Warranty Terms & Conditions
Standard INVACARE Terms
Thi i to certify that your wheelchair i warranted by INVACARE Ltd. for a period of 2 year for part and 5
year for frame .
1. Only INVACARE chair purcha ed at full price are warranted again t defective workman hip and material .
2. If a defect or fault i di covered the INVACARE dealer from whom the wheelchair wa obtained hould be
notified immediately.
3. The manufacturer will not accept re pon ibility for damage cau ed by mi u e or non-ob ervance of the
in truction et out in the u er manual.
4. During the period of the warranty any part that have become defective, due to faulty workman hip or
material , will be renewed or repaired without charge by the INVACARE dealer.
5. The warranty will be forfeited hould any unauthori ed alteration be made to the equipment.
6. The purcha er’ tatutory right under the Con umer Protection Act are not affected.

Introdu tion
The U er’ Manual for the INVACARE Ben NG & Ben NG HD range of tran it and elf propelling
wheelchair i de igned to provide guidance on their u e and maintenance. The document al o give a brief
indication of the option that can be u ed a an alternative to the tandard feature . Ben NG & Ben NG HD
wheelchair are de igned for outdoor and indoor u e, and can be folded to be placed in mo t vehicle . The
maintenance and afety check mentioned in the manual hould be carried out within the time cale covered.
If an accident or damage occur whil t u ing your wheelchair, notify your ource of purcha e/i ue
immediately.
Important: The content of thi manual hould be read before u ing the wheelchair.

INVACARE provide a wide range of wheelchair to meet the requirement of cu tomer . However, the
deci ion on the type of model to be pre cribed re t exclu ively with qualified advi er .

This manual gives details of all the options of the Ben NG & Ben NG HD wheel hairs. It des ribes
the options, operation and adjustments that may be required. However, your INVACARE
retailer will be able to give you further information and demonstrations.

Intended Use
An indoor and outdoor configurable wheelchair offered with variou option compliant with EN12183:2009.
The Ben NG & Ben NG HD manual wheelchair ha been de igned to provide mobility and comfort for
per on with impaired mobility.
The wheelchair ha been de igned to be u ed either/or by a eated u er/carer/attendant in both indoor and
outdoor environment .
The Ben NG wheelchair ha , in it standard tran it or elf propel format (15” - 18” eat width ), been
de igned to accommodate u er who weigh up to a maximum of 127kg (20 tone), have all limb intact and
have ufficient upper body trength to maintain a afe po ition within the wheelchair without the addition of
upporting aid .
The Ben NG HD wheelchair ha , in it heavy duty tran it or elf propel format (20”, 22” and 24” eat
width ), been de igned to accommodate u er who weigh up to a maximum of 160kg (25 tone), have all
limb intact and have ufficient upper body trength to maintain a afe po ition within the wheelchair without
the addition of upporting aid .
Adaptation from the tandard Ben NG & Ben NG HD wheelchair format are available to accommodate
u er who do not meet the above criteria; the e will only be con idered after a uitable ri k a e ment ha
been carried out by the product pre criber. When pre cribing wheelchair for u e by full or partial amputee
(above or below knee, ingle or double) it i important to recogni e that lower limb amputation will affect the
itting centre of balance of the wheelchair. The impo ibility of generali ing the individual ability of a
wheelchair u er mean it i imperative that the product pre criber carrie out a full tability evaluation to
en ure that the u er i afe in the u e of the wheelchair and the ri k of the wheelchair tipping i minimi ed.
The wheelchair hould only be u ed in accordance with the afety advice given within thi u er guide. Failure
to follow the recommended advice within thi u er guide could lead to per onal injury.

1 Safety & Operating Limits
Stability and equilibrium
To en ure that the wheelchair remain table and i manipulated correctly, you mu t alway maintain good
equilibrium. Many action cau e the u er of a wheelchair to reach out, lean over or move about within the
wheelchair and out ide it. The e action will change your centre of gravity and weight di tribution of the
wheelchair. Your wheelchair ha been de igned to remain table for normal everyday u e if it i u ed correctly
taking the precaution recommended in thi manual.
1.1 Weight Limit
The maximum u er weight limit i 127kg (20 Stone) for Ben NG chair with a eat width of 15” - 18” wide
chair . The maximum u er weight limit i 160kg (25 Stone) for Ben NG HD 20” to 24” wide chair .
The wheelchair u er' degree of activity i important. For example, a very active u er weighing 75Kg may
ubject the wheelchair to more tre than a le active u er weighing 115Kg. We recommend very active
wheelchair u er to choo e an appropriate de ign of wheelchair. Your INVACARE approved di tributor will
advi e you on the appropriate model.
The addition of a cu hion will alter the centre of gravity and adver ely affect the tability of the wheelchair.
The hanging of additional load (back pack or imilar item ) onto your chair backpo t can affect rearward
tability of your wheelchair and can cau e the wheelchair to tip backward cau ing injury.

