1 INTRODUCTION
PYRAsense series pyr nometers me sure the global irradiance on fl t surf ce
(W/m
2
), sum of direct sol r irr di nce nd diffuse irr di nce.
The PYRAsense LPS03 series f lls within the Spectrally Flat Class C pyr nometers
ccording to the ISO 9060:2018 st nd rd nd meets the requirements of the WMO
“Guide to Instruments nd Methods of Observ tion”.
The intern l temper ture, rel tive humidity nd pressure diagnostic sensors llow
keeping the pyr nometer oper ting conditions under control ll the time nd foresee
ny m inten nce intervention in dv nce, thus ensuring lw ys reli ble me sure-
ments.
The integr ted bubble level nd the djust ble feet f cilit te horizont l positioning
during inst ll tion. As option, they c n be equipped with tilt sensor (option T in the
ordering code) which, in ddition to f cilit ting the inst ll tion of the pyr nometer,
llows continuous monitoring of the correct inst ll tion.
The v rious models re distinguished by the type of output v il ble nd by the pres-
ence or bsence of the "tilt" sensor:

The pyr nometers re f ctory c libr ted in ccord nce with the ISO 9847:2023 (Type
A1) st nd rd: ”C libr tion of pyr nometers by comp rison to reference
pyr nometer”. The c libr tion is performed by comp rison with the reference s mple
c libr ted nnu lly t WRC (World R di tion Center).
The DATAsense PC pplic tion softw re, downlo d ble from the Delt OHM website,
llows configuring the sensor (e.g., Modbus p r meters, me suring r nge for the
n log output, etc.), monitor the me surements in re l time, even gr phic lly for the
irr di nce, nd s ve the v lues detected during the connection in file.

3MEASURING PRINCIPLE
PYRAsense series pyr nometers re b sed on thermopile sensor. The thermopile
sensitive surf ce is co ted with bl ck m tt p int, which llows the pyr nometer not
to be selective t different w velengths.
R di nt energy is bsorbed by the thermopile bl ck surf ce, thus cre ting difference
of temper ture between the center of the thermopile (hot junction) nd the pyr nom-
eter body (cold junction). Th nks to the Seebeck effect, the difference of temper ture
between hot nd cold junction is converted into difference of potenti l.
The pyr nometer spectr l r nge is determined by the tr nsmission of the gl ss dome,
with 32 mm outer di meter nd 4 mm thickness, which lso gr nts the thermopile
proper therm l insul tion from the wind nd reduce the sensitivity to therm l irr di-
nce. Furthermore, the dome protects the thermopile from the dust which, depositing
on the bl ckened p rt, could ch nge its spectr l sensitivity.
To prevent condens tion from forming on the intern l side of the dome under cert in
clim tic conditions, silic -gel is inserted inside the pyr nometer to bsorb moisture.

INSTALLATION
•The pyr nometer must be mounted in n e sy-to-re ch loc tion in order to cle n
the dome regul rly nd c rry out m inten nce. At the s me time, m ke sure th t
no buildings, constructions, trees or obstructions exceed the horizont l pl ne where
the pyr nometer lies. If this is not possible, select site where obstructions in the
p th of the sun from sunrise to sunset do not exceed 5 degrees of elev tion. N.B.:
The presence of obstructions on the horizon line affects significantly the
measurement of direct irradiance.
•The pyr nometer must be loc ted f r from ny kind of obstruction, which might re-
flect sunlight (or sun sh dow) onto the pyr nometer itself.
•The m st height does not exceed the pyr nometer pl ne to void me surement er-
rors c used by ny reflection or sh dow of the m st itself.
•In compli nce with ISO TR9901 st nd rd nd WMO recommend tions, if the pyr -
nometer is used without the sol r r di tion protection screen, it must be positioned
so th t the connector points to the North Pole, if the instrument is used in the North-
ern Hemisphere, nd to the South Pole, if used in the Southern Hemisphere. In ny
c se, it is better to follow this recommend tion even when the screen is used.
•For fixing, use the two M5 holes in the lower p rt of the pyr nometer. For n ccu-
r te horizont l positioning, use the bubble level integr ted in the pyr nometer.
Note: for horizontal positioning it is preferable to use the bubble level also in mod-
els equipped with a tilt sensor as it is more accurate; use the tilt sensor for posi-
tioning monitoring after installation. Use the tilt sensor for installation only if the
pyranometer must be positioned tilted with respect to the horizontal plane.

.2 E LECTRICAL CONNECTIONS
The metallic housing of the pyranometer should preferably be
grounded ( ) locally. In this case, do not connect the wire of the
cable corresponding to the housing to prevent ground loops.
Only if it is not possible to ground locally the metallic case of the
pyranometer, connect the wire of the cable corresponding to the
housing to ground.
Intern lly there re surge protection devices connected to the housing. Grounding the
housing llows the correct protection function lity of the devices.

