water column (0.87 kPa) for natural gas mod-
els and 10 inches water column (2.49 kPa) for
propane gas models.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Note: Installation and repair should be per-
formedbyaqualifiedserviceperson.Theappli-
ance should be inspected annually by a quali-
fied professional service technician. More fre-
quent inspections and cleanings may be re-
quired due to excessive lint from carpeting,
bedding material, etc. It is imperative that the
control compartment, burners and circulating
airpassagewaysoftheappliancebekeptclean.

safe,efficient,dependableinstallationforyour
appliance and vent system.

installation.
INTRODUCTION
The millivolt appliances are designed to oper-
ateoneithernaturalorpropanegas.Amillivolt
gas control valve with piezo ignition system
provides safe, efficient operation.
The electronic appliances are designed to op-
erate on either natural or propane gas. An
electronic intermittent pilot system provides
safe, efficient operation. External electrical
power is required to operate these units.
TheseappliancescomplywithNationalSafety
Standards and are tested and listed by Omni-
Test Laboratories (Report No. 116-F-18-5) to
ANSI Z21.50b-2002 (in Canada, CSA-2.22b-
2002), and CAN/CGA-2.17-M91 in both USA
and Canada, as vented gas fireplaces.
Installation must conform to local codes. In
the absence of local codes, installation must
comply with the current National Fuel Gas
Code,ANSIZ223.1(NFPA54).(InCanada,the
currentCAN/CGAB149installationcode.)Elec-
tricalwiringmust complywithlocalcodes. In
the absence of local codes, installation must
be in accordance with the National Electrical
Code, NFPA 70 - (latest edition). (In Canada,
thecurrentCSAC22.1CanadianElectricCode.)
PACKAGING
The assembled vented gas fireplace is pack-
aged with:
1 - one cartonedlog set located in firebox
area.
2 - one bag of glowing embers (rockwool)
located in the bottom compartment.
3 - one envelope containing the literature
packagewhichconsistsofthehomeowner's
manual, installation instructions, and war-
ranty;envelopeislocatedinthecontrolarea.
4 - one B-Vent Connector taped to the top of
the unit.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: Early signs of
carbon monoxide poisoning are similar to the
fluwithheadaches,dizzinessand/ornausea.If
youhavethesesigns,obtainfreshairimmedi-
ately. Turn off the gas supply to the appliance
and have it serviced by a qualified profes-
sional, as it may not be operating correctly.
Inselectingthelocation,theaestheticandfunc-
tionaluseoftheapplianceareprimaryconcerns.
However,ventsystemroutingtotheexteriorand
accesstothefuelsupplyarealsoimportant.Due
to high temperatures the appliance should be
locatedoutoftrafficandawayfromfurnitureand
draperies.Considerationshouldbegiventotraf-
fic ways, furniture, draperies, etc., due to el-
evatedsurfacetemperatures.Thelocationshould
also be free of electrical, plumbing or other
heating/air conditioning ducting.
The appliance should be mounted on a fully
supported base extending the full width and
depthoftheunit.Theappliancemaybelocated
on or near conventional construction materi-
als.However,ifinstalledoncombustiblemate-
rials, such as carpeting, vinyl tile, etc., a metal
or wood barrier covering the entire bottom
surface must be used.
These appliances may be used for bedroom
installations in the United States and are listed
accordingly. Theseunitsmaynotbeinstalled
in bedrooms in Canada.
Theseappliancesareequippedwithaninte-
gral combustion air door and actuator arm.
Combustionairkitsareoptionalandmustbe
installedbeforeremovingthesecuringscrew
allowing the movement of the combustion
air actuator arm (see Step 7 on page 8).
Testgageconnectionsareprovidedonthefront
ofthemillivoltgascontrolvalves(identifiedOUT
for the manifold side and IN for inlet pressure
sideforbothSITandHoneywellequippedappli-
ances. A ¹⁄₈" NPT test gage connection is pro-
vided on the electronic gas control valve adja-
cent to the outlet to the main burner.
Minimuminletgas pressuretotheapplianceis
5.0inches watercolumn(1.24 kPa)fornatural
gasand11 incheswatercolumn(2.74kPa)for
propane for the purpose of input adjustment.
Maximum inlet gas supply pressure to the
applianceis10.5incheswatercolumn(2.61kPa)
for natural gas and 13.0 inches water column
(3.23 kPa) for propane.
The appliance must be isolated from the gas
supplypipingsystem(byclosingitsindividual
manual shut-off valve) during any pressure
testingof thegassupply pipingsystemat test
pressures equal to or less than ¹⁄₂ psig (3.5)
kPa).
The appliance and its individual shut-off valve
must be disconnected from the gas supply
piping system during any pressure testing of
that system at pressures in excess of ¹⁄₂ psig
(3.5 kPa).
These appliances must not be connected to a
chimney or flue serving a separate solid fuel
burning appliance.

manufacture with either a Honeywell millivolt
gascontrolvalveorasSITmillivoltgascontrol
valve. Both valves have been tested with and
approvedforusewiththeseappliancesandare
listed accordingly.

