYPAD to select options, enter
names and numbers in data fi elds, and activate your selections.
To select and activate an optional feature:
1. With any page displayed, press the MENU key to pop-up the options menu. he options menu will
display a list of optional features which are specifi c for that particular page. o select any feature on
the list of options requires movement of the cursor, which is identifi ed as highlighting, selecting or
choosing an item in a list or a fi eld (box) on a page.
2. Use the ARROW KEYPAD to move the cursor (highlight) up and down a list or up, down, and
sideways on menus.
3. Once you have moved to the selection desired, press the ENTER/MARK key to either activate the
feature or the MENU key to pop-up a sub-menu or list of yet more feature options. Just repeat this
process to select an option from the list or press the QUIT key to return to the previous setting.
he QUIT key will move backwards through these steps or when pressed, back to the main page
you started on.
To select and activate a function button:
1. When moving about a page with function buttons, like the ‘New Map Waypoint’ page, you will
observe functions such as ‘Show Map’, ‘Delete’ and ’OK’. o activate the function, highlight the
desired button and press the ENTER/MARK key.

Entering Data
Naming a waypoint or placing any sort of data t at as not been predefi ned requires t e use of
bot t e ARROW KEYPAD and t e ENTER/MARK key.
To enter a name or number in a data fi eld:
1. Once you have accessed a page with programmable data fi elds (i.e. ‘ Waypoint Edit’) you can use
the ARROW KEYPAD to move the cursor (Highlight) to fi elds on the page. Use the UP/DOWN
arrows to move up or down and the LEF /RIGH arrows to move sideways.
2. Pressing the ENTER/MARK key with the fi eld highlighted begins the process for entering data in
the form of alphanumeric characters.
3. Use the ARROW KEYPAD UP/DOWN arrows to cycle through numbers 0 to 9, plus/minus symbols,
blank space, and the alphabet. Pressing and releasing the keypad moves you character by character
through the list. Pressing and holding the keypad moves you rapidly through the list.
4. Use the ARROW KEYPAD LEF /RIGH arrows to move to the next character on the line or
backwards to edit characters. If there are more than two lines of data, keep pressing to the RIGH
to drop down to the next line.
5. When data entry is completed press ENTER/MARK to accept data, then move to the next
programmable fi eld. Not all data fi elds are programmable, like the date and time. When moving
about a page with these type of fi elds, the cursor will skip over them.

can be programmed or activated.

• The coordinates can be changed.

of navigation options and data entry. T e Getting Started Tour will introduce you to t e keypad and
provide a ‘ ands-on’ lesson in using t e GPSMAP 182/232. We strongly encourage you to take t e
Getting Started tour before using your unit for actual navigation.
T e GPSMAP 182/232 Quick Reference Guide contains elpful tips on using t e unit and perform-

Initializing the Receiver
T e fi rst time you power up your new GPSMAP 182/232, t e receiver must be given an opportu-
nity to collect satellite data and establis its present position. To ensure proper initialization, t e
GPSMAP 182/232 is s ipped from t e factory in AutoLocate mode, w ic will allow t e receiver to
“fi nd itself” anyw ere in t e world. To speed up t e initialization process, we recommend using t e
grap ic initialization process described on t e next page, w ic will usually provide a position fi x
wit in a few minutes.
Before you initialize, make sure t e GPSMAP 182/232 unit and antenna ave been correctly
installed on your vessel according to t e instructions in Appendix G. T e antenna needs to be in a
location wit a clear and unobstructed view of t e sky to receive satellite signals.
To turn the GPSMAP 182/232 on:
1. Press and hold the POWER key until the power tone sounds and the display comes on, then
release the POWER key.
A warning page will appear, asking you to read and acknowledge important information regarding
t e proper use of t e unit.
To acknowledge the warning:
1. After reading the warning, press the ENTER/MARK key if you agree.

