adopting the rele ant recommendations gi en in British Standards BS 8303, BS
EN 15287-1:2007 as an alternati e means to achie e an equi alent le el of
performance to that obtained following the guidance gi en in Appro ed
Document J.
Please note that it is a legal requirement under England and Wales Building
Regulations that the installation of the sto e is either carried out under Local
Authority Building Control appro al or is installed by a Competent Person
registered with a Go ernment appro ed Competent Persons Scheme. HETAS Ltd
operate such a Scheme and a listing of their Registered Competent Persons can
be found on their website at www.hetas.co.uk.
CO Alarms:-
Building regulations require that when e er a new or replacement fixed solid fuel
or wood/biomass appliance is installed in a dwelling a carbon monoxide alarm
must be fitted in the same room as the appliance. Further guidance on the
installation of the carbon monoxide alarm is a ailable in BS EN 50292:2002 and
from the alarm manufacturer’s instructions.
Pro ision of an alarm must not be considered a substitute for either installing the
appliance correctly or ensuring regular ser icing and maintenance of the
appliance and chimney system.
HEALTH AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
Special care must be taken when installing the stove such that the requirements of the
Health an Safety at Work Act are met.
Handling
A equate facilities must be available for loa ing, unloa ing an site han ling.

STOVE PERFORMANCE
In the UK the stove has been approve by HETAS Lt as an intermittent operating
appliance for burning woo logs only.
PREPARATORY WORK AND SAFETY CHECKS
IMPORTANT WARNING
This stove must not be installe into a chimney that serves any other heating appliance.
There must not be an extractor fan fitte in the same room as the stove as this can cause
the stove to emit fumes into the room.
Chimney
In or er for the stove to perform satisfactorily the chimney height must be sufficient to
ensure an a equate raught of approximately 15 Pa so as to clear the pro ucts of
combustion an prevent smoke problems into the room.
NOTE: A chimney height of not less than 4.5 metres measure vertically from the outlet of
the stove to the top of the chimney shoul be satisfactory. Alternatively the calculation
proce ure given in EN 13384-1 may be use as the basis for eci ing whether a particular
chimney esign will provi e sufficient raught.
The outlet from the chimney shoul be above the roof of the buil ing in accor ance with
the provisions of Buil ing Regulations Approve Document J.
If installation is into an existing chimney then it must be soun an have no cracks or other
faults which might allow fumes into the house. Ol er properties, especially, may have
chimney faults or the cross section may be too large i.e. more than 230 mm x 230 mm.
Reme ial action shoul be taken, if require , seeking expert a vice, if necessary. If it is
foun necessary to line the chimney then a flue liner suitable for soli fuel must be use in
accor ance with Buil ing Regulations Approve Document J.
Any existing chimney must be clear of obstruction an have been swept clean imme iately
before installation of the stove. If the stove is fitte in place of an open fire then the
chimney shoul be swept one month after installation to clear any soot falls which may
have occurre ue to the ifference in combustion between the stove an the open fire.
If there is no existing chimney then either a prefabricate block chimney in accor ance
with Buil ing Regulations Approve Document J or a twin walle insulate stainless steel
flue to BS 1856-1 can be use . These chimneys must be fitte in accor ance with the
manufacturer’s instructions an Buil ing Regulations.

