Important user
information
All users must read the entire Instructions for Use before operating
LUCAS Chest Compression System.
The Instructions for Use should always be easily accessible to the
users of LUCAS.
Always follow local and/or international guidelines for CPR when
using LUCAS.
The use of other medical equipment or drugs in conjunction with
external chestcompressionsmayreducetheeffectof compressions.
Always consult the instructions for use for other equipment or
drugsto checkthattheyareappropriatetouseinconjunctionwith
the treatment and compressions being performed with LUCAS.
When LUCAS is used on a non intubated patient the device can
safely be stopped to allow intermittent manual ventilation. Switch
off the device by turning the ON/OFF knob to the Lock
position,
ventilate and turn the ON/OFF knob backto the Active
position
again. See Section 1.5 on page 13 for information about the ON/OFF
knob positions.
R EQUIRED SKILLS
Jolife AB strongly recommends that LUCAS Chest Compression
System is only used by persons with basic medical skills such as:
Firstresponders,ambulancepersonnel,nurses,physiciansormedical
staffs, who have:
• undertaken a CPR courseaccordingtothe EuropeanResuscitation
Council Guidelines for resuscitation, or equivalent, AND
• received training in how to use LUCAS.
LUCAS can only be bought by or on the order of a licenced medical
practitioner.

Belangrijke
gebruikersinformatie
Alle gebruikers moeten deze gebruiksaanwijzing volledig doorlezen
alvorens LUCAS hartmassagesysteem te gebruiken.
Deze gebruiksaanwijzing dient steeds gemakkelijk toegankelijk te
zijn voor gebruikers van LUCAS.
Neem altijd de plaatselijke en/of internationale richtlijnen voor
CPR in acht wanneer u LUCAS gebruikt.
Het gebruik van andere medische apparatuur of geneesmiddelen
in combinatie met externe hartmassage kan het effect van de
hartmassageverminderen.Raadpleegaltijddegebruiksaanwijzing
van andere apparatuur of geneesmiddelen om te controleren of
deze geschikt zijn voor gebruik in combinatie met de behandeling
en hartmassage met LUCAS.
Als LUCAS wordt gebruikt bij een niet-geïntubeerde patiënt, kan
hettoestel veilig worden gestopt om handmatige luchttoevoer met
tussenpozen mogelijk te maken. Schakel het toestel uit door de
AAN/UIT-knopindestand Slot tezetten.Voerluchttoe enzet
de AAN/UIT-knop terug in de stand Actief . Zie hoofdstuk 1.5
oppagina 13voor informatie over destandenvan de AAN/UIT-knop.
B ENODIGDE VAARDIGHEDEN
Jolife AB adviseert met klem dat LUCAS hartmassagesysteem
uitsluitend wordt gebruikt door personen met medische
basisvaardigheden, zoals:
eerstehulpverleners, ambulancepersoneel, verpleegkundigen,
artsen en overige beoefenaars van een medisch beroep, die:
• een CPR-cursus hebben gevolgd volgens de richtlijnen voor
reanimatie van de Europese Reanimatie Raad of gelijkwaardig,
en
• een opleiding hebben gevolgd voor het gebruik van LUCAS.
LUCAS kan alleen worden gekocht door of namens een bevoegd
beoefenaar van een medisch beroep.

matière de réanimation cardio-pulmonaire (RCP) lors del’utilisation
du LUCAS.

C OMPÉTENCES REQUISES
Conformément aux recommandations de Jolife AB, le Système de
compression thoracique LUCAS doit être utilisé exclusivement par
des personnes ayant les compétences médicales suivantes :
Premiers secours, personnel ambulancier, infirmières, médecins ou
personnel médical
• formé à la réanimation cardio-pulmonaire (RCP) selon les
directives applicables du Conseil de réanimation européen
(ou formation équivalente) ET
• formé à l’utilisation du LUCAS.
Le LUCAS ne peut être acheté que par un patricien médical diplômé

