Intended Audience
This document is intended for HP technicians and customers who purchased the
SAN Switch 2/8 EL and SAN Switch 2/8 power pak models.
Purpose of Release
The purpose of the SAN Switch 2/8 v3.1.x release is to provide the optional
Secure Fabric OS feature, a comprehensive security product. Refer to the HP
StorageWorks Secure Fabric OS Version 1.0 User Guide, for detailed information
about how to integrate Security into your SAN.
Supported Configurations
For the latest supported configuration, please refer to the HP StorageWorks SAN
Product Support Tables for the SAN Design Reference Guide, part number
AV-RNZEM-TE, available at:

Note: HP recommends that all switches in the SAN operate using the same revision of
firmware. Or, in a mixed switch environment, that all switches operate with the latest
supported firmware.
New Features and Enhancements
Secure Fabric OS v3.1.x provides the following enhancements and new features
relative to the previously released firmware version (v3.0.2), including:
■Support for the optionally licensed Secure Fabric OS product. Secure Fabric
OS includes the following features:
— A new, centralized fabric management model, in which all fabric-wide
management operations must originate from the Fabric Configuration
Server, or trusted switch.
— Management Access Controls to secure and limit all means of switch and
fabric management.

New Features and Enhancements

— Switch Connection Controls and Device Connection Controls, which
strictly control the switches and devices allowed to operate in the fabric.
— Standards-based authentication (using digital certificates and PKI or
Public Key Infrastructure) of all switches in the fabric, to prevent
unauthorized switches from joining the fabric.
— A workstation-based utility, PKICERT, to acquire and install digital
certificates for all switches in the fabric that do not already have them.
(The digital certificates are required to enable secure mode.)
■Support for the Fabric Device Management Interface (FDMI), allowing
centralized management of some Host Bus Adapters via the fabric, including
the download of new HBA firmware to the HBAs via the fabric.
■Enhancements to Zoning
— New commands for searching the Zoning data base
— Improved performance
— More selective State Change notifications (SCNs)—they are now sent
only to devices in zones where there has been a status change among the
online members of those zones.
■Enhancements to Web Tools—Replacement of the Fabric View panel with a
switch explorer tree. An approach that allows Web Tools to handle larger
fabrics more efficiently.
■Disabling and enabling of ports, including entire switches, may now be made
persistent across reboots and power cycles.
■Fabric Time Service
— Synchronizes time among switches in the fabric
— Fabric time may be set from a CLI session or obtained from an external
NTP server
■Enhancements to Fabric Watch
— Improved reporting of port and switch uptime statistics
■Configuration of ports to negotiate directly to R_RDY flow control mode,
simplifying operations by allowing the connection of many WAN gateway
products without requiring a Remote Switch license.

Features Summary
The following sections summarize the management features enabled on your
specific switch model (SAN Switch 2/8 EL or SAN Switch 2/8 power pak).
If You Purchased the SAN Switch 2/8 EL
The SAN Switch 2/8 EL ships with the following features enabled:
■Web Tools—Provides a graphical user interface (GUI) to monitor and manage
the entire fabric.
■Zoning—Allows partitioning of the SAN into logical groupings of devices
that access each other.
■IV_Domain_Fabric OS—Restricts the number of HP switches within a fabric
to four. To upgrade to full fabric support, you must purchase the Full Fabric
OS license, as listed in the “Optional Features” section of these Release
Notes.
■QuickLoop (present on the switch, but not enabled)—Allows private loop
hosts access to the fabric and zoning of loop ports. To enable, use the Web
Tools QuickLoop tab, or use the Telnet qlPortEnable command.
If You Purchased the SAN Switch 2/8 power pak
The SAN Switch 2/8 power pak ships with the following features enabled and
ready to use:
■Web Tools—Provides a graphical user interface (GUI) to monitor and manage
the entire fabric.
■Zoning—Allows partitioning of the SAN into logical groupings of devices
that access each other.
■Fabric Watch—Monitors the performance and status of HP StorageWorks
SAN switches and alerts network managers as problems arise.
■Full Fabric—Provides Full Fabric functionality.
■ISL Trunking—Using ISL trunking, high speed links ensure that
server-to-storage performance is efficient.
■Advanced Performance Monitoring—Provides a comprehensive tool for
monitoring the performance of storage devices within the network.

