Electrical Information
Make sure that thevoltage of yourelectricity supply is the same asthat
indicatedon theratingplateofthepowersupply unitsuppliedwithyour
Portable DAB/FM Radio. It requiresa230V AC, 50Hz mains supply. Do
notuseany othersupply.
The mainsleadsupplied maybefittedwithanon-rewireable plug.If you
needtochangethe fusein anon-rewireable plug, the fusecover must
be refitted.Ifthe fuse coveris lost ordamaged, theplugmust not be
useduntil areplacementis obtained.
If the plughastobechangedbecauseit is notsuitable foryoursocket,
orbecomes damaged, it should beremoved and anappropriateplug
fittedfollowingthewiringdiagrambelow. Theplugremovedmust be
disposedofsafely, asinsertionintoamainssocketcouldbean
electrical hazard.
Important
As thecoloursof thewires in themainslead of this appliance maynot
correspondwiththecoloured markingsidentifyingtheterminals in your
plug,proceedas follows:
•Thebluewiremustbe
connected tothe terminal
markedwiththe letterNor
coloured black.
•Thebrown wiremust be

What is DAB?
DAB wasdeveloped inEuropeby aconsortiumof broadcastersand
manufacturers.
DAB uses digital compressiontechniques totransformthesource
material, i.e. music and speech,into digitalcodebeforeit is transmitted.
The code consists of electronic ‘onesandzeros’ calledbinarydigits or
bits. Thebinary code is thenmultiplexedorgroupedtogethertocreate
asuperiorsignal, when comparedwiththeolderanalogue system, with
thefollowing key benefits:
•Interferencefreereception.
Analogue systems sufferfroman effect called‘multipath distortion’.
Thisiscausedbecausewavesdonotbehavein anorderlyfashion,
butbounceandreflect offbuildingsetc. DAB seesthisasan
advantageand usesthe direct andreflected signals to actually
reinforcetheendresult.
•Noneedto re-tune.
AsingleDAB frequency canbeusedto coverthe wholeof theUK,
so solving many of theproblems experiencedwith the earlier
analogue system. DAB scan automatically tune-in all ofthe
availablestations inyourarea.

Positioning your DAB Radio
Placeyour PortableDAB/FM Radioonaflat, stablesurface that is not
subject tovibrations.
Avoid the following locations:
•Whereit is exposed to direct sunlight.
•Whereit is close to heatradiating sources.
•Wherethehumidity is high and ventilationis poor.
•Where it isdusty.
Adjusting the Aerial
The aerialshouldbeextended to ensuregoodreception inboth DAB
and FMradiomodes.It maybenecessarytoalterthepositionofthe
Portable DAB/FMRadioand/oraerial toachieve thebest signal.
Using Headphones
You will require headphones fitted witha3.5mm diameter stereo plug
and animpedanceof 8-32ohms. TheHeadphonesocketis locatedon
the side of this unit (page 7).
Headphonesarenotsupplied withthisPortableDAB/FM Radio.

Battery Operation
Before installing batteries (not included), ensure that the Portable DAB/
FMRadiois disconnectedfromthemainssupply.
Removethe battery compartmentcover on thebackofthe Radioby
carefullypushingthetwolugsdown.Thebatterycovercanthen belifted
away.
Fit6x1.5v LR14 Batteries (C-size or equivalent, not included),
referringtothepolaritymarkings inside thebattery compartment.
Nevermix old andnewbatteries.
Finally, replacethecover.
Forbatteryoperation, switchoff the mainssupplyand removethecable
from the power socket. Batteryoperation will be selected automatically.
Werecommendtheuse of EverReady
Energizerbatteries.
If youarenotgoing tousethePortable DAB/FM Radioforanextended
period,pleaseremovethebatteriestoavoiddamage.
Mains Operation
YourPortable DAB/FM Radiorequires amains supply of 230VAC ~50
Hz. Please ensure thatyour mainssupply is compatible before use.
Insert themainscableinto the powersocket atthe rear of the Radio,
then plugin andswitch on thesupply.
CAUTION!DANGEROF EXPLOSION IF BATTERIES ARE
INCORRECTLY REPLACED. REPLACEONLYWITH THE SAME
OREQUIVALENTTYPE.

