To increase the life of your machine
1. Do not store this machine in areas exposed to direct sunlight or high humidity. Never use or store
the machine near a heater, an iron, a halogen lamp or other hot things.
2. Use only neutral soaps or detergents to clean the machine. Benzene, solvents and scouring powders
can damage the case and the machine and therefore should never be used.
3. Do not drop or bump the machine.
4. Always consult the manual to replace or fi x the hopping foot, needle or any other part of the
machine. If necessary contact an authorized Janome representa ve or Janome technical support.

GROUNDING PIN
This product is for use on a nominal 120 V or nominal 220 V circuit, and has a grounding plug that looks like the plug illustrated
in sketch A above. A temporary adapter, which looks like the adapter illustrated in sketches B and C, may be used to connect this
plug to a 2-pole receptacle as shown in sketch B if a properly grounded outlet is not available. The temporary adapter should
be used only un l a properly grounded outlet can be installed by a qualifi ed electrician. The green colored rigid ear, lug, and
the like, extending from the adapter, must be connected to a permanent ground such as a properly grounded outlet box cover.
Whenever the adapter is used, it must be held in place by the metal screw.
IMPORTANT: In Canada, the use of a temporary adapter is not permi ed by the
Canadian Electric Code.
To repair or adjust the machine
If the machine breaks down or needs adjustment, fi rst check the troubleshoo ng chart in the appendix to
inspect and adjust the machine yourself.

Installation and Setup
Carriage
You should have already set up the Janome Quilt Maker Pro 5’ Quil ng Frame™. Refer to the frame manual
for detailed instruc ons about se ng up the frame.
To install the carriage and machine on the frame
1. Place the carriage on the table rails, ensuring
that the carriage s tch regula on encoder faces
the back of the frame.
2. Place the machine on the carriage.
CAUTION: The Quilt Maker Pro 16 is heavy.
Never a empt to li it alone. Always use
two people when li ing. Always li from
the throat of the machine, not from the
handlebars or needle bar.
3. Plug the end of the single ribbon cable from
the machine s tch regulator encoder connector
at the back of the machine into the s tch
regula on encoder on the carriage.
NOTE: The 9 pin cable plugs into a a serial connector socket on the back of the machine (see item
30 on the previous page). The ribbon cable then runs to the machine encoder on the right rear
wheel of the machine. The Y connec on plugs into the machine encoder. Lastly the single end of
the ribbon cable runs to the carriage encoder.
IMPORTANT: If you ever need to remove the machine from the carriage, disconnect the ribbon
cable from the s tch regulator at the back of the carriage. Failure to unplug the cable when
removing the machine from the carriage could result in damage to the cable, encoders, and
carriage.
IMPORTANT: The connector is keyed to ensure correct alignment. Make sure the keyed por on of
the cable connector aligns with the keyed por on of the encoder connector. Do not force.

Power Cord
To install the power cord
• Insert the cord into the power connector on the rear of the machine. Plug the three-prong end into
power source. Do not turn on the machine un l the front handlebars and display are installed.
To disconnect the power cord
• Unplug the cord from the power outlet.
For more informa on, see Power Switch in the Using Your Machine sec on of this manual.
NOTE: Make sure that the machine is off before plugging into power source. The rear power switch
should be in the 0, or off , posi on.
Handlebars and Display
CAUTION: To prevent any electrical damage to the handlebars, always turn off all power to the
machine when connec ng or disconnec ng the handlebars.
To install the handlebars
1. Ensure that the machine is unplugged from the electrical outlet.
2. Locate the four M4 X 16 socketed cap screws
and the 3mm hex tool. Line up the four holes
on the front handlebar bracket with the tapped
holes on the front of the machine.
3. Start all four screw into the frame before
 ghtening the screws.
4. Use the included 4 mm Hex tool to securely
fasten the handles to the front of the machine.

5. A er the bolts are in place, plug the cable
into the USB-style connec on located on the
front-le side of the machine. The upper small
mini USB connec on on the display is used to
connect to the machine. The bo om regular
USB connec on on the right side of the display
is for USB power only, no data.
6. Remove the protec ve plas c from the touch-screen display before using.
To use the handlebar bu ons
Op onal Accessory: Rear Handlebars and Display
To install the op onal rear handlebars and display
IMPORTANT: Install the rear handlebars and display a er the front handlebars and display have
been installed.
1. Check that the machine is unplugged from the electrical outlet.
CAUTION: All power to the machine must be turned off when installing the rear handlebars. Failure
to do so can result in damage to the machine.
2. The rear handlebars come mounted to a bracket. Line up the four holes in the bracket with those on
the rear of the machine.

Press the Speed Up or Speed Down bu ons to change the
s tches per minute se ng (manual mode) or s tches per
inch (regulated mode).

