1. Introduction
1.1. Importantsafetyinformation
PleasereadtheIMPORTANTSAFETYINFORMATIONbelow,andallWarningandCautioninformationelsewhere.
Danger:Indicatesariskofelectricshock,which,ifnot
avoided,couldresultindamagetotheequipmentand
possibleinjuryordeath.
Danger:Indicatesapotentiallyhazardoussituation
otherthanelectrical,whichifnotavoided,couldresult
indamagetoproperty.
Thisvariablespeeddriveproduct(Optidrive)isintendedforprofessionalincorporationintocompleteequipmentorsystemsaspart
ofafixedinstallation.Ifinstalledincorrectlyitmaypresentasafetyhazard.TheOptidriveuseshighvoltagesandcurrents,carriesa
highlevelofstoredelectricalenergy,andisusedtocontrolmechanicalplantthatmaycauseinjury.Closeattentionisrequiredto
systemdesignandelectricalinstallationtoavoidhazardsineithernormaloperationorintheeventofequipmentmalfunction.Only
qualifiedelectriciansareallowedtoinstallandmaintainthisproduct.
Systemdesign,installation,commissioningandmaintenancemustbecarriedoutonlybypersonnelwhohavethenecessary
trainingandexperience.TheymustcarefullyreadthissafetyinformationandtheinstructionsinthisGuideandfollowall
informationregardingtransport,storage,installationanduseoftheOptidrive,includingthespecifiedenvironmentallimitations.
DonotperformanyflashtestorvoltagewithstandtestontheOptidrive.Anyelectricalmeasurementsrequiredshouldbecarried
outwiththeOptidrivedisconnected.
Electricshockhazard!DisconnectandISOLATEtheOptidrivebeforeattemptinganyworkonit.Highvoltagesarepresentatthe
terminalsandwithinthedriveforupto10minutesafterdisconnectionoftheelectricalsupply.Alwaysensurebyusingasuitable
multimeterthatnovoltageispresentonanydrivepowerterminalspriortocommencinganywork.
Wheresupplytothedriveisthroughaplugandsocketconnector,donotdisconnectuntil10minuteshaveelapsedafterturningoff
thesupply.
Ensurecorrectearthingconnections.Theearthcablemustbesufficienttocarrythemaximumsupplyfaultcurrentwhichnormally
willbelimitedbythefusesorMCB.SuitablyratedfusesorMCBshouldbefittedinthemainssupplytothedrive,accordingtoany
locallegislationorcodes.
Donotcarryoutanyworkonthedrivecontrolcableswhilstpowerisappliedtothedriveortotheexternalcontrolcircuits.
WithintheEuropeanUnion,allmachineryinwhichthisproductisusedmustcomplywithDirective98/37/EC,SafetyofMachinery.
Inparticular,themachinemanufacturerisresponsibleforprovidingamainswitchandensuringtheelectricalequipmentcomplies
withEN60204‐1.
ThelevelofintegrityofferedbytheOptidrivecontrolinputfunctions(excludingthe‘SafeTorqueFreeInput’)–forexample
stop/start,forward/reverseandmaximumspeed,isnotsufficientforuseinsafety‐criticalapplicationswithoutindependent
channelsofprotection.Allapplicationswheremalfunctioncouldcauseinjuryorlossoflifemustbesubjecttoariskassessmentand
furtherprotectionprovidedwhereneeded.
Thedrivenmotorcanstartatpowerupiftheenableinputsignalispresent.
TheSTOPfunctiondoesnotremovepotentiallylethalhighvoltages.ISOLATEthedriveandwait10minutesbeforestartingany
workonit.NevercarryoutanyworkontheDrive,MotororMotorcablewhilsttheinputpowerisstillapplied.
TheOptidrivecanbeprogrammedtooperatethedrivenmotoratspeedsaboveorbelowthespeedachievedwhenconnectingthe
motordirectlytothemainssupply.Obtainconfirmationfromthemanufacturersofthemotorandthedrivenmachineabout
suitabilityforoperationovertheintendedspeedrangepriortomachinestartup.
Donotactivatetheautomaticfaultresetfunctiononanysystemswherebythismaycauseapotentiallydangeroussituation.
TheOptidriveODP‐2hasanIngressProtectionratingofIP55,andareintendedforindooruseonly
Whenmountingthedrive,ensurethatsufficientcoolingisprovided.Donotcarryoutdrillingoperationswiththedriveinplace,
dustandswarffromdrillingmayleadtodamage.
Theentryofconductiveorflammableforeignbodiesshouldbeprevented.Flammablematerialshouldnotbeplacedclosetothe
drive
Relativehumiditymustbelessthan95%(non‐condensing).
Ensurethatthesupplyvoltage,frequencyandno.ofphases(1or3phase)correspondtotheratingoftheOptidriveasdelivered.
NeverconnectthemainspowersupplytotheOutputterminalsU,V,W.
Donotinstallanytypeofautomaticswitchgearbetweenthedriveandthemotor
Wherevercontrolcablingisclosetopowercabling,maintainaminimumseparationof100mmandarrangecrossingsat90degrees
Ensurethatallterminalsaretightenedtotheappropriatetorquesetting
DonotattempttocarryoutanyrepairoftheOptidrive.Inthecaseofsuspectedfaultormalfunction,contactyourlocalInvertek

•TheOptidriveshouldbemountedinaverticalpositiononlyonaflat,flameresistantvibrationfreemountingusingtheintegralholes.
•TheOptidrivemustbeinstalledinapollutiondegree1or2environmentonly.
•DonotmountflammablematerialclosetotheOptidrive
•Ensurethattheminimumcoolingairgaps,asdetailedinsection3.6areleftclear

•Providesuitableclean,moistureandcontaminantfreecoolingairsufficienttofulfilthecoolingrequirementsoftheOptidrive