Initializing the Receiver
To graphically initialize the GPSMAP 182/232:
1. Press the MENU key twice for the Main Menu. Press Up or Down on the ARROW KEYPAD until
the ‘GPS’ tab is highlighted, then press the MENU key once.
2. Using the ARROW KEYPAD, highlight ‘Initialize Position’ and press ENTER/MARK to initialize
the receiver from the map. he Initialize Position Page will appear, prompting you to select your
approximate location with the map cursor.
3. Use the ARROW KEYPAD to move the map cursor and point to your approximate location within
200 miles. If you have diffi culty identifying your position, press and release the IN key to see the
next lower map scale.
4. Once you have determined your approximate location on the map, press the ENTER/MARK key.
This does not “calibrate” the unit in any way, but rather helps to speed up the initial
satellite acquisition. If the unit displays “Ready (2D) or (3D )” during this process, it is
not necessary to initialize the unit.
T e GPSMAP 182/232 will now begin searc ing for t e appropriate satellites for your region and
s ould acquire a fi x wit in a few minutes. W en viewing t e ‘GPS’ tab on t e Main Menu, a signal
strengt bar for eac satellite in view will appear on t e bottom of t e page, wit t e appropriate
satellite number under eac bar. T e progress of satellite acquisition is s own in t ree stages:
• No signal strengt bars— t e receiver is looking for t e satellites indicated.
• Hollow signal strengt bars— t e receiver as found t e indicated satellite(s) and is collecting data.
• Solid signal strengt bars— t e receiver as collected t e necessary data and t e satellite(s) are
ready for use.
Once t e receiver as collected information from at least t ree satellites, t e top of t e screen will
display eit er “Ready (2D or 3D)”, and t e GPSMAP 182/232 is ready for use.

GPSMAP 182/232 Getting Started Tour
T e GARMIN GPSMAP 182/232 is a powerful electronic navigation system t at provides detailed
map coverage and convenient control of many advanced features rig t from t e screen display. T is
tour is designed to take you t roug t e basic pages and functions of t e system using t e simulator
mode. Once you’re familiar wit t e main pages and functions of t e unit, refer to t e reference section
for instructions on performing specifi c tasks and functions.
T e Getting Started Tour assumes t at t e receiver as been properly installed and initialized,
and you ave not c anged any of t e default unit settings. If you ave c anged any settings (position
formats, units of measure, etc.), t e descriptions and pictures in t e tour may not matc your
confi guration.
To turn the GPSMAP 182/232 on:
1. Press and hold the POWER key until the power tone sounds, then release the POWER key. he
Warning Page will appear while the unit conducts a self-test.
2. Once the self-test is complete, press the ENTER/MARK key, if you agree, to acknowledge the
warning.
T e GPS Information Page will appear as t e receiver begins acquiring satellites. From t is or any
ot er page, you may also adjust t e screen contrast and backlig ting.
To adjust the screen contrast:
1. Press POWER and the Light and Contrast window will appear.
2. o decrease or increase the screen contrast, press left or right on the ARROW KEYPAD.
3. Press the ENTER/MARK key to fi nish.
T e GPSMAP 182/232’s adjustable screen backlig ting is controlled wit t e POWER key, and
may be adjusted at any time from any page. T e backlig t can cycle t roug off, user-defi ned, and
maximum backlig t levels by repeatedly pressing t e POWER key.

