Introduction
ThankyouforyourpurchaseofHangar9’sExtra330L.Becausethe size and weight create a higher degree for potential danger,an
addedmeasureofcareandresponsibilityisneededwhenbuildingandflying giant-scale models. If this is your first giant-scale
aerobaticaircraft,it’simportantthatyoucarefullyfollowtheinstructions,especiallythose regarding hinging (pages 9–10),sealingthe
hingegaps(pages11–12),andthe section on flying (pages 33).
Likeallgiant-scaleaerobaticaircraft,theExtrarequirespowerful,heavy-dutyservos.Servos greatly effect the flight performance, feel,
andresponseofthemodel. To get themostoutofyourExtra, it’s importanttouseaccurate,powerfulservos with a minimumof80oz/in
oftorque.Intheprototype models we usedJR8101sandJR8411s with excellentresults.Alesspowerfulservo can lead toacrash.
TheExtra330Ldoesnotincludehardware.Manyexperiencedgiant-scalepilotshave specific hardware preferences and can
individuallychoosethecomponentsthattheyprefer.Hangar9offersanoptional hardware package (page 5) part (#HAN1220, JR/
#HAN1221,FUT)thatincludesthehardwarethatourstaffregularlyusesand recommends.
Throughoutthemanual,theabovehardwarewillbeusedduringtheassembly process. If using another type/brand of hardware, it’s
yourresponsibilitytobesurethatit’sstrongenoughforthisapplication and properly installed.

preventtheservoconnectorsfrompullingapart.
Step 3. Inserttheservointotheaileroncutoutinthebottomof
thewingasshown.Besuretheoutputshaftisorientedclosest to
thetrailingedgeofthewing.Allowtheservoleadtoexit the root
ofthewing.RefertothephotoinStep4.
Step 4. Usingthescrewsincludedwiththeservo,fastenthe
servoinplace.Youmayfindithelpfultodrilla1/16" pilot hole
beforeinstallingthescrews.
Step 5. Removethestockarmsandreplacewithheavy-duty
1"arms(HAN3574JRorHAN3575)togivetheneededcontrol
throwsandtohandletheincreasedloadsofthelargesurfaces.
Thearmsneedtofaceoutwardtowardthewingtipsasshown in
thephoto.BesuretouseadropofBlueLocktiteto secure the
servoarmscrewsifusingmetal-gearedservos.

Step 1. Usingastraightedgeheldinalignment(90°)withthe
servoarmandwiththe hinge line asshown,marktheaileron with
apenwherethestraightedgeintersectstheaileronhingebevel.
Step 2. Measureexactly1/4"rearwardfromthemarkabove
paralleltothehingelineandmakeanothermarkusingapen.
Thiswillbethepositionforthecontrolhorn.
Step 3. Untapetheaileronsfromthewing.Userubbingalcohol
toremoveanytaperesidue.Noticethatthehingepocketsare
alreadycutintoplace.
Step 4. Usinga5/32"drillbitandhanddrill,carefullydrilla
5/32"holethroughtheaileronatthemarkedposition.[Drill
perpendicular(90°)totheaileroncrosssectionratherthanthe
aileronssurface.]Beespeciallycarefulwhenpenetratingthrough
thebottomsurfaceoftheaileronasit’seasytosplitout the wood
andripthecovering.Placingawoodenblockundertheaileron
anddrillingslowlywillpreventtheseproblems.Ifyouchooseto
usethecountersinkscrewsincludedintheHangar9Hardware
Package,countersinkthetopoftheailerontoallowthescrews
tofitflush.
Note: Ahardwoodblock(hardpoint)islocatedbelowthe
sheeting;youwillbedrillingthroughthis.

theinsideofthetappedholeandthe8-32 x 2" Rocket City screw.
Fromthetopoftheaileron,screwthe8-32x2"into the tapped
holeandsecurelytighten.Wipeawayanyexcessepoxywith
rubbingalcoholandapapertowel.ScrewtheA-nutinplaceas
shown.Allowtheepoxytofullycure.
Step 7. Screwthemoldedswivellinkontothe8-32screwuntil
thedistancefromthe aileronsurfacetothe bottomofthelink
is5/8".
Step 8. Installthecontrolhornintheoppositeaileronusingthe
samemethod.