September 2013 Pharos Interior Manual
A single wall metal fluepipe is suitable for connecting the stove to the chimney but is not
suitable for using for the complete chimney. The chimney an connecting fluepipe shoul
not be less than the size of the outlet socket of the appliance.
Any ben in the chimney or connecting fluepipe shoul not excee 45°. 90° ben s shoul
not be use .
Combustible material shoul not be locate where the heat issipating through the walls of
fireplaces or flues coul ignite it. Therefore when installing the stove in the presence of
combustible materials ue account must be taken of the gui ance on the separation of
combustible material given in Buil ing Regulations Approve Document J an also in
these stove instructions.
If it is foun that there is excessive raught in the chimney then a raught stabiliser shoul
be fitte . Fitting of a raught stabiliser will affect the requirement for the permanent air
supply into the room in which the stove is fitte in accor ance with Approve Document J
(see also combustion air supply).
A equate provision e.g. easily accessible soot oor or oors must be provi e for
sweeping the chimney an connecting fluepipe where it is not inten e for the chimney to
be swept through the appliance, also to permit visual checks on the integrity of the flue
when the appliance is service .
Hearth
The hearth shoul be able to accommo ate the weight of the stove an its chimney if the
chimney is not in epen ently supporte . The weight of the stove is in icate in the
brochure.
The stove shoul always be installe on a non-combustible hearth of a size an
construction that is in accor ance with the provisions of the current Buil ing Regulations
Approve Document J.
The clearance istances to combustible material beneath, surroun ing or upon the hearth
an walls a jacent to the hearth shoul comply with the gui ance on the separation of
combustible material given in Buil ing Regulations Approve Document J an also in
these stove instructions.
If the stove is to be installe on a combustible floor surface, it must be covere with a
non-combustible material at least 12mm thick, in accor ance with Buil ing Regulations
Approve Document J, to a istance of 30 cm in front of the stove an 15 cm to each si e
measuring from the oor of the combustion chamber.

Combustion air supply
In or er for the stove to perform efficiently an safely there shoul be an a equate air
supply into the room in which the stove is installe to provi e combustion air. This is
particularly necessary if the room is ouble-glaze or a flue raught stabiliser is
operating in the same room as the appliance. It may be necessary to increase the air
vent size in property with low air permeability ( < 5.0 m
3
/(h.m
2
).
The provision of air supply to the stove must be in accor ance with current Buil ing
Regulations Approve Document J. An opening win ow is not appropriate for this
purpose.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If applicable an the appliance is being fitte within an existing
fireplace recess, specialist a vice shoul be sought before fitting any permanent
ventilation within this area.
Connection to chimney
Stoves may have a choice of either a rear or top flue gas connector that allows
connection to either a masonry chimney or a prefabricate factory ma e insulate metal
chimney in accor ance with their instructions. In some cases it may be necessary to fit
an a aptor to increase the iameter of the flue to the minimum require 150 mm section
of the chimney or liner.
Electrical Ser ices
The installation of any electrical services uring the installation of this appliance must be
carrie out by a registere competent electrician an in accor ance with the
requirements of the latest issue of BS 7671
Carbon Monoxide Alarm
A carbon monoxi e alarm complying with BS EN 50292 must be fitte in the same room
as the appliance. It shoul be positione on the ceiling at least 300mm from any wall or,
if it is locate on a wall, as high up as possible (above any oors an win ows) but not
within 150mm of the ceiling. The alarm shoul also be between 1m an 3m horizontally
from the appliance.

Commissioning and hando er
Ensure loose parts are fitte in accor ance with the instructions given in the
instruction booklet.
On completion of the installation allow a suitable perio of time for any fire cement
an mortar to ry out, when a small fire may be lit an checke to ensure the
smoke an fumes are taken from the stove up the chimney an emitte safely to
atmosphere. Do not run at full output for at least 24 hours.
On completion of the installation an commissioning ensure that the operating
instructions for the stove are left with the customer. Ensure to a vise the customer
on the correct use of the appliance with the fuels likely to be use on the stove an
warn them to use only the recommen e fuels for the stove.
A vise the user what to o shoul smoke or fumes be emitte from the stove. The
customer shoul be warne to use a fireguar to BS 8423:2002 (Replaces BS
6539) in the presence of chil ren, age an /or infirm persons.
Installation
It is prohibite to carry out unauthorise alterations to the stove.
There must be plenty of fresh air in the room where the stove is being installe , in
or er to ensure proper combustion. Note that any mechanical exhaust ventilation -
e.g. an extraction hoo - may re uce the air supply. Any air grilles must be place
in such a manner, that the air supply is not blocke .
Buil ing Regulations Approve Document J gives specific gui ance on the require
permanent ventilation into the room for combustion air of soli fuel appliances.
The floor structure must be able to carry the weight of the woo burning stove, as
well as the weight of a chimney, if necessary.
When you choose where to set up your woo burning stove, you shoul consi er
the heat istribution to the other rooms. This will enable you to get the best use out
of your stove.
The stove shoul be set up at a safe istance from inflammable materials.
See the manufacturer's plate on the woo burning stove.
