SAFETY SUMMARY
To ensure the safe installation of the Personal Back10/Personal Back10 Plus, these instructions must
be followed:

DO NOT install this equipment ithout first reading and understanding this
instruction sheet. If you are unable to understand the Warnings, Cautions and
Instructions, contact a healthcare professional, dealer or technical personnel if
applicable before attempting to install this equipment - other ise, injury or
damage may occur.
Unless other ise noted, installation and adjustments should be made hile the
heelchair is unoccupied.
SEATING PRESSURE WARNING
Skin condition should be checked very frequently after the installation and use
of any ne seating system.
INSTALLATION WARNINGS
After ANY adjustments, repair or service and BEFORE use, make sure that all
attaching hard are is tightened securely.
DO NOT install the Personal Back10 assembly onto back canes ith an outside
diameter greater than 1-inch or less than 7/8-inch - other ise injury or damage
may occur.
The mounting position of the Personal Back10 is directly related to the chair's
stability. When the Personal Back10 is added to a TILT and/or RECLINING
chair, it may cause a decrease in the chair's stability. It may be necessary to
reposition the FRONT CASTERS, REAR WHEELS, BACK ANGLE, TILT-IN-
SPACE, RECLINE POSITION and/or SEAT DEPTH before use. Use EXTREME
caution hen using a ne seating position.
Ensure the Personal Back10 is properly secured to the heelchair BEFORE
using. The stud must slide smoothly into one (1) of three (3) upper mounting
positions. The Personal Back10 must pivot smoothly and slide bet een the side
plate locks ithout binding. Both mounting pins must fully engage back mount-
ing holes in both side plates - other ise injury or damage may occur.

DETERMINING PERSONAL BACK10 MOUNTING
POSITION (FIGURE 2)
NOTE: Total ack height (Measurement B) must e determined y therapist after a physical assessment.
1 If necessary, remove existing back upholstery or back system
2 Perform the following to find the mounting position of the Personal Back10 mounting
hardware as shown in FIGURE 2:
A Measure the total Personal Back10 height (Measurement A)
B Subtract the total Personal Back10 height (Measurement A) from the total back
height required by Therapist (Measurement B) This measurement is the distance
between the bottom of the Personal Back10 and seat cushion (Measurement C)
C Measure distance from bottom of Personal Back10 to bottom of stud
(Measurement D)
D Add Measurement D and Measurement C together This is the distance between the
seat cushion and the mounting hardware location (Measurement E)
3. From the seat cushion, measure up along the back cane to the mounting hardware location
(Measurement E). Mark this measurement on the inside of both back canes.

INSTALLING THE SIDE PLATES (FIGURE 4)
NOTE: Depth of the Personal Back10 is adjusted y placing the cane clamps in one (1) of four different
mounting positions on the side plates. Refer to adjusting the Personal Back10 depth in this instruction
sheet efore installing the side plates.
NOTE: Both side plates must e set to the same height and depth.
NOTE: Both side plates must e parallel to each other.
NOTE: When using the Personal Back10 on a wheelchair with 1-inch ack canes use the long SILVER
colored mounting olts provided. When using the Personal Back10 on a wheelchair with 7/8-inch ack
canes use the short BLACK colored mounting olts provided.
1 Align cane clamp mounting hole with the desired upper side plate mounting hole
2 From the inside of the side plate, insert a mounting bolt through the side plate and cane
clamp as shown in FIGURE 4
3 Align cane clamp mounting hole with the desired lower side plate mounting hole
4 From the inside of the plate, insert a mounting bolt through the side plate and cane clamp
as shown in FIGURE 4
5 Position the mounting hard ware onto the back cane Preform the following:
A Ensure the cane clamps are in the OPEN position
B Place the mounting hardware against the back cane so that the side plate is on the
inside of the wheelchair
C Align the bottom of the side plate mounting slots with the mark on the back cane made
in DETERMINING PERSONAL BACK10 MOUNTING POSITION in this instruction
sheet

1 Check the diameter of the back canes
2 Ensure the four (4) cane clamps are
adjusted to the same diameter as the back
canes Refer to FIGURE 3
3 If necessary, adjust the cane clamps by
performing the following:
A Place cane clamp in open position
B Slide the outer clamp half to the 1-
inch or 7/8-inch mounting position
C Repeat STEPS A-B on remaining cane

6 CLOSE the cane clamps around the back cane and use two (2) cap nuts to secure the
mounting hardware to the back cane Hand tighten
7 Repeat STEPS 1-6 to install remaining set of mounting hardware onto the opposite back
cane
8 Ensure the side plates are mounted to the back canes at the same height and are parallel to
each other
9 Using the wrench supplied, securely tighten the Personal Back10 mounting hardware

