1Initial Commissioning
1.1 System requirement
The corresponding free APP from the respective APP store can be installed on a mobile terminal unit (smartphone or tablet
PC) with an Android operating system, version 9.0 or newer or IOS operating system version 11.0 or newer. You will find a
link to the corresponding APP store via QR code on the cover sheet. The APP name is: KACO NX Setup
1.2 System overview
Below, you will find illustrations of various system configurations. Take detailed note of the required peripheral equipment
in order to implement an optimum solution for your specific application.
Step 1: Communication device
Set up via mobile terminal

1.3 Connectivity
Initial start-up of the inverter is carried out via a HOT spot WLAN connection between the communication device (WLAN-
Stick) connected to the inverter and a mobile device with installed “KACO NX Setup” APP.
There are two ways to connect with the hot spot created by the communication device:
•Establish a simplified connection with the communication device by opening the APP and reading in the QR code on
the communication device with Installation Mode.
•Connect by scanning the QR code on the communication device with the APP or open the WLAN setting of your
mobile terminal unit, select a WLAN with the designation B0……. and enter the password.
Note: The SSID name and password of the communication device are printed on the communication device.
1.4 Authorisation
NOTE
In order to use the full range of functions of the KACO NX app, you should accept all requested
authorisations. The current description represents the SW version 1.06. APP-Note will be updated as soon
as newer software versions are available in order to inform you about the latest functions.
The app does not use these authorisations to record the user’s telephone data.
NOTE
Our KACO homepage offers a wide range of further product information to assist you during start-up. You
can find this information in the download area under: https://kaco-newenergy.com/de/downloads/.
Follow the QR code link on the cover sheet to view the installation and start-up video.
NOTE
No passcode is required for initial start-up. A passcode must be entered again if it becomes necessary to
change the parameters of the device after initial start-up.
The specific passcode for the inverter can be requested from KACO Service. https://kaco-

NOTE
Frequency band
Before configuring the network, you should make sure that the WLAN router supports
the 2.4G frequency band. The communication device can only be operated in the 2.4G-frequency band.
Installation location
For a stable connection, the communication device and inverter should not be more than 10 m from the
router.
Availability of SSID and router password
The communication device only supports 32 characters for SSID and password.
NOTE
We recommend connecting the communication device to the customer's WLAN. If the signal quality of the
network is not sufficient or not available, you can only continue with a hot-spot connection.
To use the monitoring and control functions (Monitoring Portal "blueplanet web"), there must be a
connection to the Internet via the customer WLAN.


WLAN of your mobile device is activated,
and the existing customer WLAN network
router is switched on.
"KACO NX Setup" APP is installed and
opened from Android/ iOS Store on your
mobile device.

Communication device is plugged into the
COM2 port of the device. (See manual of
the inverter - chapter Connecting
interfaces)
Note: Each unit of the unit series must be
configured with the enclosed communication
device. There is a fixed assignment to the
device afterwards.
Access data for the customer WLAN
network must be provided by the
customer.
1. Select <Commissioning>
2. Grant permission to use images, videos
and camera.
3. Scan the QR code on communication
device.
»The connection to the hot-spot WLAN is
established (B0...).

Note: The connection exists exclusively via
the hotspot until step 6. This is how long
your mobile end device must be kept near
the communication device
4. Confirm the communication device with
<Join>.
Note: After a short time, you will get 2.
options in <Network Configuration>.
Option 1- Integrate the communication
device into the local customer WLAN
network.
Option 2 - Continue to use isolated
hotspot. (Follow immediately chapter 1.6
on Page 5)
5. Your customer must now select their
own network and enter their password*
for this network and click on the
<Confirm> button.
Note:If the connection fails, the
communication device is not within range
of the client router. You can improve the
signal quality between the communication
device and the router by connecting a
repeater. However, this repeater must also
be connected to the same network

Note: If the connection is successful, your
communication device is connected to the
customer WLAN network. Now your mobile
terminal must also be connected to the
customer WLAN network.
6. Via <Settings> on the mobile terminal,
you must now establish a connection with
the customer WLAN network.
Note: The password is pre-filled if the
connection already exists.
7. Note the checklist and status. Process
takes up to 5 min.

displayed in a new window.

Note: <Network Configuration> displays
information on the unit serial number,
software version and system time.
If the system time differs, you can set it
under <Time Zone>.
8. <Confirm> the successful integration of
the communication device into the
customer WLAN network.
Note:Your communication device is
equipped with a blue LED that indicates
the connection status to the free
"blueplanet Web" portal. If you use this
portal later on, the blue LED will light up
permanently when in use.
Note: The software version is the firmware
version of the unit. You can find this in the
chapter 5.2 on Page 27 for update to keep
the device at the current functional status.

