1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 General Information
This manual describes the ITL2225/3225 System and provides instructions on
installation and operation of the system. The ITL2225/3225 System provides the
ability to attach two high capacity 4MM cartridge tape drives and a twenty-five
cartridge auto-loader directly to the SCSI bus on any host computer system. The
ITL2225/3225 can share the same SCSI bus with other installed disk or tape
drives. The system is plug compatible with any host system that supports a 4MM
cartridge tape drive.
The ITL2225 contains industry standard 4mm DDS-2 tape drives capable of
storing up to 8 gigabytes of data on a single tape. With compression the ITL2225
can store up to 200 gigabytes of user data.
The ITL3225 contains industry standard 4mm DDS-3 drives with a maximum
capacity of 24 gigabytes per tape. With compression the ITL3225 can store up to
600 gigabytes of user data.
A number of software packages support the ITL2225/3225 allowing unattended
backups and restore operations.
1.2 ITL2225/3225 System Description
The ITL2225/3225 includes: two 4MM cartridge tape drives, a ITL2225/3225
Controller board, control panel, power supply, and robotic cartridge loader with a
removable twenty-five slot carousel.
Both drives are individually adressable by the host system and can be operating
concurrently. The control panel provides the user with system status and Front
Panel access to menu selectable functions.
The ITL2225/3225 controller has both serial and SCSI-2 interfaces allowing
commands to be issued from a host. Application software must be used to operate
the ITL2225/3225 for backup and restore operations.

1.2.1 4MM Tape Cartridge Drive
The ITL2225 TLS (Tape Library Subsystem) two DDS-2 tape drives and the
ITL2225 TLS two DDS-3 tape drives used for storing and retrieving user data.
The tape drive used in the ITL2225/3225 consists of a 4MM tape transport
mechanism, recording channel, servo, formatter, controller and interface
electronics. The product is a true digital data storage device. Performance
improvements and functional enhancements necessary for data processing
applications have been added.

3. INSTALLATION
Before installing the ITL2225/3225 there are several hardware and software
parameters that the system administrator needs to check, for both the rack
mounted units and the table top units. Perform the procedures in the following
sections:

3.1 Environment Requirements
3.1.1 Environment Conditions
Ensure suitable environment conditions when operating the ITL2225/3225. It
is required that temperature, humidity, dust and debris do not exceed suitable
conditions. Sudden increases of these environments occur when computer
equipment is located near any doors, windows, or air vents.
Uncontrolled environments may cause permanent damage and potential loss of
data.
3.1.2 Position
Position the ITL2225/3225 on a level, secure bench or table away from any
doors, windows, or air vents. Debris and moisture can work their way into the
machine’s sensitive components undetected. Sudden increases of debris or
moisture can cause permanent damage and potential loss of data.
3.1.3 Condensation
Condensation is extremely harmful to removable media peripherals.
Condensation build up can cause poor read write performance as well as
permanenant damage to the media and drives.

3.1.4 Temperature
To avoid temperature problems observe the following guidelines:
•Locate the ITL2225/3225 away from doors, windows and air vents.
•Keep the ITL2225/3225 away from areas with heavy air flow such as floor
and ceiling vents.
•Do not place any electronic equipment on top of the ITL2225/3225. Excessive
heat can be generated by electronic equipment in close proximity to the
ITL2225/3225 and may cause unexpected failures.
•Do not leave cartridges in severe temperature conditions, for example in a car
standing in bright sunlight.
•Do not transfer data (reading or writing) when the temperature is changing
