The KD-HDMIXCAT5 is an HDMI to CAT5 extender transmitter capable of resolutions up to
1080P and can be used with or without the supplied power adapter. This device is intended
for use with Key Digital’s KD-CAT5XHDMI (receiver) or KD-CAT5XCAT5 (CAT5 extender).

Installation Instructions
The KD-HDMIXCAT5 can receive power from either the HDMI connection or via the
supplied power adapter. When using the HDMI cable to deliver power to the unit,
performance is subject to the following factors:
Ability of the HDMI source to deliver the required power
Quality and length of the HDMI cable.
We recommend the use on non-shielded CAT5 cable for best performance.
1. Find a safe and convenient location for the KD-HDMIXCAT5 unit.
Before permanently securing the unit or final installation of cabling
behind walls or ceilings, test for proper operation of the unit and the
cables in your system.
2. Connections
Plug in the HDMI source cable to the “Input” port of the KD-HDMIXCAT5. If you
are not using the supplied power adapter, the “Power” LED should illuminate upon
plugging in the HDMI input cable if your HDMI source is powered on.
Connect one CAT5 cable to the “Control” output port of the KD-HDMIXCAT5 and
to the “Control” input port on the destination (KD-CAT5XHMDI, KD-CAT5XCAT5)
device.
At this point, if your HDMI source is powered on, you should see the green LED
light up on connected units. If it is not, make sure you have not crossed the
‘Control’ port cable with the ‘Data’ port cable.
Connect second CAT5 cable to the “Data” output port of the KD-HDMIXCAT5
and to the “Data” input port on the destination (KD-CAT5XHMDI, KD-CAT5XCAT5)
device.
The CAT5 outputs can feed either the KD-CAT5XHDMI (receiver) to convert back
to HDMI, or they can feed the KD-CAT5XCAT5, which is a CAT5 extender, to make
longer CAT5 runs more reliable.
3. Power
In order to insure the best possible performance from the KD-HDMIXCAT5, we
recommend using only the original Key Digital power supply.
If you are using the supplied power adapter, plug it into the power input jack on
the side of the unit. You should see the “Power” LED illuminate. (see Fig. 1)

Optional cable clips
Troubleshooting
Most issues with the KD-HDMIXCAT5 setup will involve resolution and distance
performance. If you experience problems (no image, video artifacts, picture dropout,
noise) here are a few things to try.
Use the shortest possible HDMI and CAT5 cables between devices.
Lower the output resolution of the image source.
Use the provided power supply for the KD-HDMIXCAT5 instead of relying on the
voltage in the HDMI cable to power the unit.
Use Key Digital HDMI cables.
Other possible problems can result from custom made CAT5 cables. CAT5 cables must
be terminated in accordance with TIA/EIA-568-A or TIA/EIA-568-B pin-pair assignments.

DVI applications for the KD-HDMIXCAT5
The KD-HDMIXCAT5 can also be used to extend DVI video cable runs.
For these applications, use DVI to HDMI (Key Digital model number KD-MFHDMI or
KD-FMHDMI) adapters.

Mounting the KD-HDMIXCAT5 unit
The KD-HDMIXCAT5 is shipped with a convenient mounting clip as an installation option.
Once you have verified operation of the unit with your cables, secure the mounting clip
to a convenient location. Carefully insert the KD-HDMIXCAT5 into the mounting clip
provided.
An optional cable clip (included) enables a method for securing HDMI cables to the
mounting bracket of the KD-HDMIXCAT5
4. LEDs
When a stable signal is established between your source and destination, the
red “Equalizer Active” LED will light. If this red LED indicator is blinking or not
illuminated, try shortening HDMI cable lengths or lowering the resolution of the
video signal.
