POWERING THE RADIO
YourTX670ispoweredbythreeAAbatteries(Ni-MH).Ifleft
unused,thebatterieswilldischargewithinafewmonths.If
youhavenotusedyourTX670forsometime,youwillneedto
rechargeyourbatteriesbeforeuse.
Installing the Batteries
Batteryinstallationismoreconvenientwhenthebeltclipis
removed.Todothis,releasethespringclipandslidethebelt
clipdownwardandawayfromtheradiobody.
1.Pressthecentretopareaofthebatterycoverand
slidedownwards.
2.Installthethreerechargeablebatteriesasindicatedonthe
batteryhousing,slide
coverbackinto
positionuntilit‘clicks’
intoplace.

Charging the Batteries
YourTX670issuppliedwithanACadapterwhichwillrecharge
afullydischargedsetof1500mAhbatteriestofullcapacityin
around15-16hours.
1.Plugthechargerintoastandard240VoltACoutlet.
2.Connectthechargertomic/chargesocketontheradio.
Battery Low Alert
Whenthebatteryiconblinksonthedisplay,thebatterylevelis
lowandthebatteriesshouldberechargedorreplaced.Ifthe
batteriesarenotcharged,anaudiotonewillthensoundto
warntheuserthatthebatteriesarealmostdischarged.
Battery Usage
Thetimetakentodischargethebatterieswilldependonhow
youusetheTX670.The1500mAhbatteriessuppliedare
powerfulenoughforafulldaysuseunderaverageconditions.
Conserving Battery Power
TheTX670hasbuilt-inpowersavingfeaturestohelpyouget
themaximumamountoftimebetweencharges.Ifyouneedto
operateyourTX670inasituationwhereyourequiremaximum
batterylife(e.g.aremotesitewherethereisnoconvenient
rechargingfacilitynearby)thefollowinghintscangreatly
reducetheamountofpowerdrawnfromthebatteries.
Standby Mode
TheTX670willautomaticallyenterthe‘Standby’modewhen
itisinactive(i.e.nottransmittingorreceivingsignals).Whilein
Standbymodeitwillstillcheckforincomingsignalsbutitwill
drawconsiderablylesspowerfromthebatteries.Assoonas
asignalisheardorthekeysarepressedtheTX670will‘wake
up’again.ThisStandbymodeisautomaticandbyitselfcan
extendthebatterylifebymanyhours.
Using CTCSS
Ifyouareexpectingtoreceivesignalsonabusychannel,you
canprogramthatchannelforCTCSSoperationandgetthe

otherpersontocallyouusingthesameCTCSStone.Yourradio
willthenremaininStandbyandignoreallothersignalsuntil
your selected CTCSS tone is received.
Scanning
TheTX670drawsmorepowerfromthebatterieswhen
scanningthanwhenmonitoringasinglechannel.Thisis
becauseitmust‘wakeup’moreoftentomonitoreachchannel
foractivity.Youcanlengthenthebatterylifebyavoidingany
unnecessaryscanning.Inaddition,scanningincreasesthe
chanceofndingasignaltherebykeepingthereceiver‘awake’
andtheSquelchopenmoreoften.
Low Transmit Power Settings
Thetransmitterhasbothhighandlowpowersettings.Ifyou
areonlyoperatingovershortdistances,areinareasonably
highlocationorareclosetoalocalrepeater,tryusingthe
Lowtransmitterpowersetting.Thisreducesthetransmitter
powerfrom2Wattsto1Watteffectivelydoublingthetalk
timeavailable.
GENERAL OPERATION
Power On/Off
Rotate the
Volume
controlclockwisepastthe‘click’toturnthe
radio ON.Rotatethecontrolcounter-clockwisepasttheclickto
turn the radio OFF again.
Adjusting the Volume
Withtheunitpoweredon,rotatethe
Volume
controlclockwise
toincreasethevolumeandcounter-clockwisetodecrease
the volume.
Display Lighting
TheLCDbacklightingactivatesautomaticallywheneverakeyis
pressedandturnsoffautomaticallyafterabout5seconds.

Receiving signals
WhiletheTX670isnotreceivingsignals,itwillremaininthe
Standbymodetoconservebatterypower.
Whenasignalisreceived,theLEDindicatorontheupperedge
oftheradiowilllightgreenandthe iconwillappearonthe
display.Adjustthe
Volume
controlforacomfortable
listening level.
IftheincomingsignalisencodedwithaCTCSStonethat
matchestheonesetinyourradio,theLEDindicatorwilllight
orangeandyouwillbeabletohearthesignalinthespeaker.
IftheLEDindicatorlightsgreenandthe iconappears
butyoucannothearthesignal,itislikelythatyourradiohas
CTCSSenabledandtheincomingsignalisnotusingyour
selectedCTCSStone(see‘ModeSettings’formoredetailson
CTCSSsettings).
Ifnofurthersignalsarereceived,theunitwillrevertto
Standbymode.
Transmitting
Totransmit,pressandholdthePush-To-Talk(
PTT
)switch.The
otherradioyouaretalkingtomustbesettothesamechannel
(andCTCSScodeifapplicable).HoldtheTX670approximately
5to8cmsfromyourfacewiththeantennaverticalandspeak
intothebuilt-inmicrophone.
Whilethe
PTT
switchispressed,theLEDindicatoronthe
upperedgeoftheradiowilllightredandthe iconwill
appearontheLCD.
Whenyouhavenishedspeaking,releasethe
PTT
switchto
receiveincomingsignals(itisnotpossibletotransmitand
receiveatthesametime).Ifnofurthersignalsarereceived,the
unitwillreverttoStandbymode.
TIP:
ThePTTswitchcanalsobeusedtotransmitaCallAlarm
melody.WhentheCallAlarmmelodyisenabled(seeMode
settingsformoredetailsontheCallAlarmsettings),pressing
the
PTT
switchtwicequicklywillcallanotherpartyonthe
samechannelandplaytheCallAlarmmelodyintheirradio’s

