agencyforaShip-Radiotelephonelicense.Thislicense
includesthecallsignwhichisyourcraft’sidenticationfor
radiopurposes.
Operators License
ArestrictedRadiotelephoneOperatorPermitisthelicense
mostoftenheldbysmallvesselradiooperatorswhena
radioisnotrequiredforsafetypurposes.

The GME GX600D is a VHF FM radio designed to
operate in the 156 - 163 MHz marine band.
TheGX600Dhasanumberofenhancedfeaturesincluding
fullyuserprogrammableChannelScanning,DualWatch
andTripleWatchfunctions,aprogrammable‘Instant’
channelmemoryandadjustablebacklighting.Inadditionit
incorporatesDigitalSelectiveCallingandsupportsposition
reportingwhenconnectedtoaGPSreceiver.

DIGITAL SELECTIVE CALLING (DSC)
TheDigitalSelectiveCalling(DSC)featureonyourGX600D
usespreformatteddigitaldatamessagesinsteadofvoiceto
transmiturgentorimportantinformationtoanotherradio.
DSCalertsallradioswithinrangetoadistressmessage
evenwhenalisteningwatchisnotbeingmaintained.
Thisincreasesthechancesofyoursignalbeingheard.
DSCispartoftheGlobalMaritimeDistressandSafety
System(GMDSS)whichisexpectedtoeventuallyreplace
listeningwatchesondistressfrequenciesandwillbe
usedtoannounceallroutineandurgentmaritimesafety
informationbroadcasts.
DSC AND GPS
DSCoperationisenhancedbytheadditionofaGPS
receiverorchartplotterconnectedtoyourGX600D.
WhenaGPSisconnected,yourdistresscallcan
automaticallyincludeyourcurrentpositionandtime,while
achartplotterwillallowyoutodisplaythepositionof
anothervessel.IfaGPSisnotconnected,DSCcallscanstill
besentandreceivedtoalerttheoperatorofanothervessel
forsubsequentvoicecommunication.
MARINE MOBILE SERVICE IDENTITY
(MMSI)
TheMMSIisa9-digitnumberusedtoidentifyaradiothat
iscapableofusingDSC.Thenumberisusedtoselectively
callothervessels.

providesamethodforallvesselswithacommoninterest
(eg:ayachtcluborashingeet)tobecontactedwith
oneDSCcall.GroupMMSI’sareusuallyissuedbyaclub
ororganisationforusebymembersparticipatingingroup
activities(suchasyachtracingetc).
RANGE
TherangeofVHFtransmissionsdependsonantennaheight,
transmitterpowerandtheterrainoverwhichthesignals
pass.Shiptoshipcommunicationsshouldbepossible
overatleast8nauticalmilesanduptoabout27nautical
miles.Shiptoshorerangeswilloftenbegreaterduetothe
increasedheightoftheshoreantennaandcommunications
of25to50nauticalmilesarepossible.

