Edge Controller Guide
Kwikbit Edge Controller Guide 7
2Description of the Kwikbit 60 GHz system
Kwikbit networks use a tree topology. The term site refers to a location in the network
where a Kwikbit device or devices are connected. A site may be a place where the network
tree branches out, or it may be a leaf on the network tree. The following diagram shows a
simple network layout with six sites.
Simplified Network Plan
One Kwikbit device (wired-LAN-connected) at the first site in the network tree functions as
the root hub. All devices at the root site take on a hub role(s). One must be assigned the
root hub role.
Additional sites on the network tree will have at least one device set to a remote role. The
leaves of the tree have a single remote device. For sites on the network tree where
branches divide, the remote device can be wired with additional devices. The additional
devices function as hubs which wirelessly connect to additional remote devices at leaf sites
or further branch sites on the network tree.
Wireless communications in the Kwikbit 60GHz system only take place between remotes
and hubs. Wireless links do not occur between two hubs or between two remotes.

Edge Controller Guide
8 Kwikbit Edge Controller Guide
The wireless radio frequency (RF) link between hubs and remotes is shown with red lines in
the diagram above. For each wireless link, the device with the hub role is closer to the root,
than the device with the remote role.
Note: The deployment must take care to avoid the formation of an island, that is, a
device, or set of connected devices, for which there is no path to the wired
LAN (i.e. no path to the root).
Site Survey
A site survey should be completed for your planned network. Consider coverage, capacity,
interference areas, installation requirements, as well as any other issues.
Kwikbit can help with surveying your site, recommending a plan, physical installation,
further configuration and deployment. Contact us for more information.

3Deployment steps using the Edge Controller
Once your site survey is complete and you have a general network plan, determine how to
proceed based on your circumstances.
●If you are experienced at network installation, or have a Kwikbit site plan or
professional Kwikbit installation, you can install devices in the desired areas, then
plug in Edge Controller to formalize the plan, set security, provision devices and
adjust device configurations as needed to finish deployment of your Kwikbit
network.
●If you are less familiar with Kwikbit devices and their coverage areas, but have a
good working knowledge of your network, we recommend the following steps to
deploy your Kwikbit network.
1. Install the Edge Controller and the root hub device.
2. Log in to the Edge Controller.
3. Upload the Security Certificate (SSL certificate), then adjust Identity and
Networking settings.
4. Use the Edge Controller map plan to plan devices and links. Map plan enables
you to plan and visualize coverage, direction and role selection for devices
before installation, to help you determine suitable installation locations for
devices.
5. Use the resulting plan to install the Kwikbit devices in your network.
6. Provision the installed devices using the map plan you created.
7. Review and set device configurations.
8. Verify your network and adjust desired Security settings with Edge Controller.

3.1 Install Edge Controller and log into it
The Edge Controller requires a separate network connection to a corporate network or the
Internet for management and support.
1. Connect the Kwikbit device which will serve as the root hub to the Edge
Controller with a Category 5 (or higher) wired connection. A direct connection is
recommended.
Note: A direct connection between the root device and the Edge Controller on
the same local network and subnet simplifies installation and deployment.
In this case, the Edge Controller can locate and connect to Kwikbit devices
directly.
The Edge Controller uses multicast service discovery (mSD) and mDNS
protocols to locate Kwikbit devices.
However, if the Edge Controller cannot connect directly and must
communicate through a router, the root device should be configured as a
gateway hub during set up. See the step on Network information.
2. Connect the power cord to the Kwikbit Edge Controller and plug it in.
3. Connect an ethernet Cat 5e cable (or higher) from the LAN, corporate network,
router or other Internet source to the port labeled Network on the Edge
Controller.

Determine the IP address assigned to your Edge Controller
There are various methods to assign IP addresses such as DHCP, link-local and static.
The Network port defaults to DHCP assignment. This is the IP address you will use to log
into the local instance of your Edge Controller. Determine the IP address according to your
company’s network policy.
The Kwikbit port defaults to 169.254.1.1.
Enter the Edge Controller’s IP address in the address bar of a browser on your
computer
This brings up a login dialog. (If you are warned that the site
is not secure, use the Advanced button and click on the

3.2 Security Settings
Uploading the Security Certificate enables the communication needed to configure Kwikbit
network settings and devices. Airlink Passcode and SSID will be set later.
3.2.1 Upload the Security Certificate
The Kwikbit client certificate identifies the organization with administrative control over the
Kwikbit devices. After a Kwikbit device is locked to an organization name, it can only be
managed by that organization. Security Certificates are available from Kwikbit support
(support@kwikbit.com).
Note: Uploading the certificate is required to enable configuration of Kwikbit devices.
Additional Security Settings
After the network is installed, provisioned and verified, security settings for SSID and Airlink
Passcode will be done to provide further communication security for your network. See
Adjust Security: Airlink Passcode and SSID
Users, accounts and passwords and security

Note: If you have more than one hub device wired to the EC, it is also listed under
Unprovisioned Devices. Drag it to the root site and provision it as a New
Device.
When the root device(s) begin operating as a hub, additional Remote device(s) will
connect as they are installed.
8. Add planned devices to the sites. Drag devices from the Planned Devices list at
the left, to each site in your general plan. Further tools help determine coverage
area, adjust direction, and add wire/radio links to refine your plan before device
installation. The plan is saved automatically, as you work.
Operational Tips:
●Adding planned devices enables you to see expected coverage as you make
adjustments –useful if you are unsure of coverage for the specific device.
●A good method for adding devices is to work from the root outward.
Establish the first level of branches of the network tree topology. Then
continue to the next.
●Each site, except for the root, requires one device acting in a Remote role.
●Each site may have additional devices acting in Hub roles to connect
branches in the network tree.
●Select Show Devices from the View menu to show/hide the Device Indicator
arrows for the planned direction for wireless links and Coverage area.
The ✓shows which site is selected.
Devices properties for the selected sites
are shown at the right.