4. ElectricalInstallation
4.1. GroundingtheDrive
Thismanualisintendedasaguideforproperinstallation.InvertekDrivesLtdcannotassumeresponsibilityforthecomplianceor
thenon‐compliancetoanycode,national,localorotherwise,fortheproperinstallationofthisdriveorassociatedequipment.A
hazardofpersonalinjuryand/orequipmentdamageexistsifcodesareignoredduringinstallation.
ThisOptidrivecontainshighvoltagecapacitorsthattaketimetodischargeafterremovalofthemainsupply.Beforeworkingon
thedrive,ensureisolationofthemainsupplyfromlineinputs.Waitten(10)minutesforthecapacitorstodischargetosafe
voltagelevels.Failuretoobservethisprecautioncouldresultinseverebodilyinjuryorlossoflife.
Onlyqualifiedelectricalpersonnelfamiliarwiththeconstructionandoperationofthisequipmentandthehazardsinvolved
shouldinstall,adjust,operate,orservicethisequipment.Readandunderstandthismanualandotherapplicablemanualsin
theirentiretybeforeproceeding.Failuretoobservethisprecautioncouldresultinseverebodilyinjuryorlossoflife.
4.1.1. GroundingGuidelines
ThegroundterminalofeachOptidriveshouldbeindividuallyconnectedDIRECTLYtothesitegroundbusbar(throughthefilterifinstalled).
Optidrivegroundconnectionsshouldnotloopfromonedrivetoanother,orto,orfromanyotherequipment.Groundloopimpedancemust
confirmtolocalindustrialsafetyregulations.TomeetULregulations,ULapprovedringcrimpterminalsshouldbeusedforallgroundwiring
connections.
ThedriveSafetyGroundmustbeconnectedtosystemground.Groundimpedancemustconformtotherequirementsofnationalandlocal
industrialsafetyregulationsand/orelectricalcodes.Theintegrityofallgroundconnectionsshouldbecheckedperiodically.
4.1.2. ProtectiveEarthConductor
TheCrosssectionalareaofthePEConductormustbeatleastequaltothatoftheincomingsupplyconductor.
4.1.3. SafetyGround
Thisisthesafetygroundforthedrivethatisrequiredbycode.Oneofthesepointsmustbeconnectedtoadjacentbuildingsteel(girder,joist),
afloorgroundrod,orbusbar.Groundingpointsmustcomplywithnationalandlocalindustrialsafetyregulationsand/orelectricalcodes.
4.1.4. MotorGround
Themotorgroundmustbeconnectedtooneofthegroundterminalsonthedrive.
4.1.5. GroundFaultMonitoring
Aswithallinverters,aleakagecurrenttoearthcanexist.TheOptidriveisdesignedtoproducetheminimumpossibleleakagecurrentwhilst
complyingwithworldwidestandards.Thelevelofcurrentisaffectedbymotorcablelengthandtype,theeffectiveswitchingfrequency,the
earthconnectionsusedandthetypeofRFIfilterinstalled.IfanELCB(EarthLeakageCircuitBreaker)istobeused,thefollowingconditions

4.1.6. ShieldTermination(CableScreen)
Thesafetygroundterminalprovidesagroundingpointforthemotorcableshield.Themotorcableshieldconnectedtothisterminal(drive
end)shouldalsobeconnectedtothemotorframe(motorend).UseashieldterminatingorEMIclamptoconnecttheshieldtothesafety
groundterminal.
4.2. WiringPrecautions
ConnecttheOptidriveaccordingtosection4.3and4.4,ensuringthatmotorterminalboxconnectionsarecorrect.Therearetwoconnections
ingeneral:StarandDelta.Itisessentialtoensurethatthemotorisconnectedinaccordancewiththevoltageatwhichitwillbeoperated.For
moreinformation,refertosection4.5MotorTerminalBoxConnections.
Itisrecommendedthatthepowercablingshouldbe4‐corePVC‐insulatedscreenedcable,laidinaccordancewithlocalindustrialregulations
andcodesofpractice.
4.3. IncomingPowerConnection
•Forasinglephasesupply,powershouldbeconnectedtoL1/L,L2/N.
•For3phasesuppliespowershouldbeconnectedtoL1,L2,andL3.Phasesequenceisnotimportant.
•ForcompliancewithCEandCTickEMCrequirements,asymmetricalshieldedcableisrecommended.
•AfixedinstallationisrequiredaccordingtoIEC61800‐5‐1withasuitabledisconnectingdeviceinstalledbetweentheOptidriveand
theACPowerSource.Thedisconnectingdevicemustconformtothelocalsafetycode/regulations(e.g.withinEurope,EN60204‐1,
Safetyofmachinery).
•Thecablesshouldbedimensionsaccordingtoanylocalcodesorregulations.Guidelinedimensionsaregiveninsection11.4.
•Suitablefusestoprovidewiringprotectionoftheinputpowercableshouldbeinstalledintheincomingsupplyline,accordingtothe
datainsection11.4.Thefusesmustcomplywithanylocalcodesorregulationsinplace.Ingeneral,typegG(IEC60269)orULtypeT
fusesaresuitable;howeverinsomecasestypeaRfusesmayberequired.Theoperatingtimeofthefusesmustbebelow0.5
seconds.
•Whereallowedbylocalregulations,suitablydimensionedtypeBMCBcircuitbreakersofequivalentratingmaybeutilisedinplaceof
fuses,providingthattheclearingcapacityissufficientfortheinstallation.
•Whenthepowersupplyisremovedfromthedrive,aminimumof30secondsshouldbeallowedbeforere‐applyingthepower.A
minimumof10minutesshouldbeallowedbeforeremovingtheterminalcoversorconnection.