Properlyhingingthecontrolsurfacesongiant-scalemodelsis
vitallyimportant!Poorlyinstalledhingesaffectthemodel’s
precisionandcontrolresponseandcanalsobedangerous.Each
andeveryhingeneedstobesecurelybondedinplaceinboth the
flyingsurfaceandthecontrolsurface.Thehingepivotpoints
needtobeexactlyparalleltoeachotherandpreciselylocatedon
thecenterofthehingeline.WeregularlyuseRobartSuperHinge
Pointsinallgiant-scaleaircraft.Theyareeasytoinstall,very
strong,andoffersmoothfriction-freecontrol.TheHangar9
Extra330LcontrolsurfacesarepredrilledtouseRobart’sSuper
HingePoints.
Step 1. Sandeachendofthehingepointhingeusingcoarse
sandpaper.Thiswillimprovethebondoftheepoxytothehinge.
Step 2. Mix1ounceof30-minuteepoxy.Usingagluesyringe
ortoothpick,placeasufficientamountof30-minuteepoxyinto
oneofthehingepocketsonthewingstrailingedge.Installone
ofthehingepointsuntilthehingepincenterisflushwith the
trailingedgeofthewing.Someepoxyshouldoozeoutofthe
pocketasthehingeisinstalled.Ifnot,removethehingeand
applymoreepoxy.Aftergluingafewhinges,you’llgetthehang
ofjusthowmuchepoxyisneeded.Wipeawayanyexcessepoxy
withrubbingalcohol.Recheckthatthecenterofthehingepinis
flushandparallelwiththetrailingedge.Continueinstalling
hingesinthetrailingedgeofthewing.Thecontrolsurfaces
(ailerons)willbeinstalledaftertheepoxyisfullycured.
Note: Besurethatthehingepivotpinsareparalleland
flushtothetrailingedge.It’simportanttofrequently
mixafreshbatchof30-minuteepoxyinorderto
achievegoodgluejointpenetration.Ifyounoticethe
epoxybecomingthicker,thenmixanewbatch!

Step 3. Allowtheepoxytofullycureforatleast6hours.When
cured,workeachhingethroughoutitsfullmotionseveraltimes
usingyourhands.Thiswillbreakfreeanyepoxythatmayhave
founditswayintothehingejoint.Movethehingethroughoutits
fulltraveluntilnoresistanceisfelt.Thismaytakeasmany as
40or50times.
Step 4. Mix1ounceof30-minuteepoxy.Usingasyringeor
toothpick,placeasufficientamountofepoxyineachofthehinge
pocketsinoneaileronhalf.
Step 5. Carefullyinstalltheailerononthewing,makingsure
thehingesareinsertedintheirrespectivehingepockets.Press
theaileronandwingtogethersuchthatlessthana1/64"hinge
linegapexistsbetweentheaileronandwing.Thebevelsshould
virtuallytouch.Usingapapertowelandrubbingalcohol,wipe
awayanyvisibleepoxyaroundthehinges.
Step 6. Double-checkthehingegapandallowtheepoxyto
fullycureforatleast6hours.Nowisagoodtime to epoxy the
hingesontheotheraileronhalfusingthesametechniques.
Step 7. Whenfullycured,moveeachcontrolsurface
throughoutitstravelrangeseveraltimestobreakawayanyepoxy
inthehinge.Besuretodeflectthesurfacefully.

Sealing the Hinge Gaps
It’simperativethattheaileronandelevatorhingelinesbesealed
airtighttopreventflutter.Sealingthehingelinehasseveral
advantages.Asealedhingelinegivesagreatercontrolresponse
foragivencontroldeflection.Italsooffersmoreprecise,
consistentcontrolresponseandmakestrimmingeasier.
Sealing the aileron and elevator hinge line is
mandatory. Failure to do so may cause control surface
flutter, resulting in a crash.
Step 1. Cut a piece of PearlBlueUltraCote®(notincluded)
forsealingtheaileronstoapproximately3"x42".Foldthe
UltraCote®downthecenterwiththeadhesivesidetotheoutside
makingasharpcreaseatthefold.
Step 2. Usingaruler,measure1/2"fromthefoldedcreaseand
marktwoplaceswithapen.
Step 3. Usingasharp#11bladeandastraightedge,carefully
cutthroughbothlayersofUltraCote®coveringatthe1/2"point
markedinStep2.
Step 4. Markandcutthefoldedcoveringtoanoveralllength
of40".Thispiecewillbeinsertedandironeddownintothe hinge
bevelonthebottomoftheaileron.

