Preparing for installation
H3C S5120-SI Switch Series includes the following models:
•S5120-9P-SI
•S5120-20P-SI

Safety recommendations
To avoid any equipment damage or bodily injury, read the following safety recommendations before
installation. Note that the recommendations do not cover every possible hazardous condition.
•Before cleaning the switch, remove the power cords from the switch. Do not clean the switch
with wet cloth or liquid.
•Do not place the switch near water or in a damp environment. Prevent water or moisture from
entering the chassis.
•Do not place the switch on an unstable case or desk. The switch might be damaged severely in
case of a fall.
•Ensure good ventilation of the equipment room and keep the air inlet and outlet vents of the
switch free of obstruction.
•Make sure the power source voltage is in the required range.
•To avoid electrical shocks, do not open the chassis when the switch is operating or when the
switch is just powered off.
Examining the installation site
The switch must be used indoors. You can mount the switch in a rack or on a workbench, but make
sure:
•Adequate clearance is reserved at the air inlet and outlet vents for ventilation.
•The rack or workbench has a good ventilation system.
•The rack is sturdy enough to support the switch and its accessories.
•The rack or workbench is reliably grounded.
To ensure correct operation and long service life of your switch, install it in an environment that meets
the requirements described in the following subsections.
Temperature/humidity
Maintain temperature and humidity in the equipment room in the acceptable range:
•Lasting high relative humidity can cause poor insulation, electricity leakage, mechanical
property change of materials, and metal corrosion.

•Lasting low relative humidity can cause washer contraction and ESD and cause problems
including loose mounting screws and circuit failure.
•High temperature can accelerate the aging of insulation materials and significantly lower the
reliability and lifespan of the switch.
For the temperature and humidity requirements of different models, see Table 7 and Table 8.
Cleanliness
Dust buildup on the chassis might result in electrostatic adsorption, which causes poor contact of
metal components and contact points, especially when indoor relative humidity is low. In the worst
case, electrostatic adsorption can cause communication failure.

The equipment room must also meet strict limits on salts, acids, and sulfides to eliminate corrosion
and premature aging of components, as shown in Tabl e 2.

All electromagnetic interference (EMI) sources, from outside or inside of the switch and application
system, adversely affect the switch in the following ways:
•A conduction pattern of capacitance coupling.
•Inductance coupling.
•Electromagnetic wave radiation.
•Common impedance (including the grounding system) coupling.
To prevent EMI, perform the following tasks:
•If AC power is used, use a single-phase three-wire power receptacle with protection earth (PE)
to filter interference from the power grid.
•Keep the switch far away from radio transmitting stations, radar stations, and high-frequency
devices.
•Use electromagnetic shielding, for example, shielded interface cables, when necessary.

Laser safety
WARNING!
Do not stare into any fiber port when the switch has power. The laser light emitted from the optical
fiber might hurt your eyes.
The switch is a Class 1 laser device.
Installation tools
No installation tools are provided with the switch. Prepare the following tools yourself:
•Flat-blade screwdriver
•Phillips screwdriver
•ESD wrist strap

Installing the switch
CAUTION:
Keep the tamper-proof seal on a mounting screw on the chassis cover intact, and if you want to open
the chassis, contact H3C for permission. Otherwise, H3C shall not be liable for any consequence.

Rack-mounting the switch
The switch is shipped with a pair of mounting brackets to secure and support the switch. Figure 2
shows the procedure for installing the switch in a 19-inch rack.

Attaching the mounting brackets to the switch
Select a mounting position for the mounting brackets as required. For the mounting positions
available for the mounting brackets, see Table 3.
The mounting bracket installation holes in the following figures are for illustration only.
To attach mounting brackets to the switch:

1. Align the mounting holes in a bracket with the holes in a side of the chassis.
2. Fasten the screws to secure the mounting bracket to the chassis.
3. Follow the same steps to attach the other mounting bracket to the other side of the chassis.

Mounting the switch in a rack
1. Wear an ESD wrist strap and make sure the rack is stable and is reliably grounded.
2. Use a mounting bracket to mark the cage nut installation positions on the front rack posts.
3. Install cage nuts at the marked positions.
4. Verify that the mounting brackets have been attached to the switch. For more information, see
"Attaching the mounting brackets to the switch."
5. One person supports the bottom of the switch and gently moves the switch to the planned
installation position in the rack.
6. Another person uses anti-rust screws (user-supplied) to attach the mounting brackets to the
front rack post, as shown in Figure 13 or Figure 14.

NOTE:
If a rack shelf is available, you can use the rack shelf and mounting brackets to mount the switch in
the rack. Put the switch on the rack shelf and slide the switch to a position so that you can attach the
mounting brackets securely to the front rack posts.
Workbench-mounting the switch
CAUTION:
•Make sure the workbench is clean, stable, and is reliably grounded.
•Ensure a minimum clearance of 10 cm (3.94 in) around the switch.
•Do not place heavy objects on the switch.
If a 19-inch rack is not available, you can install the switch on a workbench.
To mount the switch on a workbench:
1. Place the switch with bottom up carefully, and clean the round holes in the chassis bottom with
dry cloth.
2. Attach the rubber feet to the four round holes in the chassis bottom.
3. Place the switch with upside up on the workbench.
Wall-mounting the switch
The S5120-9P-SI, S5120-9P-PWR-SI, and S5120-9P-HPWR-SI switches support wall mounting.
You can use wall anchors to mount the switch on a concrete or wood wall.
Wall anchor
No wall anchors are provided with the switch. Prepare them yourself.
A wall anchor contains an expansion anchor and a screw. Use wall anchors with a diameter less than
4 mm (0.16 in) for wall-mounting the switch.

Installation procedure
To wall-mount the switch:
1. As shown in Figure 16, drill two holes in the wall at a distance of X mm.

Determine the diameter and depth for the hole based on the sizes of the expansion anchor and
screw. Make sure only the edge of the expansion anchor remains outside of the wall and the
screw can be securely fastened to the wall.
2. Insert the expansion anchor into the wall and keep only the edges outside the wall, as shown
in Figure 17.
3. Fasten the screw into the expansion anchor. Make sure the inside of screw head is a minimum
of 1.5 mm (0.06 in) away from the edge of the wall anchor so that the switch can hang on the
screw securely.

NOTE:
When you fasten the screw into the expansion anchor, the front end of the anchor expands to
press against the hole so that the screw can be secured to the wall.
4. Align the two installation holes in the bottom of the switch with these two screws and hang the
switch on the screws, as shown in Figure 18.
Make sure the Ethernet ports of the switch face downwards and the two sides with ventilation
holes are vertical to the ground.

Magnet-mounting the switch
The S5120-9P-SI, S5120-9P-PWR-SI, and S5120-9P-HPWR-SI switches support magnet mounting.
You can use magnet-mount kits to attach the switch to a steel desktop or wall.
Magnet-mount kit
A magnet-mount kit includes a permanent magnet and a M3*6 countersunk head screw, as shown
in Figure 19. Four magnet-mount kits are required for magnet-mounting the switch.