GasVentRule–Gasventcapsarenotpermit-
ted within 8 feet (2.4 mm) of a vertical wall or
similar obstruction. Gas vent caps that are
located8'ormorefromaportionofabuilding
which extends at an angle greater than 45°
upward from the horizontal may terminate in
accordancewith Table 1 (Figure 3) ,provided
thatinnocaseshallanydischargeopeningon
the cap be less than 2' (610 mm) horizontally
fromthe roof surface (National Fuel GasCode
ANSI Z223.1 (NFPA 54) 7.6.2) (CAN/CGA

ASSEMBLY STEPS
The typical sequence of installation follows,
however, each installation is unique resulting
in variations to those described.
1. Construct the appliance framing.
2. Route gas supply line to appliance location.
3. Position the appliance.
4.Installtheventsystemandexteriortermina-
tion.
5.Fieldwireandinstalloperatingcontrolswitch.
6. Make connection to gas supply.
7. Install (optional) outside Air Kit.
8. Install the logs and rockwool.
9. Checkout appliance operation.
10. Adjust burner to ensure proper flame ap-
pearance.
PRE-INSTALLATION NOTES
The fireplace may be installed directly on a
combustiblefloor orraisedon aplatformof an
appropriate height. Do not place fireplace on
carpeting,vinylorothersoftfloor coverings.It
may, however, be placed on flat wood, ply-
wood,particleboardorotherhardsurfaces.Be
surefireplace rests on asolidcontinuousfloor
or platform with appropriate framing for sup-
portandsothatno cold air can enter the room
from under the fireplace.
The fireplace may be positioned and then the
framing built around it, or the framing may be
constructed and the fireplace positioned into
the opening.
Usually, no special floor support is needed for
the fireplace, however, to be certain:
1. Estimate the total weight of the fireplace
system and surround materials such as brick,
stone, etc., to be installed.
2. Measure the square footage of the floor
spacetobeoccupiedbythesystem,surrounds
and hearth extensions.
3. Note the floor construction, i.e. 2 x 6’s, 2 x
8’sor2x10’s,singleordoublejoists,typeand
thickness of floor boards.
Note: All framing dimensions calcu-
lated for 1/2" dry wall at the appliance
face. If sheathing the chase or finish-
ingwithotherthicknessmaterials,cal-
culations will need to be made.

Fireplace should be secured to side framing
members using the full length ¹⁄₂ inch nailing
flanges that are integral to the appliance at
each side. Use 8d nails (Figure 9 ) .
All appliances are equipped with a gas flex line
and shutoff valve attached directly to the gas
control valve. To quickly and easily complete
the gas line routing, use the gas flex line kit.
Step 3. Position the Appliance - Slide the
fireplaceintopreparedframingorpositionfire-
place in its final position and frame later.
4. Use this information and consult your local
building code to determine if you need addi-
tional support.
If you plan to raise the fireplace and hearth
extension, build the platform assembly then
positionfireplaceandhearthextension on top.
Secure the platform to the floor to prevent
possible shifting.
INSTALLING THE FIREPLACE
Step 1. Construct the Appliance Framing -
Frame appliance enclosure as illustrated in
Figures 4 through 7 on page 5 .
Note:Theframeddepth,25
⁵⁄₈ " (650mm)from
a framed wall, must always be measured from
a finished surface. If a wall covering such as
drywall is to be attached to the rear wall, then
the 25
⁵⁄₈ " (650 mm) must be measured from
the drywall surface. It is important that this
dimension be exact.
If the appliance is to be elevated above floor
level, a solid continuous platform must be
constructed.
The header may rest on the top metal spacers,
but must not be notched to fit around them.
Consult all local codes.
Step 2. Route Gas Supply Line - Route gas
line (Figure8) usingtechniquesandmaterials
prescribedbylocaland/ornationalcodes. Itis
recommended that a gas line of ¹⁄₂" or greater
diameter be used to allow full gas volume to
thefireplace.Unduepressurelosswilloccurif
thepipe is too small. The appliance, assetup
atthe factory, is best suited for use with a gas
lineroutedfromtheleftside. Thegaslinemay
however be alternately routed from the right
side.
When rigid pipe is used, an ANSI approved
manual shut-off valve and union must be in-
stalled upstream of the fireplace.
Ensure that a sediment trap is installed in the
existinggas line, ifnot,installa sediment trap
upstream to prevent moisture and contami-
nants from passing through trap to the appli-
ance controls and burners. Failure to do so
could prevent the appliance from operating
reliably.
IMPORTANT: HOLD GAS VALVE SECURELY
TO PREVENT MOVEMENT WHEN CONNECT-
ING TO INLET GAS LINE
An external regulator must be used on all
propane (L.P.G.) heaters to reduce the supply
tank pressure to 13" w.c. (maximum). Any
coppertubing usedtosupply propane(L.P.G.)
from the tank must be internally tinned.

