Abstract
The purpose of this white paper is to present both an overview of the preinstalled software with
operating system support and a brief description of major software components and features. This
white paper covers the new HP Compaq Business Notebook nc4010 models, along with a software
comparison to HP Compaq Business Notebook nc4000, nc6000 and nc8000 models.
This document is intended for HP personnel and customers who need information about the software
provided on the nc4010 preinstall images.

Operating systems available for the nc4010 series include:

•Microsoft Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 1a
Microsoft Windows 2000
Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 4 is the preinstalled operating system for
select HP Compaq nc4010 models through the first quarter of 2004. HP also supports customers who
install Windows 2000 on their own.

ROM BIOS update
The ROM BIOS version that will initially ship on the nc4010 is version F.25. The updated nc4010
factory image and ROM BIOS is being used on the nc4000. Changes include:
•Resolves issue involving USB devices not resuming the computer from Standby mode when
Bluetooth was enabled.
•Resolves issue involving the Wireless button opening the language menu in F10 Setup.
•Resolves issue involving hibernation under Windows NT© on nc4000 models.
Software delivery
Delivery methods for software updates available for HP commercial computers include:
•HP Support Software CD
•HP Worldwide Web Site and Download Facility
•HP Restore CD Kit
HP Support Software CD
The Support Software CD (SSCD) includes updated drivers and utilities for HP commercial notebook,
desktop, and workstation computers. Key drivers and utilities for HP computers are included on the
SSCD. The user interface is in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Japanese. The SSCD is
updated regularly and is available either through an annual subscription or as a one-time purchase.
Subscriptions can be purchased through customer support or from an authorized dealer.

HP Worldwide Website and download facility
Individual drivers and utilities can be downloaded, in the form of SoftPaqs, from the HP Download
Facility or from the website at http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/ or
ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/. SoftPaqs provide a distribution method for driver and ROM
updates and product software enhancements. Multiple files and bootable diskettes can be distributed
conveniently and electronically through diskettes or the Web.
HP Restore CDs
Restore CDs are shipped with HP Compaq nc4010 models. The CDs provide an easy-to-use complete
restore solution for preinstalled operating systems. This restore solution allows users to selectively
install and repair the OS, drivers, and applications; or to perform a full preinstalled software
restoration. The OS CD contains the preinstalled operating system. The Driver Recover CD provides
drivers, utilities, and applications that are preinstalled on the computer.

HP Compaq nc4010 PCs feature the ATI video chipsets. Software drivers enable all functionality of
the chipset. Driver support is complemented by a display utility that provides easy access to video
settings through the Windows Control Panel.
Audio

Audio drivers on the nc4010 enable the ADI CODEC controller to run multimedia applications using
Microsoft DirectSound audio capability.

DriveLock
DriveLock is a security feature that offers advanced protection against unauthorized access to
valuable data on computer hard drives. Two passwords control access to the hard drives, which
provide customers with a means to unlock a protected drive if the day-to-day user password has been
lost. Hard drives protected with DriveLock remain protected even if removed from the notebook.
Features and settings are accessed through the F10 Setup Utility.

Power-On password

The power-on password helps prevent an unauthorized user from powering on the system. After a
power-on password is established, the user is required to type the password during the power-on
process.
Administrator password

The administrator password, also known as the setup password, helps prevent unauthorized changes
to the system configuration. If the administrator password is not known, F10 Setup Utility is
inaccessible.