Optional Features

The following features are built into the switch firmware, but they are not enabled.
■QuickLoop—Allows private loop hosts access to the fabric and zoning of loop
ports. To enable, use the Web Tools QuickLoop tab, or use the Telnet
qlPortEnable command.
■Extended Fabric—Creates a fabric interconnected at distances greater than
5 km for 2 Gb interswitch links. To enable, use the Web Tools Extended
Fabrics tab, or use the Telnet portCfgLongDistance command.
■Remote Switch—Enables a switch to work with a separately purchased
network bridge in order to interconnect fabrics. To enable, use the Web Tools
Extended Fabrics tab. See the HP StorageWorks Common Software and
Switch Options Version 3.1.x/v4.1.x Release Notes for remote switch
limitations.
Optional Features
The following optional features are available for the SAN Switch 2/8 EL:
■Secure Fabric OS—Provides security mechanisms at all vulnerable points in a
SAN fabric, from hosts to storage at the port, switch, and fabric levels.
■power pak Upgrade Bundle—Includes licenses for ISL Trunking, Advanced
Performance Monitoring, Extended Fabric, Remote Switch, and Fabric Watch
options.
■Full Fabric Upgrade—Allows the user to upgrade their SAN Switch 2/8 EL
from IV_Domain_Fabric OS to Full Fabric OS.
Note: Options purchased separately require you to obtain a license. See the next
section, “Obtaining Optional Software License Keys from HP.”
The following optional feature is available for the SAN Switch 2/8:
■Secure Fabric OS—Provides security mechanisms at all vulnerable points in a
SAN fabric, from hosts to storage at the port, switch, and fabric levels.

Obtaining Optional Software License Keys from HP
If you’ve purchased optional software, or need to reinstall software features due to
a motherboard replacement in your switch, you will need to retrieve the software
license keys from the HP Authorization Center.
Obtain software license keys as follows:
■If you have your HP Registration Number (located on your software
entitlement certificate), go to
http://webkey.external.hp.com/welcome.asp .
■If your HP Registration Number is unavailable, contact the Authorization
Center directly:
— Canada and United States, Monday through Friday 6:00 am to 6:00 pm
MST, [phone] or [phone].
— Asia, Monday through Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, [phone] or
[phone].
— Europe, Middle East, Africa and Netherlands, Monday through Friday
9:00 am to 6:00 pm, [phone].
Removing Software Licenses
When a user removes a license from the switch, the feature is not disabled until
the switch is rebooted or a switch disable/enable operation is performed.

Cables
Optical cables for the Fibre Channel SAN Switches must be ordered separately.
Cables that are 500 meters or less for 1 Gbps and 300 meters or less for 2 Gbps
should be multimode Fibre Channel cables. Cables that are longer than 500 meters
should be singlemode.
Pluggable (SFP) modules in Fibre Channel SAN Switches. Single-mode optical
cables are connected to longwave SFP modules in the Fibre Channel SAN
Switches. multimode cables should use 50/125 optical fibers, SC Duplex
connectors with a PC finish.
Use of 62.5/125 should be restricted to situations where 62.5/125 optical fiber was
previously installed and the link lengths are to be kept shorter than 200 meters at
1 Gbps and shorter than 150 meters for 2 Gbps.
HP StorageWorks SAN Switch Software v3.1 CD
The HP StorageWorks SAN Switch 2/8 ships with the latest version of the
firmware installed. A copy of the latest version of the firmware as of this date,
v3.1.x, is also contained on the HP StorageWorks SAN Switch Software v3.1 CD,
part number AG-RR86D-BE. The v3.1.x firmware is also available on the HP
website at:

Configuration File
HP supplies the following configuration file, included on the CD:
SECFAB31\firmware\HPSAN208.doc
The HPSAN208.doc configuration file is used with the SAN Switch 2/8. This file
includes switch and Fabric Watch custom parameters/profiles. All parameters can
be downloaded to a switch when logged on as the “admin” user. HPSAN208.doc is
also available on the HP website listed in the HP StorageWorks SAN Switch
Software v3.1 CD section of these Release Notes.
Note: Performing a configdownload with these files only appends or changes
those parameters within this file. It will not change any other parameter on the switch
that may have been changed at the customer site. Remember that all switches in a
fabric must have the same configuration settings.
HP Recommendations
HP always recommends redundant fabrics and multi-pathing software for
uptime-sensitive environments. Examples of scenarios protected by redundant
fabrics include, but are not limited to:
■Add/Move/Change operations for devices or switches
■Changing the core PID format
■Changing any other fabric-wide parameters (for example, ED_TOV)
■Erroneous zoning changes/user error
■Major upgrades/changes to fabric architecture
■Physical disasters, for example, water pipe breaks above fabric A rack
HP recommends strongly against using drivers that bind by PID. There are several
routine maintenance procedures that may result in a device receiving a new PID;
the core PID format update is just one example of such a procedure. Examples
include, but are not limited to:
■Changing Compatibility Mode settings
■Changing switch domain IDs
■Merging fabrics

