251A1 AND 251A3 SUMP PUMPS
Models 251A1 and 251A3 Sump Pumps are particularly recommended for contractors and
maintenance crews where lightweight, compactness, and low air consumption are prime
factors.
Ingersoll–Rand is not responsible for customer modification of pumps for applications on
which Ingersoll–Rand was not consulted.

PLACING PUMPS IN SERVICE
•Always operate, inspect and maintain this tool in
accordance with American National Standards
Institute Safety Code for Portable Air Tools
(ANSI B186.1).
•For safety, top performance, and maximum
durability of parts, operate this pump at 90 psig
(6.2 bar/620 kPa) maximum air pressure at the inlet
with 1” (25 mm) inside diameter air supply hose.
•Always turn off the air supply and disconnect the
air supply hose before installing, removing or
adjusting any accessory on this pump, or before
performing any maintenance on this pump.
•Do not use damaged, frayed or deteriorated air
hoses and fittings.
•Be sure all hoses and fittings are the correct size
and are tightly secured. See Dwg. TPD905–1 for a
typical piping arrangement.
•Always use clean, dry air at 90 psig maximum air
pressure. Dust, corrosive fumes and/or excessive
moisture can ruin the motor of an air pump.
•Do not lubricate pumps with flammable or volatile
liquids such as kerosene, diesel or jet fuel.
•Do not remove any labels. Replace any damaged
label.
USING THE PUMP
•Always wear eye protection when operating or
performing maintenance on this pump.
•Always wear hearing protection when operating
this pump.
•Use accessories recommended by Ingersoll–Rand.
•Do not start or operate this pump unless it is
submerged.
•This pump is not designed for working in explosive
atmospheres.
•This pump is not insulated against electric shock.
The use of other than genuine Ingersoll–Rand replacement parts may result in safety hazards, decreased pump
performance, and increased maintenance, and may invalidate all warranties.

ADJUSTMENTS
AIR STRAINER
Periodically, clean the Air Strainer Screen as follows:
1. Shut off the air supply to the pump.
2. Unscrew the Air Strainer Cap and remove the Air
Strainer Screen.
3. Clean the Screen in a suitable cleaning solution and
allow to air dry.
IMPELLER ADJUSTMENT
For the most efficient operation of the pump, particularly
against high heads, it is necessary that proper clearance
between the Impeller and the Impeller Cover (52) be
maintained.
1. Pumps are assembled at the factory with 0.010”
clearance. When, due to wear, this clearance has
increased to 0.032” (1/32”), remove enough Impeller
Cover Shims to obtain the original 0.010” clearance.
White is 0.025” Brown is 0.010”
Green is 0.003” Blue is 0.005”
2. If decreased efficiency is noted, remove the Impeller
and take some of the Impeller Shims from the Arbor.
Replace the Impeller and tighten the Arbor Nut.
Rotate the Impeller. Repeat this procedure until
enough Impeller Shims have been removed to cause a
slight drag, then add one 0.010” Shim. Adjust the
clearance between the Impeller Cover and Impeller to
obtain the 0.010” clearance as explained in the
preceding paragraph. Tighten the Impeller Cover Cap
Screws alternately to 20 ft–lb (27.1 Nm) torque.
OILER ADJUSTMENT
The pump should use about 8 fluid ounces of oil during
each four hours of operation. The Oiler is adjusted at the
factory, but since flow rate varies somewhat with
temperature, readjustment may be necessary. The rate of
flow is regulated by an Oiler Adjusting Screw.
To regulate the Oiler:
Remove the Backhead and turn the Oiler Adjusting Screw
(slotted, brass screw). Turning the Screw clockwise
decreases the flow; turning the Screw counterclockwise
will increase the flow. Under no circumstance should the
Screw be backed out beyond the face of the Backhead.

