MODEL ATS-AUST IS AUSTRALIAN GAS ASSOCIATION APPROVED FOR
NATURAL GAS OR PROPANE AS A BALANCED FLUE HEATER.
Refer to the appliance data plates for gas consumptions and pressures.
Installation of this appliance should only be carried out by an authorized person
in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. All relevant codes and regu-
lations laid down by the gas piping authorities, municipal building regulations,
electrical wiring regulations and the requirements of the AGA Gas Installation
Code must be observed.
This appliance and it's components are tested and safe when installed in accor-
dance with this Installation Manual. Report to your dealer any parts damaged in
shipment, specifically check glass condition. The gas logs and flue system com-
ponents are in separate packages. Read all instructions before starting installa-
tion and follow these instructions carefully during installation to ensure maxi-
mum benefit and safety. Failure to follow them will void your warranty and may
present a fire hazard.

num or stainless steel gas flue is used for both the
incoming combustion air and exhaust flue pipes. NO
OTHERFLUEINGSYSTEMSORCOMPONENTSMAY
BEUSED.Detailedinstallationinstructionsareincluded
with each flue termination kit and should be used in
conjunction with this manual.
HORIZONTAL FLUEING
ThefluesystemonthismodelCANNOT be terminated
horizontally.
VERTICAL FLUEING
The flue pipes MUST be connected to the proper col-
lars on the unit AND the exhaust flue pipe MUST be
connected to the termination cap or the unit will not
operate. The combustion air flue pipe MUST be con-
nected to the termination cap.
NOTE: The minimum vertical rise (exhaust flue) is
14feet (3.5M) and themaximumvertical rise is40feet
(10M).Thesedimensionsaremeasuredfromthestart-
ing collars of the unit to the end of the last section of
flue pipe (See dimension V in Figure 3).
A vertical flue termination system installed on this
model will include one (1) length of 3-inch (76mm)
flexibleflue pipefor the combustion air, one (1) length
of3-inch(76mm) flexible flue pipeforthe exhaust, one
(1)pipe-to-cap adaptor, and one(1) SLK-991DAVerti-
calTermination Kit.
1.1 INTRODUCTION
This model is designed to operate with all combustion
airbeing siphoned from the outsideof the building and
all exhaust gases expelled to the outside of the build-
ing. This model is designed to be installed in a ma-
sonry fireplace or factory built fireplace. These units
CANNOTberecessed inside combustible construction.
Minimum dimensions of the masonry or factory-built
fireplaceinto which these models canbe installed, are
321/8-inches(816mm)widthx131/2 -inches (343mm)
depth x 20 1/2 inches (521mm) height.
WARNING: THISUNITISNOT FORUSE WITHSOLID
FUEL.
These units MUST use the flue termination described
in the flueing section of the manual.
Thecontrol system forthese model area millivolt type.
It consists of a gas control valve/variable regulator, a
standingpilot/thermopile/thermocouple,apiezoignitor,
and an ON/OFF switch. The controls are located be-
hind the lower grille. Access to the controls is gained
by rotating the grille up. ON/OFF switch is located on
the front surround. See Figure 1.
Minimuminletgas supply pressure forpurposeof input
adjustmentis 4.5 inches w.c.(1.13kPa)for natural gas
and 11 inches w.c. (2.75kPa) for propane. Manifold
(outlet) pressures should be set at 3.2 inches w.c.
(.80kPa) for natural gas models and 9.6 inches w.c.
(2.40kPa) forpropane models.
Inplanning the installation for theinsert it is necessary
to determine where the unit is to be installed, and
whetheroptional accessories (wallswitch, thermostat,
or remote control) are desired. Gas supply piping
should also be planned. Model ATS-AUST has a fac-
tory installed fan.
This model is designed to be installed in a masonry or
factory-builtfireplace.Theseparate3-inch(76mm)com-
bustion air and exhaust pipes must be run up through
the chimney and terminated vertically. Horizontal flue
terminations MUST NOT be done.
Beforestartinginstallationoffluekits,theinstaller should
read the Gas Fireplace Instructions and the Flue Kit
Instructions to ensure that a proper flue installation is
completed.
ConsultyourlocalBuilding Codes before beginningthe
installation.

