U.S.ANDCANADA CERTIFICATION
The NOVUS Series Gas Appliance has been tested in accordance with the ANSI standard Z21.88-1998 in the United
states, the current CSA 2.33-M98 in Canada, and has been listed by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. for installation as
described in this anual. All co ponents are UL, AGA, CGA or CSA safety certified.

This installation ust confor with local codes. In the absence of local codes you ust co ply with the National Fuel
Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1-latest edition in the U.S.A. and the CAN/CGA B149 Installation Codes in Canada.
The Novus Series gas appliance has been tested and listed for use in anufactured housing ( obile ho es). These
installation instructions confor with the Manufactured Home Construction and Safety Standard, Title 24 CFR, Part
3280, or when such a standard is not applicable, the Standard for Manufacturer Home Installations, ANSI A225.1.

be located in a roo . The NOVUS Series ay be
installed directly on the floor or raised on a hearth.
These appliances are certified for installation in a

D. SETTING THE FIREBOX
POSITIONING THE FIREBOX
This appliance ay be placed on a s ooth co bustible or nonco bustible continuous, flat surface. When the
appliance is installed directly on carpeting, tile or other co bustible aterial other than wood flooring, the appliance
shall be installed on a etal or wood panel extending the full width and depth of the appliance. Slide the firebox into
position and level the appliance fro side-to-side and front-to-back. Shi with nonco bustible aterial as
necessary.
Secure the appliance by bending out the nailing flanges on each side of the appliance and nail to fra ing. The
nailing flanges have been positioned 5/8 inch back fro the front of the firebox to allow the addition of drywall.

This appliance may only use the direct vent system designed for use with the appliance and must
not be connected to a chimney flue servicing a separate solid fuel or gas burning appliance.

For corner installations with horizontal venting, a
axi u of one 45° elbow ay be used. The
axi u horizontal run following the elbow is
18 to the base of the cap. See Figure 9.
WARNING!
The horizontal run of vent must have a ¼ rise
for every 1 of run towards the termination.
Never allow the vent to run downward. This
could cause high temperatures and may
present a fire hazard.
WARNING!
If you have chosen horizontal termination,
be sure there are no future obstructions
from trees, bushes, snow drifts, etc.
CAUTION:
rovisions shall be made to provide
adequate combustion and ventilation air.
NOTE: Exterior wall thickness must be a
minimum of 4 to a maximum of 17½.
b. No Elbows
The axi u horizontal run with no vertical
sections of vent is 18 fro the back of the
appliance to the base of the cap. See Figure 8.

rise for every 1 of run towards the termina-
tion. Never allow the vent to run downward.
This could cause high temperatures and may

G. VENTING - FRAMING & CONSTRUCTION
1. INSTALLING THE INTERIOR WALL
SHIELD (WS6)
Fra e a hole in a co bustible wall for an interior wall
shield, as shown in Figure 22 (rear vent) and
Figure23 (top vent) whenever a wall is penetrated.
This shield aintains ini u clearances and
prevents cold air infiltration.
The ter inal cap location ust eet all local and
national codes and not be easily blocked or
obstructed. See page 11.
If the hole being penetrated is of nonco bustible
aterials, a 9 dia eter hole is acceptable.
Secure the shield to the fra ing as shown in
Figure24.
The last section of vent ay require cutting a piece of
ini u installation (MI) pipe or using a slip section
pipe, depending upon wall thickness and appliance
location. See Figure 25.

installed if a cap is within 30 of a
vinyl soffit.

3. FIRESTOP SPACER/VENT
INSTALLATION
Fra e an opening and install a firestop spacer (FS6)
whenever the vent penetrates a ceiling/floor area, as
shown in Figure 27. Fra e the opening with the sa e
sized lu ber as used in the ceiling/floor joists. When
installing a top vent, vertical appliance, the hole
should be directly above the appliance, unless the
flue is offset. DO NOT pack insulation around the vent.