Water Pump Grease
Never use ordinary cup grease as it emulsifies in water.
Automotive water pump grease is not satisfactory as it is
made for use with hot water and is too hard for use in cold
water.
Always use an air line lubricator with these pumps.
We recommend the following Portable Air Line Lubricator:
For USA – 16LUB16C
For International – No. 16LUB16C
Before starting the pump, unless the air line lubricator is
used, detach the air hose and place 15 – 20 drops of
Ingersoll–Rand No. 50 Oil into the air inlet. Unscrew the
Oil Chamber Plug and fill the oil chamber with oil.
After each eight hours of operation, or as experience
indicates, refill the oil chamber with oil.
Weekly, or as experience indicates, inject Ingersoll–Rand
No. 80 Grease into the three Grease Fittings. Inject 1 to 2 cc
into the Grease Fitting located in the Backhead and the
Fitting nearest the discharge in the Housing. The other
Grease Fitting in the Housing leads to the grease chamber
on the automatic lubricator. Pump grease into this Fitting
until grease starts to seep from the Grease Level Valve.

OPERATION
Always use an Exhaust Hose and be certain the free end of
the Hose is kept well above the surface of the liquid.
Do not allow the pump to operate at free speed (not
submerged) for long periods of time. The frictional heat
generated will damage the composition sealing members.
Prevent dirt from entering the pump. When pumping from a
ditch or natural sump, set the pump on a board or flat stone
or suspend it a few inches from the bottom of the sump.
Arranging a wire screen around the inlet or setting the
pump in a wire basket is also recommended.
If the inlet becomes clogged, stop the motor and lift the
pump from the liquid. Liquid flowing through the
discharge line will usually flush the obstruction from the
inlet.
If the pump is stopped while pumping dirty liquids, gravel
washed back through the pump by the liquid in the
discharge line may sprag the impeller and prevent the
motor from starting when the air is turned on. If the gravel
cannot be dislodged by jarring or striking the pump with a
wooden block; make sure that the air is turned off, remove
the air line from the pump, remove the Inlet and rotate the
Impeller by hand.
Be certain the Governor Valve slides freely in the Governor
Valve Bushing. A sticking Governor Valve is the most
common cause of erratic motor speed. A loose, sloppy fit
resulting from a badly worn Valve or Bushing produces the
same effect.

MISE EN SERVICE DES POMPES
•Toujours exploiter, inspecter et entretenir cet outil
conformément au Code de sécurité des outils
pneumatiques portatifs de l’American National
Standards Institute (ANSI B186.1).
•Pour la sécurité, les performances optimales et la
durabilité maximale des pièces, cet outil doit être
connecté à une alimentation d’air comprimé de
6,2 bar (620 kPa) maximum à l’entrée, avec un
flexible de 25 mm de diamètre intérieur.
•Couper toujours l’alimentation d’air comprimé et
débrancher le flexible d’alimentation avant
d’installer, déposer ou ajuster toute accessoire sur
cette pompe, ou d’entreprendre une opération
d’entretien quelconque sur la pompe.
•Ne pas utiliser des flexibles ou des raccords
endommagés, effilochés ou détériorés.
•S’assurer que tous les flexibles et les raccords sont
correctement dimensionnés et bien serrés. Voir Plan
TPD905–1 pour un exemple type d’agencement des
tuyauteries.
•Utiliser toujours de l’air sec et propre à une
pression maximum de 6,2 bar. La poussière, les
fumées corrosives et/ou une humidité excessive
peuvent endommager le moteur d’une pompe
pneumatique.
•Ne jamais lubrifier les pompes avec des liquides
inflammables ou volatiles tels que le kérosène, le
gasol ou le carburant d’aviation.
•Ne retirer aucune étiquette. Remplacer toute
étiquette endommagée.