CHANNEL SELECTION
Standard Marine Channels
Brieypressthe keytostepupwardsonechannelorthe
keytostepdownwardsonechannel.Ahighbeepwillbe
heardateachpress.The or keysarealsoduplicated
onthefrontofthemicrophone.
Press and hold the or keysfor1.5secondstoscroll
quicklyupwardsordownwardsthroughthechannelsat
arateof10channelspersecond.Whenthekeyisreleased
channelscrollingstops.
Weather Channels
TheUSweatherchannelsareavailableonlywhenthe
USAChannelSethasbeenselected.Whenavailable,
weatherchannelsarenumbered01–10andareinserted
intothenormalchannelsequencebelowmarinechannel
01.Theyareselectedintheusualwayusingthe or
keys.WeatherchannelsareidentiedbytheWXiconon
thedisplay.
Private Channels
Upto20privatechannelscanbeprogrammedinto
theGX600Dfororganisationsthathavebeenofcially
allocatedspecialfrequencies.Privatechannelsare
programmedonapplicationbyyournearestGMEbranch
ofce.Allrequestsforprivatechannelprogrammingmust
besupportedbyACMA(AustralianCommunicationsand
MediaAuthority)documentation.
Ifprivatechannelshavebeeninstalledtheywillappearas
A0–A9andB0–B9aboveCH88.
SQUELCH
To open the squelch:
BrieypresstheSQLkey.Alowbeepwillbeheardandthe
squelchwillopen.BrieypresstheSQLkeyagaintoclose
thesquelch.Ahighbeepwillbeheardandthesquelchwill
berestoredtoitspresetlevel.
Setting the Squelch Preset Level:
Thepresetsquelchlevelcanbeadjustedtosuitlocal
conditions.Ifyouareinanelectricallynoisylocationor
unwantedweaksignalskeepopeningthesquelch,you
canadjustthesquelchsettingsothattheGX600D
remainsquiet.Notethatincreasingthepresetsquelch
levelwillmeanthatstrongersignalswillberequiredto
overcomethesquelchandmayresultinmissedcalls
fromweakersignals.
Thebestsettingistheminimumonerequiredtokeepthe
receiverquiet.
To enter the Squelch setting mode:
Press and hold the SQLkeyfor1.5secondsuntilahigh
beepisheard.Thepresentsquelchsettingwillbedisplayed
indigitsfrom-1to-9with-1beingminimumand-9being
maximumsquelch.Thedefaultsettingis-2.Whileinthis
mode,brieypressthe or keystoincreaseordecrease
thesquelchlevelrespectivelyasrequired.Brieypressthe
SQLkeyagaintoexitthesquelchsettingmodeorwait
5secondsanditwillexitautomatically.Alowbeepwill
beheard.
Keylock (Optional MC540 microphone only)
Tolockthekeypadpressandholdthe keyonthe
MC540microphone.Ahighbeepwillbeheardandthe
symbolwillbedisplayed.Pressandholdthe
keyagaintocancelthekeylockfunction.
Whilekeylockisenabled,onlythePTT,,SQL,
16 and DISTRESSkeysareaccessible.Allotherkeys
arelocked.
Pressing 16willcancelthekeylockandreverttoChannel
16onhighpower.
Pressing DISTRESSwillcancelthekeylockandactivate
thedistressmenu.
TRANSMITTING
To Transmit:
Press the Push to Talk (PTT)switchonthemicrophone.
Holdthemicrophoneabout5-8cmfromyourfaceand
speakatanormalvoicelevel.Themicrophoneisquite
sensitivesoitisnotnecessarytoraiseyourvoiceorshout.
ReleasethePTTwhenyouhavenishedtalking.
NOTE: PTTtransmissionsaredisabledonChannel70.
Time-out Timer
Excessivetransmissiontimeiscontrolledbyatime-out
timer.IfthePTTisheldformorethan5minutes,the
transmitterwillbetemporarilydisabledtoprevent
accidentaljammingofthechannelfrequency.Tenseconds
beforethetimeoutoccurs,the‘TX’iconwillashanda
lowwarningbeepwillsoundtonotifyyouoftheimpending
timeout.Oncethetimeoutoccurs,boththebacklightand
the‘TX’iconwillashandanotherlowwarningbeepwill
beheard.Atthistimethetransmitterisdisabled.