1 Introduction
1.1 INTENDED USE
LUCAS Chest Compression System is to be used for
performing external cardiac compressions on adult
patients who have acute circulatory arrest defined
as absence of spontaneous breathing and pulse, and
loss of consciousness.
LUCAS must only be used in cases where manual
chest compression would be used. LUCAS is only
intended for temporary use.
1.2 CONTRAINDICATIONS
Do NOT use LUCAS Chest Compression System in
the following cases:
•Too small adult patient: The distance between
the pressure pad and the patient’s sternum
exceeds 15 mm when LUCAS has been set to the
smallest patient size.
•Too large patient: The support legs of LUCAS
cannot be locked to the back plate without
compressing the patient.
•Patient is a child.
•Patient with traumatic injury (wounds resulting
from sudden physical injury or violence).
•Pregnant patients. The woman has to lie 10–15°
to one side to prevent vena cava syndrome
(impaired venous return to the heart as the
uterus compresses the inferior vena cava).
•If there is no indication that chest compression
is likely to help the patient.
1.3 LUCAS CHEST COMPRESSION SYSTEM
LUCAS is a portable device for external cardiac
compressions. It is stored and easily carried in a
backpack, giving the user free hands until the
device is needed.
The components of LUCAS are shown in the
illustration in Section 1.4.

1Inleiding
1.1 BEOOGD GEBRUIK
LUCAS hartmassagesysteem is bestemd voor
gebruik bij het uitvoeren van externe hartmassage
bij volwassen patiënten met acute circulatiestilstand,
gedefinieerd als afwezigheid van spontane
ademhaling en polsslag, en verlies van bewustzijn.
LUCAS mag alleen worden gebruikt in gevallen
waar handmatige hartmassage zou worden
toegepast. LUCAS is uitsluitend bestemd voor
tijdelijk gebruik.
1.2 CONTRA-INDICATIES
Gebruik LUCAS hartmassagesysteem in de
volgende gevallen NIET:
•Te kleine volwassen patiënt: De afstand tussen
het drukkussen en het sternum van de patiënt is
groter dan 15 mm wanneer LUCAS is ingesteld
op de kleinste patiëntgrootte.
•Te grote patiënt: De ondersteuningsarmen van
LUCAS kunnen niet aan de back board worden
vastgemaakt zonder de patiënt samen te drukken.
•De patiënt is een kind.
•Patiënt met traumatisch letsel (verwondingen
als gevolg van een ongeval of geweld).
•Zwangere patiënten. De vrouw moet onder een
hoek van 10–15° op haar zij liggen om vena-cava-
syndroom (belemmering van de veneuze
bloedstroom naar het hart doordat de uterus op
de vena cava inferior drukt) te voorkomen.
•Als er geen indicatie is dat de patiënt baat zal
vinden bij hartmassage.
1.3 LUCAS HARTMASSAGESYSTEEM
LUCAS is een draagbaar toestel voor externe
hartmassage. Het wordt bewaard in een rugzak,
zodat het gemakkelijk draagbaar is en de gebruiker
zijn handen vrij heeft tot hij het toestel nodig heeft.
De componenten van LUCAS zijn afgebeeld op de
afbeelding in hoofdstuk 1.4.
1 Introduction
1.1 INDICATION D’UTILISATION
Le Système de compression thoracique LUCAS est
conçu pour exercer des compressions cardiaques
externes sur des patients adultes en arrêt
circulatoire complet, c’est-à-dire se caractérisant
par l’absence de pouls, de respiration spontanée et
une perte de connaissance.
LUCAS ne doit être utilisé qu’à la place d’un massage
cardiaque manuel. LUCAS ne doit être utilisé que
temporairement.
1.2 CONTRE-INDICATIONS
Ne PAS utiliser le Système de compression
thoracique LUCAS dans les cas suivants :
•Patient adulte trop mince : La distance entre le
tampon de compression et le sternum est
supérieure à 15 mm, quand le LUCAS est réglé
sur la plus petite taille de patient.
•Patient adulte ayant une trop grande surcharge
pondérale : les pieds de support du LUCAS ne
peuvent être fixés à la planche inférieure sans
comprimer le patient.
•Enfant.
•Patient avec blessure traumatique (issue d’une
blessure physique soudaine ou de violence).
•Patientes en cours de grossesse : les femmes
enceintes doivent être allongées sur le côté selon
un angle compris entre 10 et 15° pour éviter le
syndrome de la veine cave (mauvais retour veineux
au cœur, dû à la compression exercée par l’utérus
sur la veine cave inférieure).
•Absence d’indication à la pratique d’un massage
cardiaque.
1.3 SYSTÈME DE COMPRESSION THORACIQUE
LUCAS
Le LUCAS est un appareil portable conçu pour
exercer des compressions cardiaques externes.
Il peut facilement être stocké et porté grâce à un
sac à dos, permettant ainsi à l’utilisateur d’avoir les
mains libres jusqu’au moment d’utilisation.

