Quick Setup guide (available in print and Adobe Acrobat PDF on
the Documentation and Diagnostics CD). It will help you set up
factory-provided software. It also includes basic troubleshooting
information, should you have problems during the initial startup
process.

Installing & Customizing the Software
ÄCAUTION: Do not add optional hardware or third-party devices to
the computer until the operating system is successfully installed.
Doing so may cause errors and prevent the operating system from
installing properly.
✎Be sure there is a 4-inch (10.2-cm) clearance at the back of the
unit and above the monitor to permit the required airflow.
Installing the Operating System
The first time you turn on the computer, the operating system is
installed automatically. This process takes about 5 to 10 minutes,
depending on which operating system is being installed.
Carefully read and follow the instructions on the screen to
complete the installation.
ÄCAUTION: Once the automatic installation has begun, DO NOT
TURN OFF THE COMPUTER UNTIL THE PROCESS IS COMPLETE.
Turning off the computer during the installation process may damage
the software that runs the computer or prevent its proper installation.
✎If the computer shipped with more than one operating system
language on the hard drive, the installation process could take up
to 60 minutes.

If your computer was not shipped with a Microsoft operating
system, some portions of this documentation do not apply. For
complete operating system installation and configuration
instructions, refer to the operating system documentation.
Additional information is available in online help after you install
the operating system.
Microsoft Security Updates
This system has been delivered to you from the HP factory with
Microsoft Critical updates loaded on your system and ready for
installation that were available at the time of development. HP
and Microsoft strongly recommend that you install the Microsoft
Security Updates loaded on your system, and then connect to the
Microsoft Windows update Web site to acquire any additional
critical Microsoft Security updates recommended for your
operating system.
Installing Microsoft Critical Updates that are
Loaded on the System
Please install the critical updates that were loaded on the system
before connecting to the Internet.
1. Click Start > All Programs > Software Setup. The
Welcome screen appears.
2. On the Welcome screen, click Next.
a. If Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack Hotfixes
appears as a Software Setup application choice, ensure
that it is checked.
b. If Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack Hotfixes does
not appear as a Software Setup application choice, then
the updates were preinstalled at the factory. Click Cancel
and proceed to step 5.

3. Click Next to proceed with the installation.
A status bar indicating the progress of the installation is
displayed.
4. From the Setup Complete window, click Finish to reboot the
computer.
5. Proceed with the steps in the Downloading Updates from
the Microsoft Windows Update Web site section to ensure
you have all of the latest updates for your system.
Downloading Updates from the Microsoft
Windows Update Web Site
1. To set up your Internet connection, click Start > Internet
Explorer and follow the instructions on the screen.
2. Once an Internet connection has been established, click the
Start button.
3. Select the All Programs menu.
Click on the Windows Update link at the top of the menu.
You will be directed to the Microsoft Windows Update
Web site.
You may see one or more pop-up windows that will ask you
to install a program from www.microsoft.com.
4. Click Ye s to install the programs from www.microsoft.com.
5. Click the Scan for Updates link when it appears.
After scanning, click the Critical Updates and Service
Packs link when it appears under the heading Pick updates
to install.
A list of updates will appear with all updates selected by
default.
It is recommended that you install all of the updates listed in
this section.

6. Click on the Review and Install Updates link.
7. Click the Install Now button. This will start downloading the
critical updates and automatically install them.
8. After the updates have been installed, Windows XP will
prompt you to reboot the machine. Be sure to save any files
or documents that you may have open before rebooting. Then
select Ye s to reboot the machine.

Installing or Upgrading Device Drivers
When installing optional hardware devices after the operating
system installation is complete, you must also install the drivers
for each of the devices.
If prompted for the I386 directory, replace the path specification
with C:\i386,or use the Browse button in the dialog box to
locate the i386 folder. This action points the operating system to
the appropriate drivers.
Obtain the latest support software, including support software for
the operating system from www.hp.com/support. Select your
country and language, select Download drivers and software,
enter the model number of the computer, and press Enter.

