Ifyouhaven’talreadychargedyourdevice’sbattery,please
followtheinstructionsintheQuickStartGuidethatcamein
thebox.Whenthedeviceischarging,thelightindicatoron
thefrontofthedevicewillturnorangeandachargingsymbol
willappearonthebatteryiconinthelowerrightcornerof
thescreen.Thelightindicatorturnsgreenoncethebatteryis
fullycharged.

Registration

alsosupportsvariousprotectedcontenttypes.Inorderto

makeuseofthisfeatureyoumustcreateanIDandregister
asdescribedontheHowtogetContentleafletthatyouwill
findinthebox.

Chapter1–YourIREXDigitalReader800S
Inthischapter,youwilllearnaboutthedifferentpartsof
yourIREXDigitalReader,aswellashowtousetheflipbar,
Menu,andotheron‐screenfeatures.
Charging

1.ChargeyourdevicebyusingtheincludedUSBcableand
pluggingitintoacomputeroranelectricaloutletusing
thewalladapterwhichissuppliedinthebox.Thelight
abovetheflipbarwillturnorangeindicatingthatthe
batteryischarging.
2.Continuecharginguntiltheindicatorlightturnsgreen.
Thedevicecanbeusedwhilecharging.
Whenthedevicehasacompletelyemptybattery,itcannot
turnitselfon.Chargethebattery.Whentheindicatorlight
turnsorange,thedevicecanbeused,thoughnottoitsfull
capacity.Agreenlightindicatesthatthebatteryisfully
charged.Ifthedevicedoesnothavesufficientpower,the
followingimage(orsimilar)willappear:

ButtonsandSwitches

PowerSwitch–Turnsthedeviceonandoff.Toturnyour
deviceon,slidetheswitchtotheleftandrelease.TheHome
screenwillappearwhenthedeviceisreadyforuse.Toturn
thedeviceoff,slidetheswitchtotheleftandholdfortwo
seconds.Thedevicewillturnitselfoff.
Ifyourdevicedoesnotturnonorhasfrozen,resetitby
slidingthepowerswitchtotheleftandholdingitforthree
seconds.
KeyLock–Locksthebuttonsonthedevice.Slidethepower
switchtotherighttolockthedevice.
USBPort–Chargesthedevice.Tochargethebattery,
connectthedeviceintoacomputerorwalladapteraccessory
usingtheincludedUSBcable.Plugthewalladapterintoan
electricaloutlet.Thelightabovetheflipbarwillturnorange
indicatingthatthebatteryischarging.Continuecharging
untiltheindicatorlightturnsgreen.Thedevicecanbeused
whilecharging.
Thedevicecanbeconnectedtoacomputertotransfer
content.IftheUSBportonyourcomputeralsosupplies
power,thedevicewillchargeusingtheconnection.When
thedeviceisconnectedtoyourcomputer,youwillnotbe
abletouseit.Ejectthedevicedrivefromyourcomputerto
resumeuse.

Flipbar–Movestheon‐screencursorup,down,andside‐to‐
side.Opensitems,pushesbuttons,andconfirmsMenu
choices.Turnspagesinreadingmaterial.
Menu–Containstoolsforchangingviews,sorting,deleting
files,orothers.Menuoptionschangedependingonyour
locationwithinthedevice.
Stylus–Choosesitemsonthescreenandallowsyoutoclick
onscreen‐buttons.
IndicatorLight–Indicateswhatyourdeviceiscurrently
doing.Asteadyredlightindicatesthatthebatteryisvery
low,whileasteadyorangeindicatesthatthebatteryisbusy
charging.Asteadygreenlightindicatesthatthebatteryis
fullycharged.Whenthedeviceisbusyopeningaverylarge
itemorinthemiddleofatime‐consumingprocess,the
indicatorlightwillflashgreen.
MicroSDCard–Storesallreadingcontent.Thiscardisfound
behindthedooronthebackofthedevice.Toexchange
memorycards,removethesmallscrewbeforecarefully
openingthedoor.Thestickerontheinsideofthedevice
indicatesthemicroSDcard’slocation.Toejectthecard,
gentlypushthecardandrelease.Youcannowpullitfree
fromthedevice.Toinsertanewcard,placeitintothedevice
andgentlypushituntilitclicksintoplace.Ifyou
disconnectedthebatterycableduringtheprocessof

exchangingcards,besuretoreconnectthecableandreset
thetimeanddateonyourdevice.
OnScreenFeatures
Menus
AboveisanexampleofwhatyouwouldseeifyouopenedtheMenuwhilereadinga
book.IfyouopentheMenufromanotherlocation,youwillbeallowedtochoose
fromdifferentfunctionsthanseenhere.
OpentheMenubypressingtheMenubuttononetime.Use
theflipbartomovetoanaction,andpresstheflipbaronceto
chooseit.PresstheMenubuttontoclosetheMenu.
TheMenucanalsobeusedwiththestylusthatcamewith
yourdevice.ToopentheMenu,tapontheMenuiconortext
inthelowerleft‐handcornerofyourscreen.Choosean
actionbytappingoncewiththestylus.ToclosetheMenu,

tapontheMenuiconortextinthelowerleft‐handcornerof
yourscreen.
Keyboard
Thekeyboardwillappearwhenyoutapinasearchbox,as
indicatedabove.TappingoutsidethekeyboardintheeBook
Mallorawebpagewillclosethekeyboard.
Numbers,SpecialCharacters,andSymbols–Theseare
foundbytappingononthekeyboard.Toswitchback
toregularcharacters,tapon.
StatusIndicators
Statusindicatorsarefoundinthelowerrightcornerofyour
screenandgiveyouanoverviewofthestatusofyourdevice.

