Install / Setup
The Intermec CN70 is a Plug-N-Play device. The Intermec device driver is
automatically installed from the device once connected to a PC (this driver must be
installed automatically once the device is connected to the PC and is not available
for download via the internet). In addition to the Intermec driver, Microsoft
Windows Mobile device drivers must also be installed. Ensure PC is connected to
the internet then obtain these drivers automatically. Windows Vista, 7, and 8 OS
users must first download and install (or update) the “Windows Mobile Device
Center” application. Proceed with the following once the “Windows Mobile Device
Center” application is installed. Note: Reference the “Intermec CN70
Troubleshooting tips”section of this guide for PC’s installed with the Windows XP
operating system.
1. Connect power cord from Intermec CN70 dock to power outlet.
2. Connect USB cable from Intermec CN70 dock to PC.
3. Insert the battery into the CN70 scanner and wait until the scanner fully
boots.
4. Use the stylus wand to select/open the time/date clock on the scanner’s
desktop and correctly set the date/time. Tip: This can also be accomplished
automatically once the device is “synced”.
5. Firmly seat the scanner onto the dock.
6. Once the scanner is seated, the scanner drivers will automatically install.
Once the install is successful, a notification will be displayed on the PC’s
desktop. Also, once “Window Mobile Device Center” is fully setup/configured
then it will automatically open and connect the scanner to the PC. This
process may take several minutes. Note: The person installing the device
must possess administrator rights on the PC to perform this action.

Download (From ASTS) To Scanner
To perform an inventory utilizing the CN70 barcode scanner, the desired (hand
receipt) data (resident in ASTS) must first be downloaded into the scanner.
1. Ensure the Intermec CN70 is connected securely on the dock, dock
connected to computer via USB cable, and powered on.
2. Navigate to the ASTS Home page then click the “Inventory”link located on
the top left side of the page.
3. On the inventory screen, locate the “Upload/Download Scanner” section and
select the “Download” tab.
4. Select “MAT/CN3- Version 4.01” from the drop
down menu. Select the check box(s) for the
desired hand receipt(s) then click the “Download
Scanner File” button.
5. Right Click the “Version 4.01 File”link. Then, select
“Save Target As” so the “Save As” window will
appear. Select the desired “Save In” (example:
Desktop) location, ensure the XML file is named
“In” (without quotes) then click the “Save” button
(click “Close” once saved).
6. Navigate to the “In” XML file (from where saved in
Step 5) then right click the file and select “Cut”.

7. On the computer desktop, click the “Start” button and select “Computer” (My
Computer) to navigate to the drive list. Locate the “Portable Device(s)” icon
and click to open the contents.
8. Select the device storage (titled “\”, not “Flash File Store”, “Flash”, or “RAM
Drive”).
9. Within the “Mobile Device”
directory, open the “Program Files”
folder and then open the
“ASTSInventory” folder. Right click
inside this folder (blank area) and
select “Paste”.
10. The CN70 scanner is now
ready for scanning inventory.
Remove the scanner from dock, and
proceed to the Conducting
Inventory section for to conduct an
inventory.

Upload (From Scanner) To ASTS
After using the barcode scanner to capture inventory information, you will need to
upload the results (“Out.XML” file) from the scanner into the ASTS system.
1. Ensure the Intermec CN70 is connected securely on the dock, dock
connected to computer via USB cable, and powered on.
2. On the computer desktop, click the “Start” button and select “Computer” (My
Computer) to navigate to the drive list. Locate the “Portable Device(s)” icon
and click to open the contents.
3. Select the device storage (titled “\”, not “Flash File Store”, “Flash”, or “RAM
Drive”).
4. Within the “Mobile Device” directory, open
the “Program Files” folder and then open
the “ASTSInventory” folder.
5. Right click the “Out_###” XML file. Select
“Cut”, then close the “ASTSInventory”
folder window.
6. Place the mouse pointer over the Desktop
(or other desired “Save In” location).
Right click and select “Paste” (verify the
file has been saved in the desired location
before proceeding).
7. Navigate to the ASTS Home page then click the “Inventory”link.

8. Click the “Upload Tab” (under the “Upload/Download Scanner” header).
9. Select “MAT/CN3-Version 4.01” from the drop down list, and click “Browse”.
Note: Before clicking “browse”, be sure that the check boxes
to overwrite the Building, Room, and Users are checked if you
want to overwrite these database fields with this information
from the scanner.
10. Locate (select) the “OUT.XML” file that was pasted to
the desktop (or other desired “Save In” location”) in step 6
and click “Open” to select.
11. Click the “Upload File” button. The scanned information
will be received into the ASTS database and the associated
(scanned) records will be updated with the data captured
during inventory.
12. Click the “Scanned Items”link (Most Recent
Upload) on the ASTS Inventory page to view the
results of the most recently uploaded
(inventory/scanned) file.
13. The scanner is now ready to be used for another inventory. Simply
repeat the upload process after the next scan. Note: Re-download the
scanner periodically when new items have been added to the hand receipts
within ASTS.

