bemanufacturerapprovedandAirConditioning,Heatingand
RefrigerationInstitute (AHRI) matched. NOTE: Installation of
unmatched systems is strongly discouraged.
Outdoorunitsare approvedfor operationabove 55°Fincooling
mode. Operationbelow 55°F requires the useofan approved
low ambient kit.
Operatingthe unit in a structure that is not complete(eitheras
partof newconstructionorrenovation) will void the warranty.

ThisairconditionerisapartoftheComfortNet™familyofprod-
ucts. It may be installed as part of a “legacy” system using a
standard 24 VAC thermostat. However, with the CTK0*
ComfortNetthermostat kit,thisair conditionermaybe installed
aspart of a digitally communicating system. The ComfortNet
systemprovidesautomaticairflowconfiguration,enhancedsetup
features,and enhanced diagnostics. It also reducesthenum-
ber of thermostat wires to a maximum of four and a minimum
oftwo.

Special consideration must be given to location of the con-
densingunit(s)in regardtostructures,obstructions,otherunits,
andany/all other factors that may interfere with air circulation.
Wherepossible, thetopof theunitshould becompletelyunob-
structed;however,if vertical conditions require placement be-
neath an obstruction there should be a minimum of 60
inches between the top of the unit and the obstruction(s).
Thespecified dimensionsmeetrequirements foraircirculation
only. Consult all appropriate regulatory codes prior to deter-
miningfinal clearances.
Anotherimportant consideration in selecting a location for the
unit(s) is the angle to obstructions. Either side adjacent the
valves can be placed toward the structure provided the side
awayfromthestructuremaintainsminimum serviceclearance.

that will not shift or settle. To reduce the possibility of sound

Useonlyrefrigerantgrade(dehydratedand sealed)coppertub-
ingto connect the condensing unit with the indoor evaporator.
Aftercuttingthe tubing, install plugs to keep refrigerant tubing
clean and dry prior to and during installation. Tubing should
alwaysbe cut squarekeepingends round and freefromburrs.
Cleanthe tubing to prevent contamination.
DoNOT let refrigerantlinescome in directcontactwith plumb-
ing,ductwork, floor joists, wall studs, floors, andwalls. When
runningrefrigerantlinesthrough afoundation orwall,openings
should allow for sound and vibration absorbing material to be
placed or installed between tubing and foundation. Any gap
betweenfoundationorwallandrefrigerantlinesshouldbe filled
witha pliable silicon-based caulk, RTV or a vibration damping
material.Avoid suspending refrigerant tubing from joists and
studs with rigid wire or straps that would come in contact with
thetubing. Use an insulated or suspensiontypehanger.Keep
both lines separate and always insulate the suction line.
These sizes are suitable for line lengths of 79 feet or less. If a
runofmorethanfiftyfeetisrequired,refertoRemoteCooling
ServiceManual, orTP-106 Long Line SetApplicationR-22,or
TP-107Long Line SetApplication R-410Aor contactyour dis-
tributorforassistance.
Insulationisnecessarytopreventcondensationfromforming
and dropping from the suction line. Armflex (or satisfactory
equivalent) with 3/8” min. wall thickness is recommended. In
severeconditions(hot, highhumidityareas)1/2”insulation may
be required. Insulation must be installed in a manner which
protectstubing from damage and contamination.
Where possible, drain as much residual compressor oil from
existing systems, lines, and traps; pay close attention to low
areas where oil may collect. NOTE: If changing refrigerant
types, ensure the indoor coil and metering device is compat-
ible with the type of refrigerant being used; otherwise, the in-
door coil must be replaced.

B URYING R EFRIGERANT L INES
Ifburyingrefrigerantlinescannotbeavoided,usethefollowing
checklist.
1. Insulate liquid and suction lines separately.
2. Encloseall undergroundportionsof therefrigerantlines
inwaterproof material(conduitor pipe)sealing the ends
wheretubingenters/exitsthe enclosure.
3. Ifthe lines must pass under or through a concrete slab,
ensurelines are adequately protected and sealed.
R EFRIGERANT L INE C ONNECTIONS
IMPORTANT
To avoid overheating the service valve, TXV valve,
or filter drier while brazing, wrap the component
with a wet rag, or use a thermal heat trap compound.
Besure to follow the manufacturer’sinstruction when
using the heat trap compound. Note: Remove
Schrader valves from service valves before brazing
tubes to the valves. Use a brazing alloy of 2%
minimum silver content. Do not use flux.

