When using electrical appliances, basic safety precautions shall
always be followed, to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and/or
injury to persons, including the following:
ZRead all instructions.
ZDo not touch hot surfaces. Use handles or knobs.
ZTo protect against fire, electric shock and injury to persons, do
not immerse power cord, plugs, or body of machine in water
or other liquid.
ZClose supervision is necessary when any appliance is used by
or near children.
ZUnplug from outlet when not in use and before cleaning.
Allow to cool before putting on or taking off parts, and before
cleaning the appliance.
ZDo not operate any appliance with a damaged cord or plug or
after the appliance malfunctions, or has been damaged in any
manner. Return appliance to the nearest authorized service
facility for examination, repair or adjustment.
ZThe use of an accessory attachment not recommended by the
appliance manufacturer may result in fire, electric shock, or

IMPORTANT SAFEGUARDS
The appliance is designed and intended for household use only. It
shall only be used for coffee preparation and to heat milk and water,
according to these instructions. Use for any other purpose will be
deemed improper. JURA Elektroapparate AG cannot accept any
responsibility for the consequences of improper use.
People, including children, who
Zdo not have the physical, sensory or mental capabilities to use
the appliance safely or
Zare inexperienced or lack knowledge in how to use the appli-
ance safely
must be supervised by a responsible person when using it, or must
be instructed in how to use it correctly.
ZThe power cord is provided to reduce the risk resulting from
becoming entangled in or tripping over a long cord.
ZThe cord shall be arranged so that it will not drape over the
counter top or table top where it can be pulled on by children
or tripped over.
ZThis appliance has a 3-pin grounded plug. As a safety feature,
this plug will fit in a polarized outlet only one way.
ZIf the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it
still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician.
ZDo not modify the plug in any way or attempt to defeat this
safety feature.
Do NOT use extension cords.
If the user chooses to use an extension cord,
Zthe marked electrical rating of the extension cord shall be at
least as great as the electrical rating of the appliance, and
Zif the appliance is of the grounded type, the extension cord
shall be a grounding type 3-wire cord, and
Zthe longer cord shall be arranged so that it will not drape over

In the event of signs of damage, for example if there is a smell of
burning, unplug the machine immediately from outlet and contact
JURA customer service.
This appliance is for household use. Any servicing other than clea-
ning and user maintenance shall be performed by an authorized
service representative:
ZDo not immerse base in water or try to disassemble.
ZDo not put the appliance or any individual parts in the dish-
washer.
ZCheck voltage to be sure that the voltage indicated on the
name plate complies with your voltage.
ZNever use warm or hot water to fill the water container. Use
cold water only.
ZKeep your hands and the cord away from hot parts of the
appliance during operation.
There is a risk of scalds or burns on the spouts and the cappuccino
frother / nozzle.
ZKeep children away.
ZDo not touch any hot parts. Use the handles or knobs provi-
ded.
ZEnsure that the cappuccino frother / nozzle is correctly fitted
and clean. If incorrectly fitted or if they become blocked, the
cappuccino frother or its parts might come off.
ZNever clean with scouring powders or hard implements.
ZEnsure that the ventilation slots are not covered.
ZNever pull out the drip tray during the brewing process. Only
pull the drip tray when the display instructs you or when the
appliance is ready for use.

ZNever fill instant coffee, chocolate mix etc. into the bean con-
tainer or ground coffee funnel (filler funnel for ground coffee).
It will damage the functioning of the brewing chamber.
ZNever fill sugar coated coffee beans into the bean container.
In case of doubt, call your dealer.
ZNever fill anything other than coffee beans into the bean con-
tainer (no chocolate, no rice, no nuts, no spices, nothing other
than roasted coffee beans).
ZNever fill frozen beans into the bean container. If you store
beans in the freezer, let them thaw 3 to 4 hours before filling
them into the bean container.
ZNever fill anything but fresh, cold and clean water into the
water tank, except when decalcifying.
ZNever use mineral or carbonated water. You can use tap water,
bottled water, spring water and reverse osmosis water.
ZNever do anything with the machine which is not described in
these instructions. In case of doubt, call your dealer.

