1 Safety instructions
Intended use
The SCMHV (signal conditioner) is only used to mea
sure the differential voltages within the ratings stated in
the Specifications, in conjunction with a suitable Quan
tumX module.
The signal conditioner is designed for use in clean and
dry rooms, and cables must not be routed through out
door areas either. It must not be operated where dust
levels or the moisture content of the air are particularly
high, where there is a risk of explosion, or in an aggres
sive chemical environment.
See the specifications for the permissible ambient tem
perature, as well as the permissible storage and trans
portation temperatures. Should condensation have
formed during transportation, the SCMHV must be accli
matized for approx. 2 hours, before being put into opera
tion.
The signal conditioner must only be operated on suitable
QuantumX modules (see specifications) — it is not ac
ceptable to apply measuring voltage when the signal con
ditioner is not connected. The operating position is op
tional.
Everyone involved with siting, starting up, or operating
the signal conditioner must have read and understood
the operating manual and in particular the technical
safety instructions.
In the interests of safety, the signal conditioner should
only be operated by qualified personnel (see below) and
as described in the operating manual. It is also essential
to comply with the legal and safety requirements for the

Safety instructions

application concerned during use. The same applies to
the use of accessories.
The signal conditioner is not intended for use as a safety
component. Please also follow the instructions in the “Ad
ditional safety precautions" section. Proper and safe op
eration requires proper transportation, correct storage,
siting and mounting, and careful operation.
Operating conditions
SProtect the signal conditioner against direct contact
with water.
SProtect the signal conditioner against moisture and
humidity, as well as weather conditions such as rain
or snow. The signal conditioner protection class is
IP20 (DIN EN 60529).
SDo not expose the signal conditioner to direct sunlight.
SComply with the maximum permissible ambient tem
peratures and maximum humidity figures stated in the
specifications.
SThe signal conditioner is designed for the CAT II mea
surement category (measuring circuits directly con
nected to sockets or similar low-voltage grid installa
tion connectors), with degree of pollution 2
(non-conductive pollution, temporary conductivity can
occur, as a result of condensation).
SIf the signal conditioner is operated outside the mea
surement category ratings specified in
EN 61010-1:2010 (not connected to the supply net
work, formerly CAT I), it is necessary to analyze the
operating voltage, the loop impedance, the occasional
overvoltage and the transient overvoltages of the cir
cuit to be measured. The SCMHV can only be used
once the analysis data has been compared with the

Safety instructions
SCM-HV A3615-4.0 HBM: public 5
maximum permissible values specified in the SCMHV
data sheet.
SThe signal conditioner must not be modified from the
design or safety engineering point of view except with
our express agreement. In particular, any repair or
soldering work on motherboards (replacement of com
ponents) is prohibited. When exchanging complete
modules, use only original parts from HBM.
SThe signal conditioner is delivered from the factory
with a fixed hardware and software configuration.
Changes can only be made within the possibilities
documented in the manuals.
SThe signal conditioner is maintenance free.
SPlease note the following when cleaning the housing:
- Disconnect the signal conditioner from all current
and voltage supplies.
- Also switch off the feeding QuantumX module.
- Clean the housing with a soft, slightly damp (not
wet!) cloth. Never use solvent as this could damage
the labeling or the housing.
- When cleaning, ensure that no liquid gets into the
signal conditioner or onto the connections.
- Give the SCM-HV sufficient time to dry before start
ing it up again.
SThe signal conditioner must be stored in dry, closed
rooms. If the signal conditioner has been transported
at extreme temperatures, you should wait for at least
2 hours to allow the signal conditioner to acclimatize,
before switching it on.
SIn accordance with national and local environmental
protection and material recovery and recycling regula
tions, old signal conditioners that can no longer be

used must be disposed of separately and not with nor
mal household garbage.
SThe SCMHV is intended solely for use in conjunction
with a QuantumX module. If the SCMHV is also inte
grated into a system, it is the responsibility of the sys
tem installer to keep the system safe.
Qualified personnel
Qualified persons means persons entrusted with the in
stallation, fitting, commissioning and operation of the
product who possess the appropriate qualifications for
their function.
SFor measurements covered by the low voltage direc
tive, the signal conditioner must only be connected by
a qualified electrician, or by someone with electrical
training under the supervision of a qualified electri
cian. (A qualified electrician is someone whose techni
cal training, know-how and experience, as well as
knowledge of the relevant requirements, allows them
to assess the work assigned to them and to recognize
potential risks, and who has been designated a quali
fied electrician by the contractor).
Working safely
SWhen unpacking the contents of the package, check
that everything is present. When it is unpacked, the
SCMHV should be inspected for mechanical dam
age. If damage has occurred during transit, the signal
conditioner must not be operated. Any shipping dam
age caused by inadequate packaging is excluded
from the warranty.
SError messages should only be acknowledged once
the cause of the error is removed and no further dan
ger exists.

Safety instructions
SCM-HV A3615-4.0 HBM: public 7
SThe signal conditioners and devices of automation
must be blocked in such a way that adequate protec
tion or locking against unintentional actuation is pro
vided (e.g. access checks, password protection, etc.).
SIf the SCMHV is operated on QuantumX modules,
additional safety precautions must be taken in terms
of both hardware and software for signal conditioners
working in networks, so that a line break or other in
terruptions to signal transmission do not cause unde
fined states or loss of data in the automation device.
SAfter making settings and carrying out activities that
are password-protected, you must make sure that any
controls that may be connected remain in a safe con
dition until the switching performance of the signal
conditioner has been tested.
Additional safety precautions
This signal conditioner is built and tested in accordance

tain this condition and ensure risk-free operation (reduc
ing residual risks, EN 610101:2010 17 c), the user must
comply with the instructions and warning notices con
tained in this operating manual.
Additional safety precautions to meet the requirements of
the relevant national and local accident prevention regu
lations must be taken in plants where malfunctions could
cause major damage, loss of data or even personal in
jury.
The scope of supply and performance of the signal con
ditioner covers only a small area of measurement tech
nology. Before starting up the signal conditioner in a sys
tem, a project planning and risk analysis must first be

Introduction
16 A3615-4.0 HBM: public SCM-HV
3 Introduction
The SCMHV signal conditioner is used for the differen
tial measurement of high voltages with QuantumX mod
ules offering strain gauge full bridge input, for example
MX840A, MX440A and MX410/B.
Within the scope of measurement category II (supply net
work from the socket), the maximum operating voltage to
ground potential is 300 V DC or 300 V rms AC. Taking
the maximum acceptable rms value into account, the
peak value of the voltage must not at any time exceed
700 V between the connections (differential mode) and to
ground potential (common mode).
Its robustness in the face of high voltages and transients
also makes the SCMHV suitable input protection for
QuantumX modules, when the voltages to be measured
include high voltage peaks.
The 10 V measuring range allows low voltage values to
be measured at a high potential and currents to be mea
sured via an external shunt.
The SCMHV applies a safety limit to the measuring volt
age, which is electrically isolated from the adjacent chan
nels in the QuantumX module. This allows any number of
SCMHVs to be operated without mutual interference.
The signal conditioner can be automatically identified and
adjusted with TEDS (electronic data sheet).
