TheHOBOMXGatewayprovidesnearreal‐timedatamonitoringformostMXseriesloggersby
automaticallytransmittingloggeddatatotheHOBOlink®website.Youcaneasilysetupthe
gatewaywiththeHOBOmobile®apponyourphoneortablet.Onceconfigured,thegateway
usesBluetooth®LowEnergy(BLE)toregularlycheckformeasurementsfromupto100loggers
withinrange.LoggermeasurementsarethenuploadedfromthegatewayviaEthernetorWiFi
toHOBOlink,whereyoucansetupautomaticemailortextalarmnotifications,displayyour
datainadashboard,andexportdataforfurtheranalysis.Note:AllMXloggersexceptthe
MX100seriesaresupportedbythegateway.ContactOnsetTechnicalSupportforquestionson
MX100loggercompatibilitywiththegateway.

Followthesestepstosetupthegatewayforthefirsttime.
1. DownloadtheHOBOmobileapp.
GototheAppStore®orGooglePlay™anddownload
HOBOmobiletoyourphoneortablet.Opentheappand
enableBluetoothinthedevicesettingsifprompted.
2. SetupHOBOlinksettingsinHOBOmobile.
a. TaptheDevicesiconandthentapGatewaysatthetop
ofthescreen.
b. IfyoudonotalreadyhaveaHOBOlinkaccount,tapthe
linktocreateoneorgotowww.hobolink.com.You’ll
receiveanemailtoactivatethenewaccount.Returnto
HOBOmobilewhendone.
c. InHOBOmobile,tapUseMXGateways(orgotoSettings
andthentapHOBOlink).
d. EnteryourHOBOlinkusernameandpasswordandtap
Done.(EnableUploadDataifyouarenotpromptedfor
theusernameandpassword.)
e. Select“fromaGateway”forthedefaultHOBOlink
uploadsetting.
3. Powerupthegateway.
a. InserttheappropriateplugforyourregionintotheAC
adapter.ConnecttheACadaptertothegatewayand
plugitin.
b. Waitforthegatewaytobootupandappearin
HOBOmobile.Whilethegatewaybootsup,theLEDon
thegatewaywillstartassolidyellowandthenswitchto
blinkingyellow.Itwilltake4to5minutesbeforethe
gatewayappearsinHOBOmobile.
4. Setupgatewaynetworksettings.
a. InHOBOmobile,tapDevicesandthentapGatewaysat
thetopofthescreen.Tapthegatewaytoconnecttoit.
Ifthegatewaydoesnotappear,makesureitis
completelypoweredupasdescribedinstep3and
withinrangeofyourphoneortablet.
b. TosetupWiFi:
i. TapNetworkSettings.
ii. TapWiFiandthenthearrowtoopenWiFiSettings.
iii. SelectUseCurrentWiFiNetworktouseyourphone
ortablet’sexistingWiFISSIDandthentypeyour
password.TapSave.
iv. Thegatewaywillautomaticallytestthenetwork
connectionaftersavingthesettings.Thecloudicon
inHOBOmobilewilldisplayagreencheckmark
oncethenetworksettingshavebeensuccessfully
configured.Ifamessageappearsintheapp
PluginAC

followtheinstructionsandremovethepowercord
andthenplugitbackinafteracoupleofseconds.If
thetestisnotsuccessfulandthisiconstillappears
,makesureallyoursettingsareentered
correctlyandsaved.
c. TosetupEthernet:
PluginanEthernetcable.Thenetworksettingsare
automaticallyconfiguredifyourEthernetconnectionis
usingDHCP(dynamicIPaddresses).Thecloudiconin
HOBOmobilewilldisplayagreencheckmark.
IfyourEthernetusesstaticIPaddressesandthisicon
appears:
i. TapNetworkSettings.
ii. TapEthernetandthenthearrowtoopenEthernet
Settings.
iii. DisableDHCP.
iv. TapIPAddress,SubnetMask,andRoutertoeditthe
addresses(consultyourNetworkAdministrator).
v. TapAddDNSServerandenteranaddress.Repeatif
necessary(theappcanstoreuptothreeDNSserver
addresses).
vi. TapSave.
5. Configurethegateway.
a. IfHOBOmobileisnotalreadyconnectedtothegateway,
tapDevicesandthentapthegatewaytoconnecttoit.
b. TapConfigure.
c. Enteranameforthegateway.Thegatewayserial
numberwillbeusedifnonameisentered.
d. TapStart.
6. Setupandstartloggers.
MXseriesloggersmustbeconfiguredtousethemwiththe
gateway.Ifanyofyourloggersarealreadylogging,youwill
needtoreconfigurethemasdescribedinthefollowing
steps.
