TO FOLLOW these installation instructions may
result in a possible fire hazard and will void the

Prior to the first firing of the fireplace, READ the
Using Your Fireplace section of the Owners Guide.
DO NOT USE this appliance if any part has been
under water. Immediately CALL a ualified
service technician to inspect the unit and to
replace any part of the control system and any
gas control which has been under water.
THIS UNIT IS NOT FOR USE WITH SOLID FUEL.
Installation and repair should be PERFORMED
by a ualified service person. The appliance and
venting system should be INSPECTED before
initial use and at least annually by a professional
service person. More fre uent cleaning may be
re uired due to excessive lint from carpeting,
bedding material, etc. It is IMPERATIVE that the
units control compartment, burners, and
circulating air passageways BE KEPT CLEAN
to provide for ade uate combustion and ventilation
air.
Always KEEP the appliance clear and free from
combustible materials, gasoline, and other
flammable vapors and li uids.

NEVER OBSTRUCT the flow of combustion and
ventilation air. Keep the front of the appliance
CLEAR of all obstacles and materials for servicing
and proper operations.
Due to the high temperature, the appliance should
be LOCATED out of traffic areas and away from
furniture and draperies. Clothing or flammable
material SHOULD NOT BE PLACED on or near
the appliance.
Children and adults should be ALERTED to the
hazards of high surface temperature and should
STAY AWAY to avoid burns or clothing ignition.
Young children should be CAREFULLY
SUPERVISED when they are in the same room
as the appliance.
These units MUST use one of the vent systems
described in the Installing the Insert section of
the Installers Guide. NO OTHER vent systems
or components MAY BE USED.
This gas fireplace and vent assembly MUST be
vented directly to the outside and MUST NEVER
be attached to a chimney serving a separate solid
fuel burning appliance. Each gas appliance MUST
USE a separate vent system. Common vent
systems are PROHIBITED.
INSPECT the external vent cap on a regular basis
to make sure that no debris is interfering with the
air flow.
DO NOT USE abrasive cleaners on the glass door
assembly. DO NOT ATTEMPT to clean the glass
door when it is hot.
Turn off the gas before servicing this appliance. It
is recommended that a ualified service
technician perform an appliance check-up at the
beginning of each heating season.
Any safety screen or guard removed for servicing
must be replaced before operating this appliance.

The Heat-N-Glo fireplace models discussed in this Installers
Guide have been tested to certification standards and listed
by the applicable laboratories.

Installation Codes
The fireplace installation must conform to local codes. Before
installing the fireplace, consult the local building code agency
to ensure that you are in compliance with all applicable
codes, including permits and inspections. In the absence of
local codes, the fireplace installation must conform to the
National Fuel Gas Code ANSI Z223.1 (in the United States)
or the CAN/CGA-B149 Installation Codes (in Canada). The
appliance must be electrically grounded in accordance with
local codes or, in the absence of local codes with the National
Electric Code ANSI/NFPA No. 70 (in the United States), or
to the CSA C22.1 Canadian Electric Code (in Canada).
This model (natural gas and propane) can be installed in a
bedroom (in the United States) which has a total volume of
unconfined space appropriate to the particular installation.
Refer to the National Fuel Gas Code ANSI Z223.1/NFPA54
(current edition), the Uniform Mechanical Code (current
edition), and local Building Officials for the options allowed
in obtaining an effective bedroom volume of unconfined space.
This model (natural gas and propane) can be installed in a
bedroom (in Canada) if a thermostat (Model WH-STAT) is
installed with the unit. Consult local code authorities. Detailed
installation instructions for Model WH-STAT are included with
the kit.

