Single Core High Performance Processor Upgrade Procedure
This installation note is part of an upgrade kit that provides all of the parts and instructions needed to
upgrade the CPU assembly in a CXA Signal Analyzer to a single core high performance processor
with a removable solid state drive.

NOTE While the replacement disk drive has the Windows XP operating system loaded
onto it, the license that accompanies it in this kit is for Windows Vista. This is
being done within the scope of our license agreement with Microsoft and is
necessary at this time, as the instrument applications software is not supported or
qualified with any operating system other than Windows XP.

Overview
This upgrade will not only upgrade the instrument central processing unit (CPU) to a single core high
performance processor, it will also upgrade the instrument disk drive to a rear panel removable solid
state drive.
With the disk drive being replaced the instrument calibration data will need to be transferred to the
new disk drive during this upgrade process. Once the instrument calibration data has been transferred
to the new disk drive the instrument performance will remain as it was prior to the upgrade.
All user data will also be lost after this upgrade is complete, but it is up to the end user to have backed
up their data before sending it in for servicing, so this procedure will not cover backing up and
restoring of any user data.
The instrument model and serial numbers, as well as all installed license keys, will not need to be
transferred to the new disk drive while performing this upgrade, as the master copy of all of these is
stored on the instrument Midplane board assembly and will be automatically copied to the new disk
drive when the instrument first boots up.
The procedure outlined in this document will guide you through the following steps, which will need
to be followed closely, and performed in the order defined:

1. Pre-Upgrade Status Check
Before performing this upgrade you will need to know the status of the instrument being upgraded in a
couple of areas.
Pre-Existing Issues and Error Messages
Power the instrument on and verify that the instrument will not only boot up, but that the signal
analyzer application software will load properly. This would include verifying that there are no
error messages displayed in the Status Bar of the application window.
If there are any problem with the instrument at this point, including the presence of any error
messages, either repair the instrument prior to proceeding with this upgrade or make detailed
notes of the instrument status in the space provided below and address them once this upgrade
has been completed if they continue to be present.

Pre-Upgrade Instrument Software Revision
Determine the current instrument software revision and record it in the space below by pressing
System, Show, System on the instrument.

2. Calibration Data Backup
In order for the instrument being upgraded to not need all of the instrument adjustments and
performance verification tests to be run after this upgrade is completed the calibration data will need
to be backed up onto an external drive prior to removing the existing processor / disk drive assembly.
NOTE While the backing up and restoring of the calibration data to the new disk drive
will return the instrument performance to the state that it was prior to this upgrade
this does not guarantee that all instrument performance parameters meet their
specified values. A full instrument calibration would be required to verify this.
Follow the steps outlined below for your calibration data backup.
1. Connect a USB keyboard and mouse to two of the instrument rear panel USB ports.
2. Connect a USB storage device that has been scanned for virus to one of the front panel USB
port.
3. Press System, Alignments, Backup or Restore Align Data.
4. The Alignment Data Wizard window as shown in Figure 1 will appear.

5. Follow the on-screen instruction to backup the calibration data to the USB storage device.
The file will be saved with a .bak file suffix.

3. Hardware Installation
CAUTION Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage or destroy electronic components. All
work on electronic assemblies should be performed at a static-safe workstation.
Refer to the documentation that pertains to your instrument for information about
static-safe workstations and ordering static-safe accessories.
Removal
1. Turn off the instrument and remove the power cord from the rear panel.
2. Refer to Figure 2. Remove the existing CPU assembly from the instrument by removing the 6 rear
panel screws (1). The CPU assembly can be removed from the chassis by pulling straight out the
back. Use the two ejectors to pull the CPU assembly out from the chassis.

Replacement
1. Refer to Figure 3. With the ejectors pulled out, slide the new CPU assembly into the slot at the rear
of the instrument and push on the assembly to mate the connectors to the midplane assembly.
Secure the board with the ejectors.
2. Replace the six screws (1) that attach the CPU assembly to the chassis. Torque to 9 inch-pounds.

3. Locate the Windows Vista License Sticker from the kit and apply it to the rear of the instrument as
shown in Figure 4 covering the existing license sticker.

4. BIOS Setting Verification
There is one setting in the CPU BIOS that must be verified and may require changing when the CPU
assembly is replaced. This setting needs to be correct in order for the analyzer to always boot up
correctly.
• “IDE 2” must be set to #1 in the “Boot priority order”
Verifying Boot Priority
1. Connect an external USB keyboard and mouse to two of the instrument rear panel USB ports.
2. Turn on instrument power.
3. Confirm Agilent Technologies splash screen comes up within a few seconds as shown in Figure 5.
4. Press “F2” on the external keyboard when at the Agilent Technologies splash screen (as shown in
Figure 5) to enter the CPU BIOS Setup Utility (as shown in Figure 6).