CRÉPINE D’AIR
Périodiquement, nettoyer le tamis de crépine d’air comme
suit :
1. Couper l’alimentation d’air comprimé de la pompe.
2. Dévisser le chapeau de la crépine d’air et déposer le
tamis.
3. Nettoyer le tamis dans une solution de nettoyage
appropriée et faire sécher à l’air.
RÉGLAGE DE L’IMPULSEUR
Pour obtenir le fonctionnement le plus efficace de la
pompe, en particulier dans le cas des hauteurs de
refoulement élevées, il convient de maintenir le jeu correct
entre l’impulseur et le couvercle d’impulseur (52).
1. Les pompes sont assemblées en usine pour donner un
jeu de 0,010”. Lorsqu’à cause de l’usure, ce jeu atteint
0,032”, le jeu d’origine doit être rétabli en enlevant
suffisamment de cales d’épaisseur.

2. Si une chute du rendement est observée, déposer
l’impulseur et enlever quelques cales d’épaisseur de
l’arbre. Remonter l’impulseur et serrer l’écrou de
l’arbre. Faire tourner l’impulseur à la main et répéter
cette procédure jusqu’à ce qu’une certaine résistance
soit ressentie, puis ajouter une cale de 0,010”. Ajuster
le jeu entre le couvercle d’impulseur et l’impulseur
(comme indiqué au paragraphe précédent) pour obtenir
le jeu correct de 0,010”. Serrer les vis du chapeau de
couvercle d’impulseur alternativement à un couple de
27,1 Nm.
RÉGLAGE DE L’HUILEUR
La pompe doit consommer environ 8 ml d’huile toutes les
quatre heures de fonctionnement. L’huileur est réglé en
usine, mais étant donné que le débit varie en fonction de la
température, un re–réglage peut être nécessaire. Le débit
d’huile est ajusté au moyen de la vis de réglage de l’huileur
Pour régler l’huileur :
Déposer la tête arrière et tourner la vis de réglage de
l’huileur (vis à tête fendue en laiton). La rotation de la vis
dans le sens des aiguilles d’une montre réduit le débit;
tandis que la rotation dans le sens inverse des aiguilles
d’une montre l’augmente. La vis ne doit en aucun cas être
dévissée au–delà de la face de la tête arrière.

La graisse de pompe à eau
Ne jamais utiliser de la graisse ordinaire car elle
s’émulsionne dans l’eau. La graisse de pompe à eau
automobile ne convient pas non plus car elle est destinée à
être utilisée dans de l’eau chaude et est beaucoup trop dure
dans l’eau froide.
Utiliser toujours un lubrificateur avec ces pompes. Nous
recommandons le lubrificateur d’air comprimé portable
suivant :

Avant de mettre la pompe en marche, si un lubrificateur
de ligne n’est pas utilisé, débrancher le flexible
d’alimentation et placer 15 à 20 gouttes d’huile
Ingersoll–Rand No. 50 dans le raccord d’admission.
Dévisser le bouchon de la chambre à huile et remplir la
chambre d’huile.
Toutes les huit heures de fonctionnement, ou en fonction
de l’expérience, remplir d’huile la réserve d’huile.
Toutes les semaines, ou en fonction de l’expérience,
injecter de la graisse Ingersoll–Rand No. 80 dans les trois
raccords de graissage. Injecter 1 à 2 cm3dans le raccord de
graissage situé sur la tête arrière et dans le raccord le plus
proche du refoulement du corps. L’autre raccord de
graissage du corps conduit à la chambre de graisse du
lubrificateur automatique. Injecter de la graisse dans ce
raccord jusqu’à ce qu’elle sorte de la soupape de niveau de