High Altitude Installations
U.L. Listed fireplaces are tested and approved for elevations
from 0 to 2,000 feet in the U.S.A. and are tested and approved
for elevations from 0 to 4,500 feet in Canada.
When installing this fireplace at an elevation above 2,000
feet (in the United States), it may be necessary to decrease
the input rating by changing the existing burner orifice to a
smaller size. Input should be reduced four percent (4%) for
each 1,000 feet above sea level, unless the heating value of
the gas has been reduced, in which case this general rule
will not apply. To identify the proper orifice size, check with
the local gas utility.
When installing this fireplace at an elevation between 2,000
and 4,500 feet (in Canada), the input rating must be reduced
by ten percent (10%).
When installing this fireplace at an elevation above 4,500
feet (in Canada), check with local authorities. Consult your
local gas utility for assistance in determining the proper
orifice for your location.

Heat-N-Glo Gas Fi eplaces
These gas fireplaces are designed to operate with all ex-
haust gases expelled to the outside of the building. The vent
system for these fireplaces must be 8-inch Class A chim-
ney as shown in the venting section of this manual.
The information contained in this Installers Guide, unless
noted otherwise, applies to all models and gas control sys-
tems. Gas fireplace diagrams, including the dimensions, are
shown in this section.
P e-installation P epa ation
This gas fireplace and its components are tested to perform
only when installed in accordance with this Installers Guide.
Report to your dealer any parts damaged in shipment,
particularly the condition of the glass. Do not install any
unit with damaged, incomplete, or substitute parts.
WARNING: THESE FIREPLACES ARE FACTORY
EQUIPPED FOR NATURAL GAS ONLY. PRO-
PANE CONVERSION COMPONENTS AND IN-
STRUCTIONS ARE INCLUDED IN THE LPK-CFXT
PROPANE CONVERSION KIT. THIS CONVER-
SION MUST BE DONE IF YOU INTEND TO OP-
ERATE THE CFX-36T WITH PROPANE.
The vent system components are shipped in separate packages.
The gas logs are shipped with the unit and installed per log
instructions. Read all of the instructions before starting
the installation. Follow these instructions carefully
during the installation to ensure maximum safety and
benefit. Failure to follow these instructions will oid
the owners warranty and may present a fire hazard.

The Heat-N-Glo Warranty will be voided by, and Heat-N-Glo
disclaims any responsibility for, the following actions:
 Installation of any damaged fireplace or vent system com-
ponent.
 Modification of the fireplace or vent system.
 Installation other than as instructed by Heat-N-Glo.
 Improper positioning of the gas logs or the glass doors.
 Installation and/or use of any component part not manu-
factured and approved by Heat-N-Glo, not withstanding
any independent testing laboratory or other party approval of
such component part or accessory.
ANY SUCH ACTION MAY POSSIBLY CAUSE A FIRE HAZARD.
When planning a fireplace installation, its necessary to
determine:
Where the unit is to be installed.
The vent system configuration to be used.
Gas supply piping.
Electrical wiring.
Framing and finishing details.
Whether optional accessoriesdevices such as a remote
controlare desired.
If the fireplace is to be installed on carpeting or tile, or on any
combustible material other than wood flooring, the fireplace
should be installed on a metal or wood panel that extends
the full width and depth of the fireplace.

Negative P essu e Make-up Ai
Negati e Pressure Warning: When negative pressure is
present, an atmospherically vented fireplace may not
function properly and it may down draft. In the case of a
gas appliance, spillage of the combustion gases may occur.
This may create a dangerous carbon monoxide
situation in the house.

