This manual
This manual provides the user with basic and general information about 3D printers.
The technology and software are in full development so we recommend that you find
in-depth information online. The community is growing and users generally support
each other. We provide a very complete manual on our website. Online you can find a
lot of information about 3D printing.
We hope this extraordinary device brings you a lot of joy !
The ICARUS 3D team.
Before using this printer!
Safety first !
This printer is meant for the professional or hobbyist with at least basic knowledge of
electronics, mechanics and computers in general. Use by untrained persons may be
dangerous to the user or damaging to the device. Printer damage due to incorrect use
is not covered by our warranty.
Only use the 3D printer in a well-ventilated room and do not inhale the printer fumes as
they might be dangerous. Especially printing ABS seems to be more related to airway
irritation and other health risks. Do not disable or remove the installed safety features .
The printer is powered by 220V AC. Please be careful around the power supply as
some metal parts may be charged and accessible by screwdrivers or long metal
objects.
Make sure you read the chapter “Health and Safety”.

Health and Safety
CE conformity information :
The ICARUS 3D M2 is sold as a DIY printer kit and a stand-alone product. The kit
contains all the bits and pieces to construct your own 3D printer. Additional protection
can be purchased separately.
The stand-alone product is a finished product and complies with CE regulations.
! As the kit is not a finished product, compliance with the CE regulations depends on
the build-quality; also the following notes must be taken into account :
Electrical safety :
The included power supply meets all the applicable European requirements and bears
the CE-mark. It is protected against overload and short circuit and needs no
modifications to function. The working voltage of the 3D printer is 12Vdc and therefore
it's outside the scope of the Low Voltage Directive.
Always unplug before maintenance of modification !
Never pull the cable to disconnect the mains plug !
Never insert / disconnect the mains plug with damp hands !
Danger of suffocation
Keep packaging, film and packaging parts out of the reach of children !
Risk of poisoning
Keep detergents, lubricants and care products out of the reach of
children !
Electromagnetic radiation (EMC)
Conductive EMC towards the public distribution network is not an issue as this is
related to the power supply.
Manual – ICARUS 3D M2 – 2014 - www.icarus3d.eu 7

For the ICARUS 3D M2 kit version the radiated EMC depends substantially on the
build quality. It might be required to add shielding but this cannot be predicted.
Risk of injury : mechanical safety and protection
The 3D printer contains a lot of moving parts, but the force of the stepper motors is too
low to cause serious injuries. Nevertheless it is recommended to provide additional
protection against mechanical risks.
For the ICARUS 3D M2 kit version, the easiest way to ensure safety is to put the
device in a protective enclosure which completely covers the 3D printer – with or
without an access door and fume extraction. (Numerous designs can be found online.)
We can provide you with an adequate enclosure specifically built for this purpose.
Providing adequate protection is the responsibility of the assembler.
Always cut power before maintenance or modification !
Do not open the printer door while the machine is in operation !
Do not disable any safety measures taken by the
manufacturer !
The kit version of the ICARUS 3D M2 is compliant with the Machine Directive
2006/42/EC as a part of a machine. This means you have to follow all safety
precautions in this manual before using this product. The safe assembly of the
machine is your responsibility ! Do not use this product without a protective and safe
enclosure !
Risk of burns :
There is a potential risk of burns as the printer head (the extruder) can reach up to
270°C. Therefore we recommend that this device is built into a protective enclosure
which protects the user from potential injury.
Always let the 3D printer cool down for 60 minutes before doing
any sort of maintenance or modification !
The hotbed can become very hot. Do not touch the hotbed !
Do not reach into the machine while it is printing !
Health :
Manual – ICARUS 3D M2 – 2014 - www.icarus3d.eu 8

This printer is designed for use with PLA filament.
PLA is a safe and non-toxic product, there are no known health safety risks when used
in 3D printers.
This printer can be used with ABS but additional protection
needs to be installed !
Only use the printer in a well-ventilated area !
When printing with ABS there is a distinctive “burned plastic” smell. This is quite
normal, but in some cases it may cause headaches, respiratory- and eye irritation.
When printing with ABS it is advisable to add a fume hood (with active carbon filtering
for ductless extraction). Fume extraction is mandatory for use in offices, classrooms
and alike.
Never burn printer filament as toxic gas and vapors will be generated if
exposed to fire.
General safety information :
The 3D printer is not intended for use by persons with reduced physical or mental
capabilities or lack of experience and knowledge !
The 3D printer is not intended for use by children. Children should always be
supervised to ensure that they do not play or perform dangerous activities with the
appliance !
The 3D printer should not be left unattended while it is
printing !
Never use a damaged machine ! Inform the after-sales service.
Keep pets away from the machine !
The Health & Safety information is believed to be correct but does not purport to be all
inclusive and must be used only as a guide.

Product discription
The ICARUS 3D M2 is a PLA (and ABS) 3D printer. 3D printing or additive manufacturing is a
process of making a three-dimensional solid object of virtually any shape from a digital model. 3D
printing is achieved using an additive process, where successive layers of material are laid down
in different shapes. 3D printing is thus distinct from traditional machining techniques, which rely
on the removal of material by methods such as cutting or drilling (subtractive processes .
A 3D printer is a limited type of industrial robot that is capable of carrying out an additive process
under computer control also known as fused deposition modelling.
In this image you can get to know the parts of your machine. These discriptions are used
throughout our manuals and software, so please take some time to study them.

fail to find the drivers.
We prefer to install the drivers manually. Go to Start and right-click on “Computer”.
Select properties and then choose Device Manager.
You will find two devices in the COM & LPT ports section that have been flagged
because Windows could not find a driver. If Windows did somehow find drivers for the
devices, just continue in the same way as if no drivers were found.
Right-click on the first device and select “update drivers” or “install drivers” and direct
the computer to the folder “Drivers” on your desktop or on the location where you
unpacked everything. Choose the folder DRIVERS and make sure the include
underlying folders box is checked. Install the drivers. If you are prompted about a
digital signature, select continue. Repeat the procedure for the second flagged device.
In the Windows device manager you can check if the device has been properly
detected and installed. You should see “ICARUS 3D M2 USB COM PORT” & ICARUS
3D M2 USB COM BUS.
