Based onthelatestDSPtechnologyandadoptingLeadshines'advancedcontrolalgorithms, Leadshine
MXserieswasspeciallydesignedtoalloweasyand rapidimplementationofmultipleaxisstepper
solutions. Withupto60VDCworkingvoltageand outputcurrentto6.0A,Leadshinemulti-axis
stepperdrivesarecapableofdrivingmultiple2phasesteppermotorsinframesize17,23,24,and 34.
Leadshinemultipleaxisstepperstrivescandrivesteppersystemsatexcellentlow-to-highspeed
performancewith high precision,extralowmotorheating,smooth movement,and lowmotornoise.
Theyarefeaturedwithantiresonance,multistepping,digitalsmoothing,optionsofdifferent
configurationforeachaxis,automaticidlecurrentreduction,and easyconfigurationsofmicro

Getting Start
To getstartyouneedonePCwith parallelport(DB25),three steppermotors(oneisalsook)andaDC
powersupplyforthefirsttimeevaluation.TheMX3660isdesignedforthoseapplicationsusing
Mach3asthemotioncontroller.Howeveritisalsopossibletocontrolitatraditionalmotion
controllerwhich generatestheSteps&Direction command.

Thehome/ limitinputoftheMX3660 canbeconnectedasfollows. Bydefaultthesedigitalinputsare
activeatlowlevel, meaningthatyouneedtoconnectthemtothenormalopenswitches. Ifthese
inputsarenotrequired foryourapplication,justleavethemunconnected.

MostoftheInverterinthemarketcanbecontrolledbyseveraldigitalinputsand oneanaloginput.
TheMX3660hasfourgeneralpurposedigitaloutputsofOC(opencollector)type.Theactual
connectionbetweentheMX3660andtheinverterdependsonthecontrolmodeoftheinverter.The
followingconnectiondiagram useoneoutputtostartthespindle,oneoutputtostopthespindleand
the0-10V outputto controlthespindlespeed.
Note1: Theseoutputsand the0-10V outputareonlyactivewhenaPCwithMach3/EMCisadopted
asthecontrolsystem.

TypicalConnectionsoftheMX3660 withCNC machine
Configuration
Forthemotordrivemodule,youonlyneedtoconfigurethepeakcurrentandmicrostepresolution
forthesteppermotor.A6-bitDIPswitchisusedforthispurpose.Usually,theRMScurrentofthe
driveshouldbeequaltothemotor sphasecurrent(orratedcurrent).Inpractice,thesettingcurrent
(RMSvalue)canbeless thanthemotor sphasecurrentiftheactualtorqueiscapableofmovingthe
loadatrequiredmotionvelocityand acceleration.Themicrostepresolutionsettingisdependingon
theapplication.Higherresolutionthatisgreaterthan1600 PPRonlyintroducesmoresmooth
motion.

Currentand micros stepresolution settingoftheMX3660
PowerSupplySelection
Toachievegooddrivingperformances,itisimportanttochooseasuitablesupplyvoltageandusea
matchingcurrentvalue.Generallyspeaking,supplyvoltagedeterminesthehighspeedperformance
ofthemotor,whileoutputcurrentdeterminestheoutputtorqueof thedriven motor(particularlyat
lowerspeed).Highersupplyvoltagewillallowhighermotorspeedtobeachieved,atthepriceof
morenoiseand heating. Ifthemotionspeedrequirementislow,it sbettertouselowersupply
voltageto decreasenoise,heatingand improvereliability.
Regulated or UnregulatedPower Supply
Bothregulatedandunregulatedpowersuppliescanbeusedtosupplythedrive.Ifregulatedpower
supplies(suchasmostswitchingsupplies.)areindeedused,itisimportanttohavelargecurrent
outputratingtoavoidproblemslikecurrentclamp,forexampleusing4Asupplyfor3Amotor-drive
operation.Ontheotherhand,ifunregulatedsupplyisused,onemayuseapowersupplyoflower

drawscurrentfromthepowersupplycapacitoroftheunregulatedsupplyonlyduringtheON
durationofthePWMcycle,butnotduringtheOFF duration.Therefore,theaveragecurrent
withdrawnfrompowersupplyisconsiderablyless thanmotorcurrent.Forexample,two3Amotors
can bewell supplied byonepowersupplyof 4Arating.
Selecting SupplyVoltage
Highersupplyvoltagecanincreasemotortorqueathigherspeeds,thushelpfulforavoidinglosing
steps. However,highervoltagemaycausebiggermotorvibrationatlowerspeed,anditmayalso
causeover-voltageprotectionorevendrivedamage.Therefore,itissuggestedtochooseonly
sufficientlyhighsupplyvoltageforintendedapplications,and itissuggestedtousepowersupplies
withtheoreticaloutputvoltageofdrivesminimum+10%todrivesmaximum –10%,leavingroom
forpowerfluctuation and back-EMF.

Protection Functions
Toimprovereliability,thedrivemoduleincorporatessomebuilt-inprotectionfunctions. Itusesone
redLEDtoindicatetheprotectiontype.Theperiodictimeofredis4s(seconds),and theblinking
timesofredLEDindicateswhatprotectionhasbeenactivated.Becauseonlyoneprotectioncanbe
displayedbyredLED,sothedrivewilldecidewhaterrortodisplayaccordingtotheirpriorities. See

Over-voltageProtection
Whenpowersupplyvoltageexceedsthelimits,protectionwillbeactivatedandredLEDwillblink
twicewithineach periodictime.

Caution
Whenaboveprotectionsareactive,themotorshaftwill befree ortheLEDwill
blink.Resetthedrivebyrepoweringittomakeitfunctionproperlyafterremoving
aboveproblems. Sincethereisnoprotection againstpowerleads(﹢,﹣)reversal,
itiscriticaltomakesurethatpowersupplyleadscorrectlyconnectedtodrive.
Otherwise,thedrivewill bedamaged instantly.

LeadshineTechnologyCo.,Ltd.warrantsitsproductsagainstdefectsinmaterialsandworkmanship
foraperiodof12 monthsfromshipmentoutoffactory.Duringthewarrantyperiod,Leadshinewill
either,atitsoption,repairorreplaceproductswhich proved to bedefective.
Exclusions
Theabovewarrantydoesnotextendtoanyproductdamagedbyreasonsofimproperorinadequate
handlings bycustomer,improperorinadequatecustomerwirings,unauthorizedmodificationor
misuse,oroperationbeyondtheelectricalspecificationsoftheproductand/oroperationbeyond
environmentalspecificationsfortheproduct.