You can also obtain the latest support software on CDs. The
following Web site provides information on how to purchase a
support software CD subscription:

✎If the computer has a writable optical drive, install the
appropriate application to be able to write to the drive (see the
CDs that came with the system).
Customizing the Monitor Display
If you wish, you can select or change the monitor model, refresh
rates, screen resolution, color settings, font sizes, and power
management settings. To do so, right-click on the Windows
Desktop, then click Properties to change display settings. For
more information, refer to the online documentation provided
with the graphics controller utility or the documentation that
came with your monitor.
Protecting the Software
To protect the software from loss or damage, keep a backup copy
of all system software, applications, and related files stored on the
hard drive. Refer to the operating system or backup utility
documentation for instructions on making backup copies of your
data files.
Transferring Files and Settings
Use the Microsoft Windows XP Files and Settings Transfer
Wizard to move files and settings from the old computer to the
new one. Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System
Tools > Files and Settings Transfer Wizard.

Restoring the Software
Restore the original operating system and factory-installed
software by using the Restore Plus! CD and any other CDs that
came with the computer. Carefully read and follow the
instructions provided for the restore solution that came with the
computer.
For questions about or problems with this CD, please contact
customer support.
Turning Off the Computer
To properly turn off the computer, first shut down the operating
system software. In Microsoft Windows XP Professional, click
Start > Shut Down. In Microsoft Windows XP Home, click
Start > Turn Off Computer. The computer automatically shuts
down.
Depending on the operating system, pressing the power button
causes the computer to enter a low-power or “standby” state
instead of automatically turning the power off. This allows you to
conserve energy without closing software applications; later, you
can start using the computer immediately without having to
restart the operating system and without losing any data.
ÄCAUTION: Manually forcing the computer off bypasses the
standby state and can cause loss of unsaved data.
To force the computer off manually, press and hold the power
button for four seconds.
To reconfigure the power button to work in On/Off mode, run
Computer Setup. Refer to the Computer Setup (F10) Utility
Guide on the Documentation and Diagnostics CD for more
information about using the Computer Setup utility.

Working with the MultiBay
The MultiBay is a special drive bay that supports a variety of
optional 12.7-mm removable drives, including:
■ MultiBay 1.44-MB Diskette Drive*
■ MultiBay CD-ROM Drive*
■ MultiBay CD-RW Drive
■ MultiBay DVD-ROM Drive
■ MultiBay CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo Drive
■ MultiBay SMART Hard Drive
* Can be hot-plugged or hot-swapped
ÄCAUTION: To prevent loss of work and damage to the computer or a
drive:
■ When the computer is plugged into an AC power source,
voltage is always applied to the system board. You must
disconnect the power cord from the power source before
opening the computer to prevent system board damage.
■ Before handling a drive, ensure that you are discharged of static
electricity. While handling a drive, avoid touching the connector.
■ Before traveling with, shipping, storing, or removing a drive
other than a hard drive, make sure that no media, such as a
diskette, CD-ROM, or DVD-ROM, is in the drive and that the
media tray is closed.
■ Handle a drive carefully: do not use excessive force when
inserting it, do not drop it, and do not press on the top cover.
■ Avoid exposing a hard drive to liquids, temperature extremes, or
products that have magnetic fields such as monitors or speakers.
■ If a drive must be mailed, place the drive in a bubble-pack mailer
or other suitable protective packaging and label the package
“Fragile: Handle with Care.”

“Hot-Plugging” or “Hot-Swapping”
MultiBay Drives
ÄCAUTION: To prevent damage to the computer, the drive, and any
data stored on the drive: If you are inserting or removing a hard
drive, shut down the computer. Never remove a hard drive while the
computer is on or on standby. To ensure that the computer is not on
standby, turn the computer on, then shut it down.
If the computer is running a preinstalled operating system
supplied by HP, you can insert or remove a diskette drive or an
optical drive while the computer is on, off, or on standby.
ÄCAUTION: After inserting an optical drive while the computer is
turned on, restart the computer to ensure the optical drive functions
correctly if it uses recording, backup, or video playback software
applications.
Engaging and Releasing the MultiBay
Security Catch
When engaged, the MultiBay security catch disables the
MultiBay eject lever, so that a drive installed in the MultiBay
cannot be removed.
ÅWARNING: To reduce the risk of personal injury from electrical
shock and/or hot surfaces, be sure to disconnect the power cord
from the wall outlet, and allow the internal system components to
cool before touching.
ÅWARNING: To reduce the risk of electrical shock, fire, or damage
to the equipment, do not plug telecommunications or telephone
connectors into the network interface controller (NIC) receptacles.