FONCTIONNEMENT
Utiliser toujours un flexible d’échappement et s’assurer que
son extrémité libre est maintenue au–dessus de la surface
du liquide.
Ne pas laisser tourner la pompe à sa vitesse à vide (non
submergée) pendant de longues périodes. La chaleur causée
par le frottement endommagera les organes des joints
composés.
Eviter l’entrée des saletés dans la pompe. Pour le pompage
dans un caniveau ou dans un puisard naturel, poser la
pompe sur une planche ou une pierre plate, ou la suspendre
à quelques centimètres du fond du puisard. La mise en
place d’un grillage de protection autour de l’admission ou
l’installation de la pompe dans un panier est également
recommandée.
Si l’admission se colmate, arrêter le moteur et sortir la
pompe du liquide. Le liquide s’écoulant par le refoulement
dégagera généralement l’obstruction de l’admission.
Si la pompe est arrêtée pendant le pompage de liquides
sales, les graviers entraînés dans la pompe par le retour du
liquide pourront bloquer l’impulseur et empêcher la
rotation du moteur lorsque l’alimentation d’air comprimé
est remise en service. Si les graviers ne peuvent pas être
déplacés en secouant ou en frappant la pompe avec un bloc
en bois, s’assurer que l’alimentation d’air est bien mise hors
service, déconnecter le flexible d’alimentation, déposer le
raccord d’admission et tourner l’impulseur à la main.
S’assurer que la soupape de régulation coulisse librement
dans son fourreau. Une soupape de régulation grippée est la
cause la plus courante d’une vitesse irrégulière du moteur.
Un ajustement libre causé par une soupape très usée produit
le même effet.

manguera de suministro de aire antes de instalar,
desmontar o ajustar cualquier accesorio de esta
bomba, o antes de realizar cualquier operación de
mantenimiento de la misma.
•No utilice mangueras de aire y racores dañados,
desgastados o deteriorados.

FILTRO DE AIRE
De vez en cuando, limpie el tamiz del filtro de aire como se
indica:
1. Desconecte el suministro de aire de la bomba.
2. Desenrosque la tapa del filtro de aire y saque el tamiz
de dicho filtro.
3. Limpie el tamiz utilizando para ello una solución de
limpieza adecuada y permita que se seque al aire libre.
AJUSTE DEL IMPULSOR
Para un funcionamiento óptimo de la bomba,
particularmente cuando se trate de grandes alturas de
elevación, es necesario mantener la holgura adecuada entre
el impulsor y cubierta del impulsor (52).
1. Las bombas se ensamblan en fábrica con una holgura
de 0,010 pulg. (0,25 mm). Cuando, debido al uso, la
holgura haya aumentado hasta 0,032 pulg. (1/32 pulg.,
0,81 mm), saque suficientes calzos de la cubierta del
impulsor para conseguir la holgura original de 0.010
pulg. (0,25 mm).
Blanco indica 0,025 pulg. (0,63 mm).
Marrón indica 0,010 pulg. (0,25 mm).
Verde indica 0.003 pulg. (0,08 mm).
Azul indica 0.005 pulg. (0,13 mm).
2. Si se nota una disminución de la eficacia, desmonte el
impulsor y saque algunos calzos del impulsor fuera del
eje. Cambie el impulsor y apriete la tuerca del eje. Gire
el impulsor. Repita este procedimiento hasta que hayan
sacado los suficientes calzos de impulsor como para
causar una pequeña resistencia; añada entonces un

la cubierta del impulsor y el impulsor para obtener
0,010 pulg. (0,25 mm) de holgura como se explica en
el párrafo anterior. Apriete los tornillos de la cubierta
del impulsor de manera alternativa a 20 ft–lb (27,1
Nm) de par.
AJUSTE DEL LUBRICADOR
La bomba deberá usar unos 228 ml de aceite durante cada
cuatro horas de funcionamiento. El lubricador se ajusta en
fábrica pero, puesto que la magnitud de flujo varía algo con
el cambio de temperatura, puede que sea necesario realizar
un reajuste. El flujo se ajusta con un tornillo de ajuste de
lubricador.
Para regular el lubricador:
Saque la cubierta trasera y gire el tornillo de ajuste del
aceite (tornillo de latón ranurado). Si se gira el tornillo
hacia la derecha, se disminuye el flujo; si se gira el tornillo
hacia la izquierda, se aumenta dicho flujo. Bajo ninguna
circunstancia deberá desenroscarse el tornillo fuera de la
superficie de la cubierta trasera.