1.2 Safe Slope
There is currently no recognised test method that will ensure repeatability and accuracy for determining
dynamic stability of a manual wheelchair.
Minimum Static Stability test results for the Ben NG & Ben NG HD wheelchair are as follows:
Forward facing uphill = 11.5°

Forward facing downhill = 21°

Sideways, across slope = 18.5°

Based on these results Invacare estimate the maximum safe slope (dynamic) as 9 degrees
However, the maximum safe slope could vary depending on the ability of each individual.
Please consider the following before attempting to negotiate any slope:
Your / your attendants physical capability
Length of slope / distance to travel
Condition of surface being traversed - rough, wet or slippery surfaces etc will present additional hazards.

The limitation on reaching out from a wheelchair
hown in Figure 1 have been produced u ing a
repre entative ample of wheelchair u er . Only the
arm hould extend beyond the eat of the wheelchair.

1.4 Transferring To Other Seats
Leaning To One Side

mean of keeping the wheelchair table and balanced.
For your afety, it i e ential to be in the correct po ition.
Do not try to pick omething up from the floor if thi would up et your
balance.

guideline are followed. INVACARE doe
not recommend any particular method
for tran ferring: Thi i the re pon ibility
of a medical advi er who hould con ider
your level of di ability and type of
wheelchair. When tran ferring, either to
get out of or return to your wheelchair,
make ure that the gap between the two
eat i a mall a po ible.

When tran ferring, either to get out of or return to
your wheelchair, make ure that the manual brake
on the rear wheel are on to prevent the wheel
moving (Figure 11).
Turn both ca tor toward the eat to which you
wi h to move. Lift up the footplate (Figure 12).
Do not tand on the footplate .

1.5 Tilting On The Rear Wheels & Obsta le Climbing
Tilting with assistan e from a third person: The u er hould be itting correctly and firmly in the chair or
if unable to upport them elve , hould be trapped in po ition to prevent them falling out of the chair. If a
wheelchair u er need a i tance in tilting the chair, the a i tant mu t know how to u e hi body correctly.
Keep your back traight and bend at the knee to tilt the wheelchair. Never exert too much force. The medical
team in charge of the u er will advi e you in the method be t uited to your morphology. The INVACARE
approved di tributor will provide you with information on the ri k of u ing the wheelchair incorrectly if the
wheelchair ha removable part uch a armre t or leg re t .
These must NEVER be used as aids when lifting a they may inadvertently become detached and cau e
injury.
To tilt the wheelchair (Figure 16), a third per on
hould grip the handle firmly. Warn the u er of the
wheelchair before tilting it and remind him/her to
lean backward . Check that the u er' feet and hand
are clear of all the wheel . Place a foot on the foot
tipping lever and pu h moothly until the wheelchair
i at the point of equilibrium. At thi tage, the helper
will feel a difference in weight di tribution. Turn the
wheelchair in the direction required and negotiate
the ob tacle.
Lower the front of the wheelchair moothly, holding
the handle firmly. U e your weight on the tipping
lever to act a a counterweight. Do not lower the
wheelchair uddenly for the la t few centimetre
before returning to the normal po ition. Thi might
hurt the u er.

Method 2 - Negotiating the obsta le ba kwards
(Figure 17)
The helper hould tand on the pavement and turn the
wheelchair until the rear wheel are again t the kerb.
Tilt the wheelchair backward to the point of
equilibrium and, in a continuou movement, pull the
wheelchair until the rear wheel mount the kerb and
pa onto the pavement. Do not lower the ca tor to
the ground until you have pulled the re t of the
wheelchair ufficiently far to clear the kerb.
Note: Folding back hould alway be checked to
en ure they are engaged.

1.6 Steps, Stairs Or Obsta les Over 50mm High
We recommend that you take very great care when taking a wheelchair up or down tair . Two people are
required for thi .
ADVICE TO THIRD PERSONS: Make ure that
you grip onto fixed, non-removable part only.
U e the following procedure for going up tair
(Figure 18): Tilt the wheelchair to it point of
equilibrium. One helper (at the back) hold the
wheelchair up again t the fir t tep, gripping the
handle firmly to lift. The econd helper, holding
firmly a fixed part of the front frame, lift the
wheelchair above the tair and hold it while the fir t
helper place one foot on the following tep and
repeat the operation. The wheelchair mu t not be
lowered until the la t tep ha been negotiated and
until the chair i clear of the tair .
Es alators
Do not u e an e calator when moving a wheelchair
from one floor to another. Thi might cau e eriou
injury.