1.6 DESCRIPTION
1.6.1 M AIN PARTS
LUCAS consists of an upper part and a back plate.
The back plate is placed underneath the patient to
form a support for the external chest compressions.
The upper part contains a pneumatically driven
piston rod, which acts on the patient’s chest via a
pressure pad. The pressure pad is surrounded by a
suction cup.
The support legs of the upper part are fastened to
the back plate prior to starting compressions.
1.6.2 C ONNECTION TO AIR SUPPLY
LUCAS can be powered by compressed air from a
wall outlet or a cylinder. See Section 6 for
specification of air sources.
The air hose is permanently mounted on LUCAS,
and has a unique male connector at the open end.
The male connector only fits into a female connector
on the separate connector hose, which must be used
to connect LUCAS to the air supply. The connector
hose is available with a range of connectors suiting
different standards for air connections.
LUCAS requires no electrical supply and has no
conducting parts on the outside, except the hose
attachment, the claw lock bar, and the upper
attachment of the bellows.

1.6 BESCHRIJVING
1.6.1 B ELANGRIJKSTE ONDERDELEN
LUCAS bestaat uit een bovendeel en een back board.
De back board wordt onder de patiënt geplaatst zodat
deze ondersteuning biedt bij externe hartmassage.
Het bovendeel bestaat uit een pneumatisch
aangedreven zuigerstang die druk uitoefent op de
borst van de patiënt via een drukkussen. Het
drukkussen wordt omsloten door een suction cup.
De ondersteuningsarmen van het bovendeel worden
vóór het begin van de massage aan de back board
bevestigd.
1.6.2 A ANSLUITING OP DE LUCHTTOEVOER
LUCAS kan van lucht worden voorzien door
perslucht uit een wandaansluiting of een fles. Zie
hoofdstuk 6 voor specificatie van luchtbronnen.
De luchtslang is permanent op LUCAS gemonteerd
en is voorzien van een uniek mannelijk aansluitstuk
aan het open uiteinde. Het mannelijke aansluitstuk
past uitsluitend op een vrouwelijk aansluitstuk op
de afzonderlijke koppelslang, die moet worden
gebruikt om LUCAS aan te sluiten op de
luchttoevoer. De koppelslang is verkrijgbaar met
verschillende aansluitstukken voor verschillende
typen luchtaansluitingen.
LUCAS heeft geen stroombron nodig en heeft geen
geleidende delenaan de buitenkant, met uitzondering
van het slangaansluitstuk en de klauwvergren-
delingsstang.
1.6 DESCRIPTION

inférieure forme un support rigide permettant

La partie supérieure renferme un piston

tampon de compression. Ce tampon est entouré
d’une ventouse.
Les pieds de support de la partie supérieure doivent
être fixés à la planche inférieure avant de commencer
les compressions.
1.6.2 B RANCHEMENT À L ’ ALIMENTATION EN AIR
Le LUCAS peut être alimenté en air comprimé par
une prise murale ou une bouteille. Voir
paragraphe 6 pour les spécifications des sources
d’alimentation en air.
Le tuyau, fixé en permanence sur le LUCAS, se
termine à son extrémité par un connecteur mâle.
Ce connecteur mâle n’est compatible qu’avec le
connecteur femelle du flexible du LUCAS adapté à
la source d’alimentation en air. Il existe plusieurs
types de connecteurs correspondants aux différents
standards d’alimentation en air.
Le LUCAS ne nécessite aucune alimentation
électrique et ne comporte aucune pièce conductrice
à sa surface, excepté l’attache du tuyau, le clip de
fixation et la fixation supérieure du soufflet.

