OVERVIEW

The JACKSON SAFETY* R60 AIRMAX ELITE* blower

is part of a system for protecting the respiratory

pathways.It works on the principle of positive

pressure.The belt-mounted blower unit delivers air

through a lter and via an air hose into a headpiece

(a helmet, hood or mask). The supply of ltered air

creates positive pressure inside the headpiece,

which prevents the external contaminated air from

entering the user’s breathing zone.

The supply of clean air also ensures the user

comfortable breathing without having to overcome

the resistance of the lters.

For adequate and ecient protection, it is necessary

to choose the correct combination of a respiratory

unit, suitable lters and a protective headpiece.

APPROVAL, REGULATORY

The R60 AIRMAX ELITE* powered air purifying

respirator is approved in accordance with

EN12941:1999. All parts of the system used must be

approved by the manufacturer and must be used in

accordance with the instructions in this manual.Failure

to follow all instructions for the use this protective

device may enadanger the user’s health or life.

IMPORTANT

These User Instructions must be followed carefully by all

users, issuers and those responsible for maintenance.

This PAPR must be used, issued or maintained only by

properly trained and qualied personnel and in accordance

with these User Instructions. Failure to carefully follow

all warnings, cautions, limitations and instructions could

reduce the protection of the PAPR and result in

serious injury, illness or death. Do not use for overhead

welding where there is a falling molten metal hazard.This

welding helmet/lter system does not provide protection

from molten metal and spatter during overhead welding.

Intended Use

This product helps protect against certain airborne

contaminants.For proper use, see

your supervisor, user instructions, or the standard

EN12941 The JACKSON SAFETY* R60 AIRMAX

ELITE R60 respiratory system must NOT be used in an

environment where life or health are directly endangered

(IDLH). Oxygen concentration in the surrounding area

must not drop under 17%.Type and concentration of the

contaminants in the working place must be known to the

user.This PAPR system must not be used in unventilated

areas such as tanks, pipes, canals etc.

The PAPR system must not be used in areas with danger

of explosion.

The JACKSON SAFETY* R60 AIRMAX ELITE* respiratory

system is supplied together with particle P R SL lter and

thus it protects the user in environments contaminated

with particles.

WARNING

Violation of any of the conditions of use voids the warranty.

Replace the lters every time you feel a change of smell in

the air coming in from the unit.

Use ONLY certied original lters designed for your

respiratory unit!

Use the respiratory system only with the blower unit

switched on. (If the blower unit is switched o, the

respiratory system incorporating a hood gives little or no

respiratory protection. Also there is a risk of high

concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) and of oxygen

reduction inside the headpiece.)

Check the air ow before use.

If the blower unit stops working for any reason, the user

must leave the contaminated area immediately.

Attention! During a period of really hard work, pressure may

decrease inside the hood if the user’s breathing becomes

too intense and thus the protective eect can decrease.

Make sure that the headpiece ts the user’s face perfectly.

Only then the ecacy of the system is sucient. The

protective eect of the complete system is reduced if the

seal of the headpiece is not tted properly, for example,

due to beards or long hair breaking the seal.Make sure that

the air hose doesn‘t make a loop and doesn’t get caught on

something in the surroundings.

USE INSTRUCTIONS and LIMITATIONS

Intended Use

This product helps protect against certain airborne contaminants.For proper use, see

your supervisor, user instructions, or the standard EN12941.

Operating the Blower Unit

Battery

IMPORTANT!

• Batteries are supplied uncharged. Always charge the battery

before the rst use.

• Use only JACKSON SAFETY* R60 AIRMAX ELITE* charger to

charge R60 AIRMAX ELITE* batteries.

• The battery charger is NOT designed for outdoor use – use

ONLY in environments protected from rain and humidity.

• Fully inspect the battery, charger, and cords for damage before

every use or charging. Do NOT use a damaged battery

or charger.

• Do NOT charge the battery in an environment which is

potentially explosive.

• Charge batteries in temperatures between 32-115°F (0-45°C)

• Disconnect the charger from AC power when not in use.

• The battery charger must NOT be used for other purposes than

those intended by the manufacturer.

• Improper use or storage of the battery or charger could

lead to overheating, ignition or explosion.

Installing the battery –Insert the battery bottom of the blower unit and slide it in until it

is secured by the latch.

Charging the battery

• The battery can be charged while in the blower or while

separated from the blower.

• Do not charge battery while Blower is Running

• Use only a JACKSON SAFETY* R60 AIRMAX ELITE* charger

when recharging the battery.

1. Fully inspect the battery,

charger, and cords for damage

before

every use or charging.Do NOT

use a damaged battery or charger.

