Preparing for installation
This chapter discusses safety, site, and rack-mounting requirements, as well as the tools and accessories
needed for installation.
Safety recommendations
WARNING!
Before installation and operation, read all of the safety instructions in the Compliance and Safety
Guide supplied with your router.
General safety recommendations follow:
Turn off all power and remove all power cables before opening the chassis.
Unplug all power and external cables before moving the chassis.
Before installation, locate the emergency power switch so that you can shut off power immediately if
necessary.
Always wear an ESD-preventive wrist strap when installing the device.
Do not stare into an open optical interface. The light can cause permanent eye damage.
Use a good grounding system. This is essential for reliable operation.
Confirm that the resistance between the chassis and the ground is less than 1 ohm.
Installation site requirements
This section provides information about temperature and humidity, cleanness, and air quality
requirements.

Air flows through the A-MSR20 from left to right, as shown in Figure 7.

To prevent overheating:
Provide adequate clearance for air flow.
Provide at least 10 cm [3.94 in] ventilation space around the router's air intake and outlet vents.
For heat dissipation and device maintenance, the front and rear of the rack should be at least
0.8 m (2.62 ft) away from walls or other devices.
The equipment room ceiling height should be no less than 3 m (9.84 ft).
Make sure the site has an adequate cooling system.
Lightning protection
To protect the router from lightning:
Make sure the grounding cable of the chassis is grounded properly.
Make sure the grounding terminal of the AC power receptacle is grounded properly.
Install a lightning arrester at the input end of the power supply.
Install a lightning arrester at the input end of outdoor signal lines (for example, E1/T1 line) to which
the router’s interface modules are connected.

Rack-mounting requirements
Before rack-mounting a switch, make sure the rack meets the following requirements:
Size. The rack must be appropriately sized to hold the switch.
Ventilation. HP recommends that you mount a switch in an open rack. If you mount a switch in a
closed rack, provide an adequate heat dissipation system. With either type of rack, there must be
enough space around the switch's left and right panels for unimpeded airflow and heat dissipation.
Sturdy support. The rack must provide steady, secure support for the switch and accessories.

Keep the router far away from radio transmitters, radar,
and high-frequency or high-voltage devices.
Use electromagnetic shielding when necessary.
Lightning protection
The grounding cable of the chassis is grounded
properly.
The grounding terminal of the AC power receptacle is
grounded properly.
A port lightning arrester is installed. (Optional)
A power lightning arrester is installed. (Optional)
A signal lightning arrester is installed at the input end
of an external signal cable. (Optional)
Electricity safety
Install a UPS.
In case of emergency during operation, switch off the
external power switch.
Workbench
The workbench is stable.
The workbench is grounded properly.

Install the router in an open rack if possible. If you
install the router in a closed cabinet, make sure that the
cabinet is equipped with a good ventilation system.
The rack is sturdy enough to support the weight of the
router and accessories.

Installing the router
WARNING!
To avoid injury, do not touch bare wires, terminals, or parts with high-voltage hazard signs.
NOTE:
The barcode on the router chassis contains important product information that you must provide to HP Support
before returning a faulty router for service.
The HP tamper-proof label attached to a mounting screw on the router chassis must be kept intact. Before
opening the chassis cover, contact HP Support for authorization; if you do not, you take full responsibility for all
operation and maintenance failures.
This chapter provides instructions for installing the router on a workbench or mounting it in a 19-inch rack.
Installation prerequisites
You have read "Preparing for installation" carefully.
All requirements in "Preparing for installation" are met.

Installing the router
When installing the router:
Reserve a space of 10 cm (3.9 in) around the router for heat dissipation.
Do not place heavy objects on the router.
Installing the router on a workbench
To install the router on a workbench:
1. Make sure the workbench is clean, stable and properly grounded.
2. Place the router upside down on the workbench and attach the rubber feet to the four round holes
in the chassis bottom.
3. Place the router upright on the workbench.

CAUTION
Mounting brackets can support only the weight of the router. To avoid damaging the router, do not
place any objects on it.

To mount the router in a 19-inch rack, as shown in Figure 9:
1. Determine where to attach the cage nuts to match the mounting bracket holes.
2. Attach the cage nuts to the rack posts.
3. Attach the front mounting brackets, shown in Figure 10, to the sides of the router.
4. Mount the router in the rack horizontally by fastening the mounting brackets to the rack with
rustproof panhead screws that meet installation requirements.

CAUTION
Mounting brackets can support only the weight of the router. To avoid damaging the router, do not

To install the router in a 19-inch rack, as shown in Figure 11:
1. Attach the rear mounting brackets, shown in Figure 12, to the rack.
a. Determine where to attach the cage nuts to match the mounting bracket holes.
b. Attach the cage nuts to the rack posts.
c. Attach the rear mounting brackets to the rack.
2. Attach the front mounting brackets, shown in Figure 12, to the sides of the router.

3. Screw two weight-bearing screws into the appropriate holes, one on the left side and one on the
right side of the router. These screws will rest on the top edges of the rear mounting brackets.
4. Position the router so that the weight-bearing screws fit securely over the top edges of the rear
mounting brackets.
5. Secure the router fastening the front mounting brackets to the rack with rustproof panhead screws
that meet installation requirements.

Grounding the router
WARNING!
Connecting the router grounding cable correctly is crucial for protecting the router from lightning and
EMI.
The grounding resistance should be less than 5 ohms.
If the router is mounted in a 19-inch standard rack, the rack must be properly grounded.
You can ground the router in one of the following ways, depending on the grounding conditions at the
installation site:
Ground the router to a properly grounded grounding strip.
Ground the router to a grounding conductor buried in the earth.
Grounding the router to a grounding strip
To connect the grounding cable, as shown in Figure 13:
1. Remove the grounding screw from the rear panel of the router chassis.
2. Put the OT terminal of the supplied grounding cable on the grounding screw.
3. Use a screwdriver to fasten the grounding screw, with the grounding cable OT terminal attached,
to the grounding screw hole.

4. Attach the other end of the grounding cable to the grounding strip, as shown in Figure 14.

Grounding the router to a buried grounding conductor
If the installation site has no grounding strips but offers the option of grounding to earth, hammer a 0.5 m
(1.64 ft) or longer angle iron or steel tube into the earth to serve as a grounding conductor, as shown in
Figure 15.

Installing interface modules
The router provides SIC slots. On some models, you can remove a slot divider to combine two side-by-
side SIC slots into one DSIC slot, as shown in Table 6.

To install a SIC interface module, as shown in Figure 16:
1. Power off the router and remove the power cord.
2. Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the screws on the filler panel, and then remove the filler panel.
3. Push the SIC interface module into the SIC slot along the slide rails until it is firmly seated.
4. Using a flat-blade screwdriver, tighten the captive screws to fasten the SIC interface module to the
router.

To install a DSIC interface module, as shown in Figure 17:
1. Power off the router and remove the power cord.
2. Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the screws on two side-by-side SIC filler panels, and loosen
the captive screw on the slot divider.
3. Remove the filler panels and pull out the slot divider.
4. Push the DSIC interface module into the DSIC slot until it is firmly seated.
5. Using a flat-blade screwdriver, tighten the captive screws to secure the module.
6. Save the filler panels and slot divider for future use.