■Relocating devices to new ports or new switches (Add, Move, or Change type
operations)
■Updating the core PID format
Compatibility
SAN Switch firmware v3.1.x is compatible with the StorageWorks SAN Switch
software version 2.6.1 and 4.1.x, allowing both 1 and 2 Gb switches to operate in
the same fabric.

Note: HP StorageWorks 1 Gb switch models running software version 1.6d are not
supported with the SAN Switch 2/8.
The minimum supported firmware level for the StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual
Array is VCS v1.02. The upgrade of the Enterprise storage subsystem firmware
must be performed before the upgrade of the switch firmware. Please consult the
Enterprise Virtual Array technical documentation for specific information for
upgrading VCS firmware.
MIB Files
MIB files are used for SNMP applications such as HP OpenView and HP Insight
Manager. The SAN Switch 2/8 supports the following MIB files:

■FA_v3_0.mib—Fibre Alliance Framework Integration MIB

Note: Verify that SNMP-FRAMEWORK-MIB and RFC1155-SMI are loaded before
loading v4_0FE.mib.
Important Information about the IV_Domain_Fabric License
Read the following sections for important information regarding the
IV_Domain_Fabric license installed on your SAN Switch 2/8 EL model only.
Four Switch Limitation
The SAN Switch 2/8 EL ships with a the IV_Domain_Fabric license preinstalled.
The IV_Domain_Fabric license limits the number of switches that can be
connected to a single fabric to four. If more than four switches (of any type) are
added to the fabric where EL switches are installed, Web Tools generates multiple
error messages.
Note: You can upgrade the 2/8 EL switch to full fabric support by installing an
optional upgrade license. See the “Four Switch Limitation Workarounds” described in
these Release Notes for instructions on how to purchase the Full Fabric license.
Four Switch Limitation Workarounds
Use one of the following workarounds to prevent four switch limitation errors.
■Upgrade the current HP StorageWorks SAN Switch 2/8 EL
IV_Domain_Fabric license to the optional Full Fabric license. The Full Fabric
license provides full fabric functionality, with no limits on the number of
switches in the fabric.

Note: Complete installation instructions are provided with each license. After the Full
Fabric license is installed, the fabric identifies the switch as a 2/8 EL with a Full Fabric
license, providing full fabric functionality.
■In fabrics which contain five or more switches, with at least one switch
with the IV_FABRIC license installed, reduce the number of switches to four
or less.
Management Station Requirements for Running Web Tools
The workstation used to manage a fabric and configure a switch must meet the
following requirements in order to install and run Web Tools. Web Tools is
installed and runs on the switch, but is displayed in a Web browser running on
the workstation.
Operating Systems
One of the following operating systems must be installed:
■HP-UX (For the latest supported configuration, please refer to the HP
StorageWorks SAN Product Support Tables for the SAN Design Reference
Guide, part number AV-RNZEM-TE available at:

■Solaris 2.61 or later
■Windows 95, 98, or 2000
■Windows NT 4.0
Memory Requirement (Windows Operating Systems)
The minimum installed RAM memory requirements are listed next. Generally,
managing more switches means a larger memory requirement.

Disk Space
Free disk space of 5 MB or more is required to store the Web Tools program. Free
disk space of 256 MB is recommended to run the program efficiently.
Web Browsers
One of the following Web browsers must be installed:
■Netscape Communicator 4.5x, 4.7x
■Internet Explorer 4.x, 5.x, 6x
Note: The browser must be configured to work with Web Tools. For configuration
information, refer to the
HP StorageWorks Web Tools User Guide contained on the HP
StorageWorks SAN Switch Software v3.1
CD that shipped with the switch.
Java Plug-in and Java Runtime Environment
The following lists the correct version of the Java Plug-in and the recommended
version of the Java Runtime Environment for your operating system:
■Windows 2000, XP, or NT
— Java Plug-in version v1.3.1_04 or later.
— Java Runtime Environment v1.3.1_04 (recommended for best results).
■Solaris
— Java Plug-in version v1.3.1_04 for Solaris, including the Java Plug-in
patch created by Sun for Solaris.
— Java Runtime Environment v1.3.1_04 (recommended for best results).
The Java Plug-in is contained on the HP StorageWorks SAN Switch Software v3.1
CD included with the switch. The plug-in is located in the FIRMWARE
subdirectory. Double-click on the JAVAPLUGIN.EXE file to begin the
installation procedure.

