1 Product Features
Standard Configuration Features
The HP Point of Sale System rp3000 features may vary depending on the model. For a complete listing
of the hardware and software installed on the computer, run the diagnostic utility (included on some
computer models only). Instructions for using the utility are provided in the Troubleshooting Guide on
the Documentation and Diagnostics DVD.

NOTE: This product features two optional PoweredUSB ports. In the point of sale industry,
“PoweredUSB” is also referred to as “USB+Power,” “USBPlusPower,” and “RetailUSB.” In this
document, these ports are referred to as “PoweredUSB.”

NOTE: An optical drive is a DVD-ROM or DVD+R/RW drive.
The Power On Light is normally green when the power is on. If it is flashing red, there is a problem with the computer
and it is displaying a diagnostic code. Refer to the Troubleshooting Guide on the Documentation and Diagnostics DVD
to interpret the code.

Locking the Drive Door
The sliding door on the front of the computer can be locked to prevent access to the power button and
optical drive.
To lock the door, slide it all the way up (1) and turn the key to the locked position (2).

Serial Number Location
Each computer has a unique serial number and product ID number located on the back of the computer.
Keep these numbers available for use when contacting customer service for assistance.

Warnings and Cautions
Before performing upgrades be sure to carefully read all of the applicable instructions, cautions, and
warnings in this guide.
WARNING! To reduce the risk of personal injury from electrical shock, hot surfaces, or fire:
Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet and allow the internal system components to cool before
touching.
Do not plug telecommunications or telephone connectors into the network interface controller (NIC)
receptacles.
Do not disable the power cord grounding plug. The grounding plug is an important safety feature.
Plug the power cord in a grounded (earthed) outlet that is easily accessible at all times.
To reduce the risk of serious injury, read the Safety & Comfort Guide. It describes proper workstation,
setup, posture, and health and work habits for computer users, and provides important electrical and
mechanical safety information. This guide is located on the Web at http://www.hp.com/ergo and on the
Documentation and Diagnostics DVD.
CAUTION: Static electricity can damage the electrical components of the computer or optional
equipment. Before beginning these procedures, ensure that you are discharged of static electricity by
briefly touching a grounded metal object. See Appendix D, Electrostatic Discharge on page 47, for
more information.
When the computer is plugged into an AC power source, voltage is always applied to the system board.
You must disconnect the power cord from the power source before opening the computer to prevent
damage to internal components.

Removing the Computer Cover
1. Remove/disengage any security devices that prohibit opening the computer.
2. Remove all removable media, such as compact discs, from the computer.
3. Turn off the computer properly through the operating system, then turn off any external devices.
4. Disconnect the power cord from the power outlet and disconnect any external devices.
CAUTION: Regardless of the power-on state, voltage is always present on the system board as
long as the system is plugged into an active AC outlet. You must disconnect the power cord to
avoid damage to the internal components of the computer.
5. Remove the two screws on the rear of the computer (1) that secure the cover to the computer
chassis.
6. Slide the computer cover forward about 1.3 cm (½ inch), then lift it off the unit (2).

Replacing the Computer Cover
1. Place the computer cover on the chassis about 1.3 cm (½ inch) in front of the final position and
slide it back into place until it stops (1).
2. Replace the two screws that secure the cover to the chassis (2).

Removing the Bezel Blank
On some models, a bezel blank covering the 5.25-inch external drive bay must be removed before
installing a drive. To remove a bezel blank:
1. Remove the computer cover and place it upside down on a stable surface.
2. Push outward on the two retaining tabs that hold the bezel blank in place (1) then pull the blank
inward to remove it (2).

Installing Additional Memory
The computer comes with double data rate 2 synchronous dynamic random access memory (DDR2-
SDRAM) dual inline memory modules (DIMMs).
DIMMs
The memory sockets on the system board can be populated with up to two industry-standard DIMMs.
These memory sockets are populated with at least one preinstalled DIMM. To achieve the maximum
memory support, you can populate the system board with up to 2-GB of memory.
DDR2-SDRAM DIMMs
For proper system operation, the DDR2-SDRAM DIMMs must be:
●industry-standard 240-pin
●unbuffered PC2-5300 667 MHz-compliant
●1.8 volt DDR2-SDRAM DIMMs
The DDR2-SDRAM DIMMs must also:
●support CAS latency 4 and 5 for DDR2/667 MHz
●contain the mandatory JEDEC SPD information
In addition, the computer supports:
●256Mbit, 512Mbit, and 1Gbit non-ECC memory technologies
●single-sided and double-sided DIMMs
●DIMMs constructed with x8 and x16 DDR devices; DIMMs constructed with x4 SDRAM are not
supported
NOTE: The system will accept PC2-6400 800 MHz DIMMs but will run at a lower frequency.
The system will not start if you install unsupported DIMMs.

