Se vice and upg ades
Do not attempt to service a product ourself unless instructed to do so b the Customer Support Center or
our documentation. Onl use a Service Provider who is approved to repair our particular product.
Note: Some computer parts can be upgraded or replaced b the customer. Upgrades t picall are referred
to as options. Replacement parts approved for customer installation are referred to as Customer
Replaceable Units, or CRUs. Lenovo provides documentation with instructions when it is appropriate for
customers to install options or replace CRUs. You must closel follow all instructions when installing or
replacing parts. The Off state of a power indicator does not necessaril mean that voltage levels inside a
product are zero. Before ou remove the covers from a product equipped with a power cord, alwa s ensure
that the power is turned off and that the product is unplugged from an power source. For more information
about CRUs, refer to Chapter 7 “Hardware removal and installation” on page 57. If ou have an questions or
concerns, contact the Customer Support Center.
Although there are no moving parts in our computer after the power cord has been disconnected, the
following warnings are required for our safet .
CAUTION:

seek medical ca e immediately.
CAUTION:
Avoid contact with hot components inside the compute . Du ing ope ation, some components
become hot enough to bu n the skin. Befo e you open the compute cove , tu n off the compute ,
disconnect powe , and wait app oximately 10 minutes fo the components to cool.
CAUTION:
Afte eplacing a CRU, einstall all p otective cove s, including the compute cove , befo e connecting
powe and ope ating the compute . This action is impo tant to help p event unexpected elect ical
shock and help ensu e the containment of an unexpected fi e that could happen unde ext emely a e
conditions.

When eplacing CRUs, be cautious of sha p edges o co ne s that might cause inju y. If you suffe an
inju y, seek medical ca e immediately.
Static elect icity p evention
Static electricit , although harmless to ou, can seriousl damage computer components and options.
Improper handling of static-sensitive parts can damage the part. When ou unpack an option or CRU, do not
open the static-protective package containing the part until the instructions direct ou to install it.
When ou handle options or CRUs, or perform an work inside the computer, take the following precautions
to avoid static-electricit damage:
• Limit our movement. Movement can cause static electricit to build up around ou.
• Alwa s handle components carefull . Handle adapters, memor modules, and other circuit boards b the
edges. Never touch exposed circuitr .
• Prevent others from touching components.
• When ou install a static-sensitive option or CRU, touch the static-protective package containing the part
to a metal expansion-slot cover or other unpainted metal surface on the computer for at least two
seconds. This reduces static electricit in the package and our bod .
• When possible, remove the static-sensitive part from the static-protective packaging and install the part
without setting it down. When this is not possible, place the static-protective packaging on a smooth, level
surface and place the part on it.
• Do not place the part on the computer cover or other metal surface.
Powe co ds and powe adapte s
Use onl the power cords and power adapters supplied b the product manufacturer. Do not use the ac
power cord for other devices.
The power cords shall be safet approved. For German , it shall be H05VV-F, 3G, 0.75 mm2, or better. For
other countries, the suitable t pes shall be used accordingl .
Never wrap a power cord around a power adapter or other object. Doing so can stress the cord in wa s that
can cause the cord to fra , crack, or crimp. This can present a safet hazard.
Alwa s route power cords so that the will not be walked on, tripped over, or pinched b objects.
Protect power cord and power adapters from liquids. For instance, do not leave our power cord or power
adapter near sinks, tubs, toilets, or on floors that are cleaned with liquid cleansers. Liquids can cause a short
circuit, particularl if the power cord or power adapter has been stressed b misuse. Liquids also can cause
gradual corrosion of power cord terminals and/or the connector terminals on a power adapter, which can
eventuall result in overheating.
Ensure that all power cord connectors are securel and completel plugged into receptacles.
Do not use an power adapter that shows corrosion at the ac input pins or shows signs of overheating (such
as deformed plastic) at the ac input or an where on the power adapter.
Do not use an power cords where the electrical contacts on either end show signs of corrosion or
overheating or where the power cord appears to have been damaged in an wa .