To reset the timer and re-enable the transmitter:
ReleasethePTTswitchandwait10seconds.Duringthis
timetheradiowilldisplay‘TXINHIBITEDFOR10SECS’.
NOTE: EvenifthePTTswitchisreleasedduringthe10
secondwarningperiod,thePTTwillstillbeinhibitedfor
10 seconds after the PTTisreleased.
CHANNEL 16
Brieypressthe16keytoswitchstraighttoChannel16.
Allpreviouscontrolsettings(suchasscanningorlow
transmitterpower)willbecancelledandtheradiowill
be restored to normal operation with high transmit
powerselected.
SELECTING CHANNEL SETS
TheGX600DisprogrammedwiththreeChannelSets
-International,USAandCanada.TheseChannelSets
supportvariouschannelandfrequencyallocationsforother
partsoftheworld.Onceyouhaveselectedtherequired
ChannelSetforyourlocation,youshouldnotneedto
changeitagainunlessyouhavemovedtoanothercountry.
When using the GX600D in Australia:
TheInternationalChannelSetshouldbeselected.
To change the Channel Set:
PleaserefertotheCongurationMenuSetuponpage17
ofthismanual.
DISPLAY BACKLIGHTING/ CONTRAST
TheLCDdisplayisbacklitforeasyviewingatnight.The
brightnessandcontrastofthebacklightingcanbeadjusted.
Backlightsettingsareaccessedthroughthemenu.For
detailsonsettingthedisplaybrightnessorcontrastplease
refer to the CongurationMenuSetuponpage16ofthis
manual.
TRANSMIT POWER
TheGX600DhasbothHigh(25Watt)andLow(1Watt)
transmitterpowersettings.Forlongrangetransmissionsthe
powershouldbesetto25Watts.Forlocaltransmissionsa
1Wattsettingwillconservepowerandreduceinterference
tonearbyradios.Thedefaultsettingis25Watts.
To switch between High and Low transmitter
power:
Brieypressthe25/1Wkey.AhighbeepindicatesHigh
power is selected while a low beep indicates Low power
isselected.WhenLowpowerisselected‘LO’isdisplayed.
NOTE: TheradioalwaysdefaultstoHighpowerwhen
Channel16isselected.
• SelectingChannel16usingthe16keywillresetALL
channelstoHighpower.
• SelectingChannel16usingthe or keysresetsonly
channel16toHighPowerbutretainsanyLowpower
settingontheotherchannels.

WORKING CHANNEL MEMORY
TheGX600Dhasadedicated‘workingchannel’memory
calledChannelAwhichallowsyoutostoreandrecallan
often-usedworkingchannel.Thememoryisaccessedusing
the CHAN Akey.ChannelAisalsousedasthepriority
channelfortheTripleWatchfunction(seepage7).
To Store a Frequency into Channel A:
Selecttherequiredchannelusingthe or keys,
then press and hold the CHAN Akeyfor1.5seconds.
Thechannelnumberwillashthenahighbeepwill
beheardasthechannelisstored.
To Recall Channel A:
BrieypresstheCHAN Akeytoswitchimmediatelytothe
channelstoredinthatmemory.Iftheradiowasscanning
thescanwillbecancelled.
DUAL WATCH KEY (DW)
TheDualWatchfunctionisa2channelscanfeaturewhere
theGX600DswitchesbetweenChannel16andanyother
selectedchannel.Thisallowsyoutomonitoraworking
orclubchannelwhilestillbeingabletoreceiveimportant
broadcastsonChannel16.
To use the Dual Watch function:
Selectyourpreferredworkingchannel-eitherwiththe
or keysorbyselectingtheCHAN Amemory-then
brieypresstheDWkey.Ahighbeepwillbeheardand
both‘DW’and‘CH16’willappearonthedisplaytoindicate
youareDualWatchingtheselectedchannelwithChannel
16.TheGX600Dwillnowmonitortheselectedchannel
ANDChannel16byalternatingequallybetweenthem.
Duringthistimethechanneldisplaywillremainonthe
selectedchannel.
To cancel Dual Watching:
BrieypresstheDWkeyagain.
DUAL WATCH FEATURES
If a signal appears on Channel 16:
TheradiowillswitchimmediatelytoChannel16and‘16’