1.2.2 CONNECTING THE FLUE PIPE
NOTE: The damper of the masonry or factory-
built chimney may have to be removed to allow
installation of the flexible-flue pipe.
Installthe3-inch(76mm)flexiblefluepipesdownthrough
the chimney. Remove the starting collar bracket from
the top of the unit. See Figure 4. Attach and secure
the bottom ends of the flex pipes to the starting collar
bracket with 3 plated sheetmetal screws on each col-
lar. Slide the gas insert into place, and position any
excess flex flue pipe back up into the chimney. Re-
attachthe collar bracketto the unit. There are twoend
tabs bent down from the top of the unit into the fan air
passageway. After the collar bracket is re-attached,
bendthe tabs upward usinga long screwdriverorsimi-
lar tool. The tabs will bend up behind the lances and
hold the collar bracket from sliding backwards.
Attach the pipe-to-cap adaptor to the termination cap
andto the topof the flexible fluepipe and setthe cap in
place at the top of the chimney. See Figures 4 and 5.
CAUTION: To avoid downdrafts and/or cold air
problems, it is recommended to seal off the area
between the termination cap and the top of the
solid-fuel chimney opening into which the flue cap
has been installed.
WARNING: A 12-inch (305mm) minimum chim-
ney and/or flue height above the roof top is neces-
sary in the interest of safety. See Figure 7.
NOTE: THIS ALSO PERTAINS TO VERTICAL
FLUE SYSTEMS INSTALLED ON THE OUTSIDE OF
THE BUILDING.
1.3 CONNECTING THE GAS SUPPLY
Thegas isintroduced to the appliance onthe left hand
side. See Figure 8. After the gas pipe installation is
complete,check carefully allgas connections for leaks
withasoap solution. DO NOTUSEANOPENFLAME.
NOTE: THE GAS SUPPLY LINE SHOULD BE
PURGED OF ANY TRAPPED AIR PRIOR TO THE
FIRST FIRING OF THE UNIT. FIGURE 8

3. Run the low voltage lead wires up the back of the
right side of the surround and secure them with the
threewireties found there. Reconnect thelowvolt-
age wires to the short wires of the ON/OFF switch.
4. Remove and retain the four surround attachment
screws at the corners of the face of the unit. See
Figure9.
5. Slidethesurroundagainstthefaceoftheunit,align-
ing the holes in upper and lower, right and left cor-
ners and secure the surround to the unit with the
attachmentscrews.
NOTE: PLACE THE THREE INSULATION PIECES
INTO THE CAVITIES AT THE BACK OF THE SUR-
ROUND BEFORE POSITIONING THE INSERT INTO
THE FACTORY-BUILT OR MASONRYFIREPLACE.
THIS INSULATION WILL HELP SEAL FOR COLD
AIR LEAKS.
1.4 FAN
ModelATS-AUSThasa factory installedFan, Junction
Box,variable speed Rheostat Control Switch,andTem-
perature Sensor Switch for the fan. The fan, tempera-
ture sensor switch, and junction box are located be-
hindthelowergrille. Toprovidethe240VACneededat
the Junction Box, simply plug the 3-prong grounded
cordintoa3-pronggrounded240VAC walloutlet. This
cord exits the unit at the lower right hand corner.
1.5 INSTALLING THE SURROUND
NOTE: REMOVEFRONT TRIM DOOR ANDGLASS
DOOR ASSEMBLIES FROM THE INSERT BEFORE
SURROUNDINSTALLATION.
1. Findthecoiledlow voltagewiresandON/OFFswitch
attached to outer right side of the insert. See Figure 9.
2. DisconnecttheON/OFFswitch from the lowvoltage
wireleads,andinsert the short wiresof theON/OFF
switch through the hole at the upper right corner of
thesurround andpushthebackof theswitchthrough
the hole - it will be retained in the hole.

