ThankyouforchoosingtheRAADAPTGPSModuleInterfaceforyourKenwoodTM‐
D710®transceiver.

I’dliketoprefacebystatingthatthereareamultitudeofoptionstointerfaceaGPSto
yourtransceiver.Theoptionsandpartsselectedforthiskitwerechosenforavailability
ofcomponents,easeofbuildandkeepingtheoverallcostoftheunitaffordable.

TheGPSmoduleusedistheGlobalSATEM406A®.ItfeaturesaSiRFstarIIIchipsetwith
ahighsensitivitybuiltinpatchantenna.TheEM406AhasanextremelyfastTTFFand
outputsNMEA0183dataprotocolat4800bps.

TheserialoutputoftheEM406AisTTL0V~2.85V.TheTM‐D710transceiverrequiresRS‐
232seriallevel.The1stphaseofthecircuit(R1,R2,R3,R4,R5,T1&Q1)booststheGPS
TXserialvoltagefrom2.85Vto5V.Thesecondphaseofthecircuit(R6,R7,R8,R9,R10,
T2,Q2,C1&D1)shiftstheseriallevelfromTTLtoRS‐232.(Re.Fig.1)



PCBAssemblyInstructions
TheRAADAPTGPSInterfacePCBistwolayered,silkscreenedandsoldermasked.The
assemblyofthePCBisfairlystraightforwardandcanbecompletedinlessthananhour.
You’llneedalowwattagefinepointpenciltypesolderingiron,thinsolder,andapairof
diagonalcutters.Somecomponentsarestaticsensitivesotakenecessaryprecautions.

Componentswillbeinstalledonthesilkscreensideoftheboard.Bendleadsoutslightly
onthebacksidetokeepthecomponentsfromfallingoutwhentheboardisflippedfor
soldering.Solderallcomponentsonthebacksideoftheboard(minusthe6pinSMD
GPSsocket).Trimtheexcessleadsaftereachstepwithdiagonalcutters.

Thereisagroundplaneincorporatedinthe2ndlayerofthePCB.Padsconnectedto
groundwillrequirealittleextratimewiththeirontoheatsufficiently.Alwaysapplythe
irontoboththeleadandthepadforagoodsolderjoint.


1. 6pinSMDGPSsocket(U2):Makesureall
thepinslineupandaresettingflushonthe
padsbeforesoldering.HINT:Useaclothes
pintoholdthesocketinplaceonthe
boardandtackinplaceononeoftheback
sidepads.Checkalignmentofpins/flush
contactandfinishsolderingeachpin.
2. Resistors(R1‐R10):Orientationforeach
resistorisnotcritical;however,makesure
thecorrectresistorisplacedineachbank.
Valuesaresilk‐screenedonthePCB.

3. 1N4148diode(D1):Orientationiscritical!
Insertthediodesothattheblacklineon
thediodelinesupoverthesilk‐screened
whitelineonthePCB.

4. 10uFcapacitor(C1).Orientationiscritical!
Insertthecapacitorwiththeshortleadin
thenegative(‐)markedthru‐hole.The
capacitoristobefoldedoverinahorizontal
positionpriortosoldering.
5. 78055Vregulator(U1):Ensurethe
regulatorissettingflatonthePCBpriorto
soldering.Aftersolderingonepad,ensure
itremainsflatbeforesolderingtheother
twopads.
NOTE:Iftheregulatorisnotflatagainst
thePCB,itcancauseinterferencewiththe
powerandserialcableconnectionsduring
caseassembly.


6. Transistors(Q1,Q2,T1&T2):Orientationis
critical!Insertthetransistorssotheflat
sidelinesupwiththeflatedgeonthesilk
screen.The2N3904’sgointhepositions
marked“04”onthePCB.The2N3906’sgo
inthepositionsmarked“06”onthePCB.
7. 5pinright‐angleheader:Inserttheright
angleheadersotheconnectionsareover
the5vregulator.SolderONEpinonlyand
checkalignment.
8. Checkthatthepowerandserial
connectionsfitproperlyabovethe5V
regulator.Oncealignmentisverified,
solderremaining4pins.
9. Checkallpadsforshorts.Ifyouhaveany
shorts,don’tpanic.Heattheshortedsolder
upandblastitwithacanofair.Thisshould
cleartheshort.Re‐soldertheconnection.



CaseAssembly
Forthissection,you’llneeda#2phillipsheadscrewdriver,agoodpairoftweezers,
diagonalcutters,wirestrippersandelectricaltape.ReadthroughALLtheinstructions
priortobeginningassembly!


1. InserttherightangleRJ45plugcable
throughthelargeholeontherightsideof
themodulecase.Insertionwillbefromthe
exteriorofthecasetowardstheinterior.
Thecorrectlengthis3‐1/8”fromthe
outsideofthecasetotheendofthejack.
NOTE:Ifthefitistootight,usedrillbits
andprogressivelywidentheholebyhand
checkingfiteachtime.