Populating DIMM Sockets
There are two DIMM sockets on the system board. The sockets are labeled DIMM1 and DIMM2.

Installing DIMMs
CAUTION: You must disconnect the power cord and wait approximately 30 seconds for the power to
drain before adding or removing memory modules. Regardless of the power-on state, voltage is always
supplied to the memory modules as long as the computer is plugged into an active AC outlet. Adding
or removing memory modules while voltage is present may cause irreparable damage to the memory
modules or system board. If you see an LED light on the system board, voltage is still present.
The memory module sockets have gold-plated metal contacts. When upgrading the memory, it is
important to use memory modules with gold-plated metal contacts to prevent corrosion and/or oxidation
resulting from having incompatible metals in contact with each other.
Static electricity can damage the electronic components of the computer or optional cards. Before
beginning these procedures, ensure that you are discharged of static electricity by briefly touching a
grounded metal object. For more information, refer to Appendix D, Electrostatic Discharge
on page 47.
When handling a memory module, be careful not to touch any of the contacts. Doing so may damage
the module.
1. Remove/disengage any security devices that prohibit opening the computer.
2. Remove all removable media, such as compact discs, from the computer.
3. Turn off the computer properly through the operating system, then turn off any external devices.

4. Disconnect the power cord from the power outlet and disconnect any external devices.
CAUTION: You must disconnect the power cord and wait approximately 30 seconds for the
power to drain before adding or removing memory modules. Regardless of the power-on state,
voltage is always supplied to the memory modules as long as the computer is plugged into an
active AC outlet. Adding or removing memory modules while voltage is present may cause
irreparable damage to the memory modules or system board. If you see an LED light on the system
board, voltage is still present.
5. Remove the computer cover.
6. Raise the drive cage to the upright position.

7. Locate the memory module sockets on the system board.
WARNING! To reduce risk of personal injury from hot surfaces, allow the internal system
components to cool before touching.
8. Open both latches of the memory module socket (1), and insert the memory module into the socket
(2).
NOTE: A memory module can be installed in only one way. Match the notch on the module with
the tab on the memory socket.

9. Push the module down into the socket, ensuring that the module is fully inserted and properly
seated. Make sure the latches are in the closed position (3).

10. Repeat steps 8 and 9 to install any additional modules.
11. Return the drive cage to the down position.

12. Replace the computer cover.
13. Reconnect the power cord and any external devices, then turn on the computer. The computer
should automatically recognize the additional memory when you turn on the computer.
14. Lock any security devices that were disengaged when the computer cover was removed.

Removing or Installing an Expansion Card
The computer has either a full-height PCI expansion slot (1) or a full-height PCI Express x1 expansion
slot (2), depending on the model.
NOTE: The maximum length supported for a PCI card or a PCI Express x1 card is 16.76 cm (6.6
inches).

Installing and Removing a PCI Card or PCI Express x1 Card
You can install one full-height PCI expansion card or one full-height PCI Express x1 expansion card,
depending on the model.
To install an expansion card:
1. Remove/disengage any security devices that prohibit opening the computer.
2. Remove all removable media, such as compact discs, from the computer.
3. Turn off the computer properly through the operating system, then turn off any external devices.
4. Disconnect the power cord from the power outlet and disconnect any external devices.
CAUTION: Regardless of the power-on state, voltage is always present on the system board as
long as the system is plugged into an active AC outlet. You must disconnect the power cord to
avoid damage to the internal components of the computer.
5. Remove the computer cover.

6. Remove the screw that secures the expansion card slot cover or the existing expansion card to
the chassis.

7. Remove the expansion slot cover or the existing expansion card.
a. If you are installing an expansion card in a vacant socket, slide the expansion slot cover
straight out from the side of the chassis.

b. If you are replacing an existing card, hold the card at each end, and carefully rock it back and
forth until the connectors pull free from the socket. Be sure not to scrape the card against the
other components.
NOTE: Before removing an installed expansion card, disconnect any cables that may be
attached to the expansion card.

8. Store the removed card in anti-static packaging.
9. If you are not installing a new expansion card, install an expansion slot cover to close the open
slot.
CAUTION: After removing an expansion card, you must replace it with a new card or expansion
slot cover for proper cooling of internal components during operation.