The causes of negative pressure to a house can include the
following:
 Stack effect in the building.
 Exhaust only appliances (mechanically and atmospheri-
cally vented).
 Inade uate make-up air (which is increasingly more
prevalent in new construction).
THIS UNIT DOES CONTAIN A HIGH TEMPERATURE
LIMIT SWITCH THAT WILL TURN OFF THE FIRE-
PLACE IF THE FLUE DAMPER IS NOT OPEN OR IN
A NEGATIVE PRESSURE SITUATION.
Negative Air Pressure Within the Structure:
This fireplace will operate correctly only if ade uate ventila-
tion is provided to allow proper draft to the fireplace system.
Heat-N-Glo assumes no responsibility for the improper per-
formance of the fireplace system caused by inade uate draft
due to environmental conditions, down drafts, tight sealing
construction of the structure, or mechanical exhausting de-
vices which create a negative air pressure within the struc-
ture where the fireplace is located.
It is recommended that
all natural venting non-
air tight gas fireplaces
have outside air con-
nected to them. It is
also recommended that
the building be mechani-
cally or passively bal-
anced to allow atmo-
spherically vented appli-
ances, such as atmo-
spherically vented gas
fireplaces, to draft prop-
erly. If the home experi-
ences negative pressure
or is likely to experience
negative pressure, con-
nection to an outside air
source is mandatory.
Installing utside Make-up Air:
This unit is e uipped to accept outside air. It is RECOM-
MENDED that an AK-CFX air kit be used with this appli-
ance. The 4-inch (102mm) side collar for the air kit will
come mounted to the fireplace. See Figure 4.
This appliance also contains a make-up air damper which is
manually opened and closed from inside of the firebox. Pull
forward to open, push back to close. See Figure 4.
CAUTION: DO NOT OPERATE THE AIR DAMPER WHEN
UNIT IS HOT.

Connect the first chimney component to the flue outlet col-
lar. Look at top inside of the firebox to check that the chim-
ney is attached to the unit.
NOTE: It is always better to first attach a straight sec-
tion of chimney to the unit before attaching an elbow.
A oid using elbows in the chimney system if possible.
Using ffsets and Returns
To bypass any overhead obstructions, the chimney may be
offset using a 150 offset/return (HSL315) or a 300 offset/re-
turn (HSL330). An offset can be attached directly to the fire-
place followed by a return or a chimney section(s) can be
used between the offset and return. A maximum of 2 - 300
offset/return pairs or 4 - 150 offset/return pairs can be used
in the system if necessary, but the TOTAL MAXIMUM ver-
tical offset for the system is 15-feet. The TOTAL MINIMUM
vertical rise for the system is 10-feet and the TOTAL
MAXIMUM vertical rise for the system is 60-feet. See Figure 5.

nécessaire, mais le dévoiement vertical TOTAL MAXIMAL
du système est de 457cm. La longueur verticale TOTALE
MINIMALE du système est de 305cm et la longueur verticale

Perform the following steps to determine the correct chimney
component combination for your particular installation.
1. Measure how far the chimney needs to be shifted to
enable it to avoid the overhead obstacle. See Figure 6
dimension A.
2. After determining the offset dimension, refer to Table 1
on the following page, and find the A dimension closest
to but not less than the distance of shift needed for your
installation.
3. The B dimensions that coincide with the A dimensions
represent the re uired vertical clearance that is needed
to complete the offset and return.
4. Read across the chart and find the number of chimney
sections re uired and the model number of those
particular chimney parts.
5. Whenever the chimney penetrates a floor/ceiling, a firestop
spacer must be installed.
Example: Your A dimension from Figure 6 is 14 1/2. Using
Table 1, the dimension closest to but not less than 14 1/2
is 14 5/8 using a 300 offset/return. It is then determined
from the table that you would need 33 1/16 (Dimension B)
between the offset and return. The chimney components
that best fit your application are two HSL312s.

The Gas Cont ol System
WARNING: THIS UNIT IS NOT FOR USE

These models use a Direct S ark Ignition (DSI) gas con-
trol system.
Direct Spark Ignition (DSI) System
The DSI system includes a 110VAC control valve, electronic
module, and spark ignitor/flame sensor.
WARNING: 110-120 VAC MUST BE WIRED TO
THE FIREPLACE JUNCTION BOX IN A DSI
SYSTEM.

