ADDENDUM: Ethernet Cross Cable Wiring Connection
P/N: 2900 - 9999993 A1
This addendum describes the correct wiring for crossover cable connections
and replaces the opening paragraph in the "Connecting the ETHERNET Port
directly to a PC (Crossover Cable)" section in the User Manual as follows:
Connecting the ETHERNET Port directly to a PC (Crossover Cable)
You can connect the Ethernet port of the machine to the Ethernet port on your
PC, via a crossover cable with RJ-45 connectors.
Table 1 and Figure 1 define the color codes for the two existing standard types
of cross cables used in the industry. Table 2 defines how to connect the wires
to the connectors on both ends of the cable.
When manually connecting the ends of a cable, both connectors must follow
the same standard (either EIA /TIA 568A or EIA /TIA 568B).

3 Overview
The VP-8x8A is a high performance 8x8 RGBHV Matrix Switcher for
high-resolution video and balanced stereo audio signals. The VP-8x8A is
HDTV compatible and lets you simultaneously route any or all of the 8 inputs
to any or all of the 8 outputs.
In particular, the VP-8x8A 8x8 VGA / UXGA / Audio Matrix Switcher includes:
 A video bandwidth of over 350MHz that ensures transparent performance
even in the most critical applications
 16 preset memory locations for quick access to common video and audio
configurations and audio gain status for each output
 Automatic detection of the connected input signals (the respective button
illuminates)
 A delayed switching mode (ranging from 0 to 3.5sec

) for clean transitions
(seamless switching) when switching between non-genlocked sources
 DC coupled video inputs and outputs
 Audio-follow-video and breakaway options
 16 stereo audio input signals, letting you choose for each input either a
balanced stereo audio input signal on a 5-pin terminal block connector, or
an unbalanced stereo audio input signal on a 3.5mm mini plug
 16 stereo audio output signals that can be used simultaneously: 8
balanced stereo audio signals on 5-pin terminal block connectors, and 8
unbalanced stereo audio signals on 3.5mm mini plugs
 Potentiometers next to each input, to manually adjust the input audio signal
level
 Two output audio level control buttons for adjusting the signal level of each
output
 Measurement and indication of the audio level for each output, in relative dB
 A TAKE button, which allows you to place multiple switches in a queue
and then activate them simultaneously with one touch of this button
 A LOCK button to prevent tampering with the front panel
Control the VP-8x8A using the front panel buttons, or remotely via:
 RS-485 or RS-232 serial commands transmitted by a touch screen system,
PC, or other serial controller
 The Kramer Infra-Red remote control transmitter
 The ETHERNET

The VP-8x8A is dependable, rugged, and fits into two vertical spaces (2U) of
a standard 19” professional rack

To achieve the best performance:
 Connect only good quality connection cables, thus avoiding interference,
deterioration in signal quality due to poor matching, and elevated noise
levels (often associated with low quality cables)
 Avoid interference from neighboring electrical appliances that may
adversely influence signal quality and position your Kramer VP-8x8A
away from moisture, excessive sunlight and dust
3.1 Terminology Used in this User Manual

Dynamic Host
Configuration
Protocol (DHCP)
Allows the network administrator to distribute IP addresses from a central point and
automatically send a new IP address when an Ethernet point is plugged into a different
network location
Gateway A network position serving as an entry to another network. On the Internet, a node or
stopping point can be either a gateway node or a host (end-point) node.
IP Address A 32-binary digit number that identifies each sender or receiver (within a network via a
particular server or workstation) of data (HTML pages or e-mails) that is sent in packets
across the Internet. Every device connected to an IP network must have a unique IP
address. This address is used to reference the specific unit.
Local Area Network
(LAN) Computers sharing a common communications line or wireless link, which often share a server within a defined geographic area.
Media Access
Control (MAC)
Address
A computer's unique hardware number (or address) in a LAN or other network. On an
Ethernet LAN, the (MAC) address is identical to the Ethernet address.
Transmission
Control
Protocol/Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP)
The basic communication language or protocol of the Internet that breaks the message
into appropriately sized packets for the network, and can be used as a communications
protocol in an intranet or an extranet.

5 Installing the VP-8x8A on a Rack
This section describes what to do before installing on a rack and how to rack
mount.
Before Installing on a Rack
Before installing on a rack, be sure that the environment is
within the recommended range:
Operating temperature range +5 to +45 Deg. Centigrade
Operating humidity range 5 to 65 % RHL, non-condensing
Storage temperature range -20 to +70 Deg. Centigrade
Storage humidity range 5 to 95% RHL, non-condensing
CAUTION!!
When installing on a 19" rack, avoid hazards by taking
care that:

It is located within the recommended environmental conditions, as the operating ambient temperature of a
closed or multi unit rack assembly may exceed the room
ambient temperature.

Once rack mounted, enough air will still flow around the machine.
3
The machine is placed straight in the correct horizontal position.
4
You do not overload the circuit(s). When connecting the machine to the supply circuit, overloading the circuits
might have a detrimental effect on overcurrent
protection and supply wiring. Refer to the appropriate
nameplate ratings for information. For example, for fuse
replacement, see the value printed on the product label.

The machine is earthed (grounded) in a reliable way and is connected only to an electricity socket with
grounding. Pay particular attention to supply
connections other than direct connections to the branch
circuit (for example, the use of power strips), and that
you use only the power cord that is supplied with the
machine.
How to Rack Mount
To rack-mount the machine:

Attach both ear brackets to the machine. To do so, remove the
screws from each side of the
machine (3 on each side), and
replace those screws through
the ear brackets.