LOG PLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS
Step1. PlaceLogNumber1back against the air intake passageinthebackofthe box. Slide the logleft
until it contacts the metal bracket protruding on the left side of the air intake. Drive a wood
screw through the hole in this bracket and into the log to positively locate.
Step2. PlaceLog Number 2withthe flat sidefacing the rearon the left sideof the grate.Push the right
side of the log back so it rests against the tab on the grate. Position the log so it rests against
the log bracket at the left side of the firebox. Drive a wood screw through this bracket and into
lognumber2.
Step3. Place Log Number 3 with it's flat side down between the rear log and the front of the grate, on
the right side. Position the log so it rests against the log bracket at the right side of the firebox
and the tab on the fourth bar of the grate. Secure this log with another screw.
Step 4. PlaceLog Number4withitsbottom in front of thethirdandfourth bars of the grate. Positionthe
splitendofthelog on the top ofthe rearleft side. Theinsideforkshouldrestagainst the rear log
location bracket. Tie this log to the rear log with a screw at the location marked "X".

1.6 FINISHING
Figure11 showstheminimumvertical and correspond-
ingmaximumhorizontaldimensionsofmantelsorother
combustibleprojections above thegas heater.
1.7 LOG INSTALLATION
Carefully remove the log package from the fireplace
and the logs from their package. Handle logs gently.
Place the logs in the fireplace by following the steps
shownin Figure 10.
Replace the glass door and trim door previously re-
moved prior to lighting the unit. Be certain the gas
logsare properly positioned.

1.8 INSTALLER TESTING
Thespace heater must be testedand be operating ac-
cording to manufacturers specifications prior to the in-
staller leaving the site. Note: the tips of the flames
shouldnever hit the top ofthe firebox after the unithas
warmed up. Please contact your dealer or a qualified
serviceperson to replaceinjector or adjust valve.
Upon completing the gas line connection, a small
amountof air willbe in the lines. Whenfirst lighting the
pilot light, it will take a few minutes for the lines to
purgethemselves of this air. Once the purgingiscom-
plete,the pilot and burnerwilllight and operateasindi-
cated in the Lighting Instructions.
Subsequentlightsoftheappliancewillnotrequiresuch
purging.
CAUTION: DURING THE INITIAL PURGINGAND
SUBSEQUENT LIGHTING'S, NEVER ALLOW THE
GAS VALVE CONTROL KNOB TO REMAIN DE-
PRESSED IN THE "PILOT" POSITION WITHOUT
PUSHING THE RED IGNITOR BUTTON AT LEAST
ONCEEVERY SECOND.

To obtain proper operation, it is imperative that the pi-
lot and main burner flame characteristics are steady,
notlifting or floating. Typically, the 3/8-inch(10mm) at
thepilot generator should beengulfedinthepilotflame.
(Figure12).

Proper gas log positioning is shown in Figure 10.

2.0 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
The control system for these models is a millivolt type.
It consists of a gas control valve/variable regulator, a
standing pilot assembly, a thermopile, a piezo ignitor,
and an ON/OFF rocker switch. The controls are lo-
catedinthelowercompartment behind the lower grille.
Access to this compartment is gained by rotating the
grille up. See Figure 1.
WARNING: DONOT CONNECT 240VAC TOTHE
GASCONTROLVALVE OR CONTROLWIRING SYS-
TEM OF THIS UNIT.
Thegas control systemiswiredsothethermopile, when
heatedwith thepilotlight,willprovide approximately350
to 500 millivolts. This activates the gas control valve.
SeeFigure14for appliance wiring diagram.
Whenlitforthe first time, theappliance willemitaslight
odor for an hour or two. This is due to paint and lubri-
cantsused in themanufacturing process. Additionally,
for the first few minutes after each lighting, vapor may
condenseand fogtheglassand theflamesmaybeblue.
Afterafewminutesthismoisturewilldisappearandwithin
15-30minutes the flames shouldbecome yellow.
The heater may produce a noise, caused from metal
expansionandcontractionasitheatsupandcoolsdown.
This noise is similar to one that a furnace heat duct
may produce and does not affect the operation or lon-
gevity of the heater.