1.6 Connecting the Inverter to a Mobile Device via Hotspot
Note: We recommend connecting the
communication device to the customer's
WLAN network.
However, if the signal quality of the network
is not sufficient or not available, you can
continue with the hotspot connection to the
unit.
"KACO NX Setup" APP is installed and
opened from Android/iOS Store on your
mobile device.
Password is not required. However, you
must stand directly next to the unit to get
a connection.
1. Execute action steps 1- 4 are from
chapter 1.5 on Page 3.
2. Execute the hotspot connection via
<Confirm>.
3. Note the checklist and status. Process
takes up to 5 min.
»Successful connection is displayed in a
new window. The status <Connect> is
displayed here. In the event of an error,
repeat the process.

4. After a search, confirm the desired
communication device.
5. The blue signal status LED should now
flash.

1.7 Menu of the communication device
Note:In both cases, you now have access to
the communication device.
Here you can make settings that do not
directly affect the function of the inverter.
For initial commissioning, we recommend
calling up the following parameter:
-Set up time zone
-Set the country and grid type
identically for each connected
inverter. (Observe local grid
requirements!)
-View the current values of the
customer's PV system in order to
detect any faults.
-View the Modbus address.
Note: After exiting the initial start-up, the
serial number-based password is required to
set further parameters. See chapter 4 on page
15.

1.8 Set up time zone
Note: The time transmitted by the network is GMT time. You should now
adjust the time zone depending on the installation location.
This time is also used for the display in the "blueplanet web" portal.
1. Select time zone.
2. Confirm selection with <OK>.
Note:If there is no Internet available on the network, you have to make
the changeover to summer/wintertime manually.

1.9 View available inverters
All inverters are connected via a communication device.
1. Select the desired <inverter> under <communication device>.
Note: Up to 5 inverters can be connected to one communication device.
2. Adjust parameters via <parameter settings>.

1.10 Select Country & Grid Code
Under <Available Inverters>, select the
unit and in the <Inverter Values &
Settings> menu, open the <Parameter
Settings> menu <Settings for>.
1. Select <country / grid code>.
2. Select operator country and network
type according to network operator
requirements and confirm with <OK>.
3. Activate additional functions via <enable
functions> - see chapter 4.2 on page 16
Note: By default, all required parameters
are activated via the respective grid code.
Note: After changing the grid standard,
the unit performs a self-test. As a result, it
may take approx. 2 minutes until the unit
feeds in.
Note: If desired by the grid operator or
customer, further grid standard settings
can be made (e.g., setting reactive power,
Q(U) curve, see parameter, chapter 4.3).

1.11 Viewing the instantaneous values

Under <Available Inverters>, select the
desired device and open the <Inverter
Values & Settings> menu.
1. Select <Momentary values> and view
information about the installation.
Note: All measured values for your PV
system and the grid power are
displayed. In addition, the daily and yield
values are displayed according to solar
feed-in.
Note: The measured values are only
displayed for the selected unit. The
evaluation of all inverters can only be
carried out via our "blueplanet web"
monitoring portal.
2. View current power and power factor
3. View pending errors via <Error Code>.
Note: In the event of a pending error,
please refer to the error code list in
chapter 7.1 on page 31

1.12 View Modbus Address

Under <Available Inverters>, select the
desired device and open the <Inverter Values
& Settings> menu.
Note:By default, the Modbus address "3"
is stored here and should not be changed
for an inverter. This value is used for the
communication for data loggers and smart
meters.
1. If necessary, enter a new value for each
additional inverter that follows the first
communication device and confirm the
entry <Confirm>.

2Operation Mode
2.1 Operating mode for normal operation

You have made all the necessary basic
settings.
1. Switch to <Operating mode> to view
the parameters of an <Available
inverter>.
2 Now directly carry out the desired
parameter settings that are listed under
<Settings for>. The menu of the
<communication device> can be reached
via .
»The communication device is
connected to its mobile terminal.

2.2 Operating mode of the communication device
<Communication device> is registered
in the customer WLAN network and the
router is connected to the Internet.
Note: The device supports Modbus /TCP
and the usual SunSpec models. If there
are security concerns, write access can
be disabled via the SunSpec register.
Signal transmission is via an installed
RS485 line.
1. Select <Running mode>
- Data uploading mode – data from
connected devices is uploaded to the
KACO cloud server for evaluation.
- Modbus-TCP Server-Modus – By
default, the communication device
receives the Modbus TCP or SunSpec
commands and a connected data logger
responds to them.