Grasa para bomba de agua
No use nunca grasa semisólida ordinaria, puesto que se
emulsiona con el agua. La grasa de bomba de agua para
automoción no sirve en este caso, puesto que está hecha
para utilizarse con agua caliente y resulta demasiado dura
para usar en agua fría.
Use siempre un lubricante de línea de aire comprimido con
estas bombas. Recomendamos el siguiente lubricador de
línea de aire comprimido portátil:
For USA – No. 16LUB16C
For Internacional – Nº. 16LUB16C
Antes de poner la bomba en marcha, a menos que se
haya puesto lubricante de línea de aire, desconecte la
manguera de aire y ponga de 15 a 20 gotas de aceite
Ingersoll–Rand Nº. 50 en la admisión de aire. Desenrosque
el tapón de la cámara de aceite y llénela de aceite.
Después de cada ocho horas de funcionamiento,o como
indique la experiencia, llene la cámara de aceite.
Semanalmente, o según indique la experiencia, inyecte
grasa Ingersoll–Rand Nº. 80 en los tres engrasadores.
Inyecte de 1 a 2 cc en el engrasador situado en la cubierta
trasera y en el más cercano a la impulsión de la carcasa. El
otro engrasador de la carcasa lleva a la cámara de grasa del
lubricador automático. Bombee grasa en este engrasador
hasta que comience a salirse por la válvula del nivel de
grasa.

FUNCIONAMIENTO
Utilice siempre siempre una manguera de escape y
asegúrese de que el extremo abierto de la manguera se
mantenga por encima de la superficie del líquido.
No permita que la bomba funcione a velocidad en vacío
(sin sumergir) durante largos períodos de tiempo. El calor
de fricción generado dañará la composición de los
miembros de la junta.
Evite que entre suciedad en la bomba. Cuando bombee de
una fosa o sumidero natural, coloque la bomba sobre una
tabla o piedra plana o suspéndala a unas cuantas pulgadas
de distancia del fondo del sumidero. Se recomienda
también la utilización de una malla metálica alrededor de la
admisión o poner la bomba en una cesta de alambre.
Si se atasca la admisión, pare el motor y saque la bomba del
líquido. El flujo de líquido a través de la línea de descarga
normalmente limpiará la obstrucción de la admisión.
Si se para la bomba cuando está bombeando líquido sucio,
puede que el impulsor haya sido calzado con la arenilla que
ha pasado de nuevo por la bomba en la línea de descarga,
evitando el arranque del motor cuando el aire está
conectado. Si la arenilla no sale agitando o golpeando la
bomba con un bloque de madera, asegúrese de que el aire
esté desconectado, saque la línea de aire comprimido de la
bomba, saque la admisión y gire el impulsor con la mano.
Asegúrese de que la válvula reguladora se deslice
libremente en el casquillo de la válvula reguladora. Una
válvula reguladora que se adhiera es la causa más común de
velocidad errática del motor. Si se realiza un montaje flojo
o malo, como resultado de una válvula o casquillo
desgastado, se produce el mismo efecto.

FUNCIONAMENTO
•Sempre opere, inspeccione e mantenha esta
ferramenta de acordo com o Código de Segurança
do Instituto Americano de Padrões Nacionais para
Ferramentas Pneumáticas Portáteis (ANSI B186.1).
•Para segurança, máximo desempenho e máxima
durabilidade das peças, opere esta ferramenta com
uma pressão de ar máxima de 6.2 bar/620 kPa
(90 psig) na entrada da mangueira de alimentação
de ar com diâmetro interno de 25 mm (1”).
•Desligue sempre a alimentação de ar e desligue a
mangueira de alimentação de ar antes de instalar,
remover ou ajustar qualquer acessório nesta
ferramenta, ou antes de executar qualquer serviço
de manutenção nesta ferramenta.
•Não use mangueiras de ar ou adaptadores
danificados, gastos ou deteriorados.
•Certifique–se de todas as mangueiras e adaptadores
são do tamanho correcto e estão seguramente
apertados. Veja o Desenho TPD905–1 para a
montagem normal da tubagem.
•Use sempre ar seco e limpo com uma pressão
máxima de 90 psig. Pó, fumos corrosivos e/ou
humidade excessiva podem arruinar o motor de