1 Preparing and using for the first time
Visit us on the internet.
@You can download short operating instructions for your
machine from the JURA website www.jura.com. You will also
find interesting and up-to-date information on your IMPRESSA
and on every aspect of coffee.
@You can familiarize yourself with your IMPRESSA in a fun
way on the PC. The Knowledge Builder awaits you at
www.jura.com. The interactive assistant, LEO, will assist you
and explain the benefits of and how to use your IMPRESSA.
When setting up your IMPRESSA, please note the following:
UPlace the IMPRESSA on a horizontal surface that is not sensi-
tive to water.
UChoose a spot for your IMPRESSA which protects the machine
against overheating. Ensure that the ventilation slots are not
covered.
To enjoy the perfect cup of coffee we recommend changing the
water every day.
Milk, mineral water or other liquids can damage the water tank or
the machine.
TOnly fill the water tank with fresh, cold water.
TOpen the water tank cover.
TRemove the water tank and rinse it with cold water.
TFill the water tank with fresh, cold water and reinsert the
tank.
TClose the water tank cover.

The bean container has an aroma preservation cover. This will ensure
that your coffee beans retain their aroma for longer.
Coffee beans which have been treated with additives (e.g. sugar),
ground coffee or freeze-dried coffee will damage the grinder.
TOnly use roasted, untreated coffee beans to fill the bean
container.
TOpen the bean container cover and remove the aroma pres-
ervation cover.
TRemove any dirt or foreign objects from inside the bean
container.
TFill the bean container with coffee beans, then close the
aroma preservation cover and the bean container cover.
If the machine is operated with a defective power cord, there is a
danger of potentially fatal electric shock.
TNever use a machine which is damaged.
TNever use a machine which has a defective power cord.
EThe water volume is given as standard in OZ. You can change
this setting to ML in programming mode (see Chapter 4 ‘Per-
manent settings in programming mode – Unit for amount of
water’).
Precondition: The water tank and bean container are full.
TInsert the power plug into a power socket.
3TSwitch on the IMPRESSA using the power switch on the left-
hand side of the machine.
QTPress the On/Off button to switch the IMPRESSA on.
The Rotary Switch lights up. LANGUAGE ENGLISH
appears on the display.
EYou can select another language by turning the Rotary Switch.
kTPress the Rotary Switch to confirm the language.
CONFIRMED appears briefly on the display to confirm the
setting.
PRESS RINSE, the Maintenance button clights up.

cTPress the Maintenance button.
SYSTEM FILLS, the system fills up with water. The oper-
ation stops automatically and WELCOME TO JURA
appears on the display.
UNIT IS HEATING
PRESS RINSE, the Maintenance button clights up.
TPlace a receptacle under the coffee spout.
cTPress the Maintenance button.
RINSING, the machine rinses. The operation stops auto-
matically.
COFFEE READY appears on the display. Your IMPRESSA
is ready for use.
Your IMPRESSA no longer has to be descaled if you are using the
CLEARYL Blue filter cartridge.
EPerform the ‘inserting the filter’ operation without any inter-
ruptions. This will ensure that your IMPRESSA always produces
its best.
Precondition: COFFEE READY is displayed.
kTPress and hold the Rotary Switch until MAINTENANCE
appears on the display.
gTTurn the Rotary Switch until FILTER is displayed.
kTPress the Rotary Switch to enter the program item.
FILTER NO
gTTurn the Rotary Switch until FILTER YES is displayed.
kTPress the Rotary Switch to confirm the setting.
CONFIRMED appears briefly on the display.
INSERT FILTER / PRESS BUTTON, the Mainte-
nance button clights up.
TRemove the filter cartridge extension from the Welcome
Pack.
TFit the filter extension on top of a CLEARYL Blue filter car-
tridge.
TRemove and empty the water tank.

TOpen the filter holder and insert the filter cartridge into the
water tank, exerting slight pressure.
TClose the filter holder. It will click into place audibly.
EAfter three months, the filter will cease to work. You can check
the elapsed time by referring to the date plate on the filter
holder in the water tank.
TFill the water tank with fresh, cold water and reinsert the
tank.
TPlace a receptacle (at least 17 oz or 500 ml) under the cap-
puccino frother.
cTPress the Maintenance button.
FILTER RINS.. Water flows out of the cappuccino
frother.
EYou can interrupt rinsing of the filter at any time by pressing
any button. Press the Maintenance button cto continue rins-
ing of the filter.
EThe water may be slightly discolored. This is not harmful to
health and does not affect the taste.
Rinsing of the filter stops automatically after approxi-
mately 17 oz (500 ml). COFFEE READY appears on the
display. The filter is activated.
EIf you are using the CLEARYL Blue filter cartridge and have
activated it in programming mode, you will not be able to
adjust the water hardness.
The harder the water is, the more frequently the IMPRESSA needs to
be descaled. It is therefore important to adjust the water hardness.
The water hardness can be adjusted on a continuous scale between
1 °dH and 30 °dH. It can also be deactivated, which means that the
IMPRESSA will not let you know when it has to be descaled.