Using your DAB Radio
Switching On for the first time
Whenyouswitch yourPortableDAB/FM Radioonfor thefirsttime,DAB
mode is selected automatically. The DISPLAYwill illuminate and
‘Welcome todigital radio’ will be displayed.
The following screen will be displayed. Abar graph indicates the
progress of thesearch-thenumberof stationsfoundincreases as the
scanprogresses.
When the scan iscomplete, the Portable DAB/FMRadiowill then select
thefirstavailable station -stationsarelistedin numerical then
alphabetic order.
The station list is retainedinmemory sothenext timeyouswitchthe
Portable DAB/FMRadioon,thestationsearchdoesnottake place.
If therearenostations found,checkthatadequateDAB coverageexists
inyour area.
It is possibletoperform amanual scanforstations, seepage17.
Changing DAB Stations
1Press the SCROLL UP orSCROLL DOWN buttontoscroll up and
down through the availablestations. The station nameswill appear
onthesecondlineoftheDISPLAY.
2WhenthedesiredstationisdisplayedpressSELECT.ThePortable
DAB/FM Radio will immediatelytune to that station.
Adjusting theVolume
1Toincrease thevolume by pressing the VOLUME +button.
2Todecreasethe volume by pressing the VOLUME –button.

Scanning for DAB Stations
DuetothenatureofDAB radio,additional stationsand services
regularlybecomeavailable.If youwishtoseeiftherehavebeenany
newDAB stations introducedinyourareayoucaninitiate asearch.
Press theSCANbutton toactivatealocal search for stations. This will
take approximately 10seconds.If youareusingyour Portable DAB/FM
RadiooutsideoftheUK then awidersearch canbeinitiatedby pressing
and holdingdowntheSCANbuttonfor approximatelytwo seconds. In
thiscaseafull scan isperformed whichwill take approximately 20
seconds.
Station Display Symbols
Youmay seesomesymbols displayed alongsidethe stationnames.
These aredefinedasfollows:
Thisindicates thatthestationisoneof yourtenfavouritestations
andcanbeusedwhenselectingthestationorder, seepage16.
Thisis displayedbeforethestationname if thestationis not
availableornotactive.
Chevrons displayedafter thestationname indicate that this is a
primarystationwithsecondaryservices.
Chevrons displayedbeforethestationnameindicate thatthis is
asecondarystation.
Storing DAB Presets
Note:Eachpresetbuttonholdstwopresets. Forexample,the 1/6preset
button,on the PortableDAB/FMRadio,holds preset positions oneand
six.
Youcanpreset up to 10DAB stationsforeasy access as follows:
1Tune to thestationyouwish to preset(see ‘ChangingDAB Stations’
onpage11).
2Press andholdoneofthePRESET buttons(e.g.1/6),locatedon the
topofthe PortableDAB/FMRadio. ‘Preset #saved’will appear on
thesecondlineofthe DISPLAY,where#is the numberofthe preset
position.
3Tosavetopresetpositions6-10,hold down theSHIFTbuttonthen
press andholdthedesiredPRESETbutton.If youhave already
saved aDAB station in thatpresetlocation,itwill be over-written with
thenewstation.

Selecting a Preset Station
Toselect presets 1-5,press therelevantPRESETbutton.
Toselectpresets 6-10,hold downtheSHIFTbuttonandthen press the
relevant PRESET button.
If youhavenotalreadystoredaDAB stationin oneof thepresets,
‘Empty preset’ willbedisplayed. The DISPLAYwill revert to the
previously selectedstationafterafew seconds.
Reset
Youcandeleteall ofthepresetstationsand returnthePortable DAB/
FM Radio to itsfactory settings asfollows:
1Press andholdtheMENUbutton.
2TheDISPLAYwill show ‘Press SELECTtoconfirm delete...’
3Press the SELECTbutton
TheDISPLAYwill show ‘Welcome to DigitalRadio’ before
performinganewscanforstations.
The Portable DAB/FMRadio will be returned to itsfactory condition.
If youdo notwish toreset the PortableDAB/FM Radio, wait afew
seconds withoutpressingany buttonsandthePortableDAB/FM Radio
will revert to itsprevious operating condition.