FILTRO DE AR
Periodicamente, limpe a Tela do Filtro de Ar da seguinte
maneira:
1. Desligue a alimentação de ar da bomba.
2. Desaparafuse o Tampo do Filtro de Ar e Remova a
Tela do Filtro de Ar.
3. Limpe a Tela com uma solução de limpeza adequada e
deixe arejando.
AJUSTE DO IMPULSOR
Para a operação mais eficiente da Bomba, particularmente
contra pontos altos, é necessário que a distância entre o
Impulsor e a sua Cobertura (52) seja mantida.
1. Esta distância é ajustada de fábrica como sendo 0,010”.
Quando, devido ao desgaste, esta distância tiver
aumentado cerca de 1/32”, um ajuste pode ser feito ao
remover algumas Juntas da Cobertura do Impulsor para
obter 0,010” de distância.
Branca é 0,025” Castanho é 0,010”
Verde é 0,003” Azul é 0,005”
2. Se uma diminuição na eficiência é notada, remova o
Impulsor e retire algumas Juntas do Impulsor da
Árvore. Reponha o Impulsor e aperte a Porca da
Árvore.
Gire o Impulsor. Repita este processo até que se tenha
removido um número suficiente de Juntas para causar
uma resistência ligeira. Então, adicione uma Junta de
0,010”. Ajuste a distância entre a Cobertura do
Impulsor e o Impulsor para obter 0,010 ” de distância
como explicado no parágrafo anterior. Aperte os
Parafusos do Tampo do Impulsor alternadamente com
um torque de 27,1 Nm (20 pés–lb).
AJUSTE DO RESERVATÓRIO
DE ÓLEO
A bomba deve usar cerca de 8 onças fluidas de óleo
durante quatro horas de operação. O Reservatório de óleo é
ajustado de fábrica, mas já que as taxas de fluxo variam de
algum modo com a temperatura, um reajuste pode ser
necessário. A taxa de fluxo é regulada por um Parafuso de
Ajuste de Óleo.
Para regular o Reservatório de Óleo:
Remova o Cabeçote traseiro e gire o Parafuso de Ajuste do
Reservatório de Óleo (parafuso de latão, chanfrado). Ao
girar o Parafuso no sentido horário o fluxo irá diminuir;
girando o Parafuso no sentido contrário ao dos ponteiros do
relógio, o fluxo irá aumentar. Em nenhuma circunstância,
o Parafuso deve ultrapassar a face do Cabeçote Traseiro.

Massa Lubrificadora de
Bomba D’Água
Nunca use Massa Lubrificadora de lata comum, quando ela
emulsifica na água. Massa Lubrificadora de bomba de água
automotiva não é satisfatória quando ela for feita para uso com
água quente e for muito dura para usar em água fria.
Sempre use um lubrificador de ar de linha com estas
bombas. Nós recomendamos os seguintes Lubrificadores de
Conduta de Ar Portáteis:
For USA – No. 16LUB16C
Para Internacional – No. 16LUB16C
Antes de colocar a Bomba em serviço, ao menos que um
lubrificador de ar de linha esteja a ser usado, desligue a
mangueira de ar e coloque de 15 a 20 gotas de Óleo
Ingersoll–Rand No. 50 na entrada de ar. Desaparafuse o
Bujão da Câmara de Óleo e preencha a câmara de óleo.
Depois de oito horas de operação, ao menos que um
lubrificador de ar de linha esteja a ser usado, preencha
novamente a câmara na traseira com óleo.
Semanalmente, ou como a experiência indicar, injecte
Massa Lubrificadora Graxa Ingersoll–Rand No. 80 no três
Adaptadores. Injecte de 1 a 2 cc no Adaptador de Massa
Lubrificadora localizado no Cabeçote Traseiro e no
Adaptador mais próximo da descarga no Corpo da
Máquina. O outro Adaptador de Massa Lubrificadora no
Corpo da Máquina leva à câmara de massa lubrificadora no
lubrificador automático. Bombeie a massa neste Adaptador
até que esta comece a transbordar da Válvula de Nível de
Massa Lubrificadora.