TRIPLE WATCH KEY (TW)
TheTripleWatchfunctionisanextensionoftheDual
Watchfeature.ItallowstheGX600DtomonitorChannel
16,aselectedchannelANDaprioritychannel.Each
channelisscannedequallyforsignalswithprioritygiven
rsttoCH16,thenthePrioritychannelandlastlythe
selectedchannel.
WhenTripleWatchisselectedthe‘TW’iconisdisplayed
alongwithChannel16,theselectedChannelandthe
PriorityChannel.The‘Priority’Channelistheonestored
intheCHANAmemory.
To use the Triple Watch mode:
Firstprogramyourprioritychannel(thedefaultpriority
channelis9)intotheCHANAmemory,thenselectyour
preferredworkingchannelusingthe or keys.
NowpressandholdtheTWkeyfor1.5secondsuntil
ahighbeepisheard.‘TW’andtheselectedchannel
willbedisplayedalongwithCH16andthePriority
Channelnumber.
To change the selected channel at any time:
Press the or keys.
To cancel Triple Watch
BrieypresstheTWkeytoswitchtoDualWatchmode.
A high beep will be heard

Press and hold the TWkeytoreturntonormaloperation.
Alowbeepwillbeheard.
TRIPLE WATCH FEATURES
If a signal appears on Channel 16:
TheradiowillswitchimmediatelytoChannel16and
‘CH16’willbedisplayed.Atthispointtheselected
channelandthePrioritychannelarenolongerbeing
monitoredbecauseChannel16hashighestpriority.During
this time the PTTmaybepressedfornormaltransmissions
onChannel16.OnceChannel16hasbecomeinactivefor
5secondstheTripleWatchfunctionwillresume.
If a signal appears on the Priority channel:
ScanningwillpauseonthePrioritychannelBUTChannel16
willcontinuetobemonitoredevery2seconds(theselected
channelisnotmonitored).DuringthistimethePTTmay
bepressedfornormaltransmissionsonthePrioritychannel
(monitoringofChannel16ceaseswhiletransmitting).Once
thePrioritychannelhasbecomeinactivefor5seconds
TripleWatchwillresume.
If a signal appears on the selected Channel:
ScanningwillpauseontheselectedchannelBUTchannel
16andthePrioritychannelwillcontinuetobemonitored
every2seconds.DuringthistimethePTTmaybe
pressed for normal transmissions on the selected channel
(monitoringofchannel16andthePrioritychannelceases
whiletransmitting).Oncetheselectedchannelhasbecome
inactivefor5secondstheTripleWatchwillresume.
To Transmit on the selected Channel
while Triple Watching:
SimplypressthePTT.TheTripleWatchfunctionwillpause
duringthetransmissionandremainpauseduntil5seconds
afterallactivityhasceasedonthechannel.TripleWatchwill
thenresume.
To Transmit on the Priority channel
while Triple Watching:
Brieypressthe CHAN A.TripleWatchiscancelledand
thePrioritychannelwillbecometheselectedchannel.Now
press the PTTandtransmitintheusualway.Whenyour
conversationhasended,re-selectyourselectedchannel.

To Transmit on Channel 16 while Triple Watching:
Press the 16key.TripleWatchwillbecancelledand
theradiowillswitchstraighttoChannel16.Nowpressthe
PTTandtransmitintheusualway.Whenyourconversation
hasended,pressandholdtheTWkeytoresumeTriple
Watching.
SCANNING
TheScanfunctionallowstheGX600Dtoscanthrough
aseriesofuserselectedchannelslookingforactivity.
Scanningisdoneinanascendingsequenceatarate
of10channelspersecond.
Channels can be selected and stored for scanning from
anyoftheavailablechannels,includingweatherchannels
(iftheUSAchannelsetisselected)andprivatechannels
(iftheyareenabled).
NOTE: Thetransmitterisdisabledwhilescanning.Ifthe
PTTispressed,alowbeepwillbeheardandthePTTis
ignored.
To store Channels for Scanning:
Selecttherequiredchannelusingthe or keys,then
press and hold the SCANkeyfor1.5seconds.Ahigh
beepwithbeheardand‘M’willappearnexttothe
channelnumber.
Repeattheprocesstoremoveapreviouslystoredchannel
fromthescanlist.Whenachannelisremovedalowbeepis
heardand‘M’disappearsfromthedisplayonthatchannel.
To begin Scanning:
BrieypresstheSCANkey.TheGX600Dwillscanupwards
throughthestoredchannelsat10channelspersecondand
thedisplaywillshowrapidlychangingchannelnumbers.
Ifasignalislocated,scanningwillpauseonthatchannel
andwillremainfor5secondsafterthesignalhasgone.