2. INSTALLING THE REAR VENT HEAT
SHIELD
a. For horizontally ter inated rear vent appliances,
the flue heat shields MUST be placed 1 above
the top of the vent between the wall shield and
the base of the ter ination cap. The shields are
attached to the wall shield and base of the cap
with two screws each. When installed, the caps
shield will rest under the wall shields shield. The
shields ust have at least 1½ overlap. See
Figure 25. Depending on the installation, the
shields ay be too long and will require
tri ing. If the shields are too short, aterial
ust be added.
b. Minimum Venting Clearances
Horizontal runs off the back of the firebox to
the wall shield:
1 sides and botto of vent
For top clearance, see Figure 26.
Horizontal runs inside a wall (heat shields must
be installed):
3 air space on top of vent
1 air space on sides and botto of vent
Vertical Runs:
1 air space around vent.

4. CHASE/TERMINATION INSTALLATION
Figure 28 and Table 1 specify ini u vent heights
for various pitched roofs. Vent sections ay have to
be cut to a certain length.
These vent heights are necessary for safety and do
not ensure draft-free operation. Trees, buildings,
adjoining roof lines, adverse conditions, etc. ay
create a need for a taller vent should down drafting
occur.

NOVUS DIRECT VENT INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
H. VENT ASSEMBLY
1. ATTACHING THE VENTING TO THE
APPLIANCE
To attach the first VP section to the firebox collars,
si ply slide the flared end of the inner flue of the VP
section over the inner collar on the firebox. At the sa e
ti e, insert the outer flue into the outer collar on the
firebox. Push the vent section into the firebox collar
until all the lances have snapped into place. Tug
slightly on the vent to confir it has co pletely locked
in place.
2. ASSEMBLING VENT SECTIONS
a. Start the flared inner flue of Section A over the
inner flue of Section B.
b. Insert the outer flue of Section A into the outer
flue of Section B. See Figure 29. Note: Squeezing the pipe slightly to fit may be
necessary.

5. INSTALLING THE VERTICAL TERMINATION CAP
To install the VP-TV, si ply slide the inner collar of the cap over the inner vent and place the outer collar of the cap
over the outer vent. Secure with three screws into the outer vent.

4. ASSEMBLING THE SLIP SECTIONS
Slip sections should be snapped into the first ating
piece, then expanded to their desired length, aking
sure that a 1½ overlap is aintained between the
two sections of the slip section. The two sections of
the slip section then need to be secured by driving
two screws through the overlapping portions of the
vent. See Figure 32. This will secure the slip section
to the desired length and prevent it fro separating.
The slip section can then be attached to the next
section of vent.
5. DISASSEMBLING VENT SECTIONS
(only if necessary)
To disasse ble any two pieces of pipe, rotate either
section so that the sea s on both pipe sections are
aligned as shown in Figure 33. They can then be
carefully pulled apart.

3. ASSEMBLING MINIMUM INSTALLATION
(MI) SECTIONS
MI sections are non-unitized so that they can be cut to
a certain length. To use these sections, they ust be
cut to length fro the non-expanded end. See
Figure31. They can then be attached by first
connecting the expanded end of the MI inner flue with
the inner flue fro the adjacent vent section and
securing with three screws. The expanded portion of
the MI inner flue ust overlap co pletely with the
untreated end of the adjacent vent section. The outer
flue can then be inserted into the adjacent outer flue
expanded end and attached to the next vent section
with three screws. The other end of the MI vent section
can then be attached by fitting a snap lock section to
it and snapping it together as nor al.

Once both inner and outer flues are started, press
Section A into Section B fir ly until all lances have
snapped into place. Tug slightly on Section A to
confir it has co pletely locked into place. See
Figure 30.
Note: Make sure that the seams are NOT aligned
in order to prevent unintentional disconnection.