Backlighting/
Simulator Mode
To turn on and adjust the backlighting:
1. Press POWER and the Light and Contrast window will appear.
2. Press POWER again and the user-defi ned level of backlighting will activate. You may adjust this
level by pressing UP or DOWN on the ARROW KEYPAD. If you press POWER one more time, the
backlighting will be at the maximum setting.
3. Press ENTER/MARK or QUIT when done.
T e backlig t will now cycle t roug off, t e user-defi ned, and maximum backlig t levels by
repeatedly pressing t e POWER key.
Eac page of t e GPSMAP 182/232’s system also features an options page, w ic gives you access
to ot er functions and features t at relate to t e specifi c page you are viewing. To get a feel for ow t e
options pages work, let’s put t e GPSMAP 182/232 into simulator mode.
To place the GPSMAP 182/232 in simulator mode:
1. Press the MENU key twice for the Main Menu. Press Up or Down on the ARROW KEYPAD until
the ‘GPS’ tab is highlighted, then press the MENU key once.
2. Use the UP or DOWN arrow of the ARROW KEYPAD to highlight the ‘Start Simulator’ option and
press ENTER/MARK. Choose ‘No’ to the retail demonstration and press the ENTER/MARK key.
3. Press the ENTER/MARK key to confi rm the ‘Running Simulator’ message that appears at the
bottom of the display. ‘Simulating’ will appear at the top of the Main pages.
Once t e simulator as been started, an ‘S’ will appear in t e lower left corner of every page. Now
you’re ready to continue t e rest of t e simulated tour. Keep in mind that the GPSMAP 182/232
does not track satellites in simulator mode, and this mode should never be used for actual
navigation All t e waypoint and route planning done in simulator mode will still be retained in
memory for future use.

Map Page
T e Map Page is one of fi ve main pages used in t e GPSMAP 182/232’s system. T e fi ve main pages
are t e Map Page, Compass Page, Numbers Page, Hig way Page, and Active Route Page. All fi ve pages
are linked toget er in a simple c ain, w ic allows you to scroll t roug t e pages in eit er direction
using t e PAGE and QUIT keys.
T e GPSMAP 182/232’s Map Page combines digital c artplotting wit a user-selectable display of
navigation data and a built-in worldwide database. It will also be t e page you use most to create
and edit waypoints and routes. Before we take off on our practice route, let’s take a brief look at its
various features and displays.
T e map display s ows your “boat” as a triangle marker on an electronically generated c art.
Geograp ic names, roads, markers and buoys t at are provided by t e optional BlueC art or MapSource
data are also s own. It also displays your track, routes and nearby waypoints. An on-screen cursor
lets you pan to ot er map areas, determine t e range and bearing to a position, and perform various
waypoint and route functions.
T e data window, located at t e top of t e page, provides a user-selectable display of various
navigation data, including speed over ground, distance to t e next navigation point, compass ribbon and
current position coordinates. T e current map scale setting is located at t e bottom rig t of t e page.

Map Cursor
Using the Map Cursor
Working from t e Map Page is a simple process t at centers around t e use of t e cursor.
Controlled by t e ARROW KEYPAD, t e cursor is an important tool t at can be used to pan to
ot er map locations, mark and edit waypoints and routes, and review position data of on-screen map
items and waypoints.
To get a feel for using t e Map Page and using t e cursor, try t e following exercise:
1. Use the IN/OUT keys to set the map scale to the 50 nm setting. Your boat should be near the center
of the map, at the receiver’s last known position. (If your boat isn’t where it should be, make sure
that you have initialized the receiver and acquired a position as described on pages 1-2.)
2. Use the ARROW KEYPAD to move the cursor. Notice how another data fi eld appears, showing
the bearing and distance from your boat to the cursor, along with the latitude/longitude of the
cursor.
3. Press the QUIT key to remove the cursor and re-center your boat on the map display.
As you become more familiar wit t e cursor, you’ll see t at t e map display actively scrolls or
‘pans’, letting you explore areas around t e world and create waypoints and routes. W erever you
move t e cursor, you’ll always be just one QUIT keystroke away from returning t e map to your
present position.
Now t at you’ve seen ow t e Map Page can be used to monitor your present location, let’s take a
minute to learn ow to mark and store your present position as a waypoint. (Since you’re in simulator
mode, t e present position displayed will be t e last position calculated by t e receiver, w ic s ould
be t e spot w ere you’ve initialized t e unit.) T is will also give you an opportunity to see ow t e
GPSMAP 182/232’s keypad and ENTER/MARK key are used for data entry and c anging t e waypoint
name and symbol.