Note:MX100seriesloggersarenotsupportedbythe
gateway.ContactOnsetTechnicalSupportforquestionson
MX100loggercompatibilitywiththegateway.
Toconfigurealoggerforusewiththegateway:
a. TapDevices,andthenLoggersatthetopofthescreen.
b. TaptheloggertoconnecttoitandthentapConfigure.
c. Makesure“fromaGateway”ischeckedunderUpload
DatatoHOBOlink.
d. Chooseotherloggersettingskeepinginmindthe
following:
Aloggingintervalof5minutesorslowerisoptimalfor
thegateway,althoughitcansupportalogginginterval
downto1minute(seeViewingDataUploadedfrom
theGatewayfordetails).
Ifyouselectaloggingintervalfasterthan1minute,the
dataloggedatthefasterratewillnotbeavailablefor
thegatewaytoupload.UseHOBOmobiletoreadout
theloggerandretrievethisdata.
Burstloggingandstatisticsarenotsupportedbythe
gateway.UseHOBOmobiletoreadouttheloggerand
retrievethisdata.
ForMX1104,MX1105,MX2200,MX2300,andMX2501
loggers,Bluetoothisautomaticallyenabledtoensure
regulargatewayuploadscanoccur.
ThegatewayusesBluetoothLowEnergyto
communicateovertheairwithloggerswithinrange.If
MX2200orMX2501loggersorthetopendofan
MX2001loggerisdeployedinwater,thegatewaywill
notbeabletocommunicatewiththem.
e. TapStart.SeetheHOBOmobileUser’sGuideat

usingHOBOmobile.
Thegatewaywillregularlycheckloggerswithinrangeand
uploaddatatoHOBOlink.SeeViewingDataUploadedfromthe
Gatewayfordetailsonworkingwithdata.
DeploymentandMountingGuidelines
Followtheseguidelineswhenselectingalocationtoplacethe
gateway:
ThegatewayrequiresACpowerandaninternet
connection.Selectalocationforthegatewaythatisnear
anACoutletandanEthernetport(ifusingEthernet)or
withinrangeofyourWiFirouter(ifusingWiFi).
Therangeforsuccessfulwirelesscommunicationbetween
thegatewayandloggersisapproximately30.5m(100ft)
withfullline‐of‐sight.Ifthereareobstaclesbetweenthe
gatewayandtheloggers,suchaswallsormetalobjects,
theconnectionmaybeintermittentandtherange
betweenloggersandthegatewaywillbedecreased.Test
therangebypositioningyourphoneortabletwhereyou
wanttodeploythegateway.Ifthephoneortabletcan
connecttoaloggerwithHOBOmobilefromthatlocation,
thenthegatewayshouldbeabletoconnecttothelogger
aswell.
Ifyouaremountingthegatewayonawallorotherflat
surface,mountthefaceofthegatewaytowardsthe
coverageareawiththelogoorientedhorizontallyas

shownbelowforoptimalsignalstrength.Alsomountaway
fromthecornerswherewallsmeetandabovethetallest
obstructionsintheroom.
Ifyouaremountingthegatewayonaceiling,placeiton
thelowestavailablemountingpointfacingdownwardsfor
optimalsignalstrength.AlsomountawayfromHVACducts
andbelowI‐beamsorsupportbeams.
Usetheenclosedmountingkittomountthegatewaytoa
flatsurface.Usetheself‐tappingscrewsandanchorsto
affixthegatewaymountingplatetoawallorceiling.
Ifyouaremountingthegatewayonawoodensurface,use
boththegatewaymountingplateandthemounting
bracketshownbelow.Placethegatewaymountingplate
overthemountingbracketsotheholesarealigned.Use
themachinescrewstoaffixitthesurface(youmayneed
todrillpilotholesinthesurfacefirst).
Oncethegatewaymountingplateisinplaceonthewallor
otherflatsurface,usethefourholesonthebackofthe
gatewaytoattachittothefourclipsonthemounting
plate.
ConnectingtotheGateway
Toconnecttothegatewaywithyourphoneortablet:
1. InHOBOmobile,tapDevicesandthentapGatewaysatthe
topofthescreen.
2. Tapthegatewayinthelisttoconnecttoit.
Ifthegatewaydoesnotappearinthelistorifitishaving
troubleconnecting,followthesetips:
Makesurethegatewayiswithinrangeofyourphoneor
tabletwhenconnectingtoit.Ifyourmobiledevicecan
connecttothegatewayintermittentlyorlosesits
connection,moveclosertothegateway,withinsightif
possible.Checkthegatewaysignalstrengthicon
inthe
apptomakesurethereisastrongsignalbetweenthe
phoneandthegateway.Themorebluebars,thestronger
thesignal.
Changetheorientationofyourphoneortablettoensure
theantennainyourdeviceispointedtowardthegateway
(refertoyourdevice’smanualfortheantennalocation).