Step 5. RemovethebackingfromtheUltraCote®.Placethe
foldedcreasesideintothecenterofthehingelineonthe bottom
ofthewing.Usingastraightedgeasshown,holdoneside of the
coveringinplacewhileironingdowntheoppositesidewitha
sealingiron.Werecommendsettingtheirontemperatureto
320°forthisoperation.
Step 6. Fullydeflecttheaileronintheupposition.Placethe
straightedgeoverthehingelinecoveringthatyoujustironed
downinStep5withtheedgeofthestraightedgeplaced firmly at
thebottomofthehingelineasshown.Irondownthisside of the
covering,makingsuretheaileronisfullydeflected.

Step 1. Screwa4-40balllink5to6turnsontoa41/2" long
4-40linkage.Screwtheoppositeendofthelinkageintothe
swivelcontrolhornthatwasinstalledinStep2fivetosix turns.
Adjustthelinkagelengthuntiltheholeintheballlinkaligns with
theouterholeintheservoarmwhentheaileronisneutral and
theservoarmiscentered.
Note: Hangar9TitaniumPro-Linksfeatureright-hand
threadsononeendandleft-handthreadsonthe
other,allowingforeasy,accurateadjustmentwithout
disconnectingthelinkages.Consistentlyputtingthe
right-handthreadstowardtheservoarmsonall
servoswillpreventyoufromgettingconfusedasto
whichwaytoturnthelinkagetolengthenorshorten
thelink.Hangar9alsooffersaPro-LinkWrench
(HAN3558)tomakeadjustmentseasier.
Step 2. Usingthe4-40screws(don’tsubstituteastandard
screw)andnutsincludedintheRocketCitypackage,attachthe
balllinktotheouterholeinthearmfromthebottom side as
shown.Thesequenceisscrew,balllink,servoarm,andnut.
Don’tforgettouseBlueLocktite.Thetaperedstandoffis
notused.

hardware(grommetsandeyelets)atthistime.
Non-Computer Radio
Step 1. Ifusinganon-computerradio,installfour18"servo
extensions,oneoneachservo.Tapeandtieaknotateach
connectortopreventinadvertentdisconnection.Installoneside
onlyofthetwoY-harnesses to two of the servos, also tyingknots
topreventdisconnection.Theothertwoservoswillbehookedup
totheY-harness when installed in the airplane. One elevator
servowillneedtobeareversed-directionservo.

computerradio,besuretoinstalloneoftheservoswiththe
Y-harnessattachedinthetopopening(elevator)andtheother
servowiththeY-harnessattachedinthebottomopening
(rudder).Installtheotherservosintheoppositesideofthe
fuselagebeingsuretoconnecttheservototheotheropen
connectoroftherespectiveY-harnesses.Don’tforgettotapeand
knottheconnectors.Oneoftheelevatorservosmustbea
reversedservo.

Step 1. Toproperlylocatethepositionofthecontrolhornon
thebottomoftheelevator,measureinward1"fromtherootand
rearward1/4"fromthetopofthebevel.Markthisposition on
bothelevators.
Step 2. Usinga5/32"drillbitandhanddrill,carefullydrilla
5/32"holethroughtheelevatorsattheabovemarkedposition.It’s
importanttodrill90°totheelevator’scenterlinetotheelevator’s
surface.Beespeciallycarefulwhenpenetratingthroughthe
bottomsurfaceoftheelevatorasit’seasytosplitoutthe wood
andripthecovering.Placingawoodenblockundertheelevator
anddrillingslowlywillpreventtheseproblems.Ifyouchooseto
usethecountersinkscrewsincluded,countersinkthetopofthe
elevatortoallowthescrewstofitflush.
Step 3. Usingan8-32tap,threadtheholesthatyoujustdrilled
intheelevators.