Place the ears of the machine against the rack rails, and insert
the proper screws (not
provided) through each of the
four holes in the rack ears.
Note that:
In some models, the front panel
may feature built-in rack ears
Detachable rack ears can be
removed for desktop use
Always mount the machine in the
rack before you attach any cables or
connect the machine to the power

6 Connecting the VP-8x8A
This section describes how to:
 Connect the VP-8x8A rear panel (see section 6.1)
 Connect a balanced stereo audio input/output (see section 6.2)
 Connect the VP-8x8A to a controlling device via RS-232 (see section 
6.3), RS-485 (see section 6.4) and/or the ETHERNET (see section 6.5)
 Set the dipswitches (see section 6.6)
 Connect several VP-8x8A machines (see section 6.7)
6.1 Connecting the VP-8x8A Rear Panel
To connect

the VP-8x8A, as illustrated in the example in Figure 4, do the
following

:
1. Connect up to eight VGA/UXGA computer graphics sources to the HD15F
INPUT connectors.
2. Connect a balanced

stereo audio source to the INPUT 1 balanced stereo audio
5-pin terminal block connector

.
3. Connect an unbalanced stereo audio source (for example, the Computer’s
audio source) to the INPUT 8 UnBal 3.5mm mini-plug connector

.
4. Connect the eight OUTPUT connectors to up to eight VGA/UXGA video
acceptors (for example, displays).
5. Connect the eight OUTPUT terminal block connectors to up to eight
balanced

stereo audio acceptors (for example, balanced stereo audio
amplifiers with speakers) and/or the eight 3.5mm mini-plug connectors, to up
to eight unbalanced stereo audio acceptors (for example, an unbalanced stereo
audio recorder).
6. Set the dipswitches (see section 6.6).

2 Switch OFF the power on each device before connecting it to your VP-8x8A. After connecting your VP-8x8A, switch on its
power and then switch on the power on each device. DO NOT push in the rear panel Flash Program “FLASH PROG” button
(item 8 in Table 3) and DO NOT push in the underside Flash Program “Reset” button. These are only used for upgrading to
the latest Kramer firmware (see section 8)

6.2 Connecting the Balanced Audio Inputs/Outputs
Figure 5 illustrates how to wire a balanced input/output connection:

6.3 Controlling via RS-232 (for example, using a PC)
To connect a PC to the VP-8x8A unit, using the Null-modem adapter
provided with the machine (recommended):
 Connect the RS-232 DB9 rear panel port on the Master VP-8x8A unit to
the Null-modem adapter and connect the Null-modem adapter with a
9-wire flat cable to the RS-232 DB9 port on your PC
To connect a PC to the VP-8x8A unit, without using a Null-modem adapter:
 Connect the RS-232 DB9 port on your PC to the RS-232 DB9 rear panel
port on the Master VP-8x8A unit, as Figure 6 illustrates

6.4 Controlling via RS-485
You can control a VP-8x8A unit via an RS-485 controller, for example, a PC
(equipped with an RS-485 interface) or a Master Programmable Remote Control
system such as the Kramer RC-3000, previously known as the VS-3000.
To connect an RC-3000 to a VP-8x8A unit (see Figure 7):
1. Connect the RS-485 terminal block port on the RC-3000 to the RS-485 port
on the VP-8x8A unit, as follows:
Connect the “ A” (+) PIN on the RS-485 rear panel port of the RC-3000 to
the “ A” (+) PIN on the RS-485 rear panel port of the VP-8x8A unit
Connect the “ B” (-) PIN on the RS-485 rear panel port of the RC-3000 to
the “B” (-) PIN on the RS-485 rear panel port of the VP-8x8A unit
If shielded twisted pair cable is used, the shield may be connected to the
“G” (Ground) PIN on one of the units (for example, on the RC-3000)
2. Use the SETUP dipswitches to set the VP-8x8A unit to a Machine # other
than 1, according to Table 9. Set the other SETUP dipswitches on the
VP-8x8A unit, as follows:
Set DIP 5, DIP 6, and DIP 7 OFF
Set DIP 8 ON (for RS-485 Line Termination with 120) if it is the only
machine being controlled via this RS-485 line (if multiple machines are
being controlled, then only the last one on the RS-485 line should be set
with DIP 8 ON)

6.5 Controlling via ETHERNET
You can connect the VP-8x8A via the Ethernet, using a crossover cable (see
section 6.5.1) for direct connection to the PC or a straight through cable (see
section 6.5.2) for connection via a network hub or network router

6.5.1 Connecting the ETHERNET Port directly to a PC (Crossover Cable)
You can connect the Ethernet port of the VP-8x8A to the Ethernet port on
your PC, via a crossover cable with RJ-45 connectors, as Table 5 and Figure 8
define.

After connecting the Ethernet port, configure your PC as follows:
1. Right-click the My Network Places icon on your desktop.
2. Select Properties.

3. Right-click Local Area Connection Properties.
4. Select Properties.
The Local Area Connection Properties window appears.
5. Select the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click the Properties Button (see
Figure 9).

6. Select Use the following IP Address, and fill in the details as shown in
Figure 10.
7. Click OK.

6.5.2 Connecting the ETHERNET Port via a Network Hub (Straight-Through
Cable)
You can connect the Ethernet port of the VP-8x8A to the Ethernet port on a
network hub or network router, via a straight-through cable with RJ-45
connectors, as Table 6 defines:

6.5.3 Control Configuration via the Ethernet Port
To control several units via the Ethernet, connect the Master unit
(MACH NO. 1) via the Ethernet port to the LAN port of your PC. Use your
PC initially to configure the settings (see section 6.5).
