1 Introduction
A Brand-New Server
When you use this kit to upgrade your HP NetServer LXr 8000 to an LXr 8500,
you end up with a brand-new server. It retains the original serial and model
numbers, but your upgraded server will have many new boards with new
capabilities.
Reinstalling your network operating system (NOS) is an essential part of this
upgrade. Reinstalling the NOS ensures that you can use all of the new features of
the NetServer LXr 8500.
NOTE Whenever you call for service on your upgraded NetServer, be
sure to identify your NetServer as an LXr 8000 with its original
serial number. Then, you must always tell the service
representative that it has been upgraded to an LXr 8500. Be
sure to identify your NetServer as having been upgraded to an
LXr 8500 before a service representative comes to your site.
Because this upgrade provides the equivalent of a brand-new server, be sure you
follow the instructions in this chapter to verify NOS versions and determine which
accessories you need before you begin to disassemble your NetServer LXr 8000.
Verify NOS Versions Supported by the LXr 8500
Verify which versions of your NOS are supported for the NetServer LXr 8500.
Performing this upgrade gives you a whole new server, and when you reinstall
your NOS you may need to upgrade from one NOS version to another. For a

Determine Which Accessories You Need
Use the guidelines described in this section when purchasing additional memory
and processors.
Memory
The upgrade kit comes with one memory board and one 256-MB DIMM.
WARNING You cannot move the EDO DIMMs that came with the
LXr 8000 to the LXr 8500.
You can purchase additional memory following these guidelines:
l DIMM sizes can be mixed per board, and can be placed in any DIMM
socket. There are no requirements to load the sockets in any specific
sequence.
•For up to eight DIMMs, use one memory board.
•For more than eight DIMMs, a second memory board must be installed to
maintain compliance with electromagnetic compatibility standards.
•If you are using two memory boards, you can leave one board empty and
install up to 16 DIMMs on one board. Or, you can install DIMMs on both
boards.
l If you install DIMMs on both boards, the two boards must be identically
configured with DIMMs. You may still mix DIMM sizes and place the
DIMMs in any order, but the same size DIMM must be placed in the same
socket position on both boards.
NOTE If DIMMs of different sizes are installed in the same number
socket on the two boards, this is a "mismatched pair." If a
mismatch is detected during the start-up memory tests, both
mismatched DIMMs will be reconfigured to use the smaller of
the two sizes.
•If you install DIMMs on both boards, you must install an equal number of
DIMMs on each board. The system will de-configure any unpaired
DIMMs.

•Using two memory boards, your maximum capacity with 256-MB DIMMs
is 8 GB.
NOTE Consult your NOS documentation to determine the maximum
amount of memory supported by your NOS. For example,
Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 and Novell NetWare 5 can address
a maximum of 4 GB of memory.
Processors
The upgrade kit comes with seven terminators to be used as needed. All
processors from the LXr 8000 can be moved into the LXr 8500.
You can purchase additional processors for a total of eight processors.
CAUTION When the HP NetServer LXr 8500 is configured with multiple
processors, all the processors must have the same frequency,
stepping, and cache size. For example, do not mix 400-MHz
processors that have different-sized caches, and do not mix
400-MHz and 450-MHz processors.
PCI Boards
The LXr 8500 can accommodate a maximum of six 5V PCI boards. The other
four PCI slots can accommodate 3.3V PCI boards. You can place Universal
boards in any of the ten PCI slots. (Universal boards are dual mode and can be
used in both 3.3V and 5V slots.)
Returning LXr 8000 Components to HP
During the upgrade process, some NetServer LXr 8000 components are removed
and replaced by LXr 8500 components. You can return all removed to parts to
Hewlett-Packard for recycling.

located within 100 miles of a Hewlett-Packard Primary Service Office. In other
locations, you will be charged for travel.