Conducting Inventory (via Scanner)
The barcode scanner application has multiple methods to conduct inventory. This
section of the guide will describe each of the inventory methods and walk through
the process on each one individually.
The Full Inventory section is the traditional ASTS scanning method to
inventory items in which the user enters the locational information, scans
items, and is given the opportunity to add notes or tag reminders for later
actions.
The Quick Scan is the fastest method to inventory many barcoded items in
the shortest amount of time. The user enters the locational information, and
then proceeds to scan all items back-to-back to quickly capture items in the
location. If necessary, the user can view the item’s details.
The Verify Inventory is used to thoroughly and quickly scan and verify the
barcoded item’s information while not updating the location information.
Full Inventory Barcode Scanning
1. After the scanner has an updated IN.XML file
(generated from the ASTS database), proceed by
removing the scanner from the docking station.
Power on the CN70 Scanner by pressing the yellow
button on the top right side of the scanner keypad.
2. Once the unit powers on and displays the desktop
screen, press the “Start” button located on the top
left-hand side of the touch screen. Select the
“ASTS Inventory” shortcut from the drop-down
menu. The ASTS Inventory program will open
displaying the Main Menu.
3. On the ASTS Main Menu, enter the scanner
operator’s name and press the “Start Application”
button.

4. On the “Choose Process” screen, press the “Full Inventory” button.
5. Enter the appropriate location
information for the items. This
information is where the scanner
operator is currently located and is
preparing to scan. Toggle between
fields by pressing the “Enter” button on
the keypad (blue button on bottom
right hand side), or by pressing
(selecting) the desired field via the
touch screen.
Note: It is important to understand the
“Installation”, “Building”, “Room”, and
“User (POC)” fields shown below will
always be overwritten within the ASTS
database. This holds true even if these
specific fields are left blank during the
inventory (scanning) process. The
“Buildup” fields however will be
automatically overwritten within the
ASTS database when the scanner is
uploaded unless the fields are populated with data during the inventory
(scanning) process.
6. Once the desired information has been entered, press the enter key on the
keypad or touch the “Continue” button at the bottom of the screen to
continue to the “Barcode Search” screen.

7. From the “Barcode Search” screen, manually
enter the barcode number into the ”Barcode”
field, or scan (utilizing scan button on keypad)
the barcode number with the scanner’s laser
imager. The barcode number, once captured,
will appear in the Barcode Search field.
Note: To use the scanner’s laser imager
function: Press and hold the blue button
located at the top center of the scanner
keypad. While doing so, tilt the scanner so
that the red laser (or light) shines across the
center of the barcode (being scanned) while
holding the scanner approximately 4 to 10
inches away from the barcode label. When
the scanner successfully scans (and captures)
the barcode number, it will make a noise
(beep), if not muted. To adjust the scan beep volume, click the “Up/Down”
buttons on the right side of the scanner).
8. Once the barcode number has been captured (or manually
entered) and appears in the Barcode search field, click the
“Enter” button on the keypad or (utilizing the stylus wand)
select the “Search” button on the screen to submit the barcode search.
9. If the barcode number searched is found, the Search Result screen displays
the item information.
Note: If the barcode is not found, refer to the Add Item section of this guide.
10. Now select the “Continue” button. Once
selected, the found item has been successfully
inventoried / scanned and tagged with a new
Inventory Date based on the actual date scanned.
Once the scanner (inventory/OUT_### XML) file is
uploaded into the ASTS database the Inventory
Date for the item(s) will be changed to the date
the item(s) was scanned/inventoried. The User
(POC), Building, and Room (etc.) fields will be
updated with the information entered (step 5 of
this process) as a result of the inventory process.
11. The Final screen in the process offers a few
options to capture additional information to the
scanned item.
a. Select the “Return to Search” button to scan the next item. If the next
item is located in a different office or area, select the “Modify Setup”
button on the “Barcode Search” screen. The location information can
be changed prior to inventorying/scanning items in the new
area/location.

b. Select the “Add Inv. Notes” button to enter an Inventory Note for the
item just scanned.
c. Select the “Assignment Change” button to create a Sub Hand Receipt
Assignment Alert (on the ASTS home page). This facilitates a Sub HR
assignment change after the scanner inventory file has been uploaded.
d. Select the “Correction” button to edit item information. This will
create a Correction Alert on the ASTS home page. This facilitates a
correction transaction after the scanner inventory file has been
uploaded.
Note: Item information allowed to be entered as a correction is:
item’s serial number, model number, nomenclature, manufacturer,
year of manufacturer (YOM), or cost, etc.
e. Select the “Reprint Barcode” button to create a “Barcode Reprint” alert
on the ASTS home page.
Note: This is simply a reminder in case the barcode label is damaged
and needs to be replaced.
f. Select the “Turn In” button to create a “Turn In” alert on the ASTS
home page.
Note: This is simply a reminder in case the item later needs to be
Turned In.