OPERAÇÃO
Use sempre uma Mangueira de Exaustão e esteja certo de
que a extremidade livre da Mangueira é mantida bem acima
da superfície do líquido.
Não permita que esta bomba funcione com velocidade livre
(não submersa) por períodos de tempos prolongados. O
calor de fricção gerado danificará os membros da
composição selante.
Evite que sujidade entre na bomba. Quando bombear de um
furo ou açude, ajuste a Bomba numa plataforma ou rocha
ou suspenda–a alguns centímetros acima do fundo do furo.
Também se recomenda a colocação de uma tela de arame
em redor da entrada ou a montagem da bomba num cesto
de arame.
Se a Entrada ficar entupida, desligue o motor e desligue a
mangueira de alimentação de ar e erga a Bomba da água. A
passagem de água da parte traseira através da mangueira de
descarga irá expelir naturalmente a sujidade da Entrada.
Se a bomba é desligada enquanto bombeando líquidos
sujos, detritos que passem pela linha de descarga podem
travar o impulsor e impedir que o motor funcione quando o
ar for ligado. Se o cascalho não puder ser desalojado por
vibração ou golpeando a bomba com um bloco de madeira,
certifique–se de que o ar está desligado, remova a linha de
ar da bomba, e a Entrada, e gire o Impulsor com a mão.
Esteja certo de que a Válvula Mestra desliza livremente no
Rolamento. Uma Válvula Mestra pegajosa é a causa mais
comum de uma velocidade de motor desafinado. Um ajuste
frouxo ou mal feito resultante de uma Válvula ou
Rolamento muito desgastados produz o mesmo efeito.

performing maintenance on this pump.
Always turn off air supply and disconnect air supply
hose before installing, removing or adjusting any
accessory on this pump, or before performing any
maintenance on this pump.
LUBRICATION
Each time the Model 251A1 or 251A3 Sump Pumps are
disassembled for maintenance, repair or replacement of
parts, lubricate the pump as follows:
1. Inject Ingersoll–Rand No. 80 Grease into the three
Grease Fittings (3 and 40). Inject 1 to 2 cc into the
Grease Fitting (40) located in the Backhead (36) and
the Fitting (3) nearest the discharge in the Housing.
The other Grease Fitting (3) in the Housing leads to the
grease chamber on the automatic lubricator. Pump
grease into this Fitting until grease starts to seep from
the Grease Level Valve (5).
2. Place 15 – 20 drops of Ingersoll–Rand No. 50 Oil into
the air inlet. Unscrew the Oil Chamber Plug (37) and
fill the oil chamber with oil.
DISASSEMBLY
General Instructions
1. Do not disassemble the pump any further than
necessary to replace or repair damaged parts.
2. Whenever grasping a pump or part in a vise, always
use leather–covered or copper–covered vise jaws to
protect the surface of the part and help prevent
distortion. This is particularly true of threaded
members and housings.
3. Do not remove any part which is a press fit in or on a
subassembly unless the removal of that part is
necessary for repairs or replacement.
4. Do not disassemble the pump unless you have a
complete set of new gaskets and O–rings for
replacement.
Disassembly of the Sump Pump
1. If the Air Strainer Screen (35) is to be cleaned or
replaced, unscrew the Air Strainer Cap (33) and
withdrawn the Screen.
2. With the Motor Housing (1) clamped in
leather–covered or copper–covered vise jaws
horizontally, remove the Impeller Cover Cap
Screws (49), the Inlet (51), and the Impeller
Cover (52).
3. Remove the Arbor Nut (54) and the Impeller (56).
4. Reposition the Motor Housing in the vise vertically.
Unscrew the Housing Nut (16) and carefully remove
the Backhead (36).
5. While grasping the Governor Assembly (17) in one
hand, gently tap on the impeller end of the Arbor (47)
with a plastic hammer and withdraw the assembled
motor and Arbor.
6. Remove the Arbor from the Rotor (42). Remove the
Impeller Key (48).
7. If required, carefully remove the the Water Seals (4)
from the Housing. Remove the Front Arbor
Bearing (44) and the Arbor Bearing Spring (58) from
the Arbor (47).
Disassembly of the Motor
In the following step, the Govenor Assembly (17)
has a left–hand thread; rotate the Assembly
clockwise to remove it.
1. Carefully unscrew the Governor Assembly.
2. Remove the Rear End Plate (14).
3. Remove the four Vanes (11) then the Cylinder (43).
4. Remove the Front End Plate (8).
5. If required, remove the Arbor Packing (9) from the
Front End Plate.
ASSEMBLY
General Instructions
1. Always press on the inner ring of a ball–type bearing
when installing the bearing on a shaft.
2. Always press on the outer ring of a ball–type bearing
when pressing the bearing into a bearing recess.
3. Whenever grasping a tool or part in a vise, always use
leather–covered or copper–covered vise jaws. Take
extra care with threaded parts and housings.
4. Except for bearing, always clean every part and wipe
every part with a thin film of oil before installation.
5. Check every bearing for roughness. If an open bearing
must be cleaned, wash it thoroughly in a suitable
cleaning solution and dry with a clean cloth. Sealed
or shielded bearing should never be cleaned. Work
grease thoroughly into every open bearing before
installation.
6. Apply a film of O–ring lubricant to all O–rings before
final assembly.
Assembly of the Motor
1. If required, reinstall the Arbor Packing (9) and the two
Arbor Packing Retainers (10), one on each side of the
Packing, in the Front End Plate (8).
2. Place the Front End Plate on the slotted end of the
Arbor (47) and the Arbor into the Rotor (42).
3. Slide the Cylinder (43) over the Rotor.
4. Apply a thin coat of Ingersoll–Rand No. 50 Oil to the
Vanes (11) and install them in the slots in the Rotor.
5. Place the Cylinder Dowel (13) in the hole in the
Cylinder.