A. Thisappliance has apilot. When lighting thepilot,

WHAT TO DO IF YOU SMELL GAS
• Do not try to light any appliance.
• Do not touch any electric switch; do not use any
phoneinyour building.
• Immediatelycallyourgassupplierfromaneighbor’s
phone. Follow the gas supplier’s instructions.
C. Useonlyyour hand to pushinorturn the gas con-
trolknob.Neverusetools.Iftheknobwillnotpush
inorturnbyhand,don’ttry to repair it. Call a quali-
fiedservice technician. Forced orattemptedrepair
may result in a fire or explosion.
D. Do not use this appliance if any part has been
under water. Immediately call a qualified service
techniciantoinspect the appliance andtoreplace
anypartofthegascontrolsystemwhichhasbeen
underwater.

2.1 SAFETY AND LIGHTING
INFORMATION
Follow Section 2.2 SAFETY INFORMATION and 2.3
LIGHTING INSTRUCTIONS tolight theappliance.
By design, the flame pattern will not be identical from
unit to unit. Additionally, flame pattern may vary de-
pendingon installation type andweather conditions.
NOTE:THE TIPS OFTHEFLAMES SHOULD NEVER
HIT THE TOPOF THE FIREBOX.

1. "STOP!" Readthesafetyinformationonprevious

2. To access controls, open the bottom grille.
3. Turnthevalvecontrolknobtothe"OFF"position.
To do this, you must turn the knob clockwise
tothe"Pilot"position,andthenpress
inandcontinueturningclockwise to
the "OFF" position.

force.
4. WAITFIVE(5) MINUTESTOCLEAROUTANY
GAS. Then smell for gas, including near the
floor. Ifyouthensmellgas,STOP! Follow"B"
in the safety information above. If you don't
smell gas, go to the next step.
5. Thepilotshouldnotrequireaccessingforlighting
purposes. The pilot is located inside the
combustion chamber. If it is necessary to
access the pilot, follow the instructions in
Section5.1and5.4forglassdoorremovaland
replacement.
2.3 LIGHTING INSTRUCTIONS
THERMOCOUPLE THERMOPILE
6. To put the control in the pilot position, turn the
control knob counter-clockwise to
the "Pilot" position.
7. Tolightthepilotdepressthecontrolknobandthen
depress the red piezo button until it makes a
clickingsound. Itmaybenecessarytorepeatthis
step. If the pilot does not light after 10 seconds,
gobacktostep3. Thecontrolknobshouldbeheld
downforaMINUTEafterpilotignition.
• If the control knob does not pop out when
released, STOP-shut off the gas supply to
theheater controlvalve,and IMMEDIATELY
callyour servicetechnician or gas supplier.
• Ifthe pilot willnot stay lit after twotries, turn
the control knob to the "OFF" position and
callyour servicetechnician or gas supplier.
8. Afterthepilothasbeenlit,theburnercanbeturned
onby turning the knob counter-clockwise
tothe"ON"position. FliptheON/OFF
switch to the "ON" position.
9. Close the bottom grille.
LIGHTING INSTRUCTIONS
TO TURN OFF GAS APPLIANCE
1. Turn ON/OFF switch to "OFF".
2. Openthebottom grille.
3. Turnthevalvecontrolknobclockwise
to the "Pilot" position, then depress knob and
continue turning to "OFF" position.
4. Close the bottom grille.