12. After scanning the last item of the inventory (prior to uploading the
data from the scanner), click the “Main Menu” button to navigate the ASTS
scanner software back to the Main Menu page.
13. Click the “Export Outfile” button. This compiles the file necessary for
upload into ASTS.
14. Click the “Close Application” button. Now, proceed to the “Upload
(From Scanner) To ASTS” section of this guide to upload the scanner
“OUT_###” file from the scanner to the ASTS database.

Quick Scan Inventory Barcode Scanning
1. After the scanner has an updated IN.XML file
(generated from the ASTS database), proceed by

screen, press the “Start” button located on the top

5. Enter the appropriate location information
for the items. This information is where
the scanner operator is currently located
and is preparing to scan.
Note: It is important to understand the
“Installation”, “Building”, “Room”, and
“User (POC)” fields shown below will
always be overwritten within the ASTS

specific fields are left blank during the
inventory (scanning) process. The
“Buildup” fields however will be
automatically overwritten within the ASTS
database when the scanner is uploaded
unless the fields are populated with data
during the inventory (scanning) process.
6. Select the radio button for either “BC”,
“SN”, or “UID”.
7. Once the desired information has been entered, press the enter key on the
keypad or touch the “Continue” button at the bottom of the screen to
continue to the “Barcode Search” screen.
8. From the “Search” screen, manually enter the
BC/SN/UID number into the ”Barcode/Serial
Number/UID” field, or scan (utilizing scan
button on keypad) the barcode number with
the scanner’s laser imager. The barcode
number, once captured, will appear in the
Barcode Search field.
Note: To use the scanner’s laser imager
function: Press and hold the blue button
located at the top center of the scanner
keypad. While doing so, tilt the scanner so
that the red laser (or light) shines across the
center of the barcode (being scanned) while

10. When the barcode number
searched is found, the Search Result
screen displays the item information.
The found item has been successfully
inventoried/scanned and tagged with a
new Inventory Date based on the actual
date scanned. Once the scanner
(inventory/OUT_###) file is uploaded
into the ASTS database, the inventory
information for the item(s) will be
updated to reflect the new date. The
User (POC), Building, and Room (etc.)
fields will be updated with the
information entered (step 5 of this
process) as a result of the inventory
process.
Note: If the barcode is not found, refer
to the Add Item section of this guide.
11. The “Item Found” screen offers a
few options to view additional
information to the scanned item.
a. Select the “View Item Info” button to
view/edit the barcode’s item
information.
b. Select the “Modify Setup” button to
return to the “Location Information”
page.
c. Select the “Main Menu” button to return
to the ASTS Main Menu on the barcode
scanner.
12. After scanning the last item of the
inventory (prior to uploading the data from the
scanner), click the “Main Menu” button to
navigate the ASTS scanner software back to
the Main Menu page.

Verify Inventory Barcode Scanning
1. After the scanner has an updated IN.XML file
(generated from the ASTS database), proceed by
removing the scanner from the docking station.
Power on the CN70 Scanner by pressing the yellow
button on the top right side of the scanner keypad.
2. Once the unit powers on and displays the desktop
screen, (using the Stylus wand) press the “Start”
button located on the top left-hand side of the
touch screen. Select the “ASTS Inventory”
shortcut from the drop-down menu. The ASTS
Inventory program will open displaying the Main
Menu.
3. On the ASTS Main Menu, enter the scanner
operator’s name and press the “Start Application”
button.
4. On the “Choose Process” screen, press the “Verify
Inventory” button.

5. From the “Search” screen, manually enter
the Barcode/Serial Number/UII into the
search field, or scan (utilizing scan button
on keypad) the barcode number with the
scanner’s laser imager. The barcode

a. The information fields on the “Search
Results” can be edited to include the
locational data.
b. By clicking the “Reprint Barcode” checkbox,
an alert will be added to the ASTS
homepage for further action at a later time.
c. By clicking the “Turn In” checkbox, an alert
will be added to the ASTS homepage for
further action at a later time.
d. Clicking the “Save/Next Item” button saves
the changes and goes back to the “Search”
page.
e. Clicking the “Cancel” button returns back
and discards the scanned item.
8. After scanning the last item of the inventory (prior
to uploading the data from the scanner), click the
“Main Menu” button to navigate the ASTS scanner software back to the Main
Menu page.

Add Items (via Scanner)
1. Power on the CN70 Scanner by pressing the yellow button on the top right
side of the scanner keypad.
2. Once the unit powers on and displays the “Start”menu, (utilizing the Stylus
wand) press the “Windows” button located on the bottom left-hand side of
the touch screen, and select the “ASTS Inventory” shortcut from the drop-
down menu.
3. On the ASTS Main Menu, enter the scanner operator’s name and press the
“Start Application” button.
4. On the “Choose Process” screen, press the “Full
Inventory” button.