Step 4. Mixasmallamountof30-minuteepoxyandlightlycoat
theinsideofthethreadedholesandthe8-32x2"Rocket City
screw.Fromthetopoftheelevator,threadthe8-32screwsinto
thetappedholesandtighten.Wipeawayanyexcessepoxywith
rubbingalcoholandpapertowels.
Step 5. Screwthemoldedswivellinkontothe8-32screwuntil
thedistancefromtheelevatorsurfacetothebottomofthelink is
5/8".Repeatthisfortheotherelevator.
Step 6. Gluetheelevatorhingesinplaceusingthesame
techniquesusedtohingetheailerons.Afterhingingtheelevator,
usethesametechniquetosealtheelevator’shingegaps.Use
WhiteUltraCote®forthebottomoftheelevator.Youcan
substituteClearUltraCote®ifWhiteisnotavailable.
Step 7. Noticethatthelongerofthetwotailtubeshasahole at
eachendandthataholeislocatednearthecenterof the stab on
thetop.ItmaybecoveredwithUltraCote®.Ifso,usea #11 knife
bladetoremovethecoveringoverthehole.A4-40x3/8" socket
headscrewandsplitwasherarethreadedthroughtheholeinthe
eachhalfofthestabilizerandintothetailtube.Thissecurely
fastensthestabtothefuselage.
Step 8. Insertthelongerofthetwotubesintotherearholein
thestabilizerroot.Carefullyaligntheholeinthetubewiththe
holeinthestab.Threadthe4-40socketheadscrewandsplit
washerintotheholesecuringthetubetothestab.

Step 9. Inserttheshorterofthetwotailtubesintotheforward
holeintherearofthefuselage.Insertthestabilizerwithtube in
therearhole.Carefullyslidethestabontothetubeuntilit
touchesthesideofthefuselage.Thismaybeatightfit.
Step 10. Installtheotherstabilizerontothetubeontheother
sideofthefuselage.Carefullyslidethestabontothetubesuntil
itcontactsthefuselage.Whenbothstabsaretouchingthe
fuselage,threadtheother4-40socketheadscrewandsplit
washerintothetopoftheotherstabtosecurethemin place.
Note: Frequentlycheckthatthesescrewsremaintight.
Step 11. Removethestockservoarmsfromtheelevatorservos
andreplacethemwithheavy-duty1"arms.Thearmsneedto
facedownasshownbelow.Besuretouseadropof Blue
Locktite®ontheservoarmscrewifusingmetalgearedservos.
Step 12. Screwa4-40balllink5to6turnsontoa41/2"long
4-40linkage.Screwtheoppositeendofthelinkageintothe
swivelcontrolhornonthe elevator. Adjust thelinkagelengthuntil
theholeintheballlinklinesupwiththeouterhole in the servo
armwhentheelevatorisneutralandtheservoarmiscentered.
Step 13. Usingthe4-40screwsandnutsincludedinthe Rocket
Citypackage,attachtheballlinktotheouterholeinthe arm. The
correctsequenceis4-40screw,balllink,servoarm,and4-40
nut.(Don’tuse thespacer/standoff.)Be sure touseBlueLocktite®.

Step 6. ThreadanA-nut(includedwithswivelclevis)ontoeach
sideofthethreadedrodandsecurelytightenagainsttherudder.
Step 7. Screwamoldedswivellinkontoeachsideofthe8-32
threadedrodsothatitistightagainsttheA-nut.
Step 8. Hingetherudderusingthesametechniqueaswiththe
aileronandelevator.
Step 9. Removethestockservoarmsandreplacethemwith
heavy-duty11/4"arms. The arms needtobepositionedasshown.
Step 10. Screwa4-40balllink5to6turnsontoa5" long
4-40linkage.Screwthe opposite endofthelinkageinto the swivel
controlhornthatwasinstalledinSection6.Adjustthelength
untiltheholeintheballlinklinesupwiththeouter hole in the
servoarmwhentherudderisatneutralandthearmis centered.
Step 11. Usingthe4-40screwsandnutsincludedinthe
RocketCitypackage,attachtheballlinktotheouterholein the
arm.Thecorrectsequenceis4-40screw,balllink,servoarm,
and4-40nut.(Don’tusethespacer/standoff.)Besuretouse
BlueLocktite®.
