1 Alert On LAN 2 Features and
Requirements
Alert on LAN 2 (AOL2) is shipped with HP NetServer LP1000r and LP2000r
systems to enable an administrator to perform remote power functions on their
servers over the network via a simple Microsoft Windows-based interface or DOS
command. These functions allow you to:
lPower off the server
lPower cycle the server (like pressing the on/off button to turn the system
off and then back on)
lReset the server (like pressing a PC's reset button)
lWhen applicable, allow these power functions to gracefully shut down the
Network Operating System first
NOTE To power on the server, you may use the server's Wake-On-
LAN (WOL) capability. You will need to obtain software that
can access this capability, such as Intel's LANDesk Client
Manager (Rev 3.1x or later) or AMD's Magic Packet
technology.

How Does AOL2 Work?
AOL2 works by sending a special network packet from a Windows client to your
AOL2-enabled servers to perform power functions remotely.
To enable your server (this feature is disabled by default) to perform power
functions over the network, you must first enable power on/off and Wake On
LAN options of your the server's LAN A port (LAN B doesn't support AOL2).
This is done through the server's BIOS setup program. Once the LAN A port is
enabled, you should connect it to the network, preferably to a private network
dedicated to management and only accessible by administrators.
Then you install NetServer Agents software which includes the services your
server will need to recognize AOL2 packets.
Finally, you install the client software at a secure management console (a
network-connected PC running Windows).
From the management console, you use a Windows program or DOS command to
send AOL2 packets to the specified servers. These packets initiate the specified
power functions on the selected LP1000r or LP2000r NetServers.

A Word About Security
Once the server has been setup and enabled to receive these packets, you should
ensure that no one other than specified administrators can access the software used
to shut down or power cycle your servers. Do this by installing the AOL2 client
software only on designated, secure, password-protected, management consoles.
For the most protection, HP recommends that you only connect the LAN A port of
your HP NetServers to an isolated LAN dedicated to management tasks and only
available to authorized administrators.
Requirements
lThe HP NetServer Navigator CD-ROM version L.19.00, M.01.00 or above
(comes with the server)
At the NetServer:
lMust be an HP NetServer LP1000r or LP2000r
lThe server must be running Windows Server; either NT 4.0 or 2000
lThe server's LAN A port must have a network connection and be
configured to enable power and WOL functions (HP recommends that the
network that you connect LAN A port to should be only accessible by
administrators)
A the management console:
lMust be running either Windows 95, 98, 2000 or NT 4.0

The follow sections describe how to install, use, and disable the AOL2 feature.
Setting Up AOL2 at the Server
1. Boot the NetServer and run the server's BIOS setup program (press F2
when prompted during the boot process).
2. At the main menu, go under Configuration and get to the embedded LAN
A port menu.
3. Enable the LAN power on/off and Wake On LAN (WOL) functions.
4. Save and exit.
5. After the Network Operating System is installed, run the NetServer Agents
installation program (this may be done from a client). The setup program is
located on the HP NetServer Navigator CD-ROM under
Manage\Server\language\NOS\setup.exe
where language indicates the language (FR=French, GE=German,
IT=Italian, SP=Spanish, US=English) and NOS indicates the abbreviation
for the version of Windows.
6. Once the NetServer Agents are installed, it is a good idea to go to each
server that you will be using AOL2 on and confirm that the two services
HPSDNSVC (the shutdown service) and HPAOLSVC (the AOL2
service) are set to "automatic" and have been started (the AOL2 setup
program should do this by default). You can do this under Control Panel |
Services. The services should be set this way to ensure that they start
automatically whenever the server is restarted.
NOTE If the IP address of your server ever changes, you will need to
either reboot the server or stop and restart the AOL2 service.
Not doing so will prevent you from using AOL2 features on
your server.

Setting Up AOL2 at the Management Console
1. At your management console, run the AOL2 client software installation
program. The setup program is located on the HP NetServer Navigator
CD-ROM under
Manage\Console\Aol_util\setup.exe
2. After the installation, look under Programs | Hewlett-Packard for the
Alert-On-LAN2 icon.
NOTE The only way to ensure that the AOL2 power functions aren't
used by unauthorized personnel is to install the client software
only on a designated, secure, password-protected management
console.
For the most protection, you should only connect the LAN A
port of your HP NetServers to an isolated LAN dedicated to
management tasks and only available to authorized
administrators.
Using AOL2
Once AOL2 is setup at both the server and the management console, do the
following to access NetServer power functions over the network.
Using AOL2 from Windows
From your management console running Windows, click on the Alert-On-LAN2
icon found under Programs | Hewlett-Packard. The following interface will
appear:

From this interface, you do basically three things:
1. Enter the host name or IP address of the NetServer you wish to perform an
AOL2 action on.
2. Select the power action to perform (some of these actions also allow you to
gracefully shut down the NOS before performing the power option, this
Attempt Graceful Action option will be grayed if it is not supported in
conjunction with a power option).
NOTE If the server is experiencing a NOS hang, a graceful NOS shut
down may not be possible. In that event, the server will
perform the power function without a graceful shut down.
3. Click the Send AOL Command button.
4. You may then verify that the power function was successful by running HP
TopTools and opening the page for the server (it will indicate whether your
server is up or down), or pinging the server. Refer to the Server
Management Reference Guide included with your server to find out more
about HP TopTools.
Using AOL2 from DOS
You can issue AOL2 commands from the DOS command prompt (under
Programs | Command Prompt). This feature allows you to include commands in
batch files to send power commands to multiple NetServers. The syntax for a
DOS command is:

aol2 poweroption hostname
where poweroption indicates which power option you wish to use and hostname
is the hostname or IP address of your NetServer. To get a list of parameters, enter
the command aol2 without any parameters.
NOTE The above command line assumes that the path to the system32
directory is included as an environment variable. This is
typically the case by default, but if you receive an error when
trying to execute this command, look under Control Panel |
System |Environment to confirm that the path is listed.
Otherwise, you will need to copy the aol2 files to the system32
directory to run it.
Disabling AOL2
If, after enabling a server to use AOL2, you decide that the server should be
blocked from accepting AOL2 packets, you need to do two things at the server:
1. Disable the WOL and LAN power options of the server's LAN A port. This
can be done using the server's BIOS setup program (look for the F2 prompt
during boot-up).
2. Stop the HPAOLSVC service.