Changing the DAB Station Information
It is possibleto changetheinformation thatis displayedonthesecond
lineof theDISPLAYwhen listeningtoaDAB station.Notethatthis
information is not available whenlisteningto conventionalFM
stations.Thereareseventypes ofinformationavailable as listedbelow
with examples totheright. Tochangetheinformationdisplayedpress
the DISPLAYbuttonrepeatedly.
•DynamicLabelSegment(DLS)
Thisis scrolling textinformation supplied by
theDAB station. It maycomprise information
onmusic titles or details of theprogramme
andis providedbythe broadcaster.
•ProgramType (PTY)
This is adescriptionof thetypeof
programmeprovidedby theDAB stationand
is providedbythebroadcaster.
•MultiplexName
Thiswill show the multiplexthat is
broadcasting theprogrammeyouare
listening to.
•Time andDate
Thisdisplaysthe time and date and is
provided by thebroadcaster, so will be
accurate.
•Channel and Frequency
Thisdisplaysthechannel numberandthe
transmission frequency.
•Audio Information
This shows the digitalbit-rateandtheaudio
mode.
•SignalErrorRate
If thetransmission signal contains errorsthesystemcanapply
correction.Theamountof signal correctioncanbedisplayedasa
numerical value between 0and 99.Asthe value increases,youwill
hearthesignaldegrade. Toimprovereception, tryadjustingthe
positionof theantenna. Please note a signal error rate of 30 or
more will make the station un-listenable.

Using the MENU Control
The MENU function allows you tochange someofthe system options
onyourPortableDAB/FM Radio.Theseoptionsarearrangedin a menu
structureasshown below.

Pressing theMENUbutton will enter the menucontrol. The optionsare
described below.
Station Order
This functionenables youtodefine howthestations arearranged when
scrolling the stationslist.
1.Press the MENUbutton toaccessthemenucontrol.
2.Presseitherthe SCROLL UPorSCROLL DOWNbuttonsuntil
‘Station order’isdisplayed.
3.Press the SELECTbutton to access ‘Station order’.
4.Use eithertheSCROLL UPorSCROLL DOWNtodisplay the
desiredoption.
Therearefouroptionsavailableasdescribedbelow.
•FavouriteStation (Favstation)
TheDAB tunermonitorsthestations that youlistento andwillbuild
alist ofthetenmostlistenedtostations.Whenthis option is
selectedthestationlist is re-orderedsothatthesestationsappear
at the top of the list. When youscroll through the listyouwill see
thatyourten favouritestations will have aheart shaped symbol.
•Alphanumeric
This is thedefault setting.Thestations arearrangedin numerical
thenalphabeticalorder.
•ActiveStation
Thisoption will re-orderthe list withthosestations thatcanbe
receivedin yourareaat thetopof thelist andthose thatcannotat
the bottom ofthe list.
•PruneStations
Thisoption will remove from the listanystationsthathaveno
servicein yourarea (i.e.: thestationsthatwereprecededby ‘?’).
5.PressSELECTtoconfirm.

ManualTune
It is possible tomanually tunetoaspecific channel/frequency andadd
this to thestation list.
This function canbeusedtoobtainthe optimumreceptionforaspecific
channel/frequency, takinginto accounttheposition of the aerial.
1.Press the MENUbutton toaccessthemenucontrol.
2.Presseitherthe SCROLL UPorSCROLL DOWNbuttonsuntil
‘Manualtune’is displayed.
3.Press the SELECTbutton to access ‘Manual tune’.
4.Use eithertheSCROLL UPorSCROLL DOWNbuttonsto select
thedesiredchannel/frequency.
5.PressSELECT.
Arectangle will be displayedon firstline oftheDISPLAY.Theposition
ofthis rectangle indicates theminimum signalstrength to achieve
satisfactory reception.
6.Adjust the positionof theantenna to obtain the optimum signal
strength.
7.Press the SELECTtoconfirm.