2.4 FAN OPERATION
The accessory fan is wired in series with a speed con-
trol switch and a temperature sensor switch. Set the
speed control to an "ON" position and light the heater.
The temperature sensor switch will automatically start
the fan when the switch warms up—and stop the fan
when it cools down. You can manually stop the fan by
turning the speed control switch to "OFF". See Figure
15for fan wiring diagram.
3.0 SERVICING AND MAINTENANCE
A. HEATER SERVICING: Frequencyof heater servic-
ing will depend upon use and type of installation.
B. IMPORTANT: TURNOFFGASBEFORE SERVIC-
INGAPPLIANCE. IT IS RECOMMENDED THATA
COMPETENTSERVICETECHNICIANPERFORM
SERVICE CHECK-UPS AT THE BEGINNING OF
EACHHEATING SEASON.
C. Theapplianceandflue systemshouldbeinspected
before initial use and at least annually by a quali-
fiedfieldserviceperson.
D. Inspect the external flue cap on a regular basis to
make sure that no debris is interfering with the air
flow.
E. Keep the control compartment, logs, and burner
areasurroundthelogscleanbyvacuumingorbrush-
ing at least twice a year.
CAUTION: THELOGSGETVERYHOT-HANDLE
ONLYWHENCOOL.

F. The glass door should be cleaned using a house-
holdglass cleaner. DO NOT handleor attemptto
clean the glass when it is HOT.
G. In order to properly clean the burner and pilot as-
sembly, turnoffthegas to theunit and removethe
logsexposingtheburnerandpilotassembly. Clean
all foreign materials from top of burner. Check to
make sure that the burner orifice is clean.
Visually inspect the pilot periodically. Brush or blow
away any dust or linen accumulations. If the pilot ori-
fice is plugged, disassembly may be required to re-
moveany foreign materialsfrom the orificeor tubing.
Whentheapplianceis put back inservice checkburner
flamepatterns withFigure 13.
To obtainproperoperation, it isimperativethat the pilot
and main burner flame characteristics are steady, not
lifting or floating. Typically, the top 3/8-inch (9.5m) at
thepilotgenerator should be engulfedinthe pilot flame
(Figure12).
3.1 REMOVAL OF COVERS FOR
SERVICING
1. ControlCompartmentGrille
• Rotate the bottom grille up to access the gas
controls.
2. DressGuard and Glass Door
• Lift the front dress guard up and out away from
theappliance side surrounds. Replace thedress
guardwhenservicing is complete.
• Rotate the three spring latch eye-bolts, at the
top of the glass door, releasing the glass frame.
Carefullylifttheglassdoorupandoutawayfrom
theappliance.
3.2 REMOVAL OF COMPONENTS
FOR SERVICE
1. Burner
• Carefully lift up and remove the log set, log grate,
andrefractory.
• Unscrewthebracketsatbothendsoftheburnerand
slide the burner to the right away from the burner
orifice.
2. Pilot Assembly/Ignition System
• Removethe log set, loggrate, and refractory.
• Disconnectthe gas supply tubefrom the underside
ofthepilot burner.
• Disconnecttheelectrodewire from the piezoignitor
(foundadjacenttothe gas control valve).
• Unscrew the pilot assembly bracket and remove.
NOTE: When removing the pilot assembly, care-
fullypulltheelectrodewireupthroughthegrommeted
hole in the base pan.
3.3 PARTS REPLACEMENT
1. Fan
• Unplugthepowercord.
• Removetheelectricalcoverplatefromthelowerright
handsideoftheheater. Loosentheretainingscrews
on the wire connector to disconnect the fan wires.
Discount earth wire from junction box stud.
• Slidethefan out the frontofthelower controls com-
partment.
NOTE:Theglasspanelmustberemoved BEFORE
fanis removed.
2. FanSpeedControl
• Disconnect the wires from the fan speed control
switch,pullofftheknob,andremovethenutholding
the speed control to the bracket.
3. TemperatureSensor
• Disconnectthewiresfrom the fan temperaturesen-
sor switch and remove the nut holding the switch
bracket onto the side of the firebox.
4. Glass Panel
• Toreplacethe glass door, place thebottomedge in
thebottom mountingbrackets. Push glass against
unit and latch the eye-bolts into the brackets. Ro-
tate the eye-bolts to secure.
3.4 ADJUSTMENTS AND
REPLACEMENT PARTS
Adjustmentsand replacement parts for thisappliance
should only be done by a qualified service person. A
wiringdiagramfor the appliance isshowninSECTION
2.0OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS. Areplacement part
table is shown in SECTION 4.0 of this manual.