2. Plug the charger into a suitable AC

power source (110-120V)

3. Connect the charger to the charging

socket located at the back of the battery.

The charging process is indicated by the

red LED.

4.The indictor LED on the charger will

turn green when the battery is

fully charged.

5. Disconnect the battery from the

charger and the charger from the

AC power source.

Removing the battery – While depressing

the latch holding the battery in place, slide

the battery out of the blower unit.

PAPR Assembly

1. Insert the charged battery into the bottom of the blower.

2. Verify the lters are tightly seated (nger tight plus at least 1/8 additional turn)

3. Initial assembly, slide the hose cover to the desired location on the hose and

secure and trim the hose cover ties.

4. Attach the air hose to the blower.

5. Attach the air hose to the head piece.

Check before each use

Fully charge the battery before rst use.

Before each use, make sure that:

• all the components are intact, with no damage. Do not use the blower if it has any

cracks, holes or leaks.Change the damaged or worn parts before use. Maintain

air hoses and sealing elements in good condition.

• the hose is properly and tightly connected to the blower and to the headpiece.

• air is supplied to the headpiece after the blower is turned on.

• there is a sucient level of air ow from the blower.

Powering blower on and o

The blower unit is turned on or o by pressing the button on the unit’s control

panel for at least 2 seconds.

Adjust air owrate

Once the blower unit is on, it can be toggled between low (160 lpm) and high (210 lpm)

owrates by briey pressing the power button. The maximum air owrate

mode provides the user with more cooling and additional airow for strenuous

work, but at reduced battery life. At low temperatures, the higher air ow may be

uncomfortable.

Displays and Alarms

The R60 AIRMAX ELITE* blower is equipped with an advanced control system which

maintains the selected air ow at a constant rate throughout the charge of the

battery and regardless of the level of lter clogging. In case the system is not able

to maintain the high air owrate, it automatically switches to the low owrate mode.

In case of a further decrease of the air ow (under the minimal limit of 160 lpm),

audio and vibration alarms go o and the display ashes. In this case, the user

must stop working immediately, leave the contaminated area and change either

the lters or the battery (or, if necessary, to charge the battery).

The user display provides the status of the battery charge and level of lter

clogging.

The red LEDs indicate the charge level of the battery. 5 illuminated LEDs

represent a maximum charge level, 1 illuminated LED represents a minimum

charge level and the user will be warned about this low charge level of the battery

by means of an alarm signal.It is necessary to change the battery or to recharge it.

Yellow LEDs indicate the actual level of lter clogging.The LEDs light up

gradually according to the level of gradual lter clogging. When all 5 LEDs are lit

up, the lters are clogged to a maximum level and the user will be alerted by an

alarm about the insucient air ow. The lters must be changed immediately.

Altitude – The lower density of air at higher elevations impacts the blower control

system.At higher elevations, the blower will exhaust the battery more quickly and

the system will sense that the lters are more clogged than they would be at sea

level. These eects will start to be noticed at elevations above approximately 3200

feet (1000 meters).The R60 AIRMAX ELITE* blower is not recommended for use in

elevations above 5280 feet (1600 meters).

Filter

The R60 AIRMAX ELITE* blower is equipped with a high-eciency (HE) particle lter.

The lters provided with the R60 AIRMAX ELITE* blower kit each include a pre-lter

and spark arrester. These are found under the snap-on lter cover that has the

oval JACKSON SAFETY* logo. The pre-lter extends the operating life of the main

lter by capturing coarse particles. The spark arrester helps protect the main lter

from damage by sparks and welding spatter.

The level of lter clogging must be regularly checked by means of the air ow test.

The blower may also alarm when the lters are clogged.

FILTER CLOGGING – LOW FLOWRATE - When a low owrate condition is

encountered, try replacing the pre-lters rst. If the low owrate condition is not

resolved, you will need to to replace the HE lters. Always change both pre-lters

or lters together, not just one.

Use ONLY new R60 AIRMAX ELITE* pre-lters and lters approved for use with this

blower.

From the hygienic point of view, it is not recommended to leave the lter in the unit

for more than 180 working hours.

Replacing Filters

Two R60 AIRMAX ELITE* HE lters are required for the R60 AIRMAX ELITE* blower

to work properly.

Always replace both lters at the same time.

• Remove lters from the blower by unscrewing each lter counterclockwise.

• Inspect both lter cavities in the blower for damage to the sealing ring. Clean any

dirt or debris from the cavity and threads.

• New lters are screwed into the blower clockwise until tightly seated into the unit’s

body. Tighten at least 1/8 turn past when you feel the lter’s seal seat in the

blower. Ensure the lters are fully tightened to ensure proper sealing.