3. Slide the four bolts into holes un l they stop. Hand  ghten, and then use the 3 mm wrench to securely
fasten the handles to the back of the machine.
4. A er the four bolts are in place, plug the small connector end of the cable into the port on the le side
of the display. Push the plug securely into place.
5. Securely plug the other end of the cable into the port on the back of the machine below
the handlebars.
NOTE: See the instruc ons that accompany the Rear Handlebars and Display.
IMPORTANT: A er the rear handlebars have been completely installed and plugged in, test them by
turning on the Quilt Maker Pro 16 and looking at the rear display. If nothing appears on the screen,
check that both the front and rear handlebar cables are plugged in securely, that your machine is
turned on, and that the power cord is plugged into the machine as well as a power source.

Thread Mast
To install the thread mast
1. Locate the two threaded holes about mid-way
back on the le side of the machine.
2. The thread mast comes with a standoff , a
screw with washer and spool support.
3. Screw the standoff onto the bo om of the
thread mast fi rmly.
4. Place the standoff into the hole in the spool
support and fi x it with the Phillip’s screw with
washer from the underside.

5. Rotate the thread mast loops un l they are
directly over the spol pins and fi rmly  ghten
the Philip’s screw.
Op onal Accessory: Horizontal Spool Pin
An op onal horizontal spool pin is available for metallic and specialty threads wound on a spool
(not a cone).
To install the op onal horizontal spool pin
1. Remove the nut and washer from the post.
Place washer over the threaded hole on the top
of machine.
2. Replace nut and screw the post into the
threaded hole. Tighten the nut to secure.
3. Place the clamp on the post and place
remaining pin in the clamp. Tighten the screw
to hold in place.
4. Elevate the end of the pin slightly above
horizontal to keep spool from falling off .
5. Thread the machine beginning at horizontal spool pin, bypassing the thread mast. When using
delicate threads with the Horizontal Spool Pin, skip thread guide A. Thread the top hole only of the
three-hole thread guide B, back to front. (See Right side view, items 2 and 3.)
6. Con nue threading the machine as described in steps 3 through 6 in the sec on named Threading
Your Machine later in this manual.

Op onal Accessory: Laser Stylus
The laser light (for use with paper pantographs) a aches to a moun ng post with a clamp. The moun ng
post a aches to a threaded hole on the thread-path side of the Quilt Maker Pro 16.
To install the op onal laser stylus
1. Place the nut on the laser stylus post with the
washer under it and thread the laser post into
the threaded hole, near the rear wheel base.
Turn un l securely in place. Lock in place with
nut.
NOTE: The washer will be under the nut to
protect the machine paint.
2. Insert the laser stylus into the laser clamp.
3. Slide the laser clamp over the post to the desired height and ensure it is secure.
4. Plug the laser’s cable into the Laser Stylus Power Connector. When this cable is plugged in, the laser
receives power and is turned on. To turn off the laser, unplug the cable.
The laser projects a straight laser beam visible as a dot on surfaces it hits. Use the laser dot as a guide, or
stylus, to trace printed pantograph designs and s tch the con nuous pa ern onto a quilt.
The laser stylus can move in any direc on by rota ng the clamp on the post and pivo ng the laser up or
down. To make an adjustment, loosen the black thumbscrews, posi on, and re ghten.
IMPORTANT: A label is a ached to the laser’s case and contains an arrow that indicates the direc on
the laser light will shine when energized. The label must remain in place on the laser. Removing the
label voids the laser’s warranty.

Laser Opera on and Safety
Be sure the laser is a ached to the machine and pointed downward toward the table before connec ng it
to the port. Never point it in a direc on that would project the beam into someone’s eyes. If the laser
should stop working, ensure the plug is fi rmly seated into the Quilt Maker Pro 16 laser port.
Laser Focus and Image Size
Focus the laser by turning the threaded housing surrounding the lens clockwise or counterclockwise.
The laser image can be adjusted to project a bigger or smaller dot, or focal size. The direc on of rota on
needed is determined by the distance of the laser from the pantograph surface. Experiment by rota ng
the threaded end to achieve your desired focal size.
Laser Safety
When using the laser stylus, observe the following basic safety precau ons.
• Never shine directly into the eyes.
• The laser stylus should never be le on and una ended.
• Do not use the laser stylus as a toy.
• Pay close a en on when the laser stylus is being used by or near children or pets.
• Use the laser stylus only for its intended use as described in this manual.
NOTE: If you can’t see the threaded housing, the lens may be threaded too far into the laser body.
You will need to use a large slo ed screwdriver to turn it counter clockwise un l the housing is
visible. You can then rotate it with your fi nger ps to bring the light into focus. Be very careful to not
scratch the lens when using the screwdriver.
CAUTION: Use of controls or adjustments or performance of procedures other than those specifi ed
herein may result in hazardous radia on exposure.