Extension co ds and elated devices
Ensure that extension cords, surge protectors, uninterruptible power supplies, and power strips that ou use
are rated to handle the electrical requirements of the product. Never overload these devices. If power strips
are used, the load should not exceed the power strip input rating. Consult an electrician for more information
if ou have questions about power loads, power requirements, and input ratings.
Plugs and outlets
If a receptacle (power outlet) that ou intend to use with our computer equipment appears to be damaged
or corroded, do not use the outlet until it is replaced b a qualified electrician.
Do not bend or modif the plug. If the plug is damaged, contact the manufacturer to obtain a replacement.
Do not share an electrical outlet with other home or commercial appliances that draw large amounts of
electricit . Otherwise, unstable voltage might damage our computer, data, or connected devices.
Some products are equipped with a three-pronged plug. This plug fits onl into a grounded electrical outlet.
This is a safet feature. Do not defeat this safet feature b tr ing to insert it into a non-grounded outlet. If
ou cannot insert the plug into the outlet, contact an electrician for an approved outlet adapter or to replace
the outlet with one that enables this safet feature. Never overload an electrical outlet. The overall s stem
load should not exceed 80 percent of the branch circuit rating. Consult an electrician for more information if
ou have questions about power loads and branch circuit ratings.
Be sure that the power outlet ou are using is properl wired, easil accessible, and located close to the
equipment. Do not full extend power cords in a wa that will stress the cords.
Be sure that the power outlet provides the correct voltage and current for the product ou are installing.
Carefull connect and disconnect the equipment from the electrical outlet.
Exte nal devices
Do not connect or disconnect an external device cables other than Universal Serial Bus (USB) cables while
the computer power is on; otherwise, ou might damage our computer. To avoid possible damage to
connected devices, wait at least five seconds after the computer is shut down to disconnect external
devices.
Heat and p oduct ventilation
Computers, power adapters, and man accessories can generate heat when turned on and when batteries
are charging. Alwa s follow these basic precautions:
• Do not leave our computer, power adapter, or accessories in contact with our lap or an part of our
bod for an extended period when the products are functioning or when the batter is charging. Your
computer, power adapter, and man accessories produce some heat during normal operation. Extended
contact with the bod could cause discomfort or, potentiall , a skin burn.

• Do not charge the batter or operate our computer, power adapter, or accessories near flammable
materials or in explosive environments.
• Ventilation slots, fans, and heat sinks are provided with the product for safet , comfort, and reliable
operation. These features might inadvertentl become blocked b placing the product on a bed, sofa,
carpet, or other flexible surface. Never block, cover, or disable these features.
Inspect our desktop computer for dust accumulation at least once ever three months. Before inspecting
our computer, turn off the power and unplug the computer's power cord from the electrical outlet; then
remove an dust from vents and perforations in the bezel. If ou notice external dust accumulation, then
examine and remove dust from the inside of the computer including heat sink inlet fins, power suppl vents,
and fans. Alwa s turn off and unplug the computer before opening the cover. If possible, avoid operating
our computer within two feet of high-traffic areas. If ou must operate our computer in or near a high-traffic
area, inspect and, if necessar , clean our computer more frequentl .
For our safet and to maintain optimum computer performance, alwa s follow these basic precautions with
our desktop computer:
• Keep the cover closed whenever the computer is plugged in.
• Regularl inspect the outside of the computer for dust accumulation.
• Remove dust from vents and an perforations in the bezel. More frequent cleanings might be required for
computers in dust or high-traffic areas.
• Do not restrict or block an ventilation openings.
• Do not store or operate our computer inside furniture, as this might increase the risk of overheating.
• Airflow temperatures into the computer should not exceed 35°C (95°F).
• Do not install air filtration devices. The ma interfere with proper cooling.
Compute placement notices
Inappropriate computer placement might cause harm to children.
• Place the computer on a sturd piece of low-rise furniture or furniture that has been anchored.
• Do not place the computer at the edge of the furniture.
• Keep the computer cables out of the reach of children.
• Some items, such as to s, might attract children. Keep such items awa from the computer.
Supervise children in rooms where the above safet instructions cannot be full implemented.
Ope ating envi onment
The optimal environment in which to use our computer is 10°C–35°C (50°F–95°F) with humidit ranging
between 35% and 80%. If our computer is stored or transported in temperatures less than 10°C (50°F),
allow the cold computer to rise slowl to an optimal operating temperature of 10°C–35°C (50°F–95°F) before
use. This process could take two hours in extreme conditions. Failure to allow our computer to rise to an
optimal operating temperature before use could result in irreparable damage to our computer.
If possible, place our computer in a well-ventilated and dr area without direct exposure to sunshine.
Keep electrical appliances such as an electric fan, radio, high-powered speakers, air conditioner, and
microwave oven awa from our computer because the strong magnetic fields generated b these
appliances can damage the monitor and data on the storage drive.

Do not place an beverages on top of or beside the computer or other connected devices. If liquid is spilled
on or in the computer or a connected device, a short circuit or other damage might occur.
Do not eat or smoke over our ke board. Particles that fall into our ke board can cause damage.
Lase compliance statement
CAUTION:
When lase p oducts (such as CD-ROMs, DVD d ives, fibe optic devices, o t ansmitte s) a e
installed, note the following:
• Do not emove the cove s. Removing the cove s of the lase p oduct could esult in exposu e to
haza dous lase adiation. The e a e no se viceable pa ts inside the device.
• Use of cont ols o adjustments o pe fo mance of p ocedu es othe than those specified he ein
might esult in haza dous adiation exposu e.

