differences may exist between this manual and the instructions
supplied with the instrument.

2.1.2. Precautionary labels
Read carefully all labels and tags attached to the instrument.
2.2. Description
The sensION™+MM340 is an instrument with 2 measure-
ment channels to measure pH, mV or concentration with a selec-
tive electrode.
2.3. Instrument composition
Accessories:
- Buffer solutions, 135 ml flasks.
- Magnetic stirrer.
- Calibration flasks, with magnetic bar inside.
- Electrolyte for the electrode, KCl 3M, 50 ml flask.
- Plug-in power supply.
- Electrode’s stick and support.

3. Installation
DANGER
Only qualified personnel, following the local security regulations, should conduct the tasks described in this section of the
manual.
3.1. Assemblage
1. Unpack the instrument.
Note: Stirrer replacement
Before replacing the stirrer, disconnet it from the rear panel and
release the cable from the bottom of the instrument.
2. Verify that the shift is in
the same position than
in the picture.
3. Drive the stick into the
hole.
4. Turn the shift in a
counterclockwise until
the stick is well fixed.
Place the o-ring at
135-140 mm from the
base in order to avoid
the shock of the sensor
against the bottom of
the glass.
5. Place the electrode’s
support on the stick by
softly pressing the
button.

Insert the electrode’s
cable through the
groove.

4.1. Description
Keys
Switch on / Switch off.
Confirms the option displayed. When there is more
than one option, accepts the one marked in negative.
Move backwards in the menus.
Selection between the different options displayed.
Selection of numeric values.
Change between Channel 1 and Channel 2.
Move forwards / backwards a digit when entering a
numeric value.
Show the next display in those menus that have more
than one.

4.2. Start-up
Connect to the rear panel of the instrument:
- the electrode to the corresponding channel.
- the temperature probe (A.T.C.) integrated in the pH elec-
trode or as a separated sensor
- the magnetic stirrer supplied with the instrument to ST 1.
- the plug-in power supply

If you have a 2nd. stirrer it must be connected to Channel 2
(ST2). Afterwords it must be configured, see System page 17.
4.3. Factory configuration
The sensION™+MM340 is an instrument with 2 measurement
channels to measure pH, mV or concentration with a selective
electrode. The factory configuration is as follows:
Channel 1
Units: pH
Resolution 0.01 pH.
Measurements: By stability with standard criterion.
In continuous pressing twice the key .
Calibration in 1, 2 or 3 points, with technical buffers.
Calibration frequency, every 24 hours.
Channel 2
Units: ISE
Measurements: By stability with standard criterion.
In continuous pressing twice the key .
Curve number 1.
Five points calibration, units mol/l.
Standards: 0.00001, 0.0001, 0.001, 0.01, 0.1.
Common to Channel 1 and 2
Automatic sample coding.
Data sending, report type, etc. in accordance with the start up
configuration.
Re-programming
To perform any modification in the default programming, for
example measuring units of the channels, different measuring
modes, calibration with other type of buffers, etc. see corre-
sponding chapters.
Stirrers
In one standard instrument, Channels 1 and 2 will work with
stirrer number 1 (ST1).
If you have a 2nd stirrer it must be connected to Channel 2 (ST2).
Afterwords it must be configured, see System page 17.
The second stirrer will be assigned to Channel 2.

Example of report
Notes:
1. Channel 1 and Channel 2 can measure pH, mV or ISE with no difference.
Measuring units can be selected in System , seer page 17.
2. The system configuration, sample codification, data output, type of report,
etc, are common parameters for the two channels.
3. Data Logger. The measurements will be stored in the Data Logger of the
corresponding channel.

4. Operation
4.5. pH calibration
To measure pH correctly, the electrode and the instrument set
need to be calibrated regularly with buffer solutions. This
compensates deviations of asymmetry potential and slope of the
electrode over time.
The calibration with buffer solutions corrects variations in the
electrode response.
The instrument allows one-, two- and three- point calibration.
The calibration parameters remain in memory until a new calibra-
tion is performed.
The standard calibration is performed with technical buffers and
standard stability criterion. In addition, the instrument offers
other options for calibration.
It is highly recommended to apply the same stability criteria to
measure and calibrate.
One-point calibration
This type of calibration is acceptable when measuring pH values
similar to those of the buffer solution.
It corrects the asymmetry potential of the electrode.
Two-point calibration
This is the most common calibration.
It is recommended to start with pH 7 as first buffer. pH 4 or pH 9
buffers can be used as a second buffer, depending on the meas-
ured zone (acid or alkaline).
The two-point calibration compensates the asymmetry potential
and the electrode’s sensitivity (slope).
Three-point calibration
This type of calibration is recommended when measurements are
made across the whole pH scale.
As a first point pH 7 is recommended.
For the second and third points, two of the remaining values
must be chosen.
The three-point calibration pH 4.00, 7.01 and 9.21 (at 25ºC,
77ºF) compensates the asymmetry potential and electrode’s
sensitivity in the acid and alkaline zone.
Calibration with technical buffers
Buffers pH 4.00, 7.01 and 9.21 (at 25ºC, 77ºC) are supplied
together with the instrument.
Preparation
Fill the flasks with the corresponding buffer solution (40 ml).
These buffers can be used to perform more than 10 calibrations.
Every calibration flask is supplied with a magnetic bar.

The pH value of the buffer appearing on the display depends on
the temperature of calibration. See buffers pH values as a func-
tion of the temperature on page 19.

Automatic buffers recognition
Technical buffers
pH 2.00, 4.01, 7.00, 9.21 and 10.90 at 25ºC (77ºF).
Buffers DIN 19266
pH 1.679, 4.006, 6.865, 7.000, 9.180, 10.012 and 12.454.
User’s buffers
Suitable when the two above mentioned options will not be
used. The sensION+ MM340 allows introducing the
table pH/Temp. for the desired buffers. See System, page 17.
Calibration to X value
Manual re-adjustment of the measured pH at any value of the
scale. The pH readjustment is equivalent to calibration with only
one buffer.
Calibration data introduction
Manual introduction of calibration data for an electrode cali-
brated previously, for example in calibration laboratory.
Theoretical calibration
Selecting “theoretical calibration” the calibration data of the elec-
trode in use are replaced by the theoretical values at 25ºC (77ºF).
This step is prior to the obtention of a calibration certificate.
Calibration frequency
Select between 0 h and 7 days. The instrument by default is
programmed for daily calibration and indicates the remaining
time to the new calibration.
Selecting 0 h the automatic re-calibration warning is deactivated.
Stability criteria.
Rapid criterion (variation < 0.02 pH in 6 s).
Standard criterion (variation < 0.01 pH in 6 s).
Strict criterion (variation < 0.002 pH in 6 s).
It is highly recommended to apply the same stability criteria to
measure and calibrate.
Important note:
Once the calibration is
re-programmed, it will be
performed with the new
programming.