You can find out what the water hardness is by using the Aquadur®
test strip supplied as standard.
THold the test strip briefly (for one second) under flowing
water. Shake off the water.
TWait for about one minute.
TRead the degree of water hardness from the discoloration of
the Aquadur® test strip and the description on the packag-
ing.
You can now adjust the water hardness.
Example: Proceed as follows to change the water hardness from
16°dH to 25°dH.
Precondition: COFFEE READY is displayed.
kTPress and hold the Rotary Switch until MAINTENANCE
appears on the display.
gTTurn the Rotary Switch until HARDNESS is displayed.
kTPress the Rotary Switch to enter the program item.

played.
kTPress the Rotary Switch to confirm the setting.

You can adjust the grinder on a continuous scale to suit the degree
of roast of your coffee.
If you adjust the consistency of grind when the grinder is not oper-
ating, the grinder adjustment switch could be damaged.
TOnly adjust the consistency of grind when the grinder is run-
ning.
The consistency of grind setting is correct if the coffee flows regu-
larly from the coffee spout. In addition a fine, thick crema forms.
Example: Proceed as follows to change the consistency of grind
during the preparation of an espresso.
TOpen the cover of the bean container.
TPlace a cup under the coffee spout.
iTPress the Espresso button.
The grinder starts up. 1 ESPRESSO and the coffee
strength are displayed.
TTurn the grinder adjustment switch to the desired position
while the grinder is running.
The espresso is prepared and the consistency of grind is
adjusted.
TClose the cover of the bean container.

Hot coffee, hot steam and hot water can cause scalding. Scalding is
a serious burn.
TUse extreme care when handling hot liquid or steam.
TAllow liquid to cool down before drinking.
TIn the event of scalding, rinse affected area with cold water
and seek medical attention.
TKeep children AWAY.
For a summary of the different temperatures, please refer to Chap-
ter 4 ‘Permanent settings in programming mode – Products’.
EYou can stop preparation of a specialty coffee, milk specialty
or hot water at any time. Just press any button.
EBefore and during the grinding operation you can select the
coffee strength of individual products: extra-mild (ö),
mild (öö), normal (ööö), strong (öööö) or extra-
strong (ööööö).
EDuring preparation, you can change the preset amount of
water by turning the Rotary Switch.
EThe water volume is given as standard in OZ. You can change
this setting to ML in programming mode (see Chapter 4 ‘Per-
manent settings in programming mode – Unit for amount of
water’).
EYou can follow the current status of preparation on the
progress bar.
All specialty coffees (ristretto u, espresso iand coffee o) are pre-
pared following this model.
Example: Proceed as follows to prepare one coffee.
TPlace a cup under the coffee spout.
oTPress the Coffee button.
Preparation starts. 1COFFEE and the coffee strength is
displayed. The preset amount of water for coffee flows into
the cup.
Preparation stops automatically and ENJOY appears briefly

To prepare two cups of coffee: Place two cups under the coffee
spout. Press the Coffee button twice o(within two seconds) to
start coffee preparation.
Example: Proceed as follows to prepare one special coffee.
TPlace a cup under the cappuccino frother.
eTPress the Special Coffee button.
Preparation starts. SPECIAL and the coffee strength is
displayed. The preset amount of water for coffee flows into
the cup. Preparation stops automatically and ENJOY
appears briefly on the display. Then COFFEE READY is
displayed.
Your IMPRESSA can prepare a latte macchiato or cappuccino at the
touch of a button. There is no need to move the glass or cup.
Example: Proceed as follows to prepare one latte macchiato.
TAttach the milk pipe to the cappuccino frother. Use the long
pipe for a milk carton/bottle and the short pipe for the milk
container.
TInsert the other end of the milk pipe into a milk carton/
bottle or connect it to a milk container.
TPlace a glass under the cappuccino frother.
TTurn the setting wheel of the cappuccino frother to the milk
foam position 5.
qTPress the Latte Macchiato button.
EIf an energy-saving mode is set, the machine heats up first.
Press the Latte Macchiato button once more as soon as
COFFEE READY is displayed again.

