Ionic Liquid Type pH Electrode
9600-10D Instruction Manual
This manual describes the ionic liquid type pH electrode
9600-10D. Read this manual carefully, before using the
electrode.
This pH electrode uses a gelled ionic liquid (hereinafter
referred to as "IL"), Tributyl (2-methoxyethyl) phosphonium
bis (pentafluoroethanesulfonyl) amide, for the liquid junction
of the reference electrode. It keeps KCl from leaking into a
sample solution, and makes this pH electrode excellent in
accuracy, reproducibility and stability in pH measurement of
low-conductivity sample solutions as compared with the
conventional HORIBA pH electrodes. Moreover, it perfectly
suits pH measurement for the sample solutions that react
readily with KCl.
This electrode can be connected to a HORIBA pH meter (D-
10, D-20, D-50, F-10, F-20, F-50, and F-70 series).

About this electrode
Life span
If a calibration error occurs after appropriate cleaning of the
electrode, replace the electrode.
When the liquid junction is immersed in anaqueous
solution, the IL is dissolved into the solution (Solubility: 200
mol/L). When the amount of IL in the liquid junction drops
below a certain amount, the electrode can not work properly.
Only as a guide, an electrode has a life of approximately 1
year if the electrode is immersed into 25Cdeionized water
for 2 hours per day. The electrode life span depends on the
immersion conditions.
Features
Surfactants or heavy metal ions may cause
measurement errors. Refer to " Samples causing a
measurement error " (page 4).
Ions constituting the IL may react with components in a
sample. Refer to " Influence on samples " (page 4).
The color of the liquid junction may be changed, but this
does not affect the performance. Refer to " Change in
color of the liquid junction " (page 4).
Verification renewal for the Japanese Measurement Act
We recommend to check that the linearity of the relation
between the electrode potential and the pH value of the
measured solutions meets the standards of the Japanese
Measurement Act, according to " Appendix 1. Procedure for
This equipment conforms to the following standards:
RoHS: EN50581
9. Monitoring and control instruments
Broken glass
Broken glass may cause injury. The tip of the electrode is made of
glass. Handle it with care
linearity inspection " (page 4) before applying for verification
renewal. If the linearity does not meet the standards, the
electrode is close to the end of life.
Precautions
Sensor materials may be transferred into a sample due
to the sample properties or when immersed for a long
time. If the measured sample gets in contact with the
skin, wash away the sample with water or soap. After pH
measurement of a food, do not eat it.
Do not shock the electrode.
A cracked or broken electrode causes incorrect
measurement results. Replace such electrode with a
new one.
Make sure to use the electrode within the specified
operating temperature range.
Do not measure a sample that contains hydrofluoric
acid, which may corrode glass.
Organic solvents causes deterioration of the liquid
junction of the reference electrode. Avoid cleaning with
or measuring the organic solvents.
Avoid the continuous use of this electrode under the
conditions of 0.1 mol/L or more acidic or alkaline
solutions. Using the electrode under such conditions
may degrade the electrode performance and shorten
the electrode life span.
Do not allow the connector to come in contact with water
or unclean hands. If not, accurate measurement cannot
be performed.
If the responsive glass membrane or liquid junction is
dirty, clean the electrode (refer to " Cleaning " (page 3)).
Silver chloride deposits may be detected inside the
responsive glass membrane. This does not affect The
performance.
Disposal of the product and samples
When disposing of the electrode, follow the related laws
and/or regulations of your country.
When disposing of used samples, follow the related
laws and/or regulations in your country. Although the IL
is not a poisonous or deleterious substance, it contains
phosphorus and fluorine, which are designated as
restricted substances in some countries. A sample after
pH measurement is usually minimal to comply with the
regulations. But if the electrode is immersed in 1 L sam-
ple for 50 days or longer, they may exceed the limit.