Marking Waypoints
To mark your present position:
1. Hold down the ENTER/MARK key until the ‘New Waypoint’ window appears then release the
key. he window will show a default three-digit waypoint name/number (001), symbol (dot), and
position. You can leave the name as the auto-assigned number, but for this exercise, lets change
the name to ‘DOCK’.
2. Use the ARROW KEYPAD to highlight the waypoint name fi eld (001) and press ENTER/MARK.
You will see that just the fi rst ‘0’ is now highlighted.
3. Press LEF on the ARROW KEYPAD to clear the name fi eld.
4. Press UP or DOWN on of the ARROW KEYPAD until the letter ‘D’ appears, and then press RIGH
to go to the next space to the right, then UP or DOWN again until ‘O’ appears. Repeat this until you
have entered the name ‘DOCK’. If you make a mistake and select an incorrect character, simply press
LEF on the ARROW KEYPAD to backspace the cursor and then UP or DOWN to correct the entry.
(If you accidentally press ENTER/MARK before you are done, simply press ENTER/MARK again
and move the highlight to where you left off.)
5. After you have entered all the letters, press ENTER/MARK to confi rm the name.
6. o access the waypoint symbol page, highlight the waypoint symbol fi eld which is to the left of the
waypoint’s name and press ENTER/MARK. Note: he default symbol is a dot.
7. You will see an alphabetical list of available waypoint symbols to choose from. Press the ARROW
KEYPAD UP or DOWN until you highlight the ‘ANCHOR’ symbol. You will see a scroll bar on the
right of the window indicating your current position on the entire list of symbols.
8. Press ENTER/MARK to confi rm the ‘ANCHOR’ symbol.
9. Highlight ‘OK’ at the bottom of the window and press ENTER/MARK again to confi rm the ‘OK’
prompt and save the waypoint.
T e waypoint is now stored in memory. Note t at waypoints may also be created grap ically from
t e map display or by manually entering position coordinates. Eac of t ese tec niques is described in
t e reference section of t e manual and/or on your GPSMAP 182/232 Quick Reference Guide.

Using the NAV Key
Going to a Destination
GPS is all about marking positions as waypoints and navigating to t em using t e receiver’s steering
guidance and map displays. We’ve already seen ow to use t e ENTER/MARK key to store our present
position, so it’s time to move on to t e fun part—going to a destination.
T e NAV key, located on t e keypad above t e QUIT key, is t e primary tool used to select a
destination waypoint, TracBack, or a route to navigate. T e NAV key can be used in two primary
ways:
• Pressing NAV once displays a list of options from w ic you can select ‘Go To Point’, ‘Follow Route’,
‘Follow Track’, or ‘Stop Navigation’.
• Hig lig ting an on-screen waypoint or map item as a destination directly from t e Map Page and
pressing NAV allows you to grap ically select points to “Go To”.
For our simulated trip, you’re going to select a pre-programmed tour route using t e fi rst met od.
T is will also s ow ow t e MENU key is used t roug out t e GPSMAP 182/232 system to provide
tab style options and functions. Let’s start by c anging t e position to w ere t e practice route is
located.
To change the GPSMAP 182/232 position in simulator mode:
1. Press the MENU key twice to display the list of Main Menu tab items.
2. Use the UP or DOWN arrow of the ARROW KEYPAD to highlight the ‘Systm’ tab.
3. Highlight ‘Set Position’ in the simulator setup window and press ENTER/MARK.
4. From the Initialize Position page, press the MENU key. You will see ‘Enter As ext’ highlighted,
then press ENTER/MARK.
5. On the Enter Position window, press ENTER/MARK then use the ARROW KEYPAD to enter
N34°56.800’, W076°24.066’ and press ENTER/MARK when done, then press QUIT to return
to the Map Page.