INSTALLING/REMOVING THE PERSONAL BACK10

WARNING
The position of the Personal Back10 in the three (3) different mounting bracket slots is
directly related to the chair's stability. When the Personal Back10 is added to a TILT
and/or RECLINING chair, it may cause a decrease in the chair's stability. It may be
necessary to reposition the FRONT CASTERS, REAR WHEELS, BACK ANGLE,
TILT-IN-SPACE, RECLINE POSITION and/or SEAT DEPTH before use. Use EX-
TREME caution hen using a ne seating position.
NOTE: There are two (2) different ack angle ad-
justments. Refer to ADJUSTING THE PERSONAL
BACK10 ANGLE in this instruction sheet efore in-
stalling the Personal Back10.
1 Install the Personal Back10 onto the
mounting plate so that the studs locate
into the appropriate slots as shown in
DETAIL A of FIGURE 5
2 With mounting pin in the UNLOCKED
position, align tear drop with one (1) of
the three (3) sets of side bracket back
mounting holes as shown in DETAIL B
of FIGURE 5
3 Install mounting pins into mounting holes
4 To lock, rotate the mounting pins down-
ward to the LOCKED position as shown
in DETAIL B of FIGURE 5
WARNING
Make sure hook and loop straps are
securely holding the mounting pins.

5 Secure mounting pins from rotating with

6 To remove the Personal Back10, reverse

USE OF THE PERSONAL BACK10
The Personal Back10 includes a movable foam lumbar pad attached to the back shell with hook
and loop fasteners to provide additional positioning capability To access the lumbar pad, unzip
the cover and push the foam forward, away from the back of the shell The lumbar pad will then
be accessible for making adjustments

ADJUSTING THE PERSONAL BACK10 DEPTH (FIGURE )
NOTE: The Personal Back10 depth can e adjusted in relation to the ack canes y 2-1/4-inches in
increments of 3/4-inches.
NOTE: Some ack angle adjustments affect which seat depth adjustments are availa le. Refer to Personal
Back10 angle adjustment in this instruction sheet.
NOTE: Perform this procedure on one side plate at a time.
NOTE: If necessary, remove the Personal Back10 from the wheelchair. Refer to INSTALLING/REMOVING
THE PERSONAL BACK10 in this instruction sheet
1 If necessary, remove the side plate from the back canes Perform the following as shown in
DETAIL A  of FIGURE 6:
A Remove the two cap nuts that close the cane clamps around the back cane
B Open cane clamps and remove the side plate and cane clamps from the back cane
C Remove the two (2) mounting bolts and cane clamps from the side plate
2 Select the side plate mounting hole that matches the desired back depth for both cane
clamps Note side plate mounting hole locations on the side plate
3 Install the side plate onto the back cane at the desired depth setting Refer to INSTALLING
THE PERSONAL BACK10 MOUNTING HARDWARE in this instruction sheet

NOTE: If necessary, remove the Personal Back10 from the wheelchair efore performing this procedure.
Refer to INSTALLING/REMOVING THE PERSONAL BACK10 in this instruction sheet.
NOTE: Changes to the mounting pin position and side plate mounting slot will achieve the following ack
angles:
1 To adjust the Personal Back10 to the desired back angle, select the appropriate mounting
slot and/or the mounting pin position as shown in FIGURE 7

PERSONAL BACK10 MAINTENANCE
WARNING
Check ALL fasteners eekly to ensure that mechanical connections and atttaching
hard are are tightened securely - other ise injury or damage may occur.
DO NOT continue to use this product if problems are discovered. Corrective
maintenance can be performed at or arranged through your equipment supplier.
CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS
Back Assembly.
Clean weekly with dampened cloth Wipe entire surface
Weekly visual inspection of parts including hardware, brackets, upholstery materials, foams (if
accessible), and plastics, for deformation, corrosion, breakage, wear or compression
Cover.
CAUTION
Machine ash cold. Gentle cycle. Mild detergent. NO fabric softeners or bleach. DO
NOT machine dry. Air dry ONLY out of sun.
Foam.
Replace back foam if it becomes contaminated because of incontinence The back foam is
absorbent and cannot be cleaned
WARNING
The cover is designed to protect the foam against a users incontinence and to
provide fire retardency so the cushion must not be used ithout its cover. If the
cover is torn, it must be replaced.
Continued use ith absent or damaged cover by an incontinent user can result in
sever skin irritation, infection, and other skin care issues.

REASON OF REPAIRS MADE TO ANY COMPONENT WITHOUT THE SPECIFIC
CONSENT OF INVACARE, OR TO A PRODUCT DAMAGED BY CIRCUMSTANCES