Purpose of This Guide
This guide describes the steps you need to perform to convert the HP NetServer
LXr 8000 to the HP NetServer LXr 8500. This guide includes the following
topics:
•Chapter 1, "Introduction," explains what accessories you might need before
you begin the upgrade, and identifies related documentation you might
need.
•Chapter 2, "Preparing for the Upgrade," identifies the necessary tools,
instructs you to back up your data, and suggests how to set up your work
area. It also lists the contents of each box in the upgrade kit.
•Chapter 3, "Disassembling the LXr 8000," explains exactly which
components must be removed from the NetServer LXr 8000.
•Chapter 4, "Preparing to Assemble the LXr 8500," explains how to put
together the processor tray and memory board subassemblies.
•Chapter 5, "Assembling the LXr 8500," describes the assembly procedure.
•Chapter 6, "Preliminary Hardware Verification" instructs you to turn on
power to the NetServer, perform initial hardware verification, and update
your BIOS and firmware.

Precautions
Follow the procedures listed below to ensure safe handling of components and to
prevent harm to yourself and the NetServer.
CAUTION Operating the NetServer without all covers in place reduces
critical cooling airflow over some components, such as hard
disk drives and processor modules. Continuous operation of
the NetServer without all covers in place will increase
temperatures and may reduce the reliability of some
components.
Wear a wrist strap and use a static-dissipating work surface
connected to the chassis at all times to prevent possible static
electricity damage to the NetServer components.

2 Preparing for the Upgrade
This chapter explains the steps to take before you begin the upgrade.
l Gather the tools you need.
l Back up your data.
l Check the internal event log.
l Set up your work area.
l Open the boxes and verify their contents.
Tools You Need
To install this accessory you need the following tools:
•An anti-static service kit (3M8501/8502/8503 or equivalent). This kit
includes a static-dissipating work surface, a chassis clip lead, and a wrist
strap.
•Several anti-static mats
•T15 Torx®screwdriver (slender enough to insert into the bezel hinge)
If you need to remove the NetServer from a rack, you will also need some
additional tools. Refer to the HP NetServer LXr 8500 Installation Guide and your
rack documentation for further details.
Back Up Your Data
Before you start the upgrade, you must back up all hard disk drives and verify that
the backup can be restored.
CAUTION It is extremely important that you back up all data. After you
complete the hardware upgrade, you will clear your boot drive
and reinstall your NOS. If you have data stored on your boot
drive, make a second complete backup of this data.

Check the System Event Log
Be sure to check the system event log before you disassemble the LXr 8000.
NOTE This is not the Windows NT Event Log.
1. Close all applications, log off all users, and shut down the operating
system.
2. Find the new HP NetServer Navigator CD-ROM shipped with this upgrade
kit and insert it into the CD-ROM drive.
3. Turn on power to the NetServer.
4. From the Navigator Main Menu, select "NetServer Utilities" then "More
NetServer Utilities."
5. View the Event Log Report Utility from the "More NetServer Utilities"
option. If there are problems with the system, troubleshoot these before
continuing with the upgrade. You might want to save the Event Log file
before you proceed. Refer to the HP NetServer LXr 8000 Installation
Guide and the HP NetServer Online Documentation CD-ROM.
6. Exit from the Navigator and shut down the NetServer.
Set Up Your Work Area
As you work, you need to separate components into two groups:
•Some components removed from the LXr 8000 will be reused in the
LXr 8500. You will need a large table with several anti-static mats on
which you can place the components to be reused.
•Some components will not be reused. You will need a second table to hold
these components.
NOTE We recommend that the tables are close to the NetServer you
are upgrading to minimize electro-static discharge exposure as
you remove and insert components.
As you disassemble the LXr 8000, you will be told where to place each
component.

CAUTION Components of this accessory kit are sensitive to static
electricity and can be easily damaged by improper handling.
Read the following information carefully before you handle
the accessory components:
•Leave the components in the anti-static container until you
are ready to install them.
•Use an anti-static wrist strap and a grounding mat. Read
and follow the instructions included with the wrist strap
and mat.
•Before you remove a component from its anti-static
container, touch a grounded, unpainted metal surface on
the NetServer to discharge static electricity.
The contents of each shipping box are itemized in the sections that follow.