EThere is a short interval while the hot milk separates from the
milk foam. This allows the typical layers of a latte macchiato
to form. You can choose the length of this interval in program-
ming mode (see Chapter 4 ‘Permanent settings in program-
ming mode – Products’).

The preset amount of water flows into the glass. Preparation
stops automatically and ENJOY appears briefly on the dis-
play. Then COFFEE READY is displayed.
To make sure the cappuccino frother always works properly, rinse
and clean it regularly (see Chapter 5 ‘Maintenance – Rinsing the
cappuccino frother’).
Example: Proceed as follows to prepare milk foam.
TAttach the milk pipe to the cappuccino frother. Use the long
pipe for a milk carton/bottle and the short pipe for the milk
container.
TInsert the other end of the milk pipe into a milk carton/bot-
tle or connect it to the milk container.
TPlace a cup under the cappuccino frother.
TTurn the setting wheel of the cappuccino frother to the milk
foam position 5.
EIf you want to heat the milk turn the setting wheel of the cap-
puccino frother to the milk position z.
zTPress the Milk button.
1MILK, the milk foam is prepared. Preparation stops auto-
matically and COFFEE READY appears on the display.
To make sure the cappuccino frother always works properly, rinse
and clean it regularly (see Chapter 5 ‘Maintenance – Rinsing the cap-
puccino frother’).
You can choose a second coffee variety, for example decaffeinated
coffee, with the filler funnel for ground coffee.

ENever add more than two level measuring spoons of ground
coffee.
EUse ground coffee which is not ground too finely. Very fine
coffee can block up the system so that the coffee only comes
out in drips.
EIf you did not fill the machine with a sufficient amount of
ground coffee, PRE-GROUND / NOT ENOUGH is displayed
and the IMPRESSA stops the operation.
EThe desired specialty coffee must be prepared within approx-
imately one minute after filling with the ground coffee.
Otherwise the IMPRESSA stops the operation and is once
more ready for use.
All specialty coffees with ground coffee are prepared following this
model.
Example: Proceed as follows to prepare an espresso using ground
coffee.
TPlace an espresso cup under the coffee spout.
TOpen the cover of the bean container.
TOpen the cover of the filler funnel for ground coffee.
PRE-GROUND / FILL POWDER
TPlace one level measuring spoon of ground coffee into the
filler funnel.
TClose the cover of the filler funnel for ground coffee.
PRE-GROUND / SELECT PRODUCT
iTPress the Espresso button.
Preparation will now begin. The preset amount of water for
espresso flows into the cup. Preparation stops automatically
and ENJOY appears briefly on the display. Then COFFEE
READY is displayed.
It is easy to permanently set the amount of water for all specialty
coffees, milk specialties and hot water to the cup size. Adjust the
amount once as shown in the following example. Every time you
prepare a drink in the future, this amount of water will be dispensed.

cialty coffees, milk specialties and hot water follows this model.

Example: Proceed as follows to permanently set the amount of
water for one coffee.
Precondition: COFFEE READY is displayed.
TPlace a cup under the coffee spout.
oTPress and hold the Coffee button.
1COFFEE and the coffee strength is displayed.
oTHold the Coffee button down until ENOUGH? / PRESS
BUTTON appears.
oTRelease the Coffee button.
Preparation starts and the coffee flows into the cup.
TPress any button as soon as there is sufficient coffee in the
cup.
Preparation stops. CONFIRMED and ENJOY appear
briefly on the display. The set amount of water for one cof-
fee will be permanently stored. COFFEE READY appears
on the display.
EYou can alter this setting at any time by repeating the above
procedure.
EYou can also permanently set the amounts for all specialty cof-
fees, milk specialties and hot water in programming mode in
the PRODUCTS program item.
The following temperatures can be selected for preparing hot water:
low, normal, high.
There is a danger of scalding from hot water splashes.
TAvoid direct contact with the skin.
TPlace a cup under the hot-water spout.
mTPress the Hot Water button.
HOT WATER and the temperature is displayed.
EBy touching the Hot Water button several times (within
approximately 2 seconds) you can set the temperature to
your individual preference. This setting is not saved.
Hot water flows into the cup. Preparation stops automati-
cally and COFFEE READY appears on the display.