Installing the pre-lter and the spark arrestor

• Remove lter cover by lifting the JACKSON SAFETY* logo tab.

• Place the metal mesh spark arrester into the FILTER COVER.

• Place the pre-lter into the cover on top of the spark arrester, recess rst.

• Snap the lter cover back onto the lter. The pre-lter should be between the mesh

spark arrester and the main body.

Air ow test

1. Disconnect the air hose from the blower.

2. Attach the air ow indicator to the unit.

Turn on the blower.If the blower unit does not provide at least 160

lpm of air, ensure the use of clean pre-lters and lters and a fully

charged battery and re-try. If the problem persists, follow the

troubleshooting instructions or contact the manufacturer.

Troubleshooting

Belt

The waist belt holds the blower unit to the lower back.The buckles snap

together.The buckles are released by squeezing the top and bottom of

buckle.

DO NOT POSITION THE BLOWER UNIT ON THE FRONT OF THE BODY

OR WHERE IT CAN BE EXPOSED TO SPARKS.

Belt Adjustment

1.Adjust the length of the belt by sliding the belt through the

buckles to reach the desired length.

Adjust the elastic keepers to secure the loose tails of

the belt.

Belt Removal and Replacement

1.To remove the belt from the blower, depress the plastic

tabs on the inside of the belt near the blower unit to release

the belt attachment clips from the blower unit.

2.To attach the belt to the blower, snap the attachment clips

onto the rails on the blower.Note that there is a left and right side to

the belt and clips will only attach when correctly aligned.

Malfunction Possible cause Recommendations

The unit is not working at all The battery is discharged

(verication: the unit is working with a dierent fully

functional battery).

A defect in the motor, electronics or the charging

connector.

Charge the battery

(if the problem persists, replace the battery).

Contact customer service.

Low air ow The air hose or air distribution system is blocked.

The air is leaking through gaps.

The battery is out of power.

The lters are clogged.

Check and eliminate any possible obstacle.

Check all sealing elements and connections; check whether

the hose is damaged and without leaking spots.

Charge the battery.

Change the lters.

The unit is working only for a short time. The lter is clogged.

The battery is not charged suciently. Change the lter.

Charge the battery. (If the problem persists,

replace the battery.)

It is not possible to charge the battery. Charger malfunction.

Faulty battery connector. Contact customer service.

Check the battery’s contact

It is not possible to charge the battery suf-

ciently enough. The battery’s life cycle is at its end. Replace the battery.

If there is any defect, fault, a sudden decrease or increase of air supply whilte the user is working in a contaminated working place, it is absolutely

necessary to leave the site immediately and verify the following:

• PAPR is properly assembled. • Battery has power

• No obstructions or blockages, such as kinked hose or blocked lters • Filters are not clogged

• No damage to the unit, such as perforated or cracked hose, blower or lter. • Face seal is not damaged.

purchasers and are warrantied for the following periods from end user’s date of purchase (veried by valid sales receipt) (a) ve years for Balder Technology auto darken-

ing lters; (b) two years for all other auto darkening lters; (2) comply with all K-C labeling representations; and (3) are manufactured in compliance with all applicable

federal, state, and local laws in eect at the time and place of manufacture of the products. THIS WARRANTY IS IN LIEU OF ALL OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR

MAX ELITE* PAPR blower unit are covered by a 24-month guarantee starting on the day of purchase. Batteries have a 6 month warranty starting on the day of purchase.

A warranty claim must be claimed with the KCP distributor.When claimed, it is necessary to submit proof of purchase (an invoice or a delivery note).

The warranty can only be accepted when it is found out that no changes have been made to the ltration unit and/or the charger.

The warranty does not apply especially to defects caused by a late change of lters or by using a lter damaged by cleaning and/or by blowing the lters through.

Maintenance and cleaning

Each time you stop working, clean and inspect the AIRMAX ELITE* blower and replace any damaged parts.

• Clean the outer surface of the blower with a soft cloth dampened in a solution of water and regular dish washing liquid. Wipe all parts

dry after cleaning!

• Disconnect the hose from the blower and headpiece and clean with water.

• Cleaning must be carried out in a well-ventilated room. Be careful not to breathe in the harmful dust settled on individual parts of the

blower and its accessories!

• Never use any detergents with solvents or any abrasive cleaners.

• Water or any other liquids must NOT penetrate into the blower!

Storage

• Store the AIRMAX ELITE* system components at 15-120°F (-10 to 50°C) and 20-80% relative humidity.

• Batteries will gradually discharge during storage.

• Shelf life of unopened blowers is 2 years.
