1 Getting Started
The following important information must be adhered to for proper removal and
replacement of all Hewlett-Packard parts.
CAUTION This upgrade process should be performed by experienced hardware users only.

Safety Warnings
WARNING Removing the device cover may expose sharp edges in the equipment chassis.
To avoid injury, use care when installing customer add-on devices.
NOTE Before performing removal/replacement procedures, position the workstation on a
cushioned flat, stable surface, such as a table top or workbench.
NOTE Installing the recommended HP replacement part in your J Class workstation does not
affect the regulatory and safety classifications or approvals listed in the original owner’s
guide.
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Precautions
To prevent damage to the J Class workstation, observe all of the following ESD
precautions while performing removal and replacement procedures:
• Remove all ESD-generating materials from the work area in which you will remove
and replace the workstation field replaceable unit(s).
• Open the ESD materials provided with the replacement part kit. Unfold the black
conductive sheeting (antistatic mat) and place it under a corner of the workstation.
• Wear a static strap to ensure that any accumulated electrostatic charge is
discharged from your body to ground. Attach the static-grounding wrist strap by
following the instructions on the package. Attach the sticky end of the wrist strap to
bare metal on the rear panel of the workstation.
• Connect all equipment together, including the static-free mat, static strap, clips
attached to the wrist strap, and peripheral units.
• Keep uninstalled printed circuit boards in their protective antistatic bags.
• Once you have removed printed circuit boards from their protective antistatic bags,
handle the printed circuit boards by their edges only.

• Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) materials
• Removal/Replacement Instructions
If you are missing any part or any documentation, please call your designated service

Required Tools
You will need the following tools for removal/replacement procedures:
• Light-duty flat blade screwdriver with 6-inch (150 mm) blade
• T-15 and/or T-20 Torque drivers
• ESD materials
• Sufficient ESD protected surfaces on which to lay out parts

Preparing Your Workstation
You must prepare your workstation before you install new upgrades or remove old
components. Here is the procedure for doing this:
1. Determine if you have the correct version of the operating system. Note that your
workstation must be running the HP-UX 11.0 operating system and the Workstation
Additional Core Enchancements (ACE) for HP-UX 11.0 (November 1999) or HP-UX
11i operating system and the Hardware Enablement Bundle (HWE) for HP-UX 11i
(June 2001) to accommodate the PA8700 upgrade. Use the command uname -r to
determine the version of your operating system. For example, it should report
B.11.00. if you are running an HP-UX 11.0 operating system. If the workstation is
running an older version of HP-UX, update the operating system software before
continuing. Use the command:
/usr/sbin/swlist -l bundle
to view what software products are loaded in your system. If the bundle list includes
B6261AA, HP-UX 11.0 with ACE (Nov., 1999), or HWEnable11i, HP-UX 11i with
HWE (June, 2001), you do not need to update HP-UX.
2. Determine the workstation’s LAN ID by entering the following command:
/usr/sbin/lanscan.
The output is similar to the following:

Record the LAN ID here. You will need it after installing the new system board:

You must supply the dash (-) between the first six digits and the last six digits
After you install the new CPU board and power on the system for the first time, you
may be prompted for the LAN ID.

Safely Powering Down the J Class Workstation
You must complete the following steps before performing any of the removal and
replacement procedures:
CAUTION Do not use the power supply interlock thumbscrew on the rear panel to power down the
workstation. This power down method may hang the operating system in an
unrecoverable state.
NOTE Remove any accessory bag(s) and their black tab screws, if present, from the rear of the
workstation. Remove any existing SCSI terminators.
1. Power off the workstation by simply pressing the power switch on the front panel of
the workstation. Also, power off the monitor and any attached peripheral devices.
If necessary, shut down the workstation by executing “shutdown -h” as user root.
This ensures that all programs are terminated and all data is saved before switching
the power off.
2. After 30 seconds, unplug the workstation’s power cord and all peripheral devices
from AC power outlets. Before attempting to move the workstation to a disassembly
area, disconnect all peripherals from the back of the system.
3. Place the workstation on a flat, stable surface, such as a tabletop or floor. To protect
against scratches, remove miscellaneous debris from the work surface.

Refer to this figure to identify the various workstation FRUs while performing the FRU

WARNING For most of the removal and replacement procedures in this chapter, you must
power off the workstation and unplug the workstation power cord from the AC
power outlet. The exceptions to this are the removal and replacement of
DIMMs and the PCI cage. For these you only need to power off the
workstation.
NOTE To maintain FCC/EMI compliance, verify that all covers are replaced and that all screws
are properly seated.

Component Removal and Replacement
The procedures in this section describe how to remove the components from your
workstation. You can follow the same procedures in reverse to replace or install new
accessories or components. Observe the electrostatic discharge (ESD) precautions and
the prerequisites for removing and replacing components or accessories as discussed in
Chapter 1. Also, read any NOTEs, CAUTIONs, and WARNINGs in each component or
accessory removal and replacement procedures.
Front Bezel and Top Cover
This section describes how to remove and replace the J Class workstation’s front bezel
and top cover.
Note that you can perform certain operations, like removing and replacing hard disk
drives, simply removing the front bezel of the workstation. Other operations require
more access to the interior of the workstation, so you will need to remove the front bezel
or top panel to perform those procedures.
CAUTION The system will not operate with the top panel removed.

To replace the top cover or front bezel, perform the above steps in reverse.
NOTE The graphics in these steps depict a desk side unit. If this is a rack mount unit, the skins
and pedestal will not be present. Rack mounted systems will not have air louvres
mounted in the front bezel. When replacing the bezel, remove and discard the louvres
from the new bezel unit.

Removing the Bezel-Label Strip
If you have received the HP J Class upgrade kit, you will need to remove the old
bezel-label strip from your workstation and replace it with the new one. Here is the brief
procedure for performing this task:
1. Remove your workstations bezel as shown the section “Front Bezel and Top Cover”
in this chapter.
2. Remove the old bezel-label strip from the bezel. To do this, push up on the two
bezel-label strip release tabs shown in the top diagram of Figure 2-2 and rotate the
bezel label strip away from the bezel as shown in the bottom diagram of Figure 2-2

To replace the bezel-label strip, perform the above steps in reverse.

Removing the LCD Panel
To remove the LCD panel, do the following:

Removing the Hard Disk Drives
To remove a hard disk drive do the following:

To replace the hard disk drives, perform the above steps in reverse. You should make
sure that the disks are firmly seated. Reinstall the hard disk drive cover and optional
locking thumbscrew, if applicable.

To replace the hard disk drive backplane, do the following:

Internal Optical Drives
To remove the Optical Drives, do the following:

To replace the optical drive, perform the above steps in reverse.
Removing and Replacing Memory DIMMs
To remove and replace memory DIMMs in the J Class, refer to the memory sequence
label inside the system. Be sure to press the tabs at both ends of the DIMM slots to
release the DIMM, then lift the DIMM out of the slot.
When replacing the DIMMs, press the DIMM into the slot until the tabs on each end
snap into place.
Removing and Replacing the Voltage Regulator Modules (VRMs)
To remove and replace the VRMs, see the section on removing and replacing the system
board.
