Read these instructions carefully before handling the MOB Signal!
Please read these instructions carefully before handling
the MOB. Note that MOB Smoke has no electric lights, but all
mountings and operating procedures are the same as for
MOB Light and Smoke.
1. To comply with SOLAS, two signals must be mounted
vertically facing seaward one to port and one to starboard
of ship´s bridge, using brackets supplied as required.
2. Mount the MOB at a minimum of 5 m (16.4 ft) above water
line. (On smaller vessels where this distance is not possible
or practical, see ”Manual Operation of Signal”).
Maximum height of mounting 60 m (197 ft).
3. Ensure signal has a clear unobstructed drop to the sea.
4. The MOB is designed to be used with a life buoy weighing
2.5 kg (5.5 lb) minimum, attached by 8 mm (0.32 in)
diameter line 4 m (13.12 ft) long.
5. Position the MOB either behind or directly to the side of the
life buoy.

The MOB has a service life as indicated by the date label on
the signal, and must be replaced after this date. Replace
the mounting bracket at the same time as the MOB if it is
subjected to extreme weather, or as required after inspection
of bracket condition.

5. Remove the transport safety
pin. Insert the safety pin in the
predrilled hole on the bracket.
Mounting Instructions
1. Mount the bracket on the
vessel using four M8 or 5/16 inch
bolts.
3. Fit the MOB in the bracket,
the pin into the hole, and the
clamp around the body of the
MOB.
4. Attach the signal to the life
buoy with a line of minimum 4 m
length and 8 mm diameter. Use a
bowline hitch and ensure that the
line goes all the way around the
signal.
On the MOB Light & Smoke, the
two lights should go out if the
signal is mounted correctly.
2. Use a sharp object to remove
the plastic tube from the MOB. On
the MOB Light & Smoke, the two
lights should then light up.

Method of Operation
The MOB operates automatically when the life buoy is
released and has separate ignition systems for light
and smoke.
The lights are operated by an integral power source.
The MOB emits light and smoke automatically when it
leaves the bracket. After release, smoke is emitted for
at least 15 minutes and the two electric lights on MOB
Light & Smoke operate for a minimum of 2 hours at
2 candela.
Manual Operation of Signal
On a craft where the 5 m mounting height is
unobtainable, you must mount the signal inboard on
the wheelhouse bulkhead and operate and launch the
MOB with the life buoy manually. Ensure the life buoy is
attached to the MOB.
1. Pull the MOB away from the bracket.
2. Immediately throw the MOB overboard.