Some lase p oducts contain an embedded Class 3A o Class 3B lase diode. Note the following:

inst uments, and avoid di ect exposu e to the beam.

DO NOT disassemble components that have the above label attached. There are no serviceable parts inside
these components.
Your product is designed for safe use. However, hazardous voltage, current, and energ levels are present
inside an component that has this label attached. Disassembling of these components might cause fire or
might even result in death. If ou suspect a problem with one of these parts, contact a service technician.
Lithium coin-cell batte y notice

When replacing the lithium coin-cell batter , use onl the same t pe or equivalent t pe that is recommended
b the manufacturer. The batter contains lithium and can explode if not properl used, handled, or disposed
of. Swallowing the lithium coin-cell batter will cause chocking or severe internal burns in just two hours and
might even result in death.
Keep batteries awa from children. If the lithium coin-cell batter is swallowed or placed inside an part of
the bod , seek medical care immediatel .
Do not:
• Throw or immerse into water
• Heat to more than 100 °C (212°F).
• Repair or disassemble
• Leave in an extremel low air pressure environment
• Leave in an extremel high-temperature environment
• Crush, puncture, cut, or incinerate
Dispose of the batter as required b local ordinances or regulations.
The following statement applies to users in the state of California, U.S.A.
California Perchlorate Information:
Products containing manganese dioxide lithium coin-cell batteries ma contain perchlorate.

Using ea phones, headphones, o a headset
• If our computer has both a headphone connector and an audio line-out connector, alwa s use the
headphone connector for earphones, headphones, or a headset. However, the headphone connector
does not support the microphone of the headset.
• If our computer has both a headset connector and an audio line-out connector, alwa s use the headset
connector for earphones, headphones, or a headset.
CAUTION:
Excessive sound p essu e f om ea phones and headphones can cause hea ing loss. Adjustment of
the equalize to maximum inc eases the ea phone and headphone output voltage and the sound
p essu e level. The efo e, to p otect you hea ing, adjust the equalize to an app op iate level.
Excessive use of headphones or earphones for a long period of time at high volume can be dangerous if the
output of the headphone or earphone connectors do not compl with specifications of EN 50332-2. The
headphone output connector of our computer complies with EN 50332-2 Sub clause 7. This specification
limits the computer’s maximum wide band true RMS output voltage to 150 mV. To help protect against
hearing loss, ensure that the headphones or earphones ou use also compl with EN 50332-2 (Clause 7
Limits) or a wide band characteristic voltage of 75 mV. Using headphones that do not compl with EN 50332-
2 can be dangerous due to excessive sound pressure levels.
If our Lenovo computer came with headphones or earphones in the package, as a set, the combination of
the headphones or earphones and the computer alread complies with the specifications of EN 50332-1. If
different headphones or earphones are used, ensure that the compl with EN 50332-1 (Clause 6.5
Limitation Values). Using headphones that do not compl with EN 50332-1 can be dangerous due to
excessive sound pressure levels.

Cleaning and maintenance
Keep our computer and workspace clean. Shut down the computer and then disconnect the power cord
before cleaning the computer. Do not spra an liquid detergent directl on the computer or use an
detergent containing flammable material to clean the computer. Spra the detergent on a soft cloth and then
wipe the computer surfaces.

Used to connect a USB-compatible device, such as a USB ke board, mouse, storage drive, or printer.

This indicator shows the status of the internal storage drives (such as hard disk drives or solid-state drives).

On: The storage drives are active and data is being transferred.
Off (when computer powered on): No data is being transferred or the storage drives are not in use.
4 Powe indicato
When the power indicator is on, the computer is turned on.
5 Powe button
Press the power button to turn on our computer. If our computer is unresponsive, ou can turn off the
computer b pressing and holding the power button for four or more seconds.
6 Mic ophone connecto
Use this connector to attach a microphone to our computer when ou want to record sound or if ou use
speech-recognition software.
7 Headset connecto
Use this connector to attach a headset to our computer.
8 Ca d eade (available on some models)
This is a 9-in-1 card reader. Used to insert a supported card-shaped storage medium to read the data on the
medium.
Rea view
Some connectors on the rear of our computer are color-coded to help ou determine where to connect the
cables on our computer.

Internal storage drives are devices that our computer uses to read and store data. You can add drives to
our computer to increase storage capacit and enable our computer to read other t pes of media. Internal
drives are installed in ba s.
When ou install or replace an internal storage drive, note the t pe and size of the drive that each ba
supports and correctl connect the required cables. Refer to the appropriate section in Chapter 7 “Hardware
removal and installation” on page 57 for instructions on how to install or replace internal storagedrives for