Torch heat required to braze tubes of various sizes
is proportional to the size of the tube. Tubes of
smaller size require less heat to bring the tube to
brazing temperature before adding brazing alloy.
Applying too much heat to any tube can melt the
tube. Service personnel must use the appropriate
heatlevel for the size of the tube being brazed. NOTE:
The use of a heat shield when brazing is
recommended to avoid burning the serial plate or
the finish on the unit.
1. The ends of the refrigerant lines must be cut square,
deburred,cleaned, and be round andfreefrom nicks or
dents. Any other condition increases the chance of a
refrigerantleak.
2. “Sweep” the refrigerant line with nitrogen or inert gas
duringbrazing to prevent theformationofcopper-oxide
inside the refrigerant lines. The POE oils used in R-
410A applications will clean any copper-oxide present
from the inside of the refrigerant lines and spread it
throughout the system. This may cause a blockage or
failureof the meteringdevice.
3. Afterbrazing, quenchthejoints withwateror awetcloth
topreventoverheating ofthe servicevalve.
4. Ensure the filter drier paint finish is intact after brazing.
If the paint of the steel filter drier has been burned or
chipped,repaint ortreatwith arustpreventative. This is
especially important on suction line filter driers which
are continually wet when the unit is operating.
NOTE: Becareful not to kink or dent refrigerant lines. Kinked
or dented lines will cause poor performance or compressor
damage.
Do NOT make final refrigerant line connection until plugs
are removed from refrigerant tubing.
NOTE: Before brazing, verify indoor piston size by checking
the piston kit chart packaged with indoor unit.
L EAK T ESTING (N ITROGEN OR N ITROGEN -T RACED )
T O  AVOID  THE  RISK  OF  FIRE  OR  EXPLOSION , NEVER  USE  OXYGEN , HIGH 
PRESSURE  AIR  OR  FLAMMABLE  GASES  FOR  LEAK  TESTING  OF  A 
REFRIGERATION  SYSTEM .
WARNING

CYLINDER  MUST  INCLUDE  A  PRESSURE  REGULATOR  AND  A  PRESSURE 

NO  MORE  THAN 150 PSIG .
WARNING
Pressure test the system using dry nitrogen and soapy water
to locate leaks. If you wish to use a leak detector, charge the
system to 10 psi using the appropriate refrigerant then use
nitrogentofinishcharging thesystem toworkingpressure then
apply the detector to suspect areas. If leaks are found, repair
them. After repair, repeat the pressure test. If no leaks exist,
proceedto system evacuation.
S YSTEM E VACUATION
Condensingunitliquidandsuctionvalves areclosed tocontain
the charge within the unit. The unit is shipped with the valve
stems closed and caps installed. Do not open valves until
the system is evacuated.
REFRIGERANTUNDERPRESSURE!
F AILURE  TO  FOLLOW  PROPER  PROCEDURES  MAY  CAUSE  PROPERTY 

P ROLONGED  OPERATION  AT  SUCTION  PRESSURES  LESS  THAN 20 PSIG 
FOR  MORE  THAN 5 SECONDS  WILL  RESULT  IN  OVERHEATING  OF  THE 
SCROLLS  AND  PERMANENT  DAMAGE  TO  THE  SCROLL  TIPS , DRIVE 
BEARINGS  AND  INTERNAL  SEAL .
CAUTION
1. Connect the vacuum pump with 250 micron capability
tothe servicevalves.
2. Evacuate the system to 250 microns or less using
suction and liquid service valves. Using both valves is
necessary as some compressors create a mechanical
seal separating the sides of the system.
3. Close pump valve and hold vacuum for 10 minutes.
Typicallypressurewillriseduringthis period.
• Ifthepressure risesto1000micronsor lessandremains
steady the system is considered leak-free; proceed to
startup.
• If pressure rises above 1000 microns but holds steady
below2000 microns, moisture and/ornoncondensibles
may be present or the system may have a small leak.
Returntostep2:Ifthesame resultis encounteredcheck
forleaksaspreviouslyindicatedandrepairasnecessary
thenrepeatevacuation.
• Ifpressure rises above 2000microns,a leak is present.
Check for leaks as previously indicated and repair as
necessarythen repeat evacuation.