fireplaceandsecuretothefloor bynailing with
8d nails
(Figure 10 ).

Step 5. Field Wiring –Refer to Section A for
millivoltappliancesandSectionBforelectronic
appliances.
A. Millivolt Wiring –Unitsmaybefittedat the
factory with either a Honeywell millivolt gas
control valve or an SIT millivolt gas control
valve. Both valves have been tested with and
approvedforusewiththeseappliancesandare
listed accordingly. Refer to
Figure 13 for
wiringofHoneywellsystemsand Figure14 for
wiring of SIT systems.
Thegasvalvehasbeensetinplaceandhasbeen
pre-wired at the factory. No additional wiring is
required unless the optional wall switch or op-
tionalremotecontrolkitistobeinstalled.Locate
theoptionalwall switchoroptionalremotecon-
trol in the desired location and connect the
millivolt wire
(see Figures 13 and 14 ).
CAUTION: DO NOT CONNECT THE WALL
SWITCH TO A 120V POWER SUPPLY.
Step 4. Install the Vent System & Exterior
Termination -
A - Connect the factory-supplied B-Vent con-
nector (found taped to the top of the unit) as
shown in
Figure 11 . Press it into the lanced
protrusionsinternaltotheflueoutletcollaras
farasthehorizontalrolledseamlocatedonthe
lower part of the connector, and secure with
four sheetmetal screws (# 8 or larger).
B - Slip an 8" (203 mm) B-Vent system over
the B-Vent connector and secure with four
sheetmetal screws (# 8 or larger), and install
the remainder of the B-Vent to the outside.
Minimum overall height of the vent system
and appliance must be 12' (3.66 m) vertical
(no offset) or 17' (5.18 m) when an offset up
to 45 degrees from the vertical is used. The
lower part of the offset must not begin less
than3'(0.914m)abovethetopofthefireplace
(see Figure 12 ) .
Maximumoverallheightoftheventsystemand
applianceshould not exceed 40 feet(12.19m).

B. Electronic Wiring –The electronic appli-
ance must be connected to the main power
supply. To install, route a 3-wire 120V 60Hz
power supply to the appliance junction box
and ground. Locate and install a low voltage
(24V)wallswitch(notsupplied)inthedesired
location. Connect the low voltage wire to this
switch
(see Figure 15 on Page 8 ).
InstalltheB-ventsysteminaccordancewith
the vent manufacturer's instructions.
CAUTION: THIS APPLIANCE CANNOT BE
VENTED HORIZONTALLY.

head screws previously removed.
Step6. ConnectingGas Line–Make gas line
connections. All codes require a shut-off
valve mounted in the supply line. Figure 18
on page 9 illustrates two methods for con-
nectingthegassupply.Theflex-linemethod
utilizing the gas flex line provided with the
appliance is acceptable in the U.S., how-
ever, Canadian requirements vary depend-
ing on locality. Installation must be in com-
pliance with local codes.
Secure all joints tightly using appropriate
toolsandsealingcompounds(ensurepro-
pane resistant compounds are used in
propane applications).
Turn on gas supply and test for gas leaks,
usinga gas leak test solution (also referred to
as bubble leak solution).
Note: Usingasoapywatersolution(50%dish
soap, 50% water) is an effective leak test
solution but it is not recommended, because
the soap residue that is left on the pipes/
fittingscanresultincorrosionovertime. Never
use an open flame to check for leaks.
A. Light the appliance (refer to the lighting
instructions label in the control compartment
or in the Homeowner's Care and Operation
Instructions).
B. Brush all joints and connections with the
gas leak test solution to check for leaks. If
bubbles are formed, or gas odor is detected,
turn the gas control knob to the “OFF”posi-
tion. Either tighten or refasten the leaking
connection and retest as described above.