1.8 DELIVERED ITEMS
LUCAS Chest Compression System is delivered in
two or more boxes. Before using LUCAS, make sure
that the following items are delivered:
1. LUCAS in carrying bag together with
Instructions for Use in relevant language
versions.
2. Connectors as ordered.
3. Optional LUCAS Stabilisation Strap (packed in
carrying bag).
1.9 ATTACHING ACONNECTOR
A connector for the intended air connection must
be attached to the air hose, before LUCAS Chest
Compression System can be used:
1. When packing LUCAS, make sure that you
have got the appropriate connectors.
2. Attach the female end of the connector to the
air hose by pressing firmly until the parts have
locked in place.
3. To release the connector, retract the green/
yellow ring on the connector.
1.10 THE LUCAS TEAM
It is strongly recommended that qualified personnel
work in teams of two. This enables one person to
perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
while the other person unpacks LUCAS Chest
Compression System.
The Instructions for Use will refer to “The LUCAS
team” (Figure q), consisting of two people who
have the required skills stated on page 8.

1.9 FIXATION DU CONNECTEUR
Avant d’utiliser le Système de compression
thoracique LUCAS, reliez le connecteur à air
approprié au tuyau.
1. Avant de déballer le LUCAS, vérifiez que vous
avez les connecteurs appropriés.
2. Reliez l’extrémité femelle du connecteur au
tuyau en appuyant suffisamment pour que les
deux soient bien liés.
3. Pour enlever le connecteur, rétractez l’anneau
vert/jaune du connecteur.
1.10 L’ÉQUIPE LUCAS
Il est fortement recommandé que le personnel
qualifié travaille par binôme. Cela permet à un des
membres du binôme de commencer la réanimation
cardio-pulmonaire (RCP), tandis que l’autre déballe
le Système de compression thoracique LUCAS.
Dans cette notice, « l’équipe LUCAS » (Figure q)
désigne un binôme disposant des compétences
requises (voir page 9).
1.8 GELEVERDE ITEMS

1.9 AANSLUITSTUKKEN AANSLUITEN
Voor LUCAS hartmassagesysteem kan worden
gebruikt, moet er een aansluitstuk voor de beoogde
luchtaansluiting op de luchtslang worden
aangesloten.
1. Controleer bij het inpakken van LUCAS of u de
juiste aansluitstukken hebt.
2. Sluit het vrouwelijke uiteinde van het
aansluitstuk aan op de luchtslang door stevig
te drukken tot de verschillende delen stevig
vastzitten.
3. Om het aansluitstuk los te maken, trekt u aan
de groengele ring op het aansluitstuk.
1.10 HET LUCAS TEAM
Er wordt met klem geadviseerd dat gekwalificeerde
medewerkers in teams van twee personen werken.
Op deze manier kan één persoon reanimatie (CPR)
uitvoeren, terwijl de andere persoon LUCAS
hartmassagesysteem uitpakt.
De Gebruiksaanwijzing verwijst naar “het LUCAS-
team”(Afbeelding q), bestaande uit twee
personen met de benodigde vaardigheden vermeld
op bladzijde 9.

1.11 BACKGROUND
The single most common cause of death in western
society is cardiovascular disease either on its own
or as a contributory factor.
There is only a short space of time after the heart
stops during which it is possible to reverse the
situation and restore spontaneous circulation.
If the heart is not started quickly, the two most
important organs, the heart and brain, will be
damaged by the lack of oxygen.
Effective chest compressions can restore
circulation to a level, which may be sufficient to
prevent heart and brain damage during a short
period of time.
For optimal results the compressions should be
performed in such a way that the rib cage is held
down for approximately half of the time, and
subsequently released for the remaining half of
the time

It is very difficult to perform manual chest
compressions effectively, even for experienced CPR
practitioners, and especially in a vehicle, moving
ambulance, during transport or when there is no
firm surface under the patient
