This document helps you to do the following tasks:
vRemove a failed hard disk drive and replace it with a new hard disk drive
vVerify that the new hard disk drive is working correctly
Important: Before you proceed with these instructions, review the IBM Systems Safety Notices provided in

Note: The illustrations in this document might differ slightly from your appliance model.

Replacing a hard disk drive
Before you begin
You must have the following items before you can remove and replace the failed hard disk drive:
vPhillips screwdriver to remove the failed hard disk drive from the hard drive sled and to remove the
screws and grommets from the replacement drive
vReplacement hard disk drive
Procedure
Perform these steps to replace a hard disk drive.
1. If your appliance model has a plastic cover that is in front of the hard drive bay, you must remove
it. To remove the cover:
a. Press the two plastic tabs that are on the right side of the cover to partially release it from the
chassis.
b. Slide the plastic cover to the right to remove it from the chassis.
2. Slide the lock for the hard drive sled to the left to unlock it.
3. Pull the lever to the right to pull the sled from the drive bay, as shown in Figure 1.
4. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the two mounting screws that are attached to each side of the
sled, as shown in Figure 2. Set the screws aside.
5. Remove the hard disk drive from the sled. Set the drive aside.
6. Unpack the replacement hard disk drive. When you unpack the replacement drive, make sure that
the gold connectors on the back of the drive do not touch your hands or the packing material.
7. Insert the replacement drive into the sled. The label must be on the top and the connectors must be
facing the rear. Make sure the gold connectors do not touch the chassis as you insert the replacement
drive in the sled.

8. Use a Phillips screwdriver to install two screws on each side of the sled, yet skipping the middle
screw hole, as shown in Figure 3.
9. Push the sled into the drive bay until the lever locks into place.
10. Slide the lock for the sled to the right to lock it. The hard disk drive power indicator is lit.
11. If you removed the plastic cover from the front of the hard drive bay, you must reinstall it. To
reinstall the cover:
a. Press the two plastic tabs that are on the right side of the cover to insert the cover into the
chassis.
b. Press the plastic cover and slide it to the left to lock it into place.
Results
The appliance automatically recognizes the new drive and rebuilds the array. The hard disk drive activity
lights flicker rapidly until the array is rebuilt.
The amount of time the appliance takes to rebuild the array depends on the size of the hard drive and on
the number of other programs that are also running on the appliance.