NOTICE
The condensing unit rating plate lists pertinent electrical data
necessaryfor properelectricalservice andovercurrentprotec-
tion. Wires should be sized to limit voltage drop to 2% (max.)
from the main breaker or fuse panel to the condensing unit.
Consult the NEC, CEC, and all local codes to determine the
correctwire gauge and length.
Localcodes oftenrequirea disconnectswitchlocated nearthe
unit; do not install the switch on the unit. Refer to the installa-
tioninstructionssuppliedwith theindoor furnace/airhandler for
specificwiringconnectionsand indoorunit configuration. Like-
wise, consult the instructions packaged with the thermostat
formounting and locationinformation.
O VERCURRENT P ROTECTION
Thefollowing overcurrent protection devices areapprovedfor

These devices have sufficient time delay to permit the motor-
compressor to start and accelerate its load.

portand terminate in accordance with the wiring diagram pro-
videdinside the control panelcover.
L OW V OLTAGE C ONNECTIONS
Condensingunit control wiring requiresanominal24 VAC (+/-
6 VAC), 60 Hz, minimum 25 VAservice from either the indoor
oroutdoortransformerpackagedwiththeoptionalCTK0*com-
municatingthermostat kit. Lowvoltage wiring forthe condens-
ing units depends on the thermostat used. The unit is de-
signedto work as partof a fully communicatingHVAC system
utilizingtheComfortNet™,CTK0*thermostat,ComfortNetcom-
patible indoor unit, and up to four wires. The unit also has
legacy24 VACinputstosupport non-communicatingsystems.
Routecontrol wiresthroughthe low voltageportand terminate
inaccordance withthewiring diagramprovidedinside thecon-
trolpanelcover.

at .6 ounces per foot of liquid line.
NOTE: Charge should always be checked using superheat
whenusinga pistonand subcoolingwhen usingTXVequipped
indoorcoilto verify proper charge.
Openthesuctionservicevalvefirst! Ifthe liquidservice valveis
opened first, oil from the compressor may be drawn into the
indoorcoilTXV, restrictingrefrigerantflow andaffectingopera-
tion of the system.
Whenopeningvalves withretainers, openeach valveonly until
the top of the stem is 1/8” from the retainer. To avoid loss of
refrigerant,DONOTapplypressuretotheretainer.Whenopen-
ingvalves without a retainer removeservicevalvecap and in-
sert a hex wrench into the valve stem and back out the stem
by turning the hex wrench counterclockwise. Open the valve
until it contacts the rolled lip of the valve body.
NOTE: Theseare notback-seating valves.Itis notnecessary
to force the stem tightly against the rolled lip.
Afterthe refrigerant chargehasbled into thesystem,open the
liquid service valve. The service valve cap is the secondary
seal for the valves and must be properly tightened to prevent
leaks.Makesurecapiscleanandapplyrefrigerantoiltothreads
and sealing surface on inside of cap. Tighten cap finger-tight
andthen tightenadditional1/6 of aturn(1 wrench flat)toprop-
erly seat the sealing surfaces.

Runthe remoteon lowstagecooling for10minutes untilrefrig-
erantpressuresstabilize.Usethefollowingguidelinesandmeth-
ods to check unit operation and ensure that the refrigerant
charge is within limits. Charge the unit on low stage.
1. Purge gauge lines. Connect service gauge manifold to
base-valveserviceports.
2. Temporarily install a thermometer on the liquid line at
theliquidlineservicevalveand4-6"fromthecompressor
on the suction line. Ensure the thermometer makes
adequate contact and is insulated for best possible
readings.Use liquid line temperaturetodeterminesub-
coolingand vaportemperatureto determine superheat.
3. Check subcooling and superheat. Systems with TXV
application should have a subcooling of 5 to 7ºF and
superheat of 7 to 9 ºF.
a. Ifsubcooling andsuperheatarelow, adjustTXVto7
to 9 ºF superheat, then check subcooling.
NOTE: To adjust superheat, turn the valve stem
clockwisetoincreaseandcounter clockwise to de-
crease.
b. Ifsubcoolingislowandsuperheatishigh,addcharge
to raise subcooling to 5 to 7 ºF then check super-
heat.
c. If subcooling and superheat are high, adjust TXV
valveto 7 to9ºF superheat, thenchecksubcooling.
d. If subcooling is high and superheat is low, adjust

to lower the subcooling to 5 to 7 ºF.

