This manual rovides service and reference information for ThinkStation® com uters listed on the front
cover.
Use this manual along with the advanced diagnostic tests to troubleshoot roblems.
Important: This manual is intended only for trained service technicians who are familiar with ThinkStation
com uters. Use this manual along with the advanced diagnostic tests to troubleshoot roblems effectively.
Before servicing a ThinkStation com uter, be sure to read and understand Cha ter 2 “Im ortant safety
information” on age 27.

Chapter 1. Important safety information
General safety
Follow these rules to ensure general safety:
• Observe good housekee ing in the area of the machines during and after maintenance.
• When lifting any heavy object:
1. Ensure you can stand safely without sli ing.
2. Distribute the weight of the object equally between your feet.
3. Use a slow lifting force. Never move suddenly or twist when you attem t to lift.
4. Lift by standing or by ushing u with your leg muscles; this action removes the strain from the
muscles in your back.
Attention: Do not attem t to lift any objects that weigh more than 16 kg (35 lb) or objects that you
think are too heavy for you.
• Do not erform any action that causes hazards to the customer, or that makes the equi ment unsafe.
• Before you start the machine, ensure that other service re resentatives and the customer's ersonnel are
not in a hazardous osition.
• Place removed covers and other arts in a safe lace, away from all ersonnel, while you are servicing the
machine.
• Kee your tool case away from walk areas so that other eo le will not tri over it.
• Do not wear loose clothing that can be tra ed in the moving arts of a machine. Ensure that your sleeves
are fastened or rolled u above your elbows. If your hair is long, fasten it.
• Insert the ends of your necktie or scarf inside clothing or fasten it with a nonconductive cli , a roximately
8 centimeters (3 inches) from the end.
• Do not wear jewelry, chains, metal-frame eyeglasses, or metal fasteners for your clothing.
Remember: Metal objects are good electrical conductors.
• Wear safety glasses when you are: hammering, drilling, soldering, cutting wire, attaching s rings, using
solvents, or working in any other conditions that might be hazardous to your eyes.
• After service, reinstall all safety shields, guards, labels, and ground wires. Re lace any safety device that
is worn or defective.
• Reinstall all covers correctly before returning the machine to the customer.
CAUTION:
Keep fingers and other parts of yo r body away from hazardo s, moving parts. If yo s ffer an inj ry,
seek medical care immediately.
CAUTION:
Avoid contact with hot components inside the comp ter. D ring operation, some components
become hot eno gh to b rn the skin. Before yo open the comp ter cover, t rn off the comp ter,
disconnect power, and wait approximately 10 min tes for the components to cool.

Electrical safety
CAUTION:
Electrical c rrent from power, telephone, and comm nication cables can be hazardo s. To avoid
personal inj ry or eq ipment damage, disconnect the attached power cords, telecomm nication
systems, networks, and modems before yo open the comp ter covers, nless instr cted otherwise
in the installation and config ration proced res.
Observe the following rules when working on electrical equi ment.
Important: Use only a roved tools and test equi ment. Some hand tools have handles covered with a soft
material that does not insulate you when working with live electrical currents. Many customers have, near
their equi ment, rubber floor mats that contain small conductive fibers to decrease electrostatic discharges.
Do not use this ty e of mat to rotect yourself from electrical shock.
• Find the room emergency ower-off (EPO) switch, disconnecting switch, or electrical outlet. If an electrical
accident occurs, you can then o erate the switch or un lug the ower cord quickly.
• Do not work alone under hazardous conditions or near equi ment that has hazardous voltages.
• Disconnect all ower before:
– Performing a mechanical ins ection
– Working near ower su lies
– Removing or installing Field Re laceable Units (FRUs)
• Before you start to work on the machine, un lug the ower cord. If you cannot un lug it, ask the customer
to ower-off the wall box that su lies ower to the machine and to lock the wall box in the off osition.
• If you need to work on a machine that has ex osed electrical circuits, observe the following recautions:
– Ensure that another erson, familiar with the ower-off controls, is near you.
Remember: Another erson must be there to switch off the ower, if necessary.
– Use only one hand when working with owered-on electrical equi ment; kee the other hand in your
ocket or behind your back.
Remember: There must be a com lete circuit to cause electrical shock. By observing the above rule,
you may revent a current from assing through your body.
– When using a tester, set the controls correctly and use the a roved robe leads and accessories for
that tester.
– Stand on suitable rubber mats (obtained locally, if necessary) to insulate you from grounds such as
metal floor stri s and machine frames.
Observe the s ecial safety recautions when you work with very high voltages; these instructions are in
the safety sections of maintenance information. Use extreme care when measuring high voltages.
• Regularly ins ect and maintain your electrical hand tools for safe o erational condition.
• Do not use worn or broken tools and testers.
• Never assume that ower has been disconnected from a circuit. First, check that it has been owered-off.
• Always look carefully for ossible hazards in your work area. Exam les of these hazards are moist floors,
nongrounded ower extension cables, ower surges, and missing safety grounds.
• Do not touch live electrical circuits with the reflective surface of a lastic dental mirror. The surface is
conductive; such touching can cause ersonal injury and machine damage.