RS 85 output:
The RS485 output is isol ted. Before connecting the pyr nometer to the RS485 network,
set the ddress nd the communic tion p r meters, if different from the f ctory preset
(see “Configur tion” ch pter).
Analog output:
In the LPS03MAx models the type of n log output is configur ble (def ult 4…20 mA,
see “Configur tion” ch pter). The pyr nometer power supply nd the lo d resist nce
v ry ccording to the type of n log output configured:

5CONFIGURATION
It is possible to ch nge the seri l communic tion p r meters (Modbus ddress, B ud
R te, p rity/stop bit) nd, for models with n log output, the type of n log output
nd the glob l irr di nce me suring r nge corresponding to the n log output.
The configur tion of the pyr nometer c n be done:
•With the id of DATAsense PC pplic tion softw re (see the softw re online
help), downlo d ble from Delt OHM website.
•By sending seri l comm nds from PC, vi st nd rd communic tion progr m
(see the ch pter “ASCII propriet ry protocol”).
•Vi the “Holding Registers” in MODBUS-RTU mode (only for the seri l communi-
c tion p r meters, see the ch pter “Modbus-RTU protocol”).
By def ult, the instrument h s MODBUS ddress 1 nd communic tion p r meters
19200, 8E1.
Analog output (only LPS03MAx):
By def ult, the n log output is 4…20 mA → 0…2000 W/m

It is possible:
•to ssoci te the n log output to different glob l irr di nce r nge, within the
full me suring r nge;
•ch nge the output type (possible outputs 4…20 mA, 0…20 mA, 0…1 V, 0…5 V or
0…10 V);
•to reverse the direction of the output, so th t the output decre ses s the me s-
urement incre ses.
Connection to PC:
To connect the pyr nometer to PC USB port, to check or ch nge the configur tion,
the CP2 B-5 (LPS03M0x) or CP2 B-8 (LPS03MAx) option l c bles c n be used,
which lso llow the pyr nometer to be powered vi the USB port.
To use the CP24B-x c bles, the rel ted USB drivers must be inst lled in the PC.
Altern tively, it is possible to use st nd rd RS485/USB or RS485/RS232 converter,
powering the pyr nometer sep r tely (the minimum supply volt ge is 7 V).

6ASCII PROPRIETARY PROTOCOL
To communic te with the pyr nometer vi the ASCII propriet ry protocol:
1. Connect the pyr nometer to the PC nd st rt st nd rd seri l communic tion
progr m.
2. In the seri l communic tion progr m, set the B ud R te 57600, the p r meters
8N2 nd the COM port number to which the pyr nometer is connected.
3. Power the pyr nometer (or power cycle if lre dy powered) nd send the com-
m nd @ within 5 seconds from the instrument power on (the pyr nometer re-
plies &| if the comm nd @ is recognized).
Note: if the CP24B-x c ble is used, to power cycle the pyr nometer, disconnect
the c ble for few seconds from the PC USB port, then reconnect it.
. Send the comm nd CAL USER ON (the pyr nometer replies CAL USER
ON;USER ON) to en ble the configur tion ch nge. The comm nd CAL USER ON is
not required only for re ding the settings.
5. Send the comm nds described in the t bles below.
The comm nd CAL USER ON is utom tic lly dis bled fter few minutes of in ctivity.
The comm nd CAL USER ON c n be dis bled immedi tely by sending the comm nd CAL
EXIT.

7MODBUS-RTU PROTOCOL
By def ult, the pyr nometer h s Modbus ddress 1 nd communic tion p r meters
19200, 8E1. The ddress nd the communic tion p r meters c n be ch nged by using
the ppropri te seri l comm nds of the propriet ry protocol or, ltern tively, directly
with Modbus comm nds by ch nging the v lue of the Holding Registers described l t-
er.
The Modbus-RTU protocol is ctive fter few seconds from the sensor power on.

9USE OF THE DIAGNOSTIC SENSORS
The intern l temper ture, rel tive humidity, pressure nd tilt (only LPS03MxT) diag-
nostic sensors llow keeping the pyr nometer oper ting conditions under control ll
the time nd foresee ny m inten nce intervention in dv nce, thus ensuring lw ys
reli ble me surements.
Internal temperature
As rule, the intern l temper ture of the pyr nometer is on ver ge 5 to 10 °C high-
er th n the extern l mbient temper ture. Temper tures th t re excessively lower or
higher th n indic ted m y be sign of m lfunctions.
Monitoring the intern l temper ture therefore m kes it possible to determine whether
the irr di nce me surement c n be considered reli ble.
Internal relative humidity
To minimize condens tion nd keep me surements ccur te, desicc nt silic -gel is
provided inside the pyr nometer b se to bsorb moisture. The silic -gel life is t le st
4 ye rs. The long-term monitoring of the intern l rel tive humidity of the pyr nome-
ter llows the efficiency of the silic -gel to be checked. A progressive upw rd trend in
rel tive humidity indic tes the progressively decre sing bility of silic -gel to bsorb
moisture.
The intern l rel tive humidity depends not only on the s tur tion level of the silic -gel
but lso on the temper ture of the pyr nometer; therefore, short-term humidity mon-
itoring is not p rticul rly signific nt in determining the condition of the silic -gel. Rel -
tive humidity monitoring c n be nnu l.
It is dvis ble to detect the rel tive humidity during the night, when the temper ture
is lower nd the rel tive humidity is higher.
Silic -gel c n be considered close to s tur tion when the intern l rel tive humidity is
persistently bove 50% t temper tures below 20 °C.
Internal pressure
Monitoring the intern l pressure of the pyr nometer llows the housing to be checked
for tight se l (no le k ge). The pressure/temper ture r tio should rem in pproxi-
m tely const nt.
Tilt
Monitoring the inclin tion ngle of the pyr nometer inst ll tion llows for the detec-
tion of unw nted displ cements th t m y occur in the long term or s result of im-
p cts suffered by the inst ll tion.
T ke the me surement of the Tilt sensor immedi tely fter inst ll tion nd consider it
s reference for subsequent me surements.
Alarm thresholds
Thresholds c n be defined for intern l temper ture, rel tive humidity nd pressure.
When the thresholds re exceeded n l rm condition is gener ted, which c n be re d
vi the Modbus “Discrete inputs” or the DATAsense softw re.