1. HIGH ALTITUDE INSTALLATION
For U.S. installation, appliances are tested and
approved for elevations fro 0-2000 feet. When
installing this appliance at an elevation above 2000
feet, National Fuel Gas Codes require a decrease of
the input rating by changing the existing burner orifice
to a s aller size. Input should be reduced 4% for each
1000 feet above sea level. Check with the local gas
utility for proper orifice size identification. The correct
orifice is available fro your Heatilator distributor.
For Canada, appliances are certified for elevations
fro 0-4500 feet. When installing this appliance at
an elevation between 0-4500 feet in Canada, the input
rating does not need to be reduced. When installing
this appliance at an elevation above 4500 feet in
Canada, check with local authorities.
2. GAS LINE CONNECTION
Re ove the lower grille panel as shown in Figures
34-35. The appliance is provided with a stainless
steel flexible connector and anual shutoff valve. The
inco ing gas line should be piped into the valve
co part ent and connected to the 1/2 FIP
connection provided on the anual shutoff valve. All
connections ust be tightened and checked for leaks
with a soap and water solution or leak detector. Bleed
the gas line to extract any air that ay have been
trapped inside the pipe. See Figure 36 to connect the
gas line. (Gas connections ay also be ade by
taking out the knockout in the botto pan to allow
connection through the botto of the firebox.)
Note: This appliance and its individual shutoff valve ust be disconnected fro the gas supply piping syste during any
pressure testing of that syste at test pressures in excess of 1/2 psi (3.5 kPa). The appliance ust be isolated fro the
gas supply piping syste by closing its individual anual shutoff valve during any pressure testing of the gas supply
piping syste at test pressures equal to or less than 1/2 psi (3.5 kPa).

3. GAS PRESSURE
On both the standing pilot and the electronic ignition
gas valves, the inlet pressure and a anifold (outlet)
pressure tap are available on the face of the valve.
Pressure taps are i ediately upstrea of the gas
supply connection and accessible for test gauge
connection. Table 2 shows opti u gas pressure
infor ation. Consult your local gas co pany for
assistance in deter ining the proper orifice for you
altitude or refer to ANSI Z223.1-latest edition,
AppendixF.

Note: This appliance ust be electrically wired and
grounded in accordance with local codes or, in the
absence of local codes, with National Electric Code
ANSI/NFPA 70-latest edition or the Canadian Electric
Code CSA C22.1.
4. WIRING
Note: Optional Accessories Require ents: Wiring
for optional accessories should be done now to
avoid reconstruction.
CAUTION:
Label all wires prior to disconnection when
servicing controls. Wiring errors can cause
improper and dangerous operation. Verify
proper operation after servicing.
This standing pilot appliance does not require a
110VAC supply to operate. It is suggested that a 110V
junction box be installed with a switched outlet for the
optional fan and an always-powered outlet for the
optional re ote control.
Only heater-listed appliances ay be connected to a
ther ostat (not supplied). Use a ther ostat that is
co patible with a illivolt gas valve. See Figure 37.

WARNING!
This standing pilot appliance DOES NOT require a
110V AC supply for operation. Connecting the
appliance wall switch wires to 110V AC supply will
cause the appliance to malfunction and destroy the
valve and thermopile.

b. Electronic Ignition
1) This electronic ignition appliance requires a 110V AC supply to operate. It is suggested that a switched
110V junction box with two switched outlets be installed to power the optional re ote control and/or fan.
2) Only heater-listed appliances ay be connected to a ther ostat. If connecting a 24V ther ostat (not
supplied), disconnect the black wire fro the transfor er at the ignition control. Connect the ther ostat
wires between the ignition control and the black wire (fro transfor er). See Figure 38a.

c. Junction Box Wiring
We reco end you operate the two outlets on
separate circuits. This allows independent
operation of the appliance and fan. Independent
operation is obtained by using ini u 14-3
with ground Ro ex and separating the two
outlets by breaking out the tab as shown in
Figure39.