2.3 Connecting the Mobile Device to the Router
Note:If you have configured the WLAN
network for the communication device and
the blue LED light of the communication
device is not lit, you must connect your
mobile terminal to the router.

Router is switched on and in the network.
1. Open the WLAN settings of your
mobile device and connect it manually
to the router.
2. Return to the app and click
<Operation Mode> to select the
communication device.
Note: If the communication device
does not appear: Deactivate the mobile
data of the mobile device and return to
the app. Click on <Search
communication devices> to find the
communication device.
-The network of your mobile device
must match that of the communication
device. If you still cannot find the
communication device, you can switch
off the router and connect directly via
the hotspot.

2.4 Monitoring the system via “blueplanet web”
Open <blueplanet web public>
Note: You will find the portal under:
https://kaco-
newenergy.com/de/blueplanet-web/.
1. Select <Register PV system free of
charge in blueplanet web public>.
2. From the drop-down menu, select
<blueplanet NX series>.
3. Registration is carried out via the
“Create new user” button, or with an
existing account via “Login”.
Note: Data is transferred after approx. 30-
60 minutes.
Note: After successful connection, the LED
<Blueplanet Web Status> under
<Communication Device> lights up green.
(LED Status - see Fig. 10)
Note: The portal version <blueplanet web
pro>, which is subject to a charge, offers a
greater range of functions.

3Additional functions
3.1 Changing the WLAN configuration
Open <Communication Device> menu.
Note: You can change the WLAN
configuration easily when you replace the
device, router or mobile device.
1. Select the menu item <Network
Properties>.
2. Via the drop-down menu field, select
network in the field <Network Name>.
3. Enter password for Network and
confirm the change with <Confirm>
Button.
Note: Data is transferred after approx. 30-
60 minutes.

3.2 Displaying details of the WLAN connection
<Communication device Properties>
opened via <Communication device>.
1. First check the quality via <Signal
Strength> of the WLAN connection.
Note: Interference-free communication
can only be ensured if the signal quality is
good. If necessary, improve the quality by
shortening the distance to the device and
removing interfering objects.
2. View the software version number of
the communication device and the
hardware version.
3. Option: Switch on DHCP if automatic IP
and subnet mask are to be used. (Only
possible via hotspot connection.)
4. If necessary, view or change the IP
address and subnet mask and check them
on the router.
5. Enter the IPv4 address of the gateway.
6. Assign DNS server address.

3.3 Reset faulty connection
<Communication device> opened.
Note: Communication device is restarted
via the <Restart communication device>
menu. Values set in the unit are not reset.
1. Press the <Confirm> button in the
warning to trigger a restart.
Attention: With <Reset communication
device>, all configurations already made
are reset to the factory settings.
2. Reset the communication device via
<Reset communication device>.

3.4 Changing network
<Communication device> opened.
1 Open the <Network Properties> menu.
The currently connected router is then
displayed.
2. Enter the password and transfer the
setting via the <Confirm> button.

Note: If the router is defective or no longer
accessible and the communication device
cannot establish a connection, as well as
the blue LED light on the communication
device is not lit, you will find the SSID of
the communication device hotspot with
the serial number of the communication
device in your WLAN list. You can connect
to the hotspot of the communication
device by entering the registration code on
the label as a password.

3.5 APN Setting
Note:APN (Access Point) This defines the
network path for all mobile data connections.
With some mobile phone providers, this must
be set here. Usually, however, the APN is
created automatically as soon as a SIM card is
inserted.
Open <Communication Device>.
1. Open the <APN setting>
2. enter your provider under <APN>.
Examples can be found at:

2. Enter the provider-specific <Username>
and <Password>.

4Configuring parameters
4.1 Authorisation to change parameters
<Momentary values and settings> menu -
opened via <Available communication
devices> and <Search inverter>.
1. Open <Settings> to set the parameters
for the initial commissioning.
Attention: No password is required for
initial parameterization.
However, if the parameters of the unit
need to be changed after initial
commissioning, it is necessary to enter the
password (protective function). The
password specific to the inverter must be
obtained from KACO Service.

4.2 Enabling functions
HINWEIS
You will find a description of the individual functions starting from chapter 4.3 at page 17. More
parameters will also be continuously added in future firmware versions. Therefore, please refer to the PDF
version of this application note to view important additions.

1. Select <Activate/Deactivate Functions> under <Settings for> and <select Inverter>.
2. Toggle the desired function after setting the respective parameter (see references).
-Activate Power Control (See Chapter 2.5 on page 11)

2. Set thresholds in accordance with the
following principles.

-First maximum threshold ≤ second

-Trigger time for the first threshold ≤
trigger time for the second
threshold ≤ trigger time for the
third threshold