SNMP-based Management

SNMP-based Management
Many SNMP Fibre Channel Management programs have the capability to log
SNMP trap information (error and status events) occurring on the switch into the
Windows NT application Event log. To enable this capability, parameters must be
set on the switch.
Note: These parameters can be set either through Web Tools by selecting the admin.
button and clicking on the SNMP Admin tab, or by using the Telnet interface along with
the agtcfgSet Telnet command.
The switch will send one copy of a trap message to each IP address that is listed in
the communities. If you enter the same IP address into more than one of the
communities, you will get multiple copies of the same trap message.
■swEventTrapLevel: (0..5)—must be set for a severity level from 0 to 5
— 0 – none
— 1 – critical
— 2 – error
—3–warning
— 4 – informational
—5–debug
■authTrapsEnabled: (true, t, false, f)—must be set to true or tto enable
sending of traps

Documentation Anomalies
Several changes have occurred since the HP StorageWorks SAN Switch 2/8
Version 3.1.x Installation Guide was printed. Please note the following:
■The name of the rack mount kit has been changed from “Universal Rack
Mount Kit” to “HP StorageWorks SAN Switch Rack Mount Kit.”
■The type of screws required for assembling the inner rails of the Rack Mount
Kit has changed from
(14) #8-32 x 3/16-inch Phillips pan-head screw with captive star lock washer
to
(14) #8-32 x 3/16-inch Phillips pan-head screw with thread lock.
■The current version of the HP StorageWorks SAN Switch 2/8 Version 3.1.x
Installation Guide indicates that the plenum is required for mounting
2/8 switches in some cabinets but not in others. However, the plenum is
required for mounting the switches in any HP supported cabinet. The reason
for this requirement is that the plenum allows air to dissipate at the rear of the
rack, thereby preventing overheating.
If the plenum is included with the switch or is ordered separately, please
refer to page 43 of the Installation Guide for information about installing
the plenum.
Issues and Workarounds
This section describes special issues and workaround solutions associated with the
SAN Switch 2/8 v3.1.x release.
Microsoft Internet Explorer
The following issue has been identified with Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 and
5.5 running on Windows NT 4.0:
Normally, when you launch a copy of the Switch Explorer applet, the left
panel displays a tree of switches in your fabric. Clicking a tree node will cause
the right panels to update to the currently selected switch. However, under
Windows NT/4.0 and IE 5.0/5.5, the right panel does NOT update for the
second and subsequent instances of the Switch Explorer. Only the first
instance updates the right panel correctly.

This issue has been identified and confirmed by Microsoft. For details, see

There are two workarounds for this issue:
■Always use a single instance of the SwitchExplorer on NT/4.0 and IE 5.0/5.5
■Update your Internet Explorer software to IE 6.0 SP1
Alternatively, it is possible that you can obtain a workaround directly from
Microsoft for this problem. Please contact Microsoft support and supply them the
information in the defect as described in the URL:

Other Issues
This section describes some additional minor issues that you might encounter and
provides methods for working around those issues where appropriate.
LTO 2 Tape Drive Support
When using the LTO 2 Tape Drive, the user must perform the following command
on both Fabric OS 3.x and 4.x:
switch> portcfggport port# (port into which the drive is plugged).
Performing this command allows the tape drive to function in Point to Point mode
rather than in Loop mode.
PKICERT Utility
Before using the PKICERT utility to prepare a Certificate Signing Request (CSR),
please ensure that there are no spaces in the switch names of any switches in the
fabric. The website that processes the CSRs and generates the digital certificates
does not accept switch names containing spaces, and any CSRs that do not
conform to this requirement will be rejected.
Telnet passwsd Command
Using the Telnet passwd command in Secure mode to change the password
results in all sessions using that password to be logged out, including the session
that changed the session.
This logging out is expected behavior. The session terminates if you change the
password in Secure mode.