6. Place the Rear End Plate (14) and Rear Arbor
Bearing (26) on the Rotor.
In the following step, the Govenor Assembly (17)
has a left–hand thread; rotate the Assembly
counterclockwise to install it.
7. Carefully reinstall the Governor Assembly into
the Arbor.
GOVERNOR ADJUSTMENT
When installing a new Governor Assembly, screw the
Adjusting Nut onto the governor stem until dimension “A”
equals 1–13/16” (46 mm). This will usually result in the
proper governed free speed. However, this is only an
approximate setting; to obtain a more precise setting a
tachometer should be used. Screw the nut farther onto the
stem to increase the speed; back it off to decrease the
speed. Refer to drawing TPD497.

Assembly of the Sump Pump
1. Place the Arbor Bearing Spring (58), Arbor Bearing
Spacer (25), and the Front Arbor Bearings (44) on the
Arbor (47).
2. Install the Front Arbor Bearing Seat (57) against the
Front Bearing.
3. Place the Impeller Spacer (45) on the Arbor.
4. Carefully place the two Water Seals (4) in the Motor
Housing (1) with the seals facing each other.
5. In required, replace the Impeller Hub Bushing (2).
6. Clamp the Motor Housing (1) in leather–covered or
copper–covered vise jaws, Impeller end down.
7. Carefully guide the assembled Arbor/Motor into the
Motor Housing.
8. Place the Backhead (36) onto the Motor Housing,
making sure that the Cylinder Dowel (13) seats in the
dowel hole.
9. Secure the Backhead with the Housing Nut (16).
10. Rotate the Motor Housing in the vise.
11. Reinstall the appropriate Impeller Shim (16).
12. With the Impeller Key (48) in the Arbor, reinstall the
Impeller (56) and secure it with the Arbor Nut (54).
13. Reinstall the Impeller Case (51) and Impeller Cover
(52) and secure it with the Impeller Case Cap
Screws (49).