ÄCAUTION: Static electricity can damage the electronic components
of the computer or optional equipment. Before beginning these
procedures, ensure that you are discharged of static electricity by
briefly touching a grounded metal object.
To secure a drive in the MultiBay:
1. If the Smart Cover Sensor is enabled, restart the computer
and enter Computer Setup to disable it.
2. Turn off the computer properly through the operating system,
then turn off any external devices.
3. Disconnect the power cord from the power outlet and the
computer, and disconnect any external devices.
4. Position the computer on its side with the rubber pads on the
bottom. (If the computer is being used in the tower
configuration, remove the computer from the stand.)

5. Loosen the thumbscrew on the rear of the computer 1, slide
the access panel toward the rear of the computer 2, then lift it
off.

6. Rotate the catch toward the left side of the computer until it is
engaged.

7. Replace the access panel.
8. Replace the stand, if desired.
9. Reconnect all external devices, plug the power cord into the
power outlet, and turn the computer on.
10. Use Computer Setup to enable the Smart Cover Sensor, if
desired.
To release the MultiBay security catch:
1. If the Smart Cover Sensor is enabled, restart the computer
and enter Computer Setup to disable it.
2. Turn off the computer properly through the operating system,
then turn off any external devices.

3. Disconnect the power cord from the power outlet and the
computer, and disconnect any external devices.
4. Position the computer on its side with the rubber pads on the
bottom. (If the computer is being used in the tower
configuration, remove the computer from the stand.)

9. Reconnect all external devices, plug the power cord into the
power outlet, and turn the computer on.
10. Use Computer Setup to enable the Smart Cover Sensor, if
desired.
Removing a Drive from the MultiBay
1. Remove any removable media, such as a compact disc, from
the drive.
2. Before removing an optical or diskette drive, stop the drive
using the Safely Remove Hardware icon on the Windows
XP task bar.
3. If you are not hot-swapping an optical or diskette drive, exit
all software applications, shut down the operating system
software, and turn off the computer.
4. Release the MultiBay security catch, if it has been engaged.

Catch” on page 8 for more information.

5. Slide the eject lever down (or towards the left of the
computer, if the computer is in the desktop position) 1to
eject the drive 2from the MultiBay.

1. Remove any removable media, such as a compact disc, from
the drive.
2. If you are not hot-swapping an optical or diskette drive, exit
all software applications, shut down the operating system
software, and turn off the computer.

3. With the top of the drive facing left (or up, when the
computer is in the desktop position) and the drive connector
facing the computer, slide the drive into the MultiBay and
push firmly to ensure that the electrical connector is properly
seated.

4. After inserting an optical drive while the computer is turned
on, restart the computer to ensure the optical drive functions
correctly if it uses recording, backup, or video playback
software applications.
✎If you are using an operating system other than Microsoft
Windows XP, you must install an audio cable to use the sound
feature of the drive.
5. Engage the MultiBay security catch, if desired. Refer to
“Engaging and Releasing the MultiBay Security Catch” on
page 8 for more information.

If the device does not start, ensure that the necessary device
drivers are installed on the system. If they are not available, they
may be downloaded, at no cost, from the HP Web site at
www.hp.com/support. Select your country and language, select
Download drivers and software, enter the model number of the
computer, and press Enter.
Partitioning and Formatting a MultiBay
Hard Drive
✎You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the
Administrators group in order to complete this procedure.
1. Exit all software applications, shut down the operating
system software, and turn off the computer.
2. Insert the hard drive into the MultiBay. Refer to “Inserting a
Drive into the MultiBay” on page 14 for more information.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. Click Start.
5. Right-click My Computer, then click Manage.
6. Click Storage, then double-click Disk Management.
7. Right-click the MultiBay hard drive, then click Partition.
Carefully read and respond to any prompts that appear on the
screen.
Refer to the online Help (click Action > Help) for additional
information.