speaker.Whenthishappens,the
iconwillappearand
theLEDindicatorwilllightredforabout3seconds.Thecall
alarmcanonlybesentonceperminute.
Duplex/Monitor Key
TheDuplex/Monitorkeyisadualfunctionkeythatcontrols
boththeDuplexandMonitorfunctions.
DUP Key
DuplexoperationallowstheTX670totransmitonadifferent
frequencytothatwhichitreceives.Thisallowsoperation
throughrepeaterstationsinyourarea.Repeatersautomatically
re-transmityoursignaloveramuchwiderarea,providing
greatlyincreasedrange.TheDuplexmodeonlyworkson
channels1-8.WithDuplexselected,yourTX670actually
transmits 30 channels higher than it receives.

Squelchisopen,theLEDindicatorontheupperedgeofthe
radiowilllightgreen,the iconwillappearonthedisplay
andyouwillhearstaticorhissifthechannelisclear.Donot
transmit if you hear any conversations. Press and hold the
MON
keyagaintoclosetheSquelch.

ToactivateordeactivateCTCSS,thecurrentchannelmusthave
a CTCSS code selected via the MODE key,(seeMODEkey
settingsformoredetails).
SCAN/Memory Key
TheSCANkeyisadualfunctionkeythatcontrolsbothScan
andMemoryFunctions.
Scanning Function
ChannelScanningallowsyoutomonitorchannelsthathave
beenincludedintheactivescanlist.Theactivescanlist
includesallchannelswhichdisplaytheicon‘
M
’ontheLCD.
Toenablechannelscanning,brieypressthe
SCAN
key.‘SCAN’
willbedisplayedandtheradiowillshowrapidlychanging
channelnumbersasitscansthroughthechannels.While
scanning,brieypressthe or keystoselectthe
scan direction.
ToexittheScanmode,brieypressthe
SCAN
keyagain.
TheTX670willreturntonormaloperationand‘SCAN’will
disappearfromthedisplay.
Scanning Features
•Ifasignalisreceived,thescanispaused,allowingyou
totransmitandreceiveonthatchannel.Theradiowill
automaticallyresumescanningafewsecondsafterthelast
receptionortransmission.
•Pressthe
PTT
switchwhiletheunitisscanningtojumpto
thehomechannel(thehomechannelisthechannelthe
radiowasonatthetimescanningwasactivated).Youcan
thentransmitandreceiveonthatchannel.Theradiowill
automaticallyresumescanningafewsecondsafterthelast
receptionortransmission.
•
Whentheunithasstoppedonabusychannel,pressthe or
keysto‘skip’overthebusychannelandcontinuescanning.
TIP:
TheScanmodewillreducetheoverallbatterylife
becausetheStandby(batterysaver)featureisoverridden.

Youshouldavoidscanningifthebatteriesarerunninglow
andyouneedtoconservepower.
Memory Function
TheMemoryfunctionenablesanddisablesthecurrentchannel
tobememorisedintothescanninglist.Whenthechannelis
memorisedwiththe‘MEM’iconontheLCD,scanningwill
includethechannel.Whenthechannelisdeletedfromthe
scanninglist,thechannelwillbeskippeduponscanning.All
channelsaresavedtoMemoryduringmanufacture.Todisable
theMemory,pressandholdthe
SCAN/MEM
key.

ToactivatetheKey-Lock,pressandholdtheModebuttonfor
about2seconds.The iconwillappearonthedisplay.

1. CTCSS Code Selection
TheContinuousToneCodedSquelchSystem(CTCSS)isa
Squelchquietingsystemthatallowsgroupsofuserstoshare
thesamechannelwithoutdisturbingeachother.Ituses1of
38lowfrequencytonestoopenandclosetheSquelchonthe
radio.TheCTCSScodesdonotpreventothersfromhearingyour
transmission.Theysimplyprovideyouwithaquieterchannelby
preventingyoufromhearingtransmissionsthatarenotusing
the same code as you and are therefore not directed at you.
Note:
TocommunicatewithotherUHFradiosusingCTCSS,
allradiosyouwishtocommunicatewithmustbeswitchedto
the same channel and have the same CTCSS code selected.
IfyouwishtoreceivesignalsfromUHFradiosthatarenot
usingCTCSSyouwillneedtoeitherdisableCTCSSonthat
channelorsettheCTCSScodeto‘oF‘asdescribedinthe
following‘note’.
To select a CTCSS code

selectedlowpower,thissettingwillnotbeindicated.
3. VOX Settings
TheVOXfeatureletsyouhavehands-freeconversations.When
youspeak,themicrophoneautomaticallydetectsyourvoice(or
othernearbysound)causingtheradiototransmitwithoutthe
needtopressthePTTswitch.
To set radio for VOX operation
Fromthe‘

’mode:
1 Press the MODEkeyTHREE(3)timestoselecttheVOX
settingmode.‘VOX’willashonthedisplay.
2. Press the or keystoselectthesensitivityfrom1
(minimum)to3(maximum).Theminimumsettingrequiresa

visibleonthedisplay.
4. Dual Watch Settings
TheDualWatchmodeletsyoumonitortwochannelsatthe
sametime.WhileinDualWatchmode,theunitwillmonitor
boththecurrentlyselectedchannelandaseconddual
watchchannel.
To set the Dual Watch Mode

5. Squelch Settings
The‘Squelch’modeletsyouadjustthereceivingsensitivity.The
highertheSquelchlevelisset,thestrongerthesignalneedsto
beforittobereceivedbytheradio.