2. TrimtheoutersheathingontheRJ45plug
cabletowhereitsabout3/8”outsidethe
RJ45punch‐downjackhousingwhenin
place.Thiswillexposetheinner8wires.
Trimthetranslucentpairseparator(X
shapedplasticinthecenter)backtowhere
theoutersheathingwasstripped.Be
carefulnottoclipanyofthe8wires.

3. Inserteachwireintothepunch‐downjack
accordingtotheBseriescolorcodes.
Wheninsertingthewires,visuallyestimate
thecorrectlengthofwireforwhenthejack
willbeinplace.Alittleextralengthis
betterthantooshort.Usethepunch‐down
captofullyseatthewiresintothejack.
NOTE:DONOTtrimtheexcesswireuntil
properlengthof31/8”(Re.Step1)is
confirmedwiththejackinplace!


4. Insertthepowercableintothepunchdown
jack.TheREDpowercablewiregoestothe
WHITE‐BROWNslot.TheBLACKpower
cablewiregoestotheGREENslot.Usethe
punch‐downcaptofullyseatthewiresinto
thejack.


5. Wrapthejackandpunchdowncapinto
placewithelectricaltapeandmountthe
jackintherectangularthrough‐holeonthe
leftsideofthecase.Therightangleplug
cableneedstorideinthebottomofthe
caseasshown.


6. InserttheGPSmodule(jumpercable1st)
intothecase.Useapairoftweezers(if
required)toguidethejumpercablethrough
thecaseopeningwhilefullyseatingthe
module.
7. InserttheassembledPCBintothecasewith
theGPSsockettowardstheGPSjumper
cable.YoumayneedtopulltheRJ45plug
cableintothecasetoallowclearancefor
thePCBtoslipunderneaththecable.
MountthePCBusingthefour#4x¼”
screws.PlugthepowercableontothePCB
payingattentiontopolarity.REDgoesto
(+),BLACKgoesto(‐).
NOTE:TheRJ45jackMUSTbeinplacein
thecasepriortomountingthePCB.


8. PlugtheGPSjumpercableintothe6pin
socketonthePCB.
NOTE:Agoodpairoftweezersisamust
forthisstep.Makesureyou’reinserting
thejumpercableconnectorintothesocket
correctlyasitisakeyedconnection.Using
thetweezers,aligntheconnectoroverthe
socketata90degreeangletothePCBand
pushtheconnectorSTRAIGHTdowninto
thesocket.Forcingtheconnectorintothe
socketatananglecandamagethesocket
pins.


9. Inserttheserialcableassemblythroughthe
smallholeontherightsideofthecase.
Insertionwillbefromtheinsideofthecase
towardstheexterior.Thecorrectlength
fromtheoutsideofthecasetotheendof
the2.5mmrightangleplugis3”minimum.
Strip¾”ofsheathingfromtheendofthe
serialcablebeingcarefulnottodamage
theinnershielding.
Twistthebareshieldwiresintoasingle
bundletobesoldered.
Slidethewirestrainreleifontotheserial
cablepriortosoldering.Solderthetwisted
shieldtothegroundsolderpoint.Solder
theREDwiretothemiddlesolderpoint.
SoldertheWHITEwiretothetipsolder
point(furthestawayfromplugend).
Replacetheplugjacket.
TIP:Thisisatoughstep.Useanexcess
pieceofcableshieldaroundtheplugand
clampinavice.Usealligatorclipsforextra
hands.Anyexcessserialcablelengthcan
betuckedintothecase.

10. PlugtheserialcableassemblyontothePCB
payingattentiontopolarity.Thetwisted
shield/BLACKwiregoesto(GND).The
WHITEwiregoesto(RX).TheREDwire
goesto(TX).Confirmtheserialcablelength
fromtheoutsideofthecasetotheendof
the2.5mmrightangleplugis3”minimum.


11. Slidethe2.5mmaccessoryjacknutoverthe
RED,WHITEandBLACKwiretails.Pushthe
RED,WHITE,andBLACKwiretailsthrough
theholeonthetopofthecase.Insertion
willbefromtheinsideofthecasetowards
theexterior.



12. SoldertheRED,WHITEandBLACKwiretails
tothe2.5mmjackasshowninthediagram.






13. Slidethejackintoplaceandthreadthenut
downtosecurethejack.

14. PlacetheGPScapoverthebackoftheGPS
moduleandsecureusingthetwo#4x½”
screws.Placethecaselidoverthebackof
thecaseandsecureusingthefour#4x¾”
screws.



15. Insertthereleaseleverthroughthesloton
thetopofthecase.Snapthereleaselever
capoverthebackofthereleaselever.Glue
maybeusedtopermanentlyadherethe
captothelever.



NOTE:Testyourassemblybeforepermanentlymountingtheinterfacetothebackof
thetransceiverhead!