Step 7 The Gas Supply Line
NOTE: Ha e the gas supply line installed in accordance
with local building codes by a qualified installer
appro ed and/or licensed as required by the locality.
NOTE: Before the first firing of the fireplace, the gas
supply line should be purged of any trapped air.
NOTE: Consult local building codes to properly size
the gas supply line leading to the 1/2 inch
(13mm) hook-up at the unit.
This gas fireplace is designed to accept a 1/2 inch
(13mm) gas supply line. To install the gas supply line:
 A listed (and State of Massachusetts approved) 1/2 inch
(13mm) tee-handle manual shut-off valve and a listed
flexible gas connector are connected to the 1/2 inch
(13mm) inlet of the control valve. NOTE: If substituting
for these components, please consult local codes for
compliance.
 The gas line may be run from either side of the fireplace
provided the hole in the outer wrap does not exceed 2
inches in diameter and it does not penetrate the airtight
firebox.
 The gap between the supply piping and gas access hole
can be plugged with non-combustible insulation to pre-
vent cold air infiltration.
 Locate the gas line access hole in the outer casing of
the fireplace.
 Access the fireplace controls compartment, insert the
gas supply line through the gas line hole, and connect
it to the shut-off valve.
 When attaching the pipe, support the control so that
the lines are not bent or torn.
 After the gas line installation is complete, use a soap
solution to carefully check all gas connections for leaks.
WARNING: DO NOT USE AN OPEN FLAME TO
CHECK FOR GAS LEAKS.
 At the gas line access hole, use insulation to re-pack
the space around the gas pipe.
 Insert insulation from the outside of the fireplace and
pack the insulation tightly to totally seal between the
pipe and the outer casing.
Étape 7 Conduit à gaz
REMARQUE : Le conduit gaz doit être installé
conformément aux codes de construction locaux.
L'installation doit être effectuée par un technicien
qualifié et/ou muni d'une licence de manière à re-
specter les règlements municipaux.
REMARQUE: A ant dallumer le foyer pour la première
fois, toutes les bulles dair doi ent être é acuées du
conduit à gaz.
REMARQUE: Consultez les codes de construction
locaux pour choisir correctement le diamètre du
conduit à gaz sacheminant ers le raccord de 13mm
du foyer.
Ce foyer à gaz est conçu pour accepter un conduit à gaz
de 13mm. Pour installer le conduit à gaz:
 Un robinet manuel à poignée en T de 13 mm (1/2 po)
homologué (et approuvé par l'État du Massachusetts)
et un tuyau à gaz flexible homologué sont branchés à
l'orifice d'admission de la valve de commande de 13 mm
(1/2 po). REMARQUE : Veuillez consulter les codes
locaux pour vous assurer ue les éléments de
remplacement sont réglementaires.
 Le conduit à gaz peut arriver dun côté ou de lautre du
foyer, à condition ue lorifice prati ué dans lextérieur
du foyer ne dépasse pas 50,8mm de diamètre et ue
le conduit ne pénètre pas dans le foyer herméti ue.
 Lécart entre la tuyauterie dapprovisionnement et lorifice
daccès du conduit à gaz peut être bouché à laide disolant
non combustible pour empêcher linfiltration dair froid.
 Repérez lorifice daccès du conduit à gaz dans la paroi
extérieure du foyer.
 Ouvrez la grille inférieure du foyer, insérez le conduit à
gaz dans lorifice daccès du conduit à gaz et branchez-
le au robinet.
 Pour brancher le tuyau, soutenez la commande afin ue
les conduits ne soient pas tordus ou rompus.
 Une fois linstallation du conduit à gaz terminée, utilisez
une solution savonneuse pour détecter des fuites sur
tous les raccords de gaz.
AVERTISSEMENT: NUTILISEZ PAS DE
FLAMME NUE POUR DÉTECTER DES FUITES
DE GAZ.
 Au niveau de lorifice daccès du conduit à gaz, utilisez de
lisolant afin de regarnir lespace autour du conduit à gaz.
 Insérez lisolant par
lextérieur du foyer et
tassez-le bien afin de
boucher herméti uement
lespace entre le tuyau
et la paroi extérieure.