3.5 TROUBLE SHOOTING - ATS-AUST
With proper installation and maintenance, your new Gas Heater should provide years of trouble-free service. If
youdo experience aproblem, refer to theTroubleShooting Guide below.Thisguide will assista qualified service
person in the diagnosis of problems and the corrective action to be taken.
SYMPTOM
I. Spark Ignitor will not light
pilot after repeated trigger-
ing of red button.
II. Pilot will not stay lit after
carefully following lighting
instructions.
POSSIBLECAUSE
A. Defective ignitor (no spark at
electrode).
B. Defective pilot or misaligned
electrode(spark at electrode).
C. No gas or low gas pressure.
D. No L.P. in tank.
A. Defectivethermocouple.
CORRECTIVEACTION
1. Checkforspark atelectrodeand
pilot; if no spark and electrode
wire is properly connected, re-
placeignitor.
1. Using a match, light pilot. If pi-
lot lights, turn off pilot and trig-
gerthe red button again. Ifpilot
lights, an improper gas/air mix-
turecausedthebadlightingand
a longer purge period is recom-
mended. If pilot will not light -
checkgasat electrode and pilot
- should be 1/8 inch (3.2mm) to
haveastrong spark.
If OK, replace pilot.
1. Check unit's shut-off valve and
remote shut off valves from
heater. Usually there is a valve
near the main. There can be
morethanone(1)valvebetween
theheater and main.
2. Lowpressurecanbecaused by
a variety of situations such as a
bentline, too narrow diameterof
pipe or even low line pressure.
Check for kinked lines. If none,
consultwith plumberorgassup-
plier.
1. Check L.P. (propane) tank. Re-
fill the fuel tank.
1. Checkthat pilot flameimpinges
onthermocouple. Clean and/ or
adjust pilot for maximum flame
impingement.
2. Ensure that the thermocouple
connection at the gas valve is
fullyinsertedandtight(handtight
plus 1/4 turn).

3. Disconnect the thermocouple
from the valve, place one milli-
voltmeter lead wire onthetip of
thethermocouple and the other
meter lead wire on the thermo-
couple copper lead. Start the
pilotand hold thevalve knob in.
If the millivolt reading is less
than15mv, replace the thermo-
couple.
1. If thermocouple is producing
more than 15 millivolts, replace
faultyvalve.
1. Check"on-off"switch and wires
for proper connections. Place
jumperwires acrossterminalsat
switch-if burner comes on, re-
place defective switch. If OK,
place jumper wires across
switchwiresatgasvalve-ifburner
comes on, wires are faulty or
connectionsarebad.
1. If the pilot flame is not close
enoughphysicallytothethermo-
pile, adjust the pilot flame.
2. Be sure the wire connections
from the thermopile at the gas
valveterminalsaretightandthe
thermopile is fully inserted into
the pilot bracket.
3. Checkthethermopilewithamil-
livoltmeter. Takethe readingat
TH-TP& TPterminalsofthegas
valve. The meter should read
325 millivolts minimum, while
holding the valve knob de-
pressedin thepilotposition,with
the pilot lit, and the ON/OFF
switch in the OFF position. Re-
placethefaultythermopile if the
reading is below the specified
minimum.

CORRECTIVEACTION
WiththepilotintheONposition,
disconnectthethermopileleads
from the valve. Take a reading
at the thermopile leads. The
readingshould be 325 millivolts
minimum. Replacethe thermo-
pile if the reading is below the
minimum.
1. Turn valve knob to “ON”. Place
ON/OFF switch to “ON”. Check
withmillivoltmeter at thermopile
terminals.Millivoltmeter should
readgreaterthan100m.v. If the
reading is okay and the burner
does not come on, replace the
gasvalve.
1. Checkburnerorificeforstoppage
andremove.
1. Follow corrective action in A.1
above;checkswitchandwiring.
Replacewhere defective.
1. Clean and adjust pilot flame for
maximum flame impingement on
