Getting Started
We recommendthat you:
•Unpack the equipment carefully and save the original box and packaging materials for
possible future shipment.
•Reviewthe contents of this user manual.

application programs, and to check if firmwareupgrades are available (where appropriate).
Achieving Best Performance
•Use only good quality connection cables (we recommendKramerhigh-performance,
high-resolution cables) to avoid interference, deterioration in signal quality due to poor
matching, and elevated noise levels (oftenassociated with low quality cables).
•Do not secure the cables in tight bundles or roll the slack into tight coils.
•Avoid interferencefrom neighboring electrical appliances that may adversely influence
signal quality.
•Position your Kramer VS-42H2 away from moisture, excessivesunlight and dust.

•This equipment is to be used only inside a building. It may only be connected to other
equipment that is installed inside a building.
•For products with relay terminals and GPI\O ports, please referto the permitted rating
for an external connection, located next to the terminal or in the User Manual.

VS-42H2 is a high quality, 4x2 matrix switcher forHDMI™signals that reclocksand equalizes
the signals and routes any one of four HDMI,HDCP-compliantsources (selectable) to any or
all outputs simultaneously.
VS-42H2 provides exceptional quality, advanced and user-friendly operation, and flexible
control.

compliant signals to 2 18G 4K@60Hz (4:4:4) HDR HDMIHDCP-compliantoutputs at up

Controlling your VS-42H2
Control your VS-42H2 directly via the front panel push buttons (with on-screen menus), or:
•By RS-232 serial commandstransmitted by a touch screen system,PC, or other serial
controller.
•Remotely,from the infrared remote-control transmitter.
•Via the Ethernet using built-in user-friendly web pages.
Using the IR Transmitter
You can use the RC-IR3IR transmitter to control the machine via the built-in IR receiveron
the front panel or, instead, viaan optional external IRreceiver. The external IR receivercan
be located up to 15m away from the machine. This distance canbe extended to up to 60m
when used with three extension cables.
Beforeusing the external IR receiver,be sure to arrange for yourKramerdealer to insert the
internal IR connection cable with the 3.5mm connectorthat fits into the REMOTEIRopening
on the rear panel. Connect the external IR receiver to the REMOTEIR 3.5mm connector.

Connect to a PC to upgradethe firmware.
FACTORY PROG
VIA RS-232 Upgrade Switch
Press to upgradethe firmware via the RS-232 port, release fornormal
operation.
ETHERNET RJ-45
Connector
Connect to a PC viaa LAN.
RESET Switch
Press while power-cycling the device to reset to factory default
parameters.
5V DC Connector
Connect to the power adapter, center pinpositive.

Output Connectors
Connect to up to two HDMI acceptors.

Mounting VS-42H2
This section provides instructions formounting VS-42H2. Beforeinstalling, verify that the
environment is within the recommendedrange:
•Operation temperature –0to 40C (32 to 104F).
•Storage temperature –-40to +70C (-40 to +158F).
•Humidity –10% to 90%, RHLnon-condensing.
Caution:
•Mount VS-42H2before connecting any cables or power.
Warning:
•Ensure that the environment(e.g., maximum ambienttemperature & air flow)is
compatible forthe device.
•Avoid uneven mechanicalloading.
•Appropriate consideration of equipment nameplate ratings should be used for avoiding
overloading of the circuits.
•Reliable earthing of rack-mountedequipment should be maintained.
•Maximum mountingheight for the deviceis 2 meters.
Tomount the VS-42H2 in a rack:
Mount the unit in a rack using the recommendedrack adapter
(see www.kramerav.com/product/VS-42H2).
Tomount the VS-42H2 on a table or shelf:
•Attach the rubber feetand place the unit on a flatsurface.
•Fasten a bracketon each side of the unit and attach it to a flat
surface.

Connecting VS-42H2
Always switchoff the power to each devicebefore connecting it to your VS-42H2. After
connecting your VS-42H2,connect its power and then switch on the power to each device.

Toconnect the VS-42H2 as illustrated in the example in Figure 3:
1. Connect up to four HDMIsources, (forexample, Blu-ray players) to the HDMIInput
connectors .
2. Connect the two OUTHDMIconnectors to up to two HDMIacceptors,(forexample, LCD
displays with built-in speakers).
3. If required, connect a PC/controller to the RS-232port (see Connecting to VS-42H2
via RS-232 on page 10).
4. Connect the power adapter to the deviceand plug the power adapter into the mains
electricity (not shown in Figure 3).
5. If required, acquire the EDID.

Connecting to VS-42H2 via Ethernet
You can connectto the VS-42H2 via Ethernet using either of the following methods:
•Directly to the PCusing a crossovercable (see Connecting the Ethernet Port Directly to
a PC on page 8).
•Via a network hub, switch, or router, using a straight-through cable (see Connecting the
Ethernet Port viaa Network Hubor Switchon page 9).
If you want to connect via a router and yourIT system is based on IPv6, speak to your IT
department for specific installation instructions.
Connecting the Ethernet Port Directly to a PC
You can connectthe Ethernet port of the VS-42H2directly to the Ethernet port on yourPC
using a crossover cable with RJ-45 connectors.
This type of connection is recommendedforidentifying the VS-42H2 with the factory
configured default IP address.
After connecting the VS-42H2to the Ethernet port, configure your PC as follows:
1. Click Start > ControlPanel > Networkand Sharing Center.
2. Click Change Adapter Settings.
3. Highlight the network adapter you want to use to connect to the device and click Change
settings of this connection.
The Local Area Connection Properties window for the selected network adapter appears
as shown in Figure 4.

4. Highlight Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) by clickingon the item.
5. Click Properties.
The Internet Protocol Properties window appears as shown in Figure 5.