C OMFORT N ET ™ S YSTEM
OVERVIEW
The ComfortNet system (or CT system) is a system that in-
cludesa ComfortNet compatible air handler/furnace/modular
blowerand air conditioner or heatpumpwitha CTK0*AA ther-
mostat. Any other system configurations are considered in-
valid ComfortNet systems and must be connected as a tradi-
tion (or legacy) system. The table below compares the valid
CT systems.

A ComfortNet heating/air conditioning system differs from a
legacy/traditional system in the manner in which the indoor
unit,outdoorunitandthermostatinteract with one another. In
a traditional system, the thermostat sends commands to the
indoor and outdoor units via analog 24 VAC signals. It is a
one-way communication path in that the indoor and outdoor
units typically do not return information to the thermostat.
On the other hand, the indoor unit, outdoor unit, and thermo-
statcomprisingaComfortNetsystem“communicate”digitally
with one another. It is now a two-way communications path.
The thermostat still sends commands to the indoor and out-
door units. However, the thermostat may also request and
receiveinformationfromboththeindoorandoutdoorunits. This
information may be displayed on the CT thermostat. The in-
door and outdoor units also interact with one another. The
outdoor unit may send commands to or request information
from the indoor unit. This two-way digital communications
betweenthe thermostat andsubsystems(indoor/outdoor unit)
and between subsystems is the key to unlocking the benefits
andfeaturesof the ComfortNet system.
Two-way digital communications is accomplished using only
two wires. The thermostat and subsystem controls are pow-
ered with 24 VAC Thus, a maximum of 4 wires between the
equipmentandthermostat is all that is required to operate the
system.
AIRFLOWCONSIDERATIONS
Airflowdemands are managed differently in afully communi-
cating system than they are in a legacy wired system. The
system operating mode (as determined by the thermostat)
determineswhichunit calculates the system airflow demand.
Iftheindoor unit is responsible for determining the airflow de-
mand,it calculatesthe demandandsends itto theECMmotor.
Ifthe outdoor unit or thermostat is responsiblefordetermining
the demand, it calculates the demand and transmits the de-
mand along with a fan request to the indoor unit. The indoor
unitthensends the demand to the ECM motor. Thefollowing
table lists the various ComfortNet™ systems, the operating
mode,andairflow demand source.

conditioner will calculate the system’s low stage cooling air-

cooling airflow demand to the ECM motor. The ECM motor
then delivers the low stage cooling airflow. The table below

DIAGNOSTICS
Accessingtheair conditioner/heatpumpdiagnosticsmenupro-
vides ready access to the last six faults detected by the air
conditioner/heatpump. Faults are stored most recent to least
recent. Anyconsecutively repeated faultisstored a maximum
of three times. Example: The power supply to the air condi-
tioner/heatpump is continuously below 187 VAC. Thecontrol
will only store this fault the first three consecutive times the
fault occurs. Navigate to the diagnostics menu as described
above in Accessing and Navigating the Advanced Features
Menus.
NOTE:Itishighlyrecommendedthatthefaulthistorybecleared

NETWORKTROUBLESHOOTING
Communicationsis achievedbytaking the differencebetween
a positive dc signal and a negative dc signal. The positive dc
signalistermed “data 1” or “1”. Data 1 is positive with respect
toground(orcommon). The negativedc signalis termed“data
2” or “2”. Data 2 is negative with respect to ground (or com-
mon).
Data1 shouldbeapproximately 2.8 voltsdc. Data 2 shouldbe
approximately 2.2 volts dc. The voltage difference between
data 1 and data 2 should be approximately 0.6 volts dc.