includingDistressCalls,AllShipsandGroupCallsaswell

hastworeceivers,oneofwhichisdedicatedtoCH70.

MAKING A DISTRESS CALL:
1.OpentheRedDISTRESScover.
2.BrieypresstheDISTRESSkey.Thedisplayshowsthe
‘Natureofdistress’Menulist.
3.Usethe or keystoselectthenatureofthedistress.
Thelistincludes:Undened,Fire,Flooding,Collision,
Grounding,Listing,Sinking,Disabled,Abandoning,
PiracyandManOverboard.
4.Withthecorrectdistressitemselected,pressandhold
the DISTRESSkeyfor5seconds.Thedisplaywillash
andtheradiowillcountfrom5downto1,beepingat
eachcount.
NOTE:Tocancelthedistresscall,releasetheDISTRESS

Selecting a location
Itisadvisabletospendalittletimeselectingthebest
locationforyourGX600D.Themountingbracketcanbe
rotatedabove,beloworbehindtheradioenablingtheradio
tobemountedinawiderangeoflocations.Inaddition,
usingtheoptionalushmountingkits(MK600,MK001,
MK002)theGX600Dcanbemounteddirectlyinapanelor
dashboard.Theushmountingkitsallowforinstallationor
replacementofanyexistingVHFradio.
UPRIGHT OR OVERHEAD MOUNTING
Keepthefollowingpointsinmindwhenchoosingalocation.
• TheGX600DisdesignedtomeettheIP67specication
whichallowsfordirectwaterspray.However,we
recommendyouselectalocationthatwillminimise
excessiveexposuretowatersplashesorcontinuousrain.
• Selectalocationthatwon’texposeyourradioto
continuousdirectsunlightwhichcouldcauseoverheating
orUVdegradation.
• Ensurethatthelocationallowsafreeowofairaround
theheatsinkonthebackoftheradio.
• Themicrophoneandallcontrolsshouldbereadily
accessibleandtheloudspeakereasilyheardfromthe
normalsteeringposition.Anextensionspeaker(SPK600)
canbeinstalledifrequired.
• Forbestresultsconnectthebatteryleadsdirectlytothe
vessel’sbattery.Ifyouneedtoextendthepowerleadsto
reachthebatteryuseheavyinsulatedautomotivewireof
atleast#10gauge.
• Componentsandcurrentsintheradiocreatemagnetic
elds.Toavoidinterferencetoshipscompassesor
autopilotsensors,theGX600Dshouldbemountedat
least300mmfromsuchequipment.
INSTALLING THE UNIT
Afterchoosingyourlocation,holdtheunitwiththe
mountingbracketattachedintothedesiredpositionand
markthelocationwithapencil.Removethemounting
bracketfromtheradioanddrillthemountingholes.Boltor
screwthebracketinplaceusinghardwaresuitableforthe
mountingsurface.Theunitissuppliedwithstainlesssteel
screws;however,ifthemountingsurfaceisunsuitablefor
screwsyoumayneedtoreplacethesewithstainlesssteel
bolts.Rememberthexingsforoverheadmountedunits
mayhavetowithstandheavypoundingwhenthevesselis
inroughwaterorbeingtowedonatrailer.