Obstaclesbetweentheantennainthedeviceandthe
gatewaymayresultinintermittentconnections.
Waitafewminutesandthentrytoconnectagain.The
gatewaywillnotbedisplayedinHOBOmobilewhenitis
bootingorwhenanautomaticfirmwareupgradeis
underway.
IfyourecentlypoweredupthegatewayandtheLEDis
continuouslyflashing,butthegatewayisnotdisplayedin
HOBOmobile,thendisconnectthepowerfromthe
gatewayandplugitbackin.Thegatewayshouldthen
appearinHOBOmobileafteritpowersbackup.
Onceyourphoneortabletisconnectedtothegateway,you
cancheckhowmanyloggersareinrange.Youcanalsoselect
oneofthefollowingactions:
Configure.EnteragatewaynameandtapStart.
NetworkSettings.ChangetheEthernetorWiFisettings.
Whenthegatewayisconfigured,itisautomaticallylockedto
preventunauthorizedwirelessaccess.Pressthebuttonnextto
theLEDonthegatewayforatleast10secondstoresetor
unlockthegateway.
Thisiconindicatesthegatewayisconnectedtothe
internet.Thisiconindicatesthegatewayiscurrentlynot
connectedlikelyduetoatemporaryoutage.Iftheproblem
persistsorthisiconappears,connecttothegatewayand
checkyournetworksettingstomakesurenochangesare
necessary.

MonitoringtheGateway
AheartbeatisregularlysentfromthegatewaytoHOBOlinkto
makesurethegatewayisstillactive.Ifnoheartbeatissent
after15minutes,thenthegatewaystatuswillchangefromOK
tomissing.Thegatewaywillcontinuedownloadingtheloggers
evenifitisnotabletoconnecttoHOBOlink.Thedatawillbe
storedtemporarilyinthegatewayanduploadedthenexttime
itisabletoconnecttoHOBOlink.
TocheckthestatusofthegatewayinHOBOlink,clickDevices
andthenclickMXDevices.Eachgatewayislistedbynameand
serialnumberwiththestatusandthelasttimedatawas
uploadedwiththegateway.
Youcanalsosetupanalarmtonotifyyouviatextoremail
whenagatewayismissingorwhentheloggersthatarebeing
monitoredbythegatewayaremissing,trippedanalarm,or
havelowbatteries.
Tosetupagatewayalarm:
1. InHOBOlink,clickDevicesandthenclickMXDevices.
2. ClickConfigureGatewayAlarms.
3. ClickAddNewAlarm.
3. Selectagateway.
4. Selectthealarmsyouwanttoaddforthegateway:
Missinggateway.Agatewayhasnotsentaheartbeatto
HOBOlinkfor15minutes.
Missinglogger.Aloggerhasnotbeenfoundbythe
gatewayfor30minutes.
Loggeralarm.Aloggerbeingmonitoredbythegateway
hastrippedorclearedasensoralarm.
Loggerlowbattery.Aloggerbeingmonitoredbythe
gatewayhasalowbattery.
5. Selectwhetheryouwantgatewayalarmnotificationssent
viaemailortext.
6. Entertheemailaddressorcountrycodedestinationplus
cellnumber.
7. ClickSaveAlarms.
ViewingDataUploadedfromtheGateway
ArunninggatewayusesBluetoothtoregularlymonitorloggers
withinrangethathavebeenconfiguredforusewiththe
gateway.Newloggerdatareceivedbythegatewayisthen
uploadedviaWiFiorEthernettoHOBOlinkevery5minutes.
Tocheckwhenthelatestdatawasuploaded,clickDevicesand
thenMXDevices.IntheMXDevicestable,lookforthelogger
(byname,serialnumber,and/ormodelnumber)andcheckthe
lastsensorreadinglisted.Youcanalsoseethedateandtime
theloggerwasconfiguredandwhichgatewayuploadedthe
data.
ToviewloggerdatauploadedtoHOBOlinkfromthegateway:
Setupadashboardforreal‐timemonitoringofthe
conditionswheretheloggerislocated.
Exportthedatatoafile.
Setupadatadeliveryschedulesothatuploadeddatais
automaticallydeliveredtoyouviaemailorFTPona
scheduleyouspecify.
SeetheHOBOlinkHelpfordetailsonhowtosetupa
dashboard,exportdata,orcreateadatadeliveryschedule.