Using Your Machine
Power Switch
The power switch is at the rear of the machine. Turn it on by toggling the switch from the 0 posi on to the
1 posi on.
IMPORTANT: If you will not be using the machine for more than a day, we recommend you turn off
the machine and unplug the power cord from the power source.
IMPORTANT: Refer to the safety instruc ons.
Ligh ng
The Quilt Maker Pro 16 includes an LED light ring that illuminates the needle and s tching area. The light
automa cally comes on when you turn on the machine. Turn off the lights using the Lights bu on on the
Main Screen. For more informa on about turning on and off the LED light ring, see Overview of the Main
Screen in the Using the Touch-Screen Display sec on of this manual.
Machine Needle
Use only the recommended needle system for your Quilt Maker Pro 16 quil ng machine. The machine
was  med to use this specifi c type of needle and it is designed to work with the high quil ng speeds and
mul direc onal s tching the Quilt Maker Pro 16 off ers.
The Quilt Maker Pro 16 uses the 134 needle system. Note that the needle has a round shank rather than a
shank with a fl at side like home sewing machines use.
If you use the recommended needle, you will experience:
• Fewer skipped s tches
• Less needle breakage
• Less thread breakage, especially at high speeds
• Less thread splicing or shredding
• Op mum fabric protec on
IMPORTANT: Change the needle regularly. We recommend you use a new needle for each new
quilt loaded on the machine, and any  me the needle becomes bent, dull, or burred.
CAUTION: A damaged needle may result in poor s tching quality or may even damage the machine
or your quilt.

To change the needle
1. Move the needle bar to the highest posi on by turning the front or rear hand wheel or pressing the
needle up/down control on the handles. Then turn off the power.
2. Loosen the needle bar clamp thumbscrew.
3. Remove the old needle by pulling it down.
Discard the old needle in a safe way.
Sight hole
4. With the scarf (small ground-out sec on/dip on the back side of the needle just above the needle
eye) facing toward the back hand-wheel side of the machine, and the long groove down the front of
the needle facing the bobbin-case side, push the needle all the way up into the needlebar, un l it can
go no further.
5. Carefully  ghten the needle bar clamp screw
un l the needle is securely fastened into the
machine. If necessary use the 2.5mm hex tool
to secure the needle; however take care not
to over  ghten the screw. This may result in
damaged or stripped threads in the needle
clamp. Damage to the needle clamp may also
make it diffi cult to fully insert the needle, which
will change the machine  ming, or cause more
issues. Stripped threads and damage caused by
improper needle installa on or  ghtening are
not covered under warranty.

NOTE: It is recommended to use a new needle
for each new quilt. Also, replace the needle any
 me it becomes bent, dull or burred.
IMPORTANT: Check the needle to confi rm it is
fully inserted. The needle bar has a stop/sight
hole above the needle bar clamp screw. Make
sure the needle is touching the top of the stop/
sight hole. If it is not, the machine  ming will
be off and it may be possible for the needle to
collide with internal parts, causing damage not
covered by the warranty.

CAUTION: Your Janome machine s tches at a much faster speed than your home sewing machine;
therefore, it is essen al that the needle is seated into the needle bar and fully  ghtened (but not
over ghtened). Check o en that the needle has not become loose. If the needle comes loose, it
could break in the machine causing damage, alter the machine’s  ming, or cause
bodily harm.

Machine Quilting Tip: Needle Requirements
For general quil ng, a size 16/100 needle will accommodate most threads and fabrics.
Heavier threads, such as top s tch and some decora ve threads, require a larger needle
such as 18/110 or 20/125. Lo y ba s and heavier fabrics such as denim, canvas, or densely
woven fabric may also require a larger needle.
Hopping Feet
Your machine comes with two hopping feet: a ruler foot (comes installed) and an open-toe foot. Use the
ruler foot for everyday quil ng and ruler work, and use the open-toe foot when you need greater s tch
visibility (such as when you are micro quil ng).
To change the hopping foot
1. Remove the foot that is on the mount by using
the 2.5 mm hex tool to loosen the moun ng
screw far enough that you can slide the foot off
of the mount.
2. Slide the desired foot onto the mount. Note
that the opening on the side of the foot is lined
up with the screw hole. Push the foot up as far
as it will go.
NOTE: You may need to push up the
pressure bar (see Le Side View, Detail A,
item 18) when changing the hopping foot.

3. Fully  ghten the screw with the 2.5 mm
hex tool.
Op onal Accessories: Couching Feet, Echo Feet, and Glide Foot
In addi on to the ruler foot and open-toe foot that come with your Quilt Maker Pro 16, Janome off ers
specialty feet to enhance your quil ng: the Couching Feet Kit, the Echo Feet Kit, and the Glide Foot.
Bobbin and Bobbin Tension
The Quilt Maker Pro 16 quil ng machine uses M-class bobbins that are larger than sewing machine
L-class bobbins. The larger bobbins hold more thread, enabling you to quilt for a longer  me
between bobbin changes.
To wind the bobbin
The Quilt Maker Pro 16 comes with a separate bobbin winder. For full instruc ons about using the bobbin
winder, see the instruc on manual that was packaged with the bobbin winder.
To insert the bobbin into the bobbin case
CAUTION: To prevent personal injury, always turn off the power switch while inser ng or
removing the bobbin case or whenever your hands are near the needle area, such as when
you change the needle.