BatteryIndicator
Tellsyouhowmuchbatterypowerisavailable.Whenitis
connectedtoapowersource,thebatteryindicatorwill
displayachargingsymbolsoyouknowitisreceivingpower.
ScreenRotation
Youcanswitchfromportraittolandscapemodeanytimeby
choosingRotatefromtheMenu.

TheHomeScreen
TheHomescreenprovidesentrypointstoallthedifferent
categoriesandsectionsonyourdevice.Thefirsticons(Books,
News,andImages)arecategoriesthatshowalistofall
books,periodicals,andimagesyouown.ThePersonal
DocumentsiconopensthePersonalDocumentsfolderonthe
SDcard.TheHelpiconopenstheHelpfolderontheSDcard.
YouwillalsofindSearch,andSettings.Eachofthesesections
isdescribedindetailinthismanual.FromtheHomescreen,
youcanalsochooseContinueReading,whichallowsyouto
continuereadinganopenitem.
ViewingYourContent
TheHomescreenhascategoryiconsallowingyoutoseethe
differenttypesofcontentsavedonyourdevice.Whenyou
selectacategory,youwillseeallofyourrelevantitems
appearonthescreen,similartotheillustrationbelow.

ScreenFeatures
Header
Theheaderliststhecategoryyouarecurrentlybrowsing
(suchasBooksorNews).Followingthisdescriptionis
supplementalinformation.Intheexampleabove,Books
(category)areorderedbytitle(supplementalinformation).
CoverThumbnailorIcon
Eachitemyouhavesavedonyourdevicewillberepresented
byanicon.Ifyouhaveneveropenedtheitembefore,a
defaulticonwillbeused.Itemsthathavealreadybeen

openedwillberepresentedbyanimageofthecoverorfirst
page.
TitleandAuthor
Theitem’snameortitleislistedfirst,withtheauthorlisted
underneaththetitle.
UnreadTitle
Anitemthathasneverbeenopenedhasadefaulticon.
Search
Taponthisicontosearchforanitemonthedevice.
Index
Whenyourcontenthasbeensortedbytitleorbyauthor,an
indexbarwillappearonthefarrightsideofthescreen.Tap
onaletterwiththestylustoseealistofallbooksthatbegin
withthatletter.Lettersthatarenotrepresentedbyyourlist
ofitemswillbeingray.
PageIndicator
Thisindicatordisplayshowmanypagesareineachcategory.
Eachpagecontainsnineitems.Movetothenextorprevious
pagebytappingonthearrowswithyourstylusorbyflipping
andholdingtheflipbarforhalfofasecond.
ManagingYourContent
WhenselectedfromtheHomescreen,yourBooks,News,
Images,PersonalDocuments,andHelpitemswillappearon

thescreen.Youcansortyouritems,changetheappearance
oftheitems,anddeleteitemsyounolongerwishtokeep.
SortingYourContent
Bydefault,thedevicewillsortyouritemsbyname.Youcan
easilychangethisbyfollowingtheinstructionsbelow.
HowtoSort
1.OpentheMenubyusingtheMenubuttonorbytapping
ontheMenuicon.
2.Choosethewayyouwanttosorttheitems:SortbyTitle,
SortbyAuthor,SortbyDateAdded,orSortbyRecently
Read.TheMenuwillcloseandthescreenwillrefresh.
ChangingtheView
Yourdevicecanshowyouritemsintwodifferentviews:as
listsorascoverthumbnails.Itemsdisplayedasalistwill
showthenameandauthorforeachitem.Switchingtocover
thumbnailswilldisplayalargethumbnailoftheitemcover
(orfirstpage)withthenameundertheicon.
HowtoChangeView
1.OpentheMenubyusingtheMenubuttonorbytapping
ontheMenuicon.
2.ChooseViewasListorViewasCovers.TheMenuwill
closeandthescreenwillrefresh.

DeletingContentfromYourDevice
Topermanentlyremoveitemsfromyourdevice:
1.OpentheMenubyusingtheMenubuttonorbytapping
ontheMenuicon.
2.ChooseDelete.TheMenuwillclose.Itemsthatcanbe
deletedareindicatedwithadeleteicon.
3.Tapthedeleteiconorpresstheflipbaroneachitemyou
wanttodelete.Restoretheitembytappingorpressing
theflipbarasecondtime.
4.ChooseDoneDeleting,locatedatthetopofthepage.
5.Confirmthatyouwanttodeletetheitem(s).