Dynamic RangeControl
DRC adds or removes adegree of compression to compensate for the
differencesin thedynamicrangebetweenradiostations. Forexample,
astationbroadcastingpopular music mayhaveahighlevel of
compressionappliedsincetheemphasis is on aconstant high listening
level, whereas astation broadcastingclassical music will havelittle or
nocompressionasthelistenerrequiresall ofthehighsandlows inthe
music to definethedetail.
Therearethree levels of compression:
•DRC0 Nocompressionapplied.
•DRC1 Maximumcompression applied(this is thedefault).
•DRC1/2Medium compression applied.
The best way to determinewhich of these settings suitsyou bestis to
experimentwiththem ona variety ofsourcematerial.
1.Press the MENUbutton toaccessthemenucontrol.
2.Presseitherthe SCROLL UPorSCROLL DOWNbuttonsuntil
‘DRCvalue’ isdisplayed.
3.Press the SELECTbutton to access ‘DRC value’.
The current DRC level will be displayedon line 1of the DISPLAY.
4.Press the SCROLL UP buttonto select between the three DRC
values. Theavailable options appearonline2of theDISPLAY.
WhentherequiredDRC valueis displayedpress SELECTto
confirm.
•Youshould be able to hear thedifferencein compression
immediately.
Software Version
This is onlyprovidedasan engineersreferencein theunlikelyeventthat
servicingshould everbenecessary.
1.Press the MENUbutton toaccessthemenucontrol.
2.Press eithertheSCROLL UPorSCROLL DOWNbuttonsuntil ‘Sw
version’is displayed.
•The version numberwill appear on line 1.

Using theFM Radio
If the Portable DAB/FM Radio is in DAB mode, pressthe DAB/FM
buttonto select FMmode.Youmay hearbackgroundnoise as no
stationhasbeentunedin.The DISPLAYwilllook something likethis:
Automatic Tuning
1.Press and releasethe SCANbuttontoautomatically searchforthe
next availablestation.
‘Searching...’will appearon the DISPLAYasthe Radioscansup
thefrequencies (seebelow).
2.Ifthereceptionis poor,brieflypress the SCROLL UPorSCROLL
DOWNbutton tofinetunethestation.
•Ifthereceptiondoes notimprove, tryalteringthepositionofthe
aerial.
•Ifthe reception is still poor,scan again to determine whether a
strongersignalexists forthe desiredfrequency.
3.Whenyouhavetunedintothedesired frequency/station,youcan
saveit in oneofthetenpresetlocations,asdescribedonpage20.
NOTE: If the Radio isswitched offin FM mode it will always
resumein DAB mode,in lastselected station, when
switchedback on.
NOTE: When you scanthroughconventional FM
frequencies, the stations aredetected baseduponthe
strength ofthe signal.Automatic FM scansmay detect very
noisyordistorted stations-itmay be necessarytore-scan,
adjust theaerial/radiopositionorfine-tunethesignalto
achieve the best results.

Manual Tuning
1.Press andholdtheSCROLL DOWN orSCROLL UP buttonto
manuallyscan upordown throughthefrequency band.
Whenthedesiredfrequency appearsonthe DISPLAYreleasethe
SCROLL DOWNorSCROLL UP button.
2.Ifthereceptionis poor,brieflypress eitherthe SCROLL UPor
SCROLL DOWNbuttontofinetunethestation.
•Ifthereceptiondoes notimprove, tryalteringthepositionofthe
aerial.
•Ifthe reception is still poor,scan again to determine whether a
strongersignalexists forthe desiredfrequency.
3.Whenyouhavetunedintothedesired frequency/station,youcan
saveit in oneofthetenpresetlocations,seebelow.
StoringFM Presets
Youcanpreset up to 10FMstationsforeasy access as follows:
1.Tunetothestation youwishtopreset,as describedontheprevious
page.
2Press andholdone ofthePRESET buttons(1-5)until theDISPLAY
shows:
Inthis case,‘Preset1saved’ is displayedtoindicatethatthe station
hasbeen saved into first presetposition.
•Tosave presets6-10,holddown the SHIFTbuttonthenpress and
holdthe desiredPRESET button.
•Ifyouhavealreadysavedan FMstationin thatpresetlocation,it
will be over-written with the new station.
NOTE: WhenyoustoreDAB stations,these donot over-
writeyourFM presets.