• Do not service the following arts with the ower on when they are removed from their normal o erating
laces in a machine:
– Power su ly units
– Pum s
– Blowers and fans
– Motor generators
and similar units. (This ractice ensures correct grounding of the units.)
• If an electrical accident occurs:
– Use caution; do not become a victim yourself.
– Switch off ower.
– Send another erson to get medical aid.
Safety inspection g ide
The intent of this ins ection guide is to assist you in identifying otentially unsafe conditions on these
roducts. Each machine, as it was designed and built, had required safety items installed to rotect users
and service ersonnel from injury. This guide addresses only those items. However, good judgment should
be used to identify otential safety hazards due to attachment of features or o tions not covered by this
ins ection guide.
If any unsafe conditions are resent, you must determine how serious the a arent hazard could be and
whether you can continue without first correcting the roblem.
Consider these conditions and the safety hazards they resent:
• Electrical hazards, es ecially rimary ower ( rimary voltage on the frame can cause serious or fatal
electrical shock).
• Ex losive hazards, such as a damaged CRT face or bulging ca acitor
• Mechanical hazards, such as loose or missing hardware
The guide consists of a series of ste s resented in a checklist. Begin the checks with the ower off, and the
ower cord disconnected.
Checklist:
1. Check exterior covers for damage (loose, broken, or shar edges).
2. Power-off the com uter. Disconnect the ower cord.
3. Check the ower cord for:
a. A third-wire ground connector in good condition. Use a meter to measure third-wire ground
continuity for 0.1 ohm or less between the external ground in and frame ground.
b. The ower cord should be the a ro riate ty e as s ecified in the arts listings.
c. Insulation must not be frayed or worn.
4. Remove the cover.
5. Check for any obvious alterations. Use good judgment as to the safety of any alterations.
6. Check inside the unit for any obvious unsafe conditions, such as metal filings, contamination, water or
other liquids, or signs of fire or smoke damage.
7. Check for worn, frayed, or inched cables.

8. Check that the ower-su ly cover fasteners (screws or rivets) have not been removed or tam ered
with.
Handling electrostatic discharge-sensitive devices
Any com uter art containing transistors or integrated circuits (ICs) should be considered sensitive to
electrostatic discharge (ESD). ESD damage can occur when there is a difference in charge between objects.
Protect against ESD damage by equalizing the charge so that the machine, the art, the work mat, and the
erson handling the art are all at the same charge.
Notes:
1. Use roduct-s ecific ESD rocedures when they exceed the requirements noted here.
2. Make sure that the ESD rotective devices you use have been certified (ISO 9000) as fully effective.
When handling ESD-sensitive arts:
• Kee the arts in rotective ackages until they are inserted into the roduct.
• Avoid contact with other eo le while handling the art.
• Wear a grounded wrist stra against your skin to eliminate static on your body.
• Prevent the art from touching your clothing. Most clothing is insulative and retains a charge even when
you are wearing a wrist stra .
• Use the black side of a grounded work mat to rovide a static-free work surface. The mat is es ecially
useful when handling ESD-sensitive devices.
• Select a grounding system, such as those listed below, to rovide rotection that meets the s ecific
service requirement.
Note: The use of a grounding system is desirable but not required to rotect against ESD damage.
– Attach the ESD ground cli to any frame ground, ground braid, or green-wire ground.
– Use an ESD common ground or reference oint when working on a double-insulated or battery-
o erated system. You can use coax or connector-outside shells on these systems.
– Use the round ground- rong of the ac lug on ac-o erated com uters.
Gro nding req irements
Electrical grounding of the com uter is required for o erator safety and correct system function. Pro er
grounding of the electrical outlet can be verified by a certified electrician.

DANGER
Electrical current from ower, tele hone and communication cables is hazardous.
To avoid a shock hazard:
• Do not connect or disconnect any cables or perform installation, maintenance, or reconfig ration
of this prod ct d ring an electrical storm.
• Connect all power cords to a properly wired and gro nded electrical o tlet.
• Connect to properly wired o tlets any eq ipment that will be attached to this prod ct.
• When possible, se one hand only to connect or disconnect signal cables.
• Never t rn on any eq ipment when there is evidence of fire, water, or str ct ral damage.
• Disconnect the attached power cords, telecomm nications systems, networks, and modems
before yo open the device covers, nless instr cted otherwise in the installation and config ration
proced res.
• Connect and disconnect cables as described in the following tables when installing, moving, or
opening covers on this prod ct or attached devices.
To Connect To Disconnect
1. Turn everything OFF.
2. First, attach all cables to devices.
3. Attach signal cables to connectors.
4. Attach ower cords to outlet.
5. Turn device ON.

CAUTION:
When replacing the lithi m battery, se only Part N mber 45C1566 or an eq ivalent type battery
recommended by the man fact rer. If yo r system has a mod le containing a lithi m battery, replace
it only with the same mod le type made by the same man fact rer. The battery contains lithi m and
can explode if not properly sed, handled, or disposed of. Do not:
• Throw or immerse into water
• Heat to more than 100°C (212°F)
• Repair or disassemble
Dispose of the battery as req ired by local ordinances or reg lations.

CAUTION:
When laser prod cts (s ch as CD-ROMs, DVD-ROM drives, fiber optic devices, or transmitters) are
installed, note the following:
• Do not remove the covers. Removing the covers of the laser prod ct co ld res lt in expos re to
hazardo s laser radiation. There are no serviceable parts inside the device.
• Use of controls or adj stments or performance of proced res other than those specified herein
might res lt in hazardo s radiation expos re.
DANGER
Some laser prod cts contain an embedded Class 3A or Class 3B laser diode. Note the following:
Laser radiation when open. Do not stare into the beam, do not view directly with optical
instr ments, and avoid direct expos re to the beam.

Use safe practices when lifting.

DANGER