The gas control valve is located in the lower
control compartment. To access the valve
remove the refractory access panel and set
aside
(Figure 16 ).
The millivolt control valve has a ³⁄₈"
(10 mm)NPTthreadinletport.Theelectronic
control valve has a ¹⁄₂" (13 mm) NPT thread
inlet port and is fitted with a ¹⁄₂" x ³⁄₈" (13 mm
x 10 mm) NPT fitting. Plan connections not
utilizing the ³⁄₈" NPT open end of the gas flex
line shutoff, accordingly.
C.Whenthe gaslinesaretestedandleakfree,
be sure to rinse off the leak testing solution.
D.Whenthegaslinesaretestedandleakfree,
observetheindividualtonguesofflameonthe
burner. Make sure all ports are open and
producing flame evenly across the burner. If
any ports are blocked, or partially blocked,
clean out the ports.
Step7.OutsideAirKits–Optionalcombustion
(outside make-up air) kits, Model FOAK-4 or
FAOK-4LD, may be used with these appliances.
Refer to the installation instructions packaged
with the air kits for specific installation informa-
tion.If used, the outside airkitmustbe installed
beforethefireplaceisframedandenclosedinthe
finished wall.
Outsideairdrawnintothefireplacesuppliesair
to the fire for combustion. Only one combus-
tion air duct on the left side of the fireplace is
necessary if installed.
If additional length of duct is necessary, pur-
chase locally available U.L. Class 0 or Class 1
metallicducting.Theductmayextendupto50'
(15.24 m) in any direction.
Note:Wheninstallingtheairductvertically,DO
NOTterminatetheductcloserthan3'belowthe
chimney top.
There is one hand operated shut-off valve lo-
cated in the left side of the fireplace opening
behindthescreen.Toopen,pullthehandleout.
The combustion air damper should be fully
open when the fireplace is in use and fully
closedwhen the fireplaceisnotin operation to
prevent outside air from entering your home.

Outside combustion air ducting may be run
upwardsorverticallythroughframingandceil-
ing joists, with the hood installed through an
outsidewalland3'(1m)belowthetermination.
Ducting may also be run downward through
floor joists and under the home to a ventilated
crawlspace not considered part of the living
area of the home.
After installing the outside air kit, remove the
cover from the shut off lever in the left side of
the firebox opening.
Note: Do not terminate combustion air kit in
attic space under any circumstances.
Aftercompletingtheinstallationoftheoptional
combustion air vent system the actuator arm
must be put in service and tested to ensure
properoperationbeforecompletinganyenclo-
sure around the firebox. Failure to do so may
result in extensive and costly rework.
Operate the actuator through several cycles
includingtheclosedposition. Ensuringproper
operation and freedom of movement. Return
the actuator arm to the closed position.
Step 8. Installing Logs and Rockwool –The
logsare packaged within the firebox. The bag of
rockwool is in the lower control compartment.
Remove the rockwool from the packaging and
tearintodimesizepieces(seeHomeownersCare
and Operation Instructions). Do not use more
than is necessary.

When first lighting the appliance, it will take a
few minutes for the line to purge itself of air.
Oncepurgingiscomplete,thepilotandburner
will light and operate as indicated in the in-
struction manual.

Step 9. Checking the System –With gas line
installed run initial system checkout before

Subsequent lightings of the appliance will
not require such purging. Inspect the pilot
flame (remove logs, if necessary, handling
carefully).
MANUALLY-RESET BLOCKED FLUE SAFETY
SWITCH
This appliance is equipped with a manually-
reset blocked flue safety switch. Refer to
Figure 21 forits location. If during appliance
operation, the flame goes out (independently
oftheburneron/offwallswitch),itmaybedue
to the operation of this safety limit switch.
First allow the appliance to cool. Then reset
the safety switch by pushing the red reset
button.
This reset button is located on the back of the
limit switch, between the wire terminals ( see
Detail A of Figure 21
).
The appliance should then relight and remain
lit. If this does not occur, turn off the appli-
ance and call a qualified service technician.