Notes:
Aloggingintervalof5minutesorslowerisoptimalforthe
gateway,althoughitcansupportaloggingintervaldown
to1minute.Iftheloggingintervalissetfrom1minuteup
to5minutes,theremaybeoccasionalmissingindividual
datapointsinexportedfiles.Boththegatewayandloggers
regularly“advertise”orsendoutBluetoothsignals.The
rateatwhichthesesignalsaresentmaydifferbetween
thegatewayandtheloggersandcanresultinoccasional
datapointsnotbeinguploaded.UseHOBOmobiletoread
outtheloggerandgenerateareportwithalldatapoints
forthecurrentdeployment.
Nodatawillbeuploadedforloggersconfiguredwith
loggingintervalsfasterthan1minute.Ifyourdeployment
requiresloggingfasterthan1minute,useHOBOmobileto
readouttheloggerandgenerateareportwiththisdata.
Burstloggingandstatisticsarenotsupportedbythe
gateway.Ifyouconfiguredtheloggerwiththesesettings,
useHOBOmobiletoreadouttheloggerandcreatea
reportwithanyburstloggingdataandstatistics.
IfnodataisappearinginHOBOlink,dothefollowing:
CheckthegatewaystatusinHOBOlink.Ifthegatewayis
missing,checktomakesureitispluggedin,thenetwork
settingsarecorrect,anditiswithinrangeoftheloggers.
Ifyoujustsetupagatewayandconfiguredloggers,itmay
takeafewminutesbeforedatabeginsappearingin
HOBOlink.WaitafewminutesandthencheckHOBOlink
again.
Makesuretheloggerwasconfiguredwith“froma
Gateway”selectedunderUploadDatatoHOBOlink.Ifyou
selected“fromHOBOlink”insteadof“fromaGateway,”
thendatawillonlybeuploadedtoHOBOlinkwhenyou
readouttheloggerwithyourphoneortablet.The
gatewaywillnotmonitortheloggeranduploaddatawhen
“fromHOBOlink”isselected.
CheckthatyouareloggedintothesameHOBOlink
accountthatyouusedtosetupthegatewayin
HOBOmobile.
Makesuretheloggershavestartedloggingandarenot
waitingforadelayedstartorapushbuttonstart.
Makesuretheloggerisnotdeployedinwater.The
gatewaycannotcommunicatewithloggerswhiletheyare
deployedinwater.
GatewayFirmwareUpdates
Occasionalautomaticfirmwareupdatesmaybenecessaryfor
thegateway.Whilethefirmwareupdateistakingplace,devices
willnotbeabletoconnecttothegatewayandnodatawillbe
uploadedtoHOBOlink.TheLEDonthegatewaywillblink
yellowwhilethefirmwareupdateisunderway.Theupdate
shouldonlylastafewminutesandthenthegatewaywill
resumenormaloperation.

ResettingtheGateway
Thereisaresetbuttononthebackofthegatewaynexttothe
Ethernetportasshownbelow.Youmaybedirectedtopress
thisbuttonbyOnsetTechnicalSupportifyouareexperiencing
problemswiththegateway.Refertothetablebelowforthe
actiontakenbythegatewaywhentheresetbuttonispressed
forvaryinglengthsoftime.
Whenyoupress
theresetbutton
likethis:Thegatewaydoesthis:
Quickpress,less
than2seconds
Softreboot.Thisrestartstheoperating
systemonthegatewaywithoutinterrupting
power.
Shortpress,
2–4seconds
Networkreset.Thisclearsallconnections
configuredbythegatewayandrequiresthe
buttontobepressedfor2to4seconds.To
aidthetimingofthenetworkreset,theLED
quicklyflashesyellowtoindicatethe
windowwhenthebuttonshouldbe
released.Whenthebuttonisreleased
duringthatwindow,theLEDwillquickly
flashgreentoconfirmthenetworkreset
operationhasbeentriggered.Ifyourelease
thebuttonafter4seconds,theLEDwill
returntothebehavioritdisplayedbefore
quicklyflashingyellow.Ifyoureleasethe
buttonbetween4and8seconds,noactions
(rebootorreset)areperformed.
Longpress,
10–15seconds
Hardreboot.Thisresetstheprocessorand
restartsthegatewayoperatingsystem.
Verylongpress,
greaterthan30
seconds(NOT
RECOMMENDED)
Factoryreset.
Important:Thisshouldnotbeperformed
unlessinstructedbyOnsetTechnical
Support.Factoryresetwillwipealldata
fromthegatewayandreinstallthe
operatingsystem.Ifthegatewayloses
powerduringthereinstallprocess,the
installationmightbecorruptedandthe
gatewayrenderedinoperable.Ifyou
performafactoryreset,donotremove
powerwhiletheLEDissolidyellow.In
addition,youmustinstallanEthernet
cableafterperformingafactoryreset,
evenifyourgatewayisnormally
configuredforWi‐Fi.TheEthernetcable
mustremaininstalledwiththegateway
powereduntilthereinstallationprocess
completes,whichmaytakeupto2hours.
